titleBad Week Gets Worse As Morning Rally Falters
bodyThe market’s Friday blues returned with a vengeance today, dashing morning hopes of back-to-back daily gains and leaving us with another severe weekly plunge. We’ve been getting a steady stream of shutdowns for days now, including the states of California, New York and now Illinois. At the same time, we’re seeing the expected increase in coronavirus cases here in the U.S. Nevertheless, the market was on its way to a second straight positive session this morning with the Dow jumping approximately 400 points. However, the weight of all these problems and the fear of holding through the weekend eventually spoiled the advance. And spoiled it in a big way. The Dow finished lower by 4.55% (or about 913 points) to 19,173.98. The S&P broke an amazing 8-session streak of 4% moves yesterday, but got right back to it today with a plunge of 4.34% to 2304.92. And the NASDAQ, which advanced more than 2% on Thursday, dropped 3.79% (or about 271 points) to 6879.52. The week’s totals were as grisly as you might think. The Dow fell more than 17% over these five days, while the S&P was off 15% and the NASDAQ declined more than 12.5%. The worst day was Monday when the Dow collapsed by nearly 3000 points. The government and the Fed have been making moves to try and limit the impact of the coronavirus, but it hasn’t worked yet for longer than a day here or there. We’ve also got another bill out of the Senate coming our way, which reportedly would include sending $1200 in cash to individuals and $2400 to couples. What we haven’t gotten yet is any sign that this sickness is weakening here in the U.S…. just the opposite actually. People would feel a lot better about barricading themselves at home if they could see it was working. And investors would be more comfortable in calming the markets if they could see the light at the end of the tunnel. We’ll get there sooner or later, but they’ll probably be a lot more volatility in the meantime. Today's Portfolio Highlights: Insider Trader: It says a lot when insiders buy their own companies’ stock in a crazy and unpredictable market like this. Though no one can predict the bottom, Tracey is “rolling the dice here” with a few names that have seen insider activity in recent weeks. The new buys are: • Aimmune Therapeutics (AIMT) – 4 insiders bought in last 2 weeks • Cloudera (CLDR) -- 1 insider bought • United Rentals (URI) – 2 directors bought last week The editor thinks these are names that will be least impacted by the coronavirus, though notes that all areas will feel the pain. AIMT is a small-cap pharma name with a treatment for peanut allergy, while CLDR is an enterprise software platform for industries like engineering, finance and manufacturing. URI is the largest equipment rental company in North America. Each name was added with 10% allocations. The portfolio also sold Service Master (SERV). Read the full write-up for more on all of these moves. Home Run Investor: Have you seen the runs at the grocery stores lately? Food and supplies are in demand as people become shut-ins for an indefinite period of time. Therefore, Brian thought that Marten Transport (MRTN) would be a good stock to buy right now. This Zacks Rank #2 (Buy) is a trucking company that specializes in consumer packaged goods that require temperature control. In other words, they transport food. Read the full write-up for more on this new buy. Value Investor: People may be giving up a good amount of their freedom to fight the coronavirus… but they can’t do without food. Archer Daniels Midland (ADM) is the “supermarket to the world”, and its just the kind of big-cap with long-term business that Tracey is willing to add during another Friday plunge. This Zacks Rank #2 (Buy) has all the classic fundamentals that the editor looks for, but not much growth. However, the portfolio is getting in at 4-year lows after dropping 31% year to date, so Tracey thinks this is a good name to “hide out in” and wait for the rebound. Get more specifics on this new buy in the complete commentary. Stocks Under $10: Remember before all this coronavirus stuff started, this portfolio was having a real fun time with Maxar Technology (MAXR). In fact, Brian sold it in late February for a profit of approximately 109%. Well, the recent turmoil has cut this space technology solutions company in half, so the editor would like to see if history can (eventually) repeat itself. Read his full write-up for more. titleSurveying This Year’s Stock Market Damage Through A Sector Lens
bodyIt’s been a brutal year to date for U.S. stocks, but the pain varies substantially from sector to sector, based on a set of exchange traded funds as of Thursday’s close (Mar. 19). Consumer staples, tech and health care are suffering the least among the main sectors that comprise the U.S. market. Energy, by comparison, is deep in the hole, posting the biggest loss by far in the sector space. Consumer Staples Select SPDR (NYSE:XLP) is the current leader by way of posting the smallest year-to-date loss: a relatively modest 14.4% decline. The softer setback is linked to the view that companies in this sector are selling products that are considered essential to day-to-day life and therefore are mostly immune to the coronavirus blowback that’s roiling the economy. Stocks in the consumer staples sector tend to be lower beta-risk shares, notes John Petrides at Tocqueville Asset Management. “They’re less volatile. They have higher yields. So, in an environment where global bond yields have really collapsed, people are looking for income,” he advises. “Those three trends are really holding this group higher.” Petrides also predicts that “if we do have a market rebound from here on out, I would assume this group would probably be a relative underperformer.” US Equity Sectors https://d1-invdn-com.akamaized.net/content/pice97af0a96703dfbbebe722d1e98b2c53.png US Equity Sectors Energy, by contrast, has been crushed so far in 2020. Energy Select Sector SPDR (XLE (NYSE:XLE)) is down 57.4% year to date—the biggest decline by far. The outlook for a deep and perhaps short recession is driving the negative sentiment for energy shares. The challenges that energy companies face in the near term starts with the collapse in crude oil’s price. West Texas Intermediate, the U.S. benchmark, has fallen from the low-$60 range in January to under $21 at one point this week. WTIC Daily Chart https://d1-invdn-com.akamaized.net/content/picd448c9aa4c98bf0d6a8f262c9396396a.png WTIC Daily Chart “A sustained drop in oil prices would cost the sector 50,000-75,000 jobs if employment returned to its low from a few years ago,” predicts Nathan Sheets, chief economist at PGIM Fixed Income. <center>[Original Post](https://www.investing.com/analysis/surveying-this-years-stock-market-damage-through-a-sector-lens-200517593)</center>

titleThese Reliable Monthly Dividend Payers Have Never Been Cheaper
bodyA trio of reliable monthly dividend payers has been swept up in the pandemic panic. They could be the dirt-cheap buys that have dividend investors kicking themselves this time next year for not “backing up the truck” and buying every monthly paying share in sight. These closed-end funds (CEFs) as a whole are far smaller than their mutual and exchange-traded brethren, and they’re about as sexy as a doorstop, so they go completely ignored by traditional financial media. But a couple dozen of these have exhibited some downright admirable performance while the rest of the market is tanking around them. Better still? CEFs are, as a general rule, income monsters, and thus they’re among my favorite contrarian income plays for retirement accounts. And most importantly, these three in particular are bargains. Most stocks have been blasted because their business prospects suddenly look worse. But these funds have suffered modest declines while their net asset value (NAV) has remained steady or even grown. As a result, each CEF is trading at least twice as cheap as its historical discount to NAV. Black Rock (NYSE:BLK) Core Bond (BHK) Distribution Rate: 6.6% Black Rock Core Bond (BHK) is exactly what it sounds like: a fund that can provide investors with their only source of fixed-income exposure, if they wished. This wide basket of 1,390 bonds covers the gamut, from Treasuries and other U.S. agency securities to corporate bonds and mortgage-backed securities. Importantly, at least 75% of BHK’s assets need to be used on investment-grade debt (at the time the fund purchased the bond), and that’s right where it sits at the moment. The largest slug of assets, 31.4%, are in the top-rated tier of debt (AAA). High-yield corporate junk is about 11% of the portfolio, so that has kept BHK mostly insulated from that implosion. Despite the relative stability of Black Rock Core Bond’s assets, panicky investors have lost their nerve of late and driven the CEF’s units far more than they deserved. The upshot for new investors? You can buy those assets for 88 cents on the dollar—a nearly 12% discount that’s almost double BHK’s five-year average discount to NAV of 7.6%. On top of that, you’re getting a 6%-plus yield via distributions that are delivered each and every month. Wall Street Scares Up a Bargain Opportunity BHK Price NAV Chart https://d1-invdn-com.akamaized.net/content/picd03f460d67ca3e7d61e4a6ac22140cc7.png BHK Price NAV Chart Eaton (NYSE:ETN) Vance Municipal Income Trust (EVN) Distribution Rate: 5.5% Municipal bonds have held up awfully well so far, and in fact, many of the best-performing CEFs this year are of the muni-bond sort. Eaton Vance Municipal Income Trust (EVN) is among the funds in this tax-free crowd. Its 351 holdings are spread among 30 states, Puerto Rico and the District of Columbia, though they’re hardly spread out evenly. New Jersey, New York and Massachusetts munis alone make up nearly a third of assets, and more than three-quarters of all assets are held in the top nine states and Puerto Rico. Municipal bonds are a “sneaky” good income play most times. While the occasional default will send the financial world breathless, muni bonds are much safer than these cautionary tales would indicate, and 80% of EVN’s portfolio is at least investment-grade, including 42% in the second-highest debt tier of AA. EVN’s assets have been just a touch weaker than BHK’s, but the story here is the same: an overdone panic. As a result, Eaton Vance Municipal Income Trust trades at a mouth-watering 20% discount. That’s more than triple its five-year average discount of 4.3%. Bears Deliver a Treat to Muni Hunters EVN Price NAV Chart https://d1-invdn-com.akamaized.net/content/picb2ab8d3696afc5f1ecb791c9a14613ba.png EVN Price NAV Chart Black Rock Taxable Municipal Bond Trust (BBN) Distribution Rate: 6.5% Every now and again, I field the question: “Why would anyone buy a taxable municipal bond? What’s the point?” And I’ll answer with a question: “What’s the point of holding tax-free bonds in a tax-advantaged account?” Tax exemption only matters if you can put it to use. If you can’t, then you’re simply eating lower yields for no good reason. Taxable muni bonds, on the other hand, sport higher yields than traditional munis but with relatively similar credit strength. Black Rock Taxable Municipal Bond Trust (BBN) is a collection of just more than 150 of these “black sheep” munis, tied to things such as utilities, transportation projects and health measures. And more than 90% of the fund is allocated to investment-grade bonds, which is an awfully safe way to get over a 6% yield, paid monthly. And yet … What Is Wall Street Looking At? BBN Price NAV Chart https://d1-invdn-com.akamaized.net/content/pic0470c8b1a62ef52092f7d7390ec2a41f.png BBN Price NAV Chart The result is what, at least at the moment, looks like a steal—a discount of nearly 13% for a fund that typically only trades at 4% below NAV. That’s right: BBN’s net assets have actually gone up nearly 9% in value, but the fund’s price has dipped by more than 4%. How to Collect $3,000 in Dividends Each and Every Month The real question with these funds is just how much upside is left given that interest rates have been slashed into the ground. Their deep value prices will help provide modest price returns, but then what? I have even better income ideas outlined in my “Monthly Dividend Superstars” report. These little-known contrarian plays tick off every checkbox in the retirement wish list, including … * High annual yields nearing 8%. That translates into $3,125 in monthly income … on a nest egg of just $500,000. It’s all gravy from there if you’ve saved up even more. * Real upside potential of about 10% annually. That will keep your nest egg growing in retirement, protecting it against any sudden financial “shocks.” * Hidden value. There’s such a thing as “too popular.” If too many investors crowd into a stock, it becomes grossly overpriced, making more upside difficult to come by and increasing the risk of hyper-aggressive selling if investors get nervous. My “Dividend Superstars” are too small to be flush with institutional money, and far off the radar of many analysts, creating price inefficiencies that you and I can exploit. This is the path less traveled. Most finance-TV pundits will tell you to sink your hard-earned retirement money into “can’t-miss” blue chips like the Dividend Aristocrats. They’ve grown their dividends for decades, and probably will for decades more. Ignore that nonsense. Those same Dividend Aristocrats only yield a little more than 2% on average, and the most established Aristocrats have slowed their dividend growth to a sloth’s pace. Worse, some of these “Aristocrats” might be kicked out of the club by this time next year, their artificially propped-up payouts exposed by a lethal dose of reality. If you retire with these kinds of stocks, your income stream will dry up so quickly that, within just a few years, you’ll be forced to hack away at your savings to pay your monthly bills. Don’t take that gamble. Pay your monthly bills with outsize monthly dividend checks, and use the leftover cash to take a couple trips, build that backyard pool or spoil your grandkids rotten. Disclosure: Brett Owens and Michael Foster are contrarian income investors who look for undervalued stocks/funds across the U.S. markets. titleWith Markets Under Siege, It's Time To Consider Serious Portfolio Adjustment
bodyThis post was written exclusively for Investing.com With the stock market in an unprecedented period of volatility, we are all sometimes forced to make tough decisions. The recent turn of events around the potential impact of the coronavirus has unfolded with incredible speed, leaving many to wonder what could happen next, and no clear answer. While global markets are today rising along with energy companies getting a boost from U.S. President Donald Trump's suggestion he may intervene in the Saudi-Russian oil price war, the bigger picture remains murky and difficult to assess. Before yesterday's uptick, the S&P 500 had plummeted 30% in just four weeks and it's anyone guess what tomorrow may bring. The increased uncertainty, rising levels of volatility, and potential for a slow economic recovery have resulted in the shifting of assets in my portfolio, reducing my equity holdings, and raising cash. With my fear that the economic outlook could grow even worse and the potential for the stock market to fall further, it seemed to be the right thing to do. CBOE Volatility Index https://d1-invdn-com.akamaized.net/content/pic09af6d77c00ac307bfd0fed865525507.png CBOE Volatility Index Global Risks Global stock markets have so far failed to respond decisively to many of the actions that the central banks around the world have taken to try to calm nerves. Even with fiscal policy in many countries now on the table, the equity markets continue to fall. It indicates a few points of concern, with one being that the future is very uncertain or that the policies governments and central banks are taking may not be enough to solve the potential fallout. The lack of convinced response from the equity markets seems to present the most significant concern. Estimates May Be Too High Additionally, it seems possible that the current environment could severely impact companies' performances as governments try to slow the spread of the virus by closing borders, and in some cases shutting down. It could result in some companies seeing a whole quarter or two of reduced revenue and earnings, and that means that earnings estimates for the broader S&P 500 may be too high. U.S. 10-Year Treasurys Price Chart https://d1-invdn-com.akamaized.net/content/pic27da66f155a3c6e682ac88be1ca49d2d.png U.S. 10-Year Treasurys Price Chart If it does turn out that earnings are too high, then the value for the S&P 500 is not as cheap as it looks. Currently, S&P Dow Jones estimates earnings in 2020 of $169.94 and for $191.05 for 2021. It gives the S&P 500 a PE ratio of about 14.2 and 12.6, based on the indexes level of 2,409.40 on March 19. However, using a multiple that is closer to the historical average of roughly 16, the current level for the S&P 500 suggests earnings of approximately $151 per share in 2020, which would be a decline from 2019 earnings of $157.10. It seems possible given the severity of the steps taken to thwart the coronavirus, the impact to 2020 earnings could be more significant than a 4% decline from last year. S&P 500 https://d1-invdn-com.akamaized.net/content/pic3b84d1807232620e404c611fe770fb3c.png S&P 500 Companies May Re-Emerge Different Additionally, not all companies will emerge from this period, as brief or as long as it may be, the same as when they entered it. In some cases, it could mean a changed business model. Also, the market is likely to revalue specific sectors, meaning some stocks and sectors may not receive the same earnings or sales multiple they had before this event. It leaves investors uncertain of what lies ahead and, at this point, unsure of what the potential impact to one’s stocks may be. For me, it resulted in a painful process of having to give up on some companies that I have held for multiple years because I simply do not know how they will emerge from this environment, nor how long it will take for the business to recover. At this point, with equities influx, raising the cash portion of my holdings, while reducing some of the stocks that have more uncertain futures, seemed like the right thing to do. It does, in the end, create new opportunities down the road. Disclaimer: Mott Capital Management, LLC is a registered investment adviser. "title": "With Markets Under Siege, It's Time To Consider Serious Portfolio Adjustment",
"body": "This post was written exclusively for Investing.com\n\nWith the stock market in an unprecedented period of volatility, we are all sometimes forced to make tough decisions. The recent turn of events around the potential impact of the coronavirus has unfolded with incredible speed, leaving many to wonder what could happen next, and no clear answer.\n\nWhile global markets are today rising along with energy companies getting a boost from U.S. President Donald Trump's suggestion he may intervene in the Saudi-Russian oil price war, the bigger picture remains murky and difficult to assess. Before yesterday's uptick, the S&P 500 had plummeted 30% in just four weeks and it's anyone guess what tomorrow may bring.\n\nThe increased uncertainty, rising levels of volatility, and potential for a slow economic recovery have resulted in the shifting of assets in my portfolio, reducing my equity holdings, and raising cash. With my fear that the economic outlook could grow even worse and the potential for the stock market to fall further, it seemed to be the right thing to do.\n\nCBOE Volatility Index https://d1-invdn-com.akamaized.net/content/pic09af6d77c00ac307bfd0fed865525507.png CBOE Volatility Index\n\nGlobal Risks\n\nGlobal stock markets have so far failed to respond decisively to many of the actions that the central banks around the world have taken to try to calm nerves. Even with fiscal policy in many countries now on the table, the equity markets continue to fall. \n\nIt indicates a few points of concern, with one being that the future is very uncertain or that the policies governments and central banks are taking may not be enough to solve the potential fallout. The lack of convinced response from the equity markets seems to present the most significant concern.\n\nEstimates May Be Too High\n\nAdditionally, it seems possible that the current environment could severely impact companies' performances as governments try to slow the spread of the virus by closing borders, and in some cases shutting down. It could result in some companies seeing a whole quarter or two of reduced revenue and earnings, and that means that earnings estimates for the broader S&P 500 may be too high.\n\nU.S. 10-Year Treasurys Price Chart https://d1-invdn-com.akamaized.net/content/pic27da66f155a3c6e682ac88be1ca49d2d.png U.S. 10-Year Treasurys Price Chart\n\nIf it does turn out that earnings are too high, then the value for the S&P 500 is not as cheap as it looks. titleNASDAQ Climbs 2.3% As Stocks Swing Back From Rough Start
bodyWe seemed poised for another sharp selloff this morning, but the volatility worked in our favor today as stocks swung sharply higher and closed in positive territory. Tech had an especially good session Thursday that sent the NASDAQ upward by 2.3% (or about 160 points) to 7150.58. The FAANGs were mostly higher, especially those best suited for this temporary stay-at-home economy like Netflix (NASDAQ:NFLX, +5.25%) and Facebook (NASDAQ:FB, +4.2%). For the other indices, it was the most “normal” day we’ve seen in a while. (Normal in the old-fashioned way of a few weeks ago, that is.) For example, this session broke the S&P’s unbelievable streak of 8 consecutive days with moves of 4% or more in either direction. The index only rose by 0.47% to 2409.39. Meanwhile, the Dow fought back from a more than 700-point plunge this morning to finish higher by 0.95% (or around 188 points) to 20,087.19. The index is back above 20 K after closing below that mark yesterday for the first time since February 2017. It wasn’t much of a bounce back from Wednesday’s disheartening performance, which included the Dow plunging 6.3% (or more than 1300 points), the S&P slipping 5.2% and the NASDAQ off 4.7%. But we have to appreciate any positive move after the indices have slipped approximately 30% in such a short time period to end one of the most impressive bull markets in history. Plus, there were no circuit breakers today! We’ve seen a lot of action from the government this week as they attempt to soften the economic blow of this coronavirus. Late today, the Senate released a relief proposal that would send $1200 in cash to individuals and $2400 to couples. This comes a day after President Trump signed the first relief measure from Congress and amid plans for a hefty stimulus package. You know what else would help investors feel better heading into the weekend? If the market could manage a second straight positive session on Friday. Today's Portfolio Highlights: Commodity Innovators: Is it time to get long oil? Jeremy thinks this might be a good time for some long-term investing in the commodity, given recent headlines suggesting that the U.S. might intervene in the Saudi-Russia oil dispute. The editor added the following three names on Thursday: • United States Oil ETF (NYSE:USO) • Scorpio Tankers (STNG) • Phillips 66 (NYSE:PSX) The latter two names would rise with any crude oil relief. Read the full write-up for details on each of these new buys. TAZR Trader: While there’s likely more pain to come, the market’s test of SPX 2300 is setting up the possibility of a powerful relief rally. Kevin made a couple moves today to capture that move higher by adding Pro Shares Ultra Pro QQQ (TQQQ) and Pro Shares Ultra Pro S&P500 (UPRO). Read the full write-up for the particulars on the these moves, as well as updates on other positions and the editor’s ongoing analysis of this unprecedented selloff. Technology Innovators: You can’t keep an aggressive growth investor out of the game for long! Despite not knowing where the bottom is yet, Brian threw fear aside and added a few names that are showing life today. The new buys are: • Amazon (NASDAQ:AMZN) • Teladoc (TDOC) • Facebook (FB) • Tesla (NASDAQ:TSLA) The editor also sold Sapiens Int’l (SPNS) and Zendesk (ZEN) with the former name bringing a profit of 18.1%. titleStock Pick Update: Lamb Weston, Becton Dickinson, Public Service Enterprise
bodyThe coronavirus and economic slowdown fears are still dominating headlines. We released our last week’s Stock Pick Update just before another wave of the broad stock market’s sell-off. Then we have seen very volatile market conditions. Was it a bottoming pattern before a rebound or just consolidation before another decline? We will certainly see more volatility in the short-term. Let’s check which stocks could magnify S&P’s gains in case it rallies, and which stocks would be likely to decline the most if S&P plunges. Here are our stock picks for Wednesday, March 18 – Tuesday, March 24 period. The S&P 500 index has lost 10.49% since last Wednesday’s open. In the same period of time our five long and five short stock picks have lost 10.07%. They basically followed another huge wave of the broad stock market’ sell-off. Our short stock picks lost 2.42% and our long stock picks lost 17.71%. It leads to a conclusion that the recent volatility on the financial markets makes effective stock-picking very hard. However, the overall results remain relatively better than the S&P 500 index over last weeks. If stocks were in a more prolonged downward correction, being able to profit anyway, would be extremely valuable. Of course, it’s not the point of our Stock Pick Updates to forecast where the general stock market is likely to move, but rather to provide you with stocks that are likely to generate profits regardless of what the S&P does. This means that our overall stock-picking performance can be summarized on the chart below. The assumptions are: starting with $100k, no leverage used. The data before Dec 24, 2019 comes from our internal tests and data after that can be verified by individual Stock Pick Updates posted on our website.Stock Pick Update - Performance Chart https://d1-invdn-com.akamaized.net/content/picebd493d2bf85a59cab9d95073c77f340.png Stock Pick Update - Performance Chart Below we include statistics and the details of our three recent updates: * Mar 17, 2020 Long Picks (Mar 11 open - Mar 17 close % change): ADM (-1.26%), AES (-21.68%), SPG (-45.84%), PSX (-23.54%), BAC (+3.77%) Short Picks (Mar 11 open - Mar 17 close % change): COG (+14.72%), CME (-17.57%), NOC (-1.88%), CLX (+14.35%), WEC (+2.48%) Average long result: -17.71%, average short result: -2.42% Total profit (average): -10.07% * Mar 10, 2020 Long Picks (Mar 4 open - Mar 10 close % change): VNO (-8.94%), WBA (+4.26%), PFE (NYSE:PFE) (-1.45%), NBL (-40.68%), JPM (-14.92%) Short Picks (Mar 4 open - Mar 10 close % change): APA (-57.45%), PGR (-0.09%), ROK (-9.59%), EQIX (-2.51%), KR (+9.84%) Average long result: -12.34%, average short result: 11.96% Total profit (average): -0.19% * Mar 3, 2020 Long Picks (Feb 26 open - Mar 3 close % change): BKR (-11.98%), MMM (-2.89%), PFE (+0.18%), EXR (-0.96%), WEC (-2.91%) Short Picks (Feb 26 open - Mar 3 close % change): MAA (-4.20%), EIX (-9.01%), CLX (-0.02%), OKE (-7.87%), CMI (-6.54%) Average long result: -3.72%, average short result: +5.53% Total profit (average): +0.91% The broad stock market has reached historically high levels in February. The breathtaking correction in December of 2018 was followed by the record-breaking comeback rally. But the recent sell-off suggests that investors should prepare for more volatility. If the market reverses higher, which stocks are going to beat the index? And if it continues lower from here, which stocks are about to outperform on the short side? We will provide stock trading ideas based on our in-depth technical and fundamental analysis, but since the main point of this publication is to provide the top 5 long and top 5 short candidates (our opinion, not an investment advice) for this week, we will focus solely on the technicals. The latter are simply more useful in case of short-term trades. We will assume the following: the stocks will be bought or sold short on the opening of yesterday's trading session (March 18) and sold or bought back on the closing of the next Tuesday's trading session (March 24). First, we will take a look at the recent performance by sector. It may show us which sector is likely to perform best in the near future and which sector is likely to lag. Then, we will select our buy and sell stock picks. There are eleven stock market sectors: Energy, Materials, Industrials, Consumer Discretionary, Consumer Staples, Health Care, Financials, Technology, Communications Services, Utilities and Real Estate. They are further divided into industries, but we will just stick with these main sectors of the stock market. Based on the above, we decided to choose our stock picks for the next week. We will choose our top 3 long and top 3 short candidates using trend-following approach, and top 2 long and top 2 short candidates using contrarian approach: Trend-following approach: * buys: 1 x Consumer Staples, 1 x Health Care, 1 x Utilities * sells: 1 x Energy, 1 x Financials, 1 x Industrials Contrarian approach (betting against the recent trend): * buys: 1 x Energy, 1 x Financials * sells: 1 x Consumer Staples, 1 x Health Care Trend-following approach Top 3 Buy Candidates 1. Lamb Weston Holdings(NYSE:LW). - Consumer Staples Lamb Weston Holdings Daily Chart https://d1-invdn-com.akamaized.net/content/picdc0bceaba818033bfff5cafc4f1d6cfc.png Lamb Weston Holdings Daily Chart * Potential bottoming pattern * Technically oversold - short-term upward correction play * Resistance level of $60-70 (upside profit target level) 2. Becton Dickinson (NYSE:BDX) - Health Care Becton Dickinson and Co. Daily Chart https://d1-invdn-com.akamaized.net/content/picf378b343e0f6215699522f62287a57a8.png Becton Dickinson and Co. Daily Chart * Breakout above month-long downward trend line * Potential resistance level at $260-275 (upside profit target level) 3. Public Service Enterprise Group (NYSE:PEG) - Utilities PEG Public Service Enterprise Daily Chart https://d1-invdn-com.akamaized.net/content/pic28366a2d7ad5af0c7e8e55d3bf7bd5db.png PEG Public Service Enterprise Daily Chart * Potential upward reversal pattern - upward correction play * The resistance level of $50 * Positive divergence between the price and RSI indicator Summing up, the above trend-following long stock picks are just a part of our whole Stock Pick Update. The Consumer Staples, Health Care and Utilities sectors were relatively the strongest since February 18. And they have lost less than the S&P 500 index in the same period. So that part of our ten long and short stock picks is meant to outperform in the coming days if the broad stock market acts similarly as it did before. <center>[Original Post](https://www.investing.com/analysis/stock-pick-update-march-18--march-24-2020-200517211)</center>

titlePlaying The Whipsaws And The Stock Rebound Ahead Profitably
bodyBouncing off Tuesday's new 2020 intraday lows, the S&P 500 closed higher on the day. But what about yesterday's premarket action? The bulls didn’t add to their gains in the overnight trading. With the futures back below 2400, where next for the stock market? Let’s start with the weekly chart to see the shape of things this very moment (charts courtesy of http://stockcharts.com). SPX Weekly Chart https://d1-invdn-com.akamaized.net/content/pice6064c3b379623d3a3570b8d21d57b7d.png SPX Weekly Chart While the week is far from over, the price action smacks of a reversal in the making. Accounting for Tuesday’s session, the volume appears on track to beat last week’s one. Should weekly closing prices stick around this level, that would support the likelihood of a turnaround. But what kind of a turnaround? It’s our opinion that this would most likely mark a temporary respite only. Let’s move on to the daily chart. SPX Daily Chart https://d1-invdn-com.akamaized.net/content/pic3ecd3781e2b21b4752a35861e941edac.png SPX Daily Chart Similarly to Friday, stocks rebounded yesterday. While that appears encouraging, let’s examine whether our Tuesday’s notesremain up-to-date also yesterday, > (…) The daily indicators maintain their very extended posture. While that’s no guarantee of a stock rebound, another relief rally might be due in short order. The potential for a rebound is stronger tomorrow than has been today, and it’s not just because of the potential next Fed move later today that might spur buying. It’s the daily indicators – they’re refusing to budge much lower with each daily slide (that speaks to prices being overextended to the downside), and Stochastics has even flashed its buy signal. While the signal came in its oversold area and thus is not as reliable as the one generated outside this range, it’s still notable. That’s because should prices remain roughly unchanged today, or even move higher, Stochastics is likely to wave goodbye to its oversold area, lending more credibility to its buy signal. And that would increase the likelihood of more traders jumping in on the unfolding upswing. Therefore, the current price point offers an opportune entry point from the risk-reward perspective – just like our Tuesday’s profitable long trade did. Time for some more profits! Summing up, while thebears have the upper hand, the potential for an upswing is growing day by day. And we plan to cash in on that just like we did yesterday. This is primarily supported by the daily indicators’ posture. <center>[Original Post](https://www.investing.com/analysis/playing-the-whipsaws-and-the-stock-rebound-ahead-profitably-200517210)</center>

titleMorrison Supermarkets Soars 11%, More To Come?
bodyThe FTSE may be down over 4% but Morrisons has soared 11% across the morning session, thanks to business rates holiday, consumers stockpiling and the recession proof nature of supermarkets. Morrison Supermarkets (LON:MRW)’s was the first of the big four supermarkets to release full year results: * Like for like sales excluding fuel -0.8% * Full year revenue -1.1% £17.5 billion * Underlying pre-tax profit +3% to£408 million Last year already seems like an eternity ago! Like for like sales declined across the previous year owing to political uncertainty, strong comparisons from the previous year and increased sales. However, investors have been quick to shrug off last year’s concerns, focusing instead on the Covid-19 impact. Morrisons confirmed like for like sales in the first 6 weeks of this year jumped 5%. The coronavirus fear factor became really noticeable a few weeks later. Judging by the empty shelves in the supermarkets like for like sales have continued to soar, and not just at Morrisons, but at supermarkets across the board. RECESSION PROOF STOCK The UK is heading for a recession. With stricter social distancing, isolation and quarantine measures coming into play consumption has dropped sharply and thousands of jobs will be lost. A recession is inevitable. The Government and Bo E are doing what they can to prevent the oncoming recession becoming a depression. Supermarkets across the board will benefit from the business rates holiday. With a recession coming and the FTSE in free fall now is the time to buy stocks that we simply can’t live without. These are recession proof stocks; defensive stocks outperform the broader market in a time of economic downturn. Supermarkets and consumer staples fall into this category. The demand of most of a supermarket’s products will remain constant even in a recession because they are necessities rather than luxuries. Morrisons have announced it is creating 3500 jobs to cope with the increased demand, almost all of which is online. The risk will be if supply chains start to experience large disruptions and stock doesn’t arrive to the shops. Whilst we are still a long way from this position it is worth keeping in mind given the rapidly changing nature of the coronavirus impact. LEVELS TO WATCH Morrisons has surged back above its 50,100 and 200 sma on a bullish(4 hr) chart. At 200p it is trading around where it was at the start of the year, recouping all losses year to date. Immediate resistance csn be seen at 203p, (today’s high) perior to 210p (Sept’19 high). Support exists at 186p (200 sma) prior to 180.4p (today’s low) and 179p (100 sma) Morrisons - 240 Min Chart https://d1-invdn-com.akamaized.net/content/pic9c158e63c0a8f1813fe71f1574206f6a.png Morrisons - 240 Min Chart <center>[Original Post](https://www.investing.com/analysis/morrisons-soars-11-more-to-come-200517208)</center>

Supermarkets across the board will benefit from the business rates holiday.\n\nWith a recession coming and the FTSE in free fall now is the time to buy stocks that we simply can’t live without. These are recession proof stocks; defensive stocks outperform the broader market in a time of economic downturn. Supermarkets and consumer staples fall into this category. The demand of most of a supermarket’s products will remain constant even in a recession because they are necessities rather than luxuries.\n\n\nMorrisons have announced it is creating 3500 jobs to cope with the increased demand, almost all of which is online.\n\nThe risk will be if supply chains start to experience large disruptions and stock doesn’t arrive to the shops. Whilst we are still a long way from this position it is worth keeping in mind given the rapidly changing nature of the coronavirus impact.\n\nLEVELS TO WATCH\nMorrisons has surged back above its 50,100 and 200 sma on a bullish(4 hr) chart. At 200p it is trading around where it was at the start of the year, recouping all losses year to date.\n\nImmediate resistance csn be seen at 203p, (today’s high) perior to 210p (Sept’19 high).\n\nSupport exists at 186p (200 sma) prior to 180.4p (today’s low) and 179p (100 sma)\n\nMorrisons - 240 Min Chart https://d1-invdn-com.akamaized.net/content/pic9c158e63c0a8f1813fe71f1574206f6a.png Morrisons - 240 Min Chart \n <center>[Original Post](https://www.investing.com/analysis/morrisons-soars-11-more-to-come-200517208)</center>",

title5 Stock Charts To Watch: AHPI, CODX, GILD, MRNA, RAD
body1. Allied Healthcare Products, Inc. (NASDAQ:AHPI) was awesome on Wednesday, jumping 5.80, or 41 1/2%, to 19.75, after reaching a high of 20.00, on 2 million shares traded, and then it was up another 2.25, or 11.39%, in after-hours. I like the way this was set up. It has a falling wedge for wave one, a run-up, a thrust, wave four is a consolidation, and then a pop on Wednesday, sending it to resistance territory. I think 24-24 1/4 will be Thursday’s target. If it gets through that, we’re looking at much higher levels. Keep and eye on this one. 2. Co-Diagnostics, Inc. (NASDAQ:CODX) is near the apex much like AHPI. It was up just two cents during the session on Wednesday to 10.70, but it reached a high of 12.24, on 8.7 million shares traded, and then gained 40 cents, or 3.74%, in after-hours. If it explodes again, we may see this stock at 35 and 38. 3. Gilead Sciences, Inc. (NASDAQ:GILD) popped another 4.90, or 6 1/2% on Wednesday, to 79.42, after reaching a high of 79.98 on 32 million shares traded, and then another 2.08, or 2.62%, in after-hours. It has now had a two-day pop from the retest of the 68 level. I think it’s going to see 85-86 on Thursday. 4. Moderna, Inc. (NASDAQ:MRNA) has now had a nice, two-day pop, on Wednesday running up another 3.40, or 12%, to 31.58, after reaching a morning high of 32.54, on 28.3 million shares traded, and then another 14 cents to 31.72 in after-hours. If it gets through 32.54, it can retest the high at 36, and then it’s off to the races. 5 Rite Aid Corporation (NYSE:RAD) jumped 1.49, or 8.79%, to 18.44, with a high of 19.18, on 15 million shares traded on Wednesday. It has gone from 9.24 to 19.18. That’s ten points in four days. It may be a little bit overbought and at resistance at the gap, and with a 3-day follow-through, it may very well test the high near 23, and pull back to support at the 14-14 1/2 range. Stocks on the long side included Applied DNA Sciences, Inc. (APDN), Allied Healthcare Products, Inc. (AHPI), Blue Apron Holdings, Inc. (APRN), Biomerica, Inc. (BMRA), Bio NTech (BNTX), Co-Diagnostics, Inc. (CODX), Velocity Shares 3x Inverse Crude S&P GSCI Crude Oil Index (DWT), Gilead Sciences, Inc. (GILD), Moderna, Inc. (MRNA), Novavax, Inc. (NVAX), Rite Aid Corporation (RAD), Pro Shares Ultra Short Bloomberg Crude Oil (SCO), Teladoc Health, Inc. (TDOC), Direxion Daily Small Cap Bear 3 X Shares (TZA), and United Natural Foods, Inc. bodyDow analysis and strategy: There are two key observations that I may make based on this section’s two graphs, the 6-month Dow chart and the 30-year VIX: Firstly, a confirmed stochastic buy signal would be triggered by a cross over the 20-level, which would likely be caused by a positive close on Thursday (the slow stochastic appears beneath the Dow’s price chart). Here, I am simply reporting facts as opposed to forecasting. Secondly, for those familiar with Elliott, wave-4 resistance is ~21,000. Based on this, different strategic possibilities exist according to one’s situation. These pages have been devoted to market timing and advising on the management of the related put option combination program, engineered to provide income and protection against significant declines. After several reports (dating back to August 2019) which advised owning this combination, the March 11 report went into greater detail regarding the engineering of such a strategy. The report also explained that my own selected VIX level for reentry into the strategy after the closing of a profitable trade is 27.5. Therefore, since the VIX is nowhere near any break below 30, and since I believe that the Dow is not going to bottom until it is somewhat closer to the 15,500 zone (longer term chart will be included next time), an already-closed second position of the year would not be reestablished to create a third, if it has indeed already been closed. It is understandable that one would have wished to protect dramatic profits, given abounding losses for most investors and the wish to offset other portfolio losses with any dramatic triple-digit gains stemming from the combination’s hedge. There is the issue of the exact engineering of the put combination at which one would have arrived, which includes the rule for the downside trigger (rules-based liquidation). Also, much of whether or not one would have closed a second extremely profitable trade of the year would depend on one’s management of the engineered program. The downside trigger would have been hit according to any reasonably structured put combination program (including mine), but experience would have suggested to some that a mushrooming VIX is a rare opportunity to balloon one’s profits. There are multiple ways of doing this, of course. Personally, I view simple liquidation as doing the market a favour, but these pages cannot refer to unseen actions to determine an exact level of success, whether it is of the income and protection hedging program, or anything else, for that matter. For instance, if one’s trigger had been hit, but one wished to take advantage of a VIX chart that had/has completely broken out, one could (have) always sold nearer term at-the-money puts to run-up the score. In such a situation one wins either way, and this kind of active management (which also hedges gains-to-date) is actually quite obvious under such circumstances. Such situations are like being on a trader’s beach when it is all easy. In any event, if one is sitting on sizeable gains in 2020 without an existent position and wishes to reenter the short side as a trader using profits, one could do so with something like a bearish reverse diagonal call spread; this attempts to sidestep the negative effects of an extreme VIX level. An example would be buying the June 30 SPDR® Dow Jones Industrial Average ETF Trust (NYSE:DIA) or DJX at-the-money calls, while selling the April 17 175 calls. This opens up multiple money-making opportunities resulting from the respective time premiums and the multiple expiry dates that one can short after the April 17 expiry, whether that option expires worthless or not. Beware of factors to be considered when comparing European versus U.S.-style contracts. Except for silver, I will not follow-up on short term trading ideas, because my sole interest in the indices has been, and is, the income and protection put combination strategy, which is designed to provide positive returns after a bullish quarter, as well as dramatic triple-digit profits after a bear market-style quarterly decline of 8–10%. Of course, I remain devoted to commentary regarding the best management of such a position within the context of real-time market forecasts. Regarding the latter or the contemplated bearish reverse diagonal call spread, a near-term shorting point is about 1,000 points above yesterday’s market close. DIA Daily Chart https://d1-invdn-com.akamaized.net/content/pic39102fdfe42aa0e7bb4bbea96c5a4a93.png DIA Daily Chart The VIX chart below shows that it is in spitting distance of its all-time high at 90 at the end of 2008. Also note that the market only bottomed 3 months later as put premiums are predictive (lead the market). VIX Weekly Chart https://d1-invdn-com.akamaized.net/content/pic90c1f3e0544b980ed024cb37bd75a431.png VIX Weekly Chart Silver and Gold analysis and strategy: March 11, 2020 pre-opening report: > “I explained the counterintuitive form of such analytic interpretation so that one not be shaken out of long term gold positions by sharp declines, such as the $40-60 smash that I expect in the near term; most of that smash could even occur tomorrow (Wednesday March 11).” Based on the 6-month SPDR® Gold Shares Fund (NYSE:GLD) chart immediately below, the stochastic is oversold and turning up, as the March 11 wrote should occur by Wednesday. Gold HAS CORRECTED WITHIN AN UPTREND, has fallen to major support (which is more optically pronounced on charts of longer duration than the one below), and has very quickly snapped back above its 200-day moving average. MASSIVE support exists at ~137 so one should go long but, based on this section’s first paragraph, one should already be invested at 148. GLD Daily Chart https://d1-invdn-com.akamaized.net/content/pic26b80ecc660f458aae2797cc94e2ab82.png GLD Daily Chart A 10,000-point collapse in the Dow in 2020? Check. Gold correcting within up-trends? To the trained eye, check. Silver up $10.00 from bottom-to-top? It’s much more likely to occur if counting from recent lows, mathematically-speaking but, as we know, the December and January reports meant from 2019’s low, just as I had been referring to the Dow’s 2019 peak. In this market, yes, silver could be off 2019’s low by $10! Would a ~130% blast-off through to yearend really be more unusual than what we’ve already seen in 2020? The 6-month i Shares Silver Trust (NYSE:SLV) chart follows below. Here are a few observations based on this chart, and resulting as well from the 2nd and 3rd charts below, the VXSLV (SLV option time premium index), which dates back to the April of 2011 peak, and the 100-year gold:silver ratio. All taken together, one can see that the SLV could rally to $13.5 and it wouldn’t even mean anything. While those charts are not shown here, note how the Van Eck Vectors Gold Miners ETF (NYSE:GDX) and Van Eck Vectors Junior Gold Miners ETF (NYSE:GDXJ) (the miners’ indices) fell 50% within weeks, before rallying 60 and 70%, respectively, from this week’s lows (and during a collapsing stock market)! Madness. SLV Daily Chart https://d1-invdn-com.akamaized.net/content/pic365afd5f03d1359fc9200f22240f1d7f.png SLV Daily Chart The VXSLV has FLOWN ABOVE ITS 2011 PEAK, when the SLV almost hit $50. That year, gold crossed $1,900, thereby breaking its $800+ peak in 1980. In 1980 and 2011, silver hit up around, but no higher than $50. As well, in 2008, gold bottomed at $681 while silver bottomed at $8.40. This is yet another way of gaining some perspective regarding the magnitude of how high the crowd can drive silver prices from here. 130%? Though on a slightly different point, these metals were somewhat higher by the time that stocks bottomed in March 2009, almost 6 months after the PM lows. Keep in mind the comments that appear so far in this section, in the context of the gold:silver 100-year ratio chart which has made a new all-time high around 120. Graph https://d1-invdn-com.akamaized.net/content/pic4181baa5b9e45d59101ad28f68091da1.png Graph VXSLV Chart https://d1-invdn-com.akamaized.net/content/pic10f10da6bb28f9a0e9c46c4585a84a50.png VXSLV Chart Before concluding with a trading strategy, the closing note relates to this report’s 2nd-to-last chart (VXSLV). Given its own breakout to new all-time highs, coupled with the ratio chart, the upside is outrageous. On Tuesday, though the SLV was slightly lower, both puts and calls were higher. In 38 years, I have never seen that before. Though I was confident of a low in silver a few dollars higher than here, I do strongly suspect that we have finally seen the bottom and that there will be no divergence over the coming weeks (no new lows). It would be unusual, though not as ridiculous as what we have been seeing, to take-off without a divergent buy signal, but, as this report writes, everything is weird today. Imagine that a call spread I recently purchased is actually up a few pennies, despite a multi-dollar decline. To say that volatility premiums have supported call prices despite a bashing in the metal is an understatement. If one were so inclined, one could consider purchasing a September 30/June 30 $15 call spread. The closing bid-ask was 36-47 cents, with a mid-point of $0.415. Without considering anything other than the above, one may contemplate a market-opening bid of 44 cents. If the June cycle causes the short put to expire, one would possess a great deal of leverage. Otherwise, one may view the cost base (44 cents) as relatively easy to recover (see above regarding the PMs’ respective lows in 2008). Remember, a time spread such as this greatly mitigates the negative effects of going long at extremely high VXSLV levels, particularly given the reasonableness of the strike price. <center>[Original Post](https://www.investing.com/analysis/now-what-200517199)</center>

titleDow Closes Below 20K As Selloff Resumes
bodyThe market had no follow-through on yesterday’s stimulus-induced rally, as stocks plunged again on Wednesday with the Dow closing below 20 K for the first time in more than two years. However, the loss narrowed significantly late in the session on a rally sparked by passage of the first relief measure from Congress. It was still another sharp decline and all the more disheartening coming after Tuesday’s energetic advance, which had some folks hoping that a bottom was near. The Dow plunged 6.3% (or about 1338 points) to 19898.92 for its first close beneath 20 K since early 2017. The index had a nice recovery from dropping by about 2300 points earlier in the day. The S&P dipped 5.18% to 2398.10 and the NASDAQ slipped 4.70% to 6989.84. The S&P had been down more than 7% at its worst, which means we tripped a “circuit breaker” for the fourth time in recent days. The late rally was probably a reaction to the Senate approving the House’s coronavirus bill, which expands paid leave and unemployment benefits. It also includes free testing for the virus. Meanwhile, the sickness continues to spread and the country continues to close things down, including the US/Canada border and the NYSE trading floor. (The exchange will temporarily move to fully electronic trading.) Even though this wasn’t the steepest loss we’ve seen in recent days, it feels just as deflating coming after yesterday’s surge. You can actually see the disappointment in the scorecard above, as the editors dumped a lot of names today. Help is on the way from the government, but there’s not much improvement on the health side… yet. At some point, we’ll beat the coronavirus, but it looks like we’re going to have to keep our distance to do it and put up with this volatility in the meantime. Today's Portfolio Highlights: Commodity Innovators: Buying commodities today? Yep, that’s what Jeremy is doing. Supply concerns in some areas could lead to a spike in price, so the editor picked up the following positions to take advantage: • Teucrium Sugar ETF (CANE) • IPath Bloomberg Cocoa Subindex Total Return ETN (NIB) • Van Eck Vectors Agribusiness ETF (MOO) He also sold Velocity Shares 3 X Long Natural Gas ETN (UGAZ) and Aberdeen Standard Physical Platinum Shares ETF (PPLT). Read the full commentary for specifics on all of today’s buys and more. Short List: This portfolio continues to do its job. With the market plunging again on Wednesday, the service had ALL of the top performers. Those gains included Wynn Resorts (NASDAQ:WYNN, +20.9%), Tesla (NASDAQ:TSLA, +16%), The Trade Desk (TTD, +15.1%), Agnico Eagle Mines (AEM, +12.5%) and IAC/Inter Active Corp (IAC, +11%). Remember, this is an emotion-free portfolio that takes advantage of falling and volatile markets. "title": "Dow Closes Below 20K As Selloff Resumes ",
"body": "The market had no follow-through on yesterday’s stimulus-induced rally, as stocks plunged again on Wednesday with the Dow closing below 20\nK for the first time in more than two years.\n\nHowever, the loss narrowed significantly late in the session on a rally sparked by passage of the first relief measure from Congress.\n\nIt was still another sharp decline and all the more disheartening coming after Tuesday’s energetic advance, which had some folks hoping that a bottom was near.\n\nThe Dow plunged 6.3% (or about 1338 points) to 19898.92 for its first close beneath 20\nK since early 2017. The index had a nice recovery from dropping by about 2300 points earlier in the day.\n\nThe S&P dipped 5.18% to 2398.10 and the NASDAQ slipped 4.70% to 6989.84.\n\nThe S&P had been down more than 7% at its worst, which means we tripped a “circuit breaker” for the fourth time in recent days.\n\nThe late rally was probably a reaction to the Senate approving the House’s coronavirus bill, which expands paid leave and unemployment benefits. It also includes free testing for the virus.\n\nMeanwhile, the sickness continues to spread and the country continues to close things down, including the US/Canada border and the NYSE trading floor.
