Locked in this tower like a senile old king... How many years has it been? This life...\nWas it my life, or his? \n\nMy beard almost to my waist, white and thin.\n\nI must look like him now. Though I haven’t seen a mirror in... \nHow long has it been? \n\nI wear his clothes. I use his symbols... His words... his magic... his name...\n\nMirlin.\n\n...So much death in the name of ignorance.\n\nThey call me a hero...\n“The great wizard”  “destroyer of ghouls“\nMurderer... Monster... \n\nToo much power to be wielded by a man... Death with the flick of a wrist.\nSaltpetre... sulphur...\nLike the finger of god. I smote my enemies with a mere gesture. \nWith this wand.\n\nEverything smells of it now, like some vile apothecary.  My clothes...my life...\n\nI remember when I first smelled it...\n\nI thought he was a woman as I ran through the field toward him. His strange dance in slow motion. His sleeves hung from his limbs like moss draped from a willow tree. \nThe wolf at my heels kept me from realizing its beauty until much later.\n\nThere was crack of thunder, closer than I had ever heard, and with a yelp of terror, the wolf darted back into the forest. Face down in the grass crying into my arms, I felt his hand on my shoulder.  “Ok now boy. You get up.” \nI raised my head a little. What strange shoes, I remember thinking. \n\n“Ok boy. Come now.”\n\nHe helped me to my feet.\n\nBlue smoke...that now too familiar smell...\n\nHe was a traveler from a land to the far-east.\nI was a traveler now as well... a lost boy. My mother died to bring me life. My father, a scribe by trade, killed fighting off a ghoul who was stealing our sheep weeks before.\n\nWe would travel together, Mirlin and I. \nI asked him later what music he was dancing to that day. He told me I would know when I heard it... I never did.\nWe wandered for years. \n\nHe pulled a cart twice his size like a two legged ox. It was filed with the artefacts of his travels, curiosities that boggled the mind.  “Magic” is what most people called it.\n\nI asked so many questions of him, but he always seemed able to answer everything to some satisfaction, even in his broken tongue. \n\n“What of Dragons?” I would ask. “Only the bones of stone.” He explained. “Same as here.”\nHis people believed dragons were gods of the heavens rather than beasts of the skies, to be revered rather than slain.\nHe said the robes he wore were spun from the silk of worms. \nMagic...\n\nI asked him about the thunder powder... the blue smoke that fills my nostrils even now, the black sand that has consumes me. \n\n\nI had to watch him carefully to learn its secrets. He would not tell me how it was made and the recipe was written in his runes. I could not read them. They looked like little houses. Saltpetre...sulphur... \nToo much power even for a king. \nThe old man would die eventually. Like everything my life has touched. \nIt was my turn to pull the cart. \nI stopped in the great city and opened a small shop filled with the collection of magics from far-away lands. Mirlin’s Magic Shoppe... It was meant to be in his honour, but by now I had taken his name. I had been called “boy” for so long, I didn’t even remember my own name.\n\nAt night I tinkered with the powder. Adding to the mixture, taking away... White, Orange, Yellow as bright as the sun. Flashes from my top floor window soon drew the attention of neighbours. \n\nEventually I understood enough to show them the power I had harnessed.\n\nThat first night in the square truly was magic.\nMany in the crowd ran when I lit the first charge and by the time I had lit the final one, some were laughing and smiling...others wept. I now find the latter response the more appropriate of the two.\n\nMy fame as a great wizard grew with each demonstration, eventually reaching the king himself.  He sent 3 great knights to request my audience. Growing reports of monsters in the countryside’s were creeping into the cities. There were rumours that the dwarves had been all but wiped out by goblins in the mines, though no one had seen them. Wild giants from the north had ransacked cities on the coast. \n\nAnd the ghouls... those vile nightmares... \nPale faces... like ghosts. Hair as white as crisp snow... even the young.\n...Those cold red eyes.\n\nI still remember it’s face that night...\nThe door swung open and my father stumbled back in terror. The ghoul was holding a dead sheep in his hands, an almost sad and desperate gaze of hunger on his face.\n\n“Fetch my blade boy!” Father shouted. I stood in shock, mouth gaped, almost mimicking the look on the ghoul’s face.\n\nFather lunged at the door with his fist raised.  The ghoul dropped the dead sheep at his feet. In a blink father was thrown to the floor. I remember hearing two thuds. The ghoul had run back into the darkness from whence it came before I noticed that father was dead. His skull cracked on table beside the door.\n\nI know the face I made then... I saw it on the young ghoul’s faces whose fathers were felled by my magic... with a flick of this wrist. With a wave of this wand, the last ghoul fell.\n\nThey were not monsters.  They were the moon to the sun of mankind. \n\nThe sun has destroyed the moon... and here I rot.\n</left>",

It’s like racism in chameleons. We were that colour once... Maybe just not as bright.\n\nThey call me the kite. It’s a derogatory intelligence term that basically means I’m expendable. The premise being that you can fly the kite out there to collect whatever information you need and If a storm comes on the horizon, in the form of, say a lawsuit, or some sort of criminal justice prosecution, then you can just cut the string and walk away. Plausible deniability; the kite was out there flying on its own. You had no knowledge of what it was doing. It must have been someone else’s. I’ve posed as investment bankers, recruiters for large corporations, C.E.O.s, you name it. Some might call me a con man. I prefer the term social engineer. \n\nMy latest client goes by the name of J-Zeus; an odd fellow. I know less about him than the usual suits I deal with. Payments are made in cash, usually left with a new thirty five dollar cellphone in a drop specified via cryptic text messages. Needless to say, this is not my usual modus operandi. I’m used to dealing with stuffy old white men in expensive suits climbing over each other to get some secrets: corporate espionage. Might sound like strange work, but that’s me... Well, that was me. Not much seems to be normal these days.\n\n It’s been about two years since the law was passed making I.S.P.’s responsible for monitoring net usage for illegal activity. It didn’t seem like a big deal in the beginning. A few software pirates would have to buy the new Photoshop, a few kids would have to save up for that new DVD or the odd Video Game. Turns out to be worse than that, a lot worse... Combined with increased use of digital rights management, what we’ve ended up with is something that would make George Orwell squirm. Or maybe just say “I told ya so”, either way, that’s where J-Zeus comes in. I don’t know how he found me, but I’m glad he did, I needed the cash. He’s part of a group that call themselves the Information Liberation Front. Couldn’t google it... too risky. I never heard of them... but who knows what the I.S.P.s have flagged. I asked a few of the Japanese guys down at the arcade. They had a feel for this kind of thing and you’d be surprised what you can learn over a good game of Street Fighter. \n\n“Ah... Leality Haka” one particularly slick looking player said, tipping his head up slightly as he jumped my fireball and kicked me in the head. I’d played him before, he always chose Chun Li. Always wore a dust mask.\n\n“Reality Hacker?” I landed an uppercut as he stepped into me. \n\nHe winced a little. “Yeah... You know. Hacksu Leality.” \n\nI glanced at him for what felt like half a blink, trying to read his lips through the dust mask that covered his mouth. No, I didn’t know... but I couldn’t ask more. When my eyes had focused back on the screen I was being tossed through the air like a bag of digital laundry. A shrill 8-bit laugh crackled from the speaker. \n\n“You lose this time kyuuha. Thanks for game.” He slapped a hand over the two fives on the game cabinet and slipped the bills into his pocket before disappearing through the crowd. The phone hummed in my pocket. It was a text from J-Zeus.\n\n*go home. grab a snack. long day 2morrow. say hi to dan for me. Jz*\n\nDan was the concierge at my condo. When I walked in he was smiling from behind the security desk. \n\n“Hi Dan.” I smiled back.\n\n“Good evening Mr. Harvey. Got a package for you.” He pulled a small box out from under the counter and set it on top.\n\n“Thanks Dan.” I said, picking up the package and tucking it under my arm.\n\n“Oh, and I got those tickets you wanted.” He slid an envelope across the counter.\n\n“You’re the best Dan.” \n\n“I know it Mr. H.”\n\nI walked down the hall towards the elevators, stuffing the envelope into my coat pocket. “Tickets” was code. What he meant was warez. Besides being a top notch concierge, Dan was also one of the best dealers in the city. Apps, games, music, you name it. He could even get you real tickets if you needed them. This is the way things were done now. There was no napster, no limewire, no mininova or pirate bay. If you wanted warez you had to find a dealer, and Dan really was the best. It’s not that I couldn’t afford this stuff. It just wasn’t worth the risk in my line of business. You couldn’t just walk into a store and buy software anymore. I would have to go through an I.S.P. Listening to a certain band and preferring a certain photo editing software probably wouldn’t get me flagged, but you could never be sure. If they wanted to put you in jail for the rest of your life, it would be as easy as editing a few usage logs. A little kiddie porn here, a DRM cracker there and nobody would be the wiser. No thanks. I’ll stick with Dan. I had no connection in my condo anyway.\n\nAs I swiped the key card through the lock on my condo door, I kept thinking about the message from J-Zeus. A snack... Long day tomorrow? I miss the obvious innuendo of my old clients. I even miss their tired faces. I used to feel like James Bond. Now it was more like David Hasselhoff. \n\nSlumping down into the nearest chair I opened the envelope from Dan and dumped the contents onto the glass table; two USB key drives and half quarter of weed. It’s like racism in chameleons. We were that colour once... Maybe just not as bright.\n\nThey call me the kite. It’s a derogatory intelligence term that basically means I’m expendable. The premise being that you can fly the kite out there to collect whatever information you need and If a storm comes on the horizon, in the form of, say a lawsuit, or some sort of criminal justice prosecution, then you can just cut the string and walk away. Plausible deniability; the kite was out there flying on its own. You had no knowledge of what it was doing. It must have been someone else’s. I’ve posed as investment bankers, recruiters for large corporations, C.E.O.s, you name it. Some might call me a con man. I prefer the term social engineer. \n\nMy latest client goes by the name of J-Zeus; an odd fellow. I know less about him than the usual suits I deal with. Payments are made in cash, usually left with a new thirty five dollar cellphone in a drop specified via cryptic text messages. Needless to say, this is not my usual modus operandi. I’m used to dealing with stuffy old white men in expensive suits climbing over each other to get some secrets: corporate espionage. Might sound like strange work, but that’s me... Well, that was me. Not much seems to be normal these days.\n\n It’s been about two years since the law was passed making I.S.P.’s responsible for monitoring net usage for illegal activity. It didn’t seem like a big deal in the beginning. A few software pirates would have to buy the new Photoshop, a few kids would have to save up for that new DVD or the odd Video Game. Turns out to be worse than that, a lot worse... Combined with increased use of digital rights management, what we’ve ended up with is something that would make George Orwell squirm. Or maybe just say “I told ya so”, either way, that’s where J-Zeus comes in. I don’t know how he found me, but I’m glad he did, I needed the cash. He’s part of a group that call themselves the Information Liberation Front. Couldn’t google it... too risky. I never heard of them... but who knows what the I.S.P.s have flagged. I asked a few of the Japanese guys down at the arcade. They had a feel for this kind of thing and you’d be surprised what you can learn over a good game of Street Fighter. \n\n“Ah... Leality Haka” one particularly slick looking player said, tipping his head up slightly as he jumped my fireball and kicked me in the head. I’d played him before, he always chose Chun Li. Always wore a dust mask.\n\n“Reality Hacker?” I landed an uppercut as he stepped into me. \n\nHe winced a little. “Yeah... You know. Hacksu Leality.” \n\nI glanced at him for what felt like half a blink, trying to read his lips through the dust mask that covered his mouth. No, I didn’t know... but I couldn’t ask more. When my eyes had focused back on the screen I was being tossed through the air like a bag of digital laundry. A shrill 8-bit laugh crackled from the speaker. \n\n“You lose this time kyuuha. Thanks for game.” He slapped a hand over the two fives on the game cabinet and slipped the bills into his pocket before disappearing through the crowd. The phone hummed in my pocket. It was a text from J-Zeus.\n\n*go home. grab a snack. long day 2morrow. say hi to dan for me. Jz*\n\nDan was the concierge at my condo. When I walked in he was smiling from behind the security desk. \n\n“Hi Dan.” I smiled back.\n\n“Good evening Mr. Harvey. Got a package for you.” He pulled a small box out from under the counter and set it on top.\n\n“Thanks Dan.” I said, picking up the package and tucking it under my arm.\n\n“Oh, and I got those tickets you wanted.” He slid an envelope across the counter.\n\n“You’re the best Dan.” \n\n“I know it Mr. H.”\n\nI walked down the hall towards the elevators, stuffing the envelope into my coat pocket. “Tickets” was code. What he meant was warez. Besides being a top notch concierge, Dan was also one of the best dealers in the city. Apps, games, music, you name it. He could even get you real tickets if you needed them. This is the way things were done now. There was no napster, no limewire, no mininova or pirate bay. If you wanted warez you had to find a dealer, and Dan really was the best. It’s not that I couldn’t afford this stuff. It just wasn’t worth the risk in my line of business. You couldn’t just walk into a store and buy software anymore. I would have to go through an I.S.P. Listening to a certain band and preferring a certain photo editing software probably wouldn’t get me flagged, but you could never be sure. If they wanted to put you in jail for the rest of your life, it would be as easy as editing a few usage logs. A little kiddie porn here, a DRM cracker there and nobody would be the wiser. No thanks.
