      "body": "A great white shark left scientists \"buzzing\" after it grabbed a baited underwater research camera and dragged it to the surface — not once, but three times, according to researchers at Massey University in New Zealand.\n\nIt was likely more than the bait that attracted the hungry great white shark (Carcharodon carcharias). The camera's electrical signals may have also sparked the shark's interest, since sharks can detect electrical signals in the water, including the heartbeat of fish, said Andrew Nosal, an adjunct assistant professor of environmental and ocean sciences at the University of San Diego, who was not involved with the research.\n\n\"Although salt water is a decent conductor of electricity, these [electrical] signals can only be detected from close range,\" Nosal told Live Science. [Aahhhhh! 5 Scary Shark Myths Busted]\n\nThe researchers caught the stunning footage of the nearly 13-foot-long (4 meters) shark in the Kermadec Islands, also known as Rangitāhua, which are about 620 miles (1,000 kilometers) northeast of New Zealand.\n\nThe research team had just set up a baited remote underwater video (BRUV), a contraption that has two video cameras and a canister of bait fastened to a steel frame. Scientists usually deploy BRUVs to the ocean floor for 60 to 90 minutes at a time as a way to attract and then record sea life that approaches.\n\n\"When the gear is on the seabed, we don’t have a live feed, so we have no idea what we’re going to see when we review the footage at the end of the day,\" Adam Smith, a lecturer of statistics at Massey University, said in a statement.\n\nIn the past, the team's cameras had mostly recorded grey and whitetip reef sharks, as well as tiger sharks, hammerheads and \"some very obnoxious octopus[es],\" Smith said.\n\n\"Getting the great white at the end of the trip was definitely a highlight,\" he said. \"It's likely that some great whites stop over while migrating between New Zealand and the tropics, like humpback whales do.\"\n\nThe footage showed the shark circling the bait for a few minutes before it approached the bait box and gave the box a few \"curiosity bites,\" Smith said. \"It then effortlessly picked up the entire BRUV set, swam with it up to the surface, and then dropped it back to the sea floor. It did this a total of three times, before losing interest and swimming off.\"\n\nIt's possible that \"the shark was really hungry, excited and maybe confused by the contraption, which it likely has never seen before,\" Nosal said.\n\n\"I had to chuckle at the shark grabbing the BRUV stand and swimming with it for quite a ways — it reminded me a giant squirrel trying to hide a rare nut!\" Christopher Lowe, a professor of marine biology at California State University, Long Beach, told Live Science in an email. \"Also, I was just kind of glad it wasn’t one of my BRUVs! I wonder how often BRUVs go missing because big sharks carry them off?\"\n\nTiger sharks are also known to grab onto BRUVs, said Lowe, who was not involved with the research.\n\nBut, despite the excitement generated by the great white shark sighting, the Massey researchers were discouraged by the low number of sharks they had recorded.\n\n\"We were happy to see large numbers of sharks on some submerged banks in the tropics, and New Zealand's Kermadec Islands, but there were surprisingly few in many other locations, probably due to overfishing,\" Smith said.\n\nThe researchers are still combing through the hours of footage they collected from the BRUV, which was part of a six-week expedition in the southwest Pacific that included waters around the French territory of New Caledonia, Fiji, Tonga, the Kermadecs and New Zealand.\n\nIn addition to providing census counts, the data will provide information about animal behavior and which species live in specific types of habitats, the researchers said.",

      "body": "In the wake of the allegations that movie producer Harvey Weinstein harassed and assaulted multiple women over several decades, the hashtag #metoo began trending. Survivors of harassment and assault posted about their experiences to demonstrate the scope of the problem.\n\nA smaller social media campaign, #howiwillchange, had men pledging to stand up against harassing behavior. But neither campaign really addressed the elephant in the room: Who are the harassers?\n\nPsychologists have an answer to that question: About 20 to 25 percent of men report sexually coercive behavior, ranging from forced sex to verbal manipulation like guilt-tripping a woman into having sex. And these men do tend to share certain traits, including a tendency to bully others and to believe myths like \"a short skirt means a woman is asking for it.\" [Understanding the 10 Most Destructive Human Behaviors]\n\n\"The personality profile of that kind of guy is somebody who believes in traditional gender roles,\" said Tiffany Russell, a doctoral student at the University of North Dakota who studies how childhood experiences and personality traits beget bad behavior in adulthood. \"So, they're the macho strong men, or they believe they are, and they're very rejecting of the idea they may be girly or feminine.\"\nDangerous misconceptions\n\nAmong the strongest indications that a man might sexually harass or even sexually assault someone, Russell said, is that man's belief in rape myths. These include false beliefs like that if a woman goes home with a man after a date, she's automatically willing to have sex with him, or that wearing certain clothes means \"asking for trouble.\" In a 2016 study published in the journal Personality and Individual Differences, Russell and her doctoral adviser Alan King found that acceptance of rape myths — such as the idea that a woman in a miniskirt wants sex — was directly linked to the probability of a man committing sexual assault.\n\nOther studies back up this linkage. A 2016 paper by researchers at Wayne State University  published in the journal Violence Against Women asked 183 men who self-reported sexually coercive behavior why they did what they did. More than half said they were justified in coercing or even raping a woman because she had gotten them aroused; 40 percent said the victim was partially responsible because she'd led them on. Justifications of sexually coercive behavior were linked to belief in rape myths, the researchers reported.\n\n\"They feel entitled to sexual access,\" Russell said of sexually coercive men. \"Especially combined with those gender role [beliefs], women are basically there for them to get what they need. And if a woman dares to, say, reject them, they tend to get pretty angry and that is when a lot of aggressive stuff will happen.\"\n\nPerhaps unsurprisingly, Russell has found that a tendency toward everyday sadism is also linked with sexual aggression. Everyday sadism is basically bullying, she said — these are the same people who pick on weaker kids on the playground or steal their lunch money. Vicarious sadism, meaning enjoying seeing other people getting hurt, was also linked to hostility toward women. One of the questions used to measure vicarious sadism is asking whether someone likes to watch NASCAR races just to see car crashes, she said. \n\n\"All that disinhibits the person to aggress against anybody, honestly, but especially in a sexual way it makes them want to dominate women,\" she said. \n\nWomen can also be perpetrators, with some surveys pegging the number of sexually violent females at around 10 percent nationally. In a study published this year in the journal Personality and Individual Differences, Russell found similar dynamics at play. Sadism and rape myth acceptance predicted coercive behavior in women, just as in men. They were also more likely to say their friends used objectifying language when talking about women.\n\nChildhood experiences may also play a role, Russell found in her 2016 study. Men who were perpetrators were more likely to report what is called \"anxious attachment\" to their mothers. Attachment theory is a line of thinking in psychology that holds that forming a secure, warm attachment to a parent or caregiver early in life is key to healthy psychological development. An anxious attachment is one in which a child may cling to the caregiver but react ambivalently if the caregiver returns after an absence, or in which the child may avoid the caregiver altogether. This usually happens in emotionally neglectful situations in which a child's attempts at affection are repeatedly rebuffed.\n\n\"It's not a warm, nurturing parental relationship, so this kind of teaches early that women are untrustworthy,\" Russell said.\n\nFortunately, Russell said, there are ways to prevent attitudes like this and to reverse them if they take hold.\n\n\"The way that you raise boys to not be like that is to teach them respect for powerful women,\" she said. \"Show them women in science, show them women accomplishing things, like board members. Talk to them pretty early about rape myths and how women don't ask to be abused.
