| title | The Thing About Digital Ownership |
| body | I’m fascinated by big, abstract economic questions and their implications. Tying current events to big picture stuff is always fun. So I was reading about monetary policies proposed by some countries this morning and something dawned on me. You know how many years ago folks owned physical coins/precious metals and used that for most of the trading? So back then when, say, gold was diluted in the coins, you felt it – it was kind of like the ancient version of inflation. In the last century we moved to the debt-based system, where Central Banks and governments can print currency and essentially conjure value into existence under the premise that future productivity will pay this printing off. We call this debt-based money fiat currency. You don’t really “feel” it in the same way. Most of this stuff is very abstract and beyond your control or even imagination. If the authorities want to close or investigate your bank account, they just do it. Your transactions can be denied for any reason, merchant accounts frozen, access to funds restricted, etc. You need implicit permission of others to own your money. Cryptocurrencies flip this stuff And I don’t mean to sound like one of those evangelist guys, I actually mean this stuff – these are not buzzwords. Think about it: we hear a lot about government “crackdowns” on cryptocurrencies and regulations and all that stuff. The funny thing, though? Everyone feels it again, the market is going nuts because of it. You need to physically get in there and get someone’s key in order to stop them from making transactions. Or, if you are dealing with them, you on an individual level have to stop the deal and nobody can come in and stop it for you. No credit card company, no bank, no government. We’re back to that same concept of trading with coins again. You are the guy or gal who gives permission, you don’t need to receive one to have access to your funds. This is why we hear so many news about crypto regulations and all that. You cannot do regulations quietly, it’s basically like coming down into someone’s house and digging through their safe. People notice. Neighbours notice. And when they notice, they talk about it. So, say, when something is being discussed in Congress, you know what it’s going to do to your crypto-wallet, because you “feel” it. The Takeaway This stuff is not abstract anymore. We rarely talk about this, yet it’s is the paradigm shift that Bitcoin and other cryptos bring to the table. It’s about owning your assets in a real, tangible, traceable way where no other party has access to them without a certain degree of your permission. And if they don’t have it, they have to use direct violence or fraud to get access to your stuff. All’s down to an individual level, you can’t collectively control or restrict this kind of currency. So when you hear news about regulations affecting the price of crypto or something next time, think back on this article and soak in the new perspective – there are different levels of power at play. The future is an exciting place to live in. |

| body | Going back around one thousand years, there was this dude Basil II - Emperor of the Byzantines. The guy has a lengthy Wiki-page for a reason, did a ton of stuff over his lifetime. During his reign the Empire grew in size a bunch, the man was a mover and shaker. Big, important Emperor. Also an almost cartoonishly evil emefer. Just how evil, you may ask? Bulgarians have a history of scuffling with Byzantines. One of their great revolts happened to coincide with Basil's reign. He didn't make it pretty. 15 000 Bulgarians were taken prisoner and broken into groups of 100. Then 99 of every 100 men were blinded, leaving a one-eyed man in each cohort to lead them back home. Is this a true story? Dunno. Although it does remind me of the current Crypto-Investment landscape. We too have cohorts of 99 blind investors and one-eyed evangelists leading them to riches. Only these folks are blinded willfully: they avoid educating themselves and rely on whatever number they read on a listing site they fancy. Some might get places through combination of luck and the one-eyed fella having a clue. Most are gonna get lost along the way and perish. It's not gonna be pretty. Moral of the story? Don't join cohorts. Do your own research. |

| title | If Socrates was pitching IT products to your clients... |
| body | Enter Socrates. Does this fella even need an introduction? Dude was a badass, never personally recorded a single word yet we keep talking about him to this day. I don’t think there is another person in history who ever affected public discourse and thinking more than he did. Anyway, I’m not here for fanboying about ancient history, go read up on this if need be. Socrates had a particular method of communicating that’s gonna be super useful for entrepreneurs, marketers and writers today in explaining difficult stuff. If you are having trouble talking with your prospects about about things like like “Blockchain”, “SaaS”, “devOps” then he is your man. Yes, despite the fact he had no idea what any of this stuff even was. The dude was big on definitions, you see. There is this quote that may or may not have come out of his wise mug: “the beginning of wisdom is the definition of terms“ No idea if this is misattributed, but the sentiment is accurate nonetheless: he would always make sure everyone’s on the same page, and was masterful at it. All Socrates would do is ask questions and suggest answers, and it all suddenly made sense. People’s minds were blown at the end by some revelation or another. And when they weren’t, we the readers would still be on the site of Socrates because of this one trick he used. See, his dialogues were all about defining stuff during the conversation with the other person. That’s the key. The dialogue partner (or debate adversary) would always play a big role in the conversation, even if they ended up looking like an idiot and got schooled. Now, you can’t make your writing and content as interactive as a dialogue. But you can take the general spirit of Socrates and apply it in your communication. Explore with your audience. Take them on a journey, one thing flowing into the next one. If you’re using big words – make sure that they know them 100% of the time, or make sure that exploring the definitions behind these words is an important part of said journey. The takeaway? Don’t talk at them, define concepts with them. So simple, yet so few people actually embody this principle. Most are too stuck up their own product or service to look outside and see the person on the other end of the screen. Don’t be that marketing guy who praises the product to high heaven only to bring in a bunch of clueless customers who have no damn idea what they bought into. You’ll regret this when the support/QA bill rolls in. I’m looking at you, “decentralized peerless platform” peeps. So, that’s the first lesson in explaining complex stuff. I decided to start from the ground up and move to more complex stuff in later lessons. In the meantime, hit me up at https://alexpartin.com if you don’t have time to do the heavy lifting on this stuff yourself. I still recommend you do, but ain’t judging. I am philosophical about this. |

| title | Our money isn’t perfect. In fact, it kinda sucks. [Bitcoin vs Fiat] |
| body | ## Certain ideas in economics are like contradictory religious beliefs. People sink down the rabbit hole of some line of thinking and rarely stop to look around for scenarios in which they may be wrong. And I’m not saying this from a place of zen-like perfection, I’ve been tempted by this too many times in my life, likely still am in some areas. *This picture has the power of dividing audiences into warring tribes.* Which is why it’s a habit of mine to periodically re-evaluate the fundamentals behind ideas and decisions. Well, that and I also prefer when me and other people aren’t colossally wrong. Especially about things like business and economics. Doubly so when they’re claiming to be experts in those fields and take on advising others what to do. I noticed this often happens with this one idea about the functions of money. I don’t know which of these expert fellas first applied it to evaluating the viability of cryptocurrencies as money. Nonetheless, I now heard it in dozens of different places and read countless opinion pieces on the subject. What tipped the scales for me was hearing this from a business analyst in a conversation. To explain my frustration with an analogy: some random guy in a subway being clueless about human anatomy is unlikely to be an issue. If that guy is a practicing surgeon, though? That’s where we enter the danger zone. I have to step in and make sense of this before people start losing limbs and/or profits. ## **THE MONEY CONUNDRUM** *Here’s the argument:* According to Economics 101, money is commonly defined by its three main functions. It serves as: * Medium of exchange * Store of value * Unit of account Pretty easy, right? You have giving/getting stuff, having stuff and knowing what stuff costs as the **three pillars of money**. This can be dollars, pesos or sea shells for all we care, they can all serve these functions. So at some point in time someone who just took their first econ lecture came up with applying this argument with cryptocurrencies. You compare them to fiat (USD for simplicity) in all three of these areas and it looks something like this: * As a medium of exchange, cryptocurrencies fall short in ease of transactions, have privacy issues and aren’t accepted in nearly enough places for it to be worthwhile. * As a store of value, they’re highly volatile and there’s no way in hell to predict what they will cost even a day from now, making economic calculations almost impossible. * As a unit of account, they’re made obsolete by the above two not working out, so you can’t adequately measure the price of anything. Decent argument, right? Compared to USD, cryptocurrencies fall flat on all three and are an inferior medium of exchange. Done and dusted. Some even go further and conclude that they can’t and shouldn’t be used as money due to the above limitations. Which is the same as saying that because the plane built by the Wright Brothers wasn’t fit for commercial travel, the entire aviation industry is bunk. *Completely unrelated picture of Orville and Wilbur looking at you. They’re not judging.* … let’s not go to the extremely dumb end of the spectrum on this argument and just stick with a «today», shall we? So cryptocurrencies don’t work so well as money today. *Fair enough.* ## **UP IS DOWN, BLACK IS WHITE** Let’s go on a mental journey, to a land where this is flipped. Let’s say a cryptocurrency is king where we are. Hell, let’s even say it’s Bitcoin, with all its current flaws. So you have the transactions that can take hours, the concerns about privacy and the high transaction costs when the network is clogged. Which would be always in our upside down land. It’s far from perfect is what I’m saying. It kinda sucks. We would have to sign checks to confirm that we did in fact pay for that meal at the restaurant, so the owner has some proof in case transaction is cancelled or fails for some reason. Everything would be slightly delayed, right? So we’re not in some market heaven with the perfect currency, our money still kinda sucks. But hey, we’ve all come to use it and bit that bullet. Now it’s not volatile because everyone uses it (actually, it’s a deflationary currency, so it slowly but steadily grows in price), it’s accepted almost everywhere and we measure the cost of most things in Bitcoin. Then our business analyst friend, let’s call him Sam, comes along: > Oi guys! > Our money isn’t perfect. In fact, it kinda sucks. I came up with a far better alternative. > I called it the USD. Don’t ask why, I just did. > **Check this out:** it’s instant and sometimes anonymous transactions! I have a bunch of these pieces of paper that I can give to someone, and they basically represent stuff we’re gonna do later — our future productivity, yo! It’s totally debt-based. > I’m just gonna be issuing as many of these as I think we can pay back in the future. Heck we can even write them into computers as strings of numbers so we don’t have to pass paper around, don’t matter. > So I’ll just write as much of these as I think we need for it to work and stuff. > I’ll be totally fair about this and only get into as much debt as the economy can pay off, for real! I’m super smart and know exactly when and how to pull that leaver. So all of you dudes and dudettes can enjoy almost instant, cheap transactions. > When you pay with these numbers in computers instead of paper, I’ll know and will be able to stop or cut you off — but I’ll only do this sorta thing with criminals, so you got nothing to worry about, no privacy concerns like with that Bitcoin we all use. It’ll be great! > Why are you looking at me like that? *Sam is… quite the idea man.* Oh, Sam, mate, I’m thinking about the three functions of money. This is my thinking look. *Just had my first lecture in an econ class, actually.* ## **BRINGING IT ALL BACK AROUND** You see, Sam, this can’t possibly work today. Maybe in some future world where your USD isn’t just ideas and promises you came up with, but there’s no way we can do any of this and use it as money. *Compare this USD of yours to Bitcoin:* * As a medium of exchange, we’ve got no idea how much these promises of yours cost, you’ll have full control over how many you make, and this thing won’t be accepted anywhere unless you convince or force people to do so. * As a store of value, they’ll depend on your authority, so there’s no way to predict if you’ll have any even a day from now, making economic calculations almost impossible. * As a unit of account, they’re made obsolete by the above two not working out, so you can’t adequately measure the price of anything. Not to mention stuff is always going to get more expensive as this USD thing inflates over time. I guess the thing you have on us is transaction speed. **We’re working on that.** ## **MAKING SENSE OF VALUE** Great trip! Back into the normal world — let’s bookend this thing. The perspective flip we did just now isn’t an argument for cryptocurrencies and against fiat, but a rejection of the deterministic thinking people sink into. You can easily rally around any dominant medium of exchange in any historical period with such statements. Yes, even seashells. Thing is, three functions of money aren’t intended to simply slap judgements on. There’s actually a gazillion factors we use to determine if something works for us as money or not, and they’re prioritized on an individual basis, applied to any given situation. We have to understand where value comes from in the first place to make sense of anything. Value is generated by **people making decisions.** We didn’t have the choice of cryptocurrencies before — now we do. So, this is exactly what’s happening: countless individuals are determining the viability of cryptocurrencies as money, in real time, as you’re reading this. We’re experimenting and slowly building up different forms of consensus. Notice, for example, how prices on lots of coins are often calculated and displayed in BTC. In these cases, we decided that it works better than USD for measuring their value. *We also started measuring the price of graphics units in monthly salaries.* There are people out there who will find cryptocurrencies a superior money to fiat no matter what, they tick all the requirements for them. Just like there those who can do the same with seashells, for that matter — and if they work better in their circumstances, then they’re objectively using better money. Like doctors are supposed to understand anatomy, businessfolk are supposed to understand economics. Bad analysis kills opportunities as efficiently as medical malpractice kills people. It’s important to not only think about the seen, but also the unseen — what is and what could be. Human decisions involve lots of factors. We’re not Borg with the same priorities for everyone. Lack of widespread adoption might be turning some people off and attracting others for the same reasons. This is what differentiates economics from social engineering. Experiment. Exchange value with other people and make the world a better place. Don’t let others decide what the superior form of money is. **Make your own mind up.** *And hey, I may not be a business analyst, but do operate a bit like a surgeon. I also have 4–5+ week waiting lists, making the analogy fit even better. If you want to receive daily tips & insights, go to https://alexpartin.com* |

"title": "Our money isn’t perfect. In fact, it kinda sucks. [Bitcoin vs Fiat]",
"body": "## Certain ideas in economics are like contradictory religious beliefs.\n\nPeople sink down the rabbit hole of some line of thinking and rarely stop to look around for scenarios in which they may be wrong. And I’m not saying this from a place of zen-like perfection, I’ve been tempted by this too many times in my life, likely still am in some areas.\n\n\n*This picture has the power of dividing audiences into warring tribes.*\n\nWhich is why it’s a habit of mine to periodically re-evaluate the fundamentals behind ideas and decisions. Well, that and I also prefer when me and other people aren’t colossally wrong. Especially about things like business and economics. Doubly so when they’re claiming to be experts in those fields and take on advising others what to do.\n\nI noticed this often happens with this one idea about the functions of money.\n\nI don’t know which of these expert fellas first applied it to evaluating the viability of cryptocurrencies as money. Nonetheless, I now heard it in dozens of different places and read countless opinion pieces on the subject.\n\nWhat tipped the scales for me was hearing this from a business analyst in a conversation. To explain my frustration with an analogy: some random guy in a subway being clueless about human anatomy is unlikely to be an issue. If that guy is a practicing surgeon, though? That’s where we enter the danger zone.\n\nI have to step in and make sense of this before people start losing limbs and/or profits.\n\n## **THE MONEY CONUNDRUM**\n*Here’s the argument:*\n\nAccording to Economics 101, money is commonly defined by its three main functions. It serves as:\n\n* Medium of exchange\n* Store of value\n* Unit of account\n\nPretty easy, right? You have giving/getting stuff, having stuff and knowing what stuff costs as the **three pillars of money**. This can be dollars, pesos or sea shells for all we care, they can all serve these functions.\n\nSo at some point in time someone who just took their first econ lecture came up with applying this argument with cryptocurrencies. You compare them to fiat (USD for simplicity) in all three of these areas and it looks something like this:\n\n* As a medium of exchange, cryptocurrencies fall short in ease of transactions, have privacy issues and aren’t accepted in nearly enough places for it to be worthwhile.\n* As a store of value, they’re highly volatile and there’s no way in hell to predict what they will cost even a day from now, making economic calculations almost impossible.\n* As a unit of account, they’re made obsolete by the above two not working out, so you can’t adequately measure the price of anything.\nDecent argument, right? Compared to USD, cryptocurrencies fall flat on all three and are an inferior medium of exchange.\n\nDone and dusted.\n\nSome even go further and conclude that they can’t and shouldn’t be used as money due to the above limitations. Which is the same as saying that because the plane built by the Wright Brothers wasn’t fit for commercial travel, the entire aviation industry is bunk.\n\n\n*Completely unrelated picture of Orville and Wilbur looking at you. They’re not judging.*\n\n… let’s not go to the extremely dumb end of the spectrum on this argument and just stick with a «today», shall we? So cryptocurrencies don’t work so well as money today.\n\n*Fair enough.*\n\n## **UP IS DOWN, BLACK IS WHITE**\nLet’s go on a mental journey, to a land where this is flipped.\n\nLet’s say a cryptocurrency is king where we are.\n\nHell, let’s even say it’s Bitcoin, with all its current flaws.\n\nSo you have the transactions that can take hours, the concerns about privacy and the high transaction costs when the network is clogged. Which would be always in our upside down land. It’s far from perfect is what I’m saying.\n\nIt kinda sucks. We would have to sign checks to confirm that we did in fact pay for that meal at the restaurant, so the owner has some proof in case transaction is cancelled or fails for some reason.\n\nEverything would be slightly delayed, right?\n\nSo we’re not in some market heaven with the perfect currency, our money still kinda sucks. But hey, we’ve all come to use it and bit that bullet. Now it’s not volatile because everyone uses it (actually, it’s a deflationary currency, so it slowly but steadily grows in price), it’s accepted almost everywhere and we measure the cost of most things in Bitcoin.\n\nThen our business analyst friend, let’s call him Sam, comes along:\n\n> Oi guys! \n> Our money isn’t perfect. In fact, it kinda sucks. I came up with a far better alternative.\n> I called it the USD. Don’t ask why, I just did.\n\n> **Check this out:** it’s instant and sometimes anonymous transactions! I have a bunch of these pieces of paper that I can give to someone, and they basically represent stuff we’re gonna do later — our future productivity, yo! It’s totally debt-based.\n> I’m just gonna be issuing as many of these as I think we can pay back in the future. Heck we can even write them into computers as strings of numbers so we don’t have to pass paper around, don’t matter.\n\n> So I’ll just write as much of these as I think we need for it to work and stuff.\n> I’ll be totally fair about this and only get into as much debt as the economy can pay off, for real! I’m super smart and know exactly when and how to pull that leaver. So all of you dudes and dudettes can enjoy almost instant, cheap transactions.\n> When you pay with these numbers in computers instead of paper, I’ll know and will be able to stop or cut you off — but I’ll only do this sorta thing with criminals, so you got nothing to worry about, no privacy concerns like with that Bitcoin we all use. It’ll be great!\n\n> Why are you looking at me like that?\n\n\n*Sam is… quite the idea man.*\n\nOh, Sam, mate, I’m thinking about the three functions of money. This is my thinking look.\n\n*Just had my first lecture in an econ class, actually.*\n\n## **BRINGING IT ALL BACK AROUND**\n\nYou see, Sam, this can’t possibly work today.\n\nMaybe in some future world where your USD isn’t just ideas and promises you came up with, but there’s no way we can do any of this and use it as money.\n\n*Compare this USD of yours to Bitcoin:*\n\n* As a medium of exchange, we’ve got no idea how much these promises of yours cost, you’ll have full control over how many you make, and this thing won’t be accepted anywhere unless you convince or force people to do so.\n* As a store of value, they’ll depend on your authority, so there’s no way to predict if you’ll have any even a day from now, making economic calculations almost impossible.\n* As a unit of account, they’re made obsolete by the above two not working out, so you can’t adequately measure the price of anything.\n\nNot to mention stuff is always going to get more expensive as this USD thing inflates over time. I guess the thing you have on us is transaction speed.\n\n**We’re working on that.**\n\n## **MAKING SENSE OF VALUE**\nGreat trip! Back into the normal world — let’s bookend this thing.\n\nThe perspective flip we did just now isn’t an argument for cryptocurrencies and against fiat, but a rejection of the deterministic thinking people sink into. | body | My friend served around 10 years as a ship mechanic. They had a certain way of testing the clueless “green” recruits. Here's his favorite story: One new guy approached while he was chilling: – "Mate, where do I collect these measurements?” – "Left of the senior mechanic’s quarters" – "… sorry, where’s that?" – the new guy shook his head. – “Oh. Near where the artelka is” – Russian slang for ship storage place. – “... Where’s the artelka?” – the guy sighs, defeated. – “Goddamit. It’s right next to where the emergency brake is. Go bother someone else" * The fella runs around the ship, asks everyone where the emergency brake is. They’re all assholes about it. * His superior overhears and gives the kid an ass-whooping. Didn’t even stop for a second to think that there’s no gorram emergency brake ON A SHIP. I love this little story. I see this kind of stuff like this in my line of work. Someone says something and then folks run around repeating it verbatim. Case in point: Question of “compliance”. Now everyone screams how whatever crypto they have is gonna be “compliant”. Someone smart said it once, so it’s a thing now. I should also use ridiculous words as counter-marketing, for funsies. But you guys are too smart for that to ever work… right? |

| body | Hello anster! Welcome to Steemit! Hope you'll like the community here. As a start, here are 5 tips that we believe will be helpful to you: 1. **Keep your passwords safe:** Unlike conventional sites, Steemit has 4 types of passwords. Each offers varying degrees of access to your account, so know where and when to use each of them. Also, make sure to keep them all safe and secure. 2. **Get Steem rewards:** When writing a post, you'll have the option to choose how to receive your reward: "Default 50%/50%" or "Power Up 100%". As of this moment, choosing Default 50%/50% is the better option. But this can change over time. Check our post to know more. 3. **Upvote wisely:** When upvoting, wait at least 30 minutes after the post is published to maximize your curation reward. Also, make sure not to upvote too much too fast so as not to drain your voting power. 4. **Know your Steem, Steem Dollars and Steem Power:** Steem and Steem Dollars are the 2 main currencies here. Convert and power up more Steem into Steem Power so you can have higher values on your upvotes. 5. **Have Fun and Enjoy!** _For a detailed writeup, check our post [Getting Started: 5 Essential Tips for New Users](https://steemit.com/@steemsociety/getting-started-5-essential-tips-for-new-users)._ Good luck on your Steem journey! Follow us if you like to receive more helpful tips and maximize your Steemit experience. |

"body": "Hello anster! Welcome to Steemit! Hope you'll like the community here. As a start, here are 5 tips that we believe will be helpful to you:\n1. **Keep your passwords safe:** Unlike conventional sites, Steemit has 4 types of passwords. Each offers varying degrees of access to your account, so know where and when to use each of them. Also, make sure to keep them all safe and secure.\n2. **Get Steem rewards:** When writing a post, you'll have the option to choose how to receive your reward: \"Default 50%/50%\" or \"Power Up 100%\". As of this moment, choosing Default 50%/50% is the better option. But this can change over time. Check our post to know more.\n3. **Upvote wisely:** When upvoting, wait at least 30 minutes after the post is published to maximize your curation reward. Also, make sure not to upvote too much too fast so as not to drain your voting power.\n4. **Know your Steem, Steem Dollars and Steem Power:** Steem and Steem Dollars are the 2 main currencies here. Convert and power up more Steem into Steem Power so you can have higher values on your upvotes.\n5. **Have Fun and Enjoy!**\n\n_For a detailed writeup, check our post [Getting Started: 5 Essential Tips for New Users](https://steemit.com/@steemsociety/getting-started-5-essential-tips-for-new-users)._\n\nGood luck on your Steem journey! Follow us if you like to receive more helpful tips and maximize your Steemit experience.\n",

| body | As they say, the best way to learn is to teach. So I'm forever learning all things communication and business development, working primarily in the IT industry and most recently Blockchain. Our industry is in a crisis when it comes to understanding what the hell is going on, despite managing big data. It's way too easy to get lost in the contradictory signals and burn out while the rest of the world is moving past you into the stars. I aim to help entrepreneurs, managers, and founders up their game in various ways, from equipping themselves with better tools to developing a clear vision of where their project is headed. This is why I send out daily e-mails with tips and ideas. To talk a bit about how I got here: I started out in freelance copywriting and moved on to being a technical writer. This was my gateway into the IT world as a whole. Preparing project summaries, marketing materials for software platforms, writing presentations for investors and so on - all this eventually got me into SaaS sales. During my career I arranged web development for SMEs, managed software projects involving Blockchain, organized IT outsourcing for clients in over six countries. All this time I self-studied and worked on my business development; embarked on ventures and built relationships with partners all over the globe. Now I'm back to my roots as a writer with a mission to build mutually beneficial relationships between great projects and audiences. Recently I delved deeper into the Cryptocurrency sphere and often talk about the principles behind Blockchain. I also discuss global industry trends such as IoT, Smart Cities, Machine Learning, etc. My writing is usually about ideas and principles, not always news - usually large themes and long-term ways to build a skill stack that will help position yourself for the coming future.
