| title | Demystifying Kyber |
| body | There are a number of decentralized exchanges(DEX) and protocols out in the market, ranging from EtherDelta to 0x’s Radar Relay. From the first glance, they all appear to share the same characteristic – removing a central authority. So that begs the question – What exactly is Kyber Network? What are their upcoming objective and goals? The team at Arête Vision speaks to Tsun Ngai Lee (TN), Head of Business Development in Kyber, to present these insights. **Kyber – Decentralised Exchange for Cryptocurrencies** The simple answer is – Kyber Network facilitates token conversion. As described by TN, it is the blockchain equivalent of Stripe but with a twist. Transactions on Kyber are cleared using smart contract without any intermediary and are done on the Ethereum network in a trustless manner. Currently, the tokens supported are limited to ERC20 tokens but the team has plans to expand beyond this restriction. **Reserve Managers – The Differentiating Factor** In every transaction, two main parties are involved – users and reserve managers. Kyber works by providing a platform where the user can only act as the buyer on every trade, similar to the real world concept of a money changer. This happens with the help of the smart contracts as it picks the best rates automatically from a pool of reserve managers for every buy order. With the help of smart contracts, Kyber operates without an orderbook and solely relies on reserve managers competing to provide the best quote to the users. This creates a natural competition between reserve managers and ensures that users get the best rate available. Kyber’s platform is similar to ShapeShift, a digital asset exchange, in many ways with the exception of having the system of reserve managers. The key difference is that Shapeshift acts as its own reserve manager by quoting a fixed price for every transaction. Whereas for Kyber, it takes an alternate approach to inject competition with the help of reserve pools. Figure 1: An Architecture Overview of Kyber Network https://blog.kyber.network/kyber-network-exchange-simulation-architecture-4e958be0ce13 **The Payment Enablers for Crypto Startups** Throughout the course of discussion, TN stresses that Kyber is laser focused in becoming the top choice for any crypto startups to process payments in different denominations. The pain point Kyber is solving is similar to what Paypal is built to solve in the early days of Ecommerce. The idea was conceived when the founders saw a boom in the number of cryptocurrencies – with each service providers launching and accepting payment in their own issued currencies. The opportunity came when the founders felt that by supporting a wider range of payment methods/cryptocurrencies, blockchain service providers can widen their user base and accelerate growth. **Partnerships – Creating a Win-Win Network** To make that happen, Kyber is putting a lot of hard work at forming partnerships. One of these immediate tasks on hand is to onboard tokens to be part of Kyber’s platform. In the last few months, Kyber has been aggressively seeking partnerships, as seen through recent announcements with Aptoide, Gifto and Request Network. In particular, Kyber’s partnership with Request Network creates tremendous value by supporting invoicing and down payment abilities that Request intends to offer. Request also provides Kyber the opportunity to act as a proxy to connect itself to fiat currency. On top of that, Kyber is also working with wallet providers to bring the benefit of convenience to the users. In view of the growing market with an average of at least 100 token launches every month, the Arête team were curious on how the partners are selected and if there is any particular trait these tokens should possess. When posted to TN, Kyber has no strict rules at the moment and welcomes all crypto service providers to come onboard. When asked whether they plan to partner existing coins, TN added that such partnerships are always desired. Arête also gathered from the interview that Kyber is attempting to establish their base in Asia, specifically, China and Korea. This strategy synergizes with Kyber’s language familiarity and support structure created during their token sale. Incidentally, China, Korea and Japan are also the largest cryptocurrency markets in Asia. **Challenges Ahead** In the near future, Kyber views scalability and communication as the main challenges to their business. While the utility of Kyber grows alongside the market cap of the Ethereum chain, it can be a double-edge sword as their success would then hinges on how well Ethereum can scale. With Ethereum’s current scalability issues, the number of transaction Kyber can handle might also be limited. We also understood that the recent partnerships have also created a strain for Kyber as it now needs to expand on operations capability to support the new influx of users. On a larger picture, the scalability issue is a systemic risk, which would eventually affect all service providers and tokens using the Ethereum chain. However, the free market mechanism of the Ethereum network should be able to balance itself as transaction fees would naturally increase when the network is bloated or overloaded. This could potentially lead to utility tokens being paid in larger amounts per transaction to keep fees to a minimum. In the long run, Kyber has a shot in alleviating chain bloat on Ethereum as it reduces the number of transactions required to swap tokens. On a more positive note, Vitalik Buterin, creator and head developer of Ethereum has announced several upgrades such as sharding lined up, to address Ethereum’s scalability issues. **Right Place, Right Time** The birth of Kyber cannot be timed any better. Riding on the current ICO boom and hype in cryptocurrency, the company’s growth could be lifted just like the expanding cryptocurrency market cap. It is not surprising if Kyber’s expansion is correlated to the market cap of utility tokens on the Ethereum chain as a whole. We also noted that Kyber has plans to partner with cross-chain platforms to offer coin/tokens swaps other than ERC20 tokens. This itself would unlock massive value to the Kyber network. From the recent token sale, Kyber has a cool 200k ETH sitting with them – serving as a good buffer to fund development needs. In the short to middle term, the public should expect to see more progress update on the partnerships and more importantly – product updates coming their way. **Conclusion** Even though Kyber faces an obvious bottleneck by building on top of Ethereum, it has tremendous upside with well defined product roadmap. Coupled with the proven ability to deliver (based on past product announcements) product updates and form partnerships, Kyber presents itself as a necessary infrastructural component in the cryptocurrency ecosystem. |
