We have an obesity problem in the United States, apparently, but if a person is thin they have an unfair advantage and better never do anything to remind a fat person they are fat, even by doing so much as, um, buying a dress in a normal size.\n\nAnd I know from experience, there's nothing like knowing you are twenty pounds overweight and can't wear any of your clothes but having someone laugh at you for not eating extra chocolate because, \"Oh, you look just fine!\"\n\nWell, thank you.       "body": "![](https://cdn.steemitimages.com/DQmcBxmCreew7tZnY1arY6Bt7beY8kZzCjRQkdMpWhrauVk/image.png)\n\nSeveral weeks ago I read a compiled list of tweets about a trend called \"Thin Privilege.\" Instead of trying to explain to you in my own, biased words what TP is, I'll defer to a woman named Cora Harrington who brought this issue to the attention of the public on July 22, 2018. \n\n*\"Hey,\"* Harrington writes *\"You don't have to \"feel thin\" to have thin privilege. Thinness isn't a feeling. If other people perceive you as thin, you are thin. If you are able to walk into any clothing store and expect to see a wide range of options in your size, you are thin.\"* \n\nOk, let's unpack this a little. \n\n- *\"Thinness isn't a feeling.  If other people perceive you as thin, you are thin\"*: Um, okay.  I'm 5'5 and 118 pounds. People generally \"perceive\" me as thin.  According to her, I can't look in the mirror, or at the scale, and decide my thinness based on that.  No, it's all about other people's perception of me, or how easy it is for me to buy clothing.  '\n\n- *\"If you are able to walk into any clothing store and expect to see a wide range of options in your size, you are thin\"*: Funnily enough, when I walk into the average clothing store, there is not a wide range of options in my size.  No, extra-smalls are not especially easy to find, and typically, 2's and 4's are far outranked by 6-14's.  By her standard, that means size 8-10's have thin privilege since they are stocked so heavily in stores.  \n\nIn summery: Clothes shopping being easy doesn't mean you're thin. In fact, it could mean quite the opposite. \n\nNext. \n\n- *\"No one groans or rolls their eyes when they have to sit next to me on a plane or a bus. In fact, no one comments on my body at all\"* I'm glad no one comments on her body.  Makes me wonder why she's complaining to the internet.  The cynical part of me can't help but wonder if the fact no one comments on her body \"at all\" is a source of bitterness for Harrington. \n\n- *\"The ability to move through life without people insisting you need to be a smaller size...if you don't have to think about that, it's privilege.\"* People always feel the need to comment on my appearance.  The length of my hair, whether they like me better with curly or straight hair, the amount of makeup I wear, if I'm looking too thin, if I'm looking tired.  People share their opinions on other people's appearance, whether solicited or not.  How is size any different? This has nothing to do with being fat or thin, privileged or not.  Last, but not least, I do think about my weight and body.  1, because I exercise 5-6 days a week to keep it in good shape, and 2, because people have made comments to me when they think that I'm looking *too thin.* Now, where does that fit into this whole thin privilege theory?\n\n- *\"No one looks at a photo of me online and tells me I need to lose weight or sees me out and about eating a cookie or an ice cream cone and sneers at me in disgust.\"* If you post a photo to your social media, jerks will say stuff.  Ignore them. But seriously, who sneers at strangers eating a cookie or ice cream? Do people really have nothing better to do? I do personally have moments when I cringe seeing someone at Starbucks with a Venti Frappucinno, but those particular drinks are usually clutched in the hands of stick thin teenagers. It has nothing to do with the size of the person drinking and everything to do with my brain calculating the amount of sugar and calories packed into that giant thing (for those curious, a Venti typically has over 500 calories in it.)\n\nBasically, this whole series of tweets is meant to shame you if you have it easy, and let you know that you can never truly understand how badly others have it.  It's a pretty common position being taken by some in society, basically invalidating you, and any of your struggles since there will always be someone who has it worse than you. \n\nIn closing, I'd also like to note the fact that if you're overweight, it's likely because you have access to a lot of food. Think of all the countries out there that are starving.  If you're eating enough to maintain a high BMI, that means you have access to more than your fair share of food. French macarons are not only pretty, but quite tasty.  They're light, with a little bit of a crunch on the outside, giving way to a softer, meringue texture inside.  Two small cookies make up a sandwich, filled with a firm, frosting type filling, enhancing the light flavor of the cookie.  \n\nTraditional macaron flavors are Vanilla, Lavender, Pistachio, and Berry, but can come in a variety of unique flavors including Nutella, Fruity Pebble, Birthday Cake, Cookies and Cream, S'mores, and Key Lime Pie. In fact, you might say the label millennial gets thrown around, and it's really never in a positive way. We are known for being pampered, never knowing hardships, our need for \"safe spaces\", our inability to function without our phones, and how we've ruined dating by thinking Tinder and serious conversations via text message are the way to develop a lasting relationship.  It's true.  These things have reared their collective heads as part of a ugly culture shift that is taking over our country with tremendous force. Today's generation worry over things like data limits, unfinished seasons of TV shows on Netflix, and which dairy substitute they should get in their Venti Starbucks (guys, avoid soy. For real though.)\n\nThe truth is, we millennials do have our fair share of real struggles. In my generation, relationships between men and women are, at best, a hot mess.  It's acceptable, and relatively normal, to date around, never looking for anything more serious than a hookup with whoever you currently find attractive.  In an article written about the impact of family structure on children, and society in general, it spoke of how many young adults described marriage as \"old fashioned\" and \"confining\", leading them to believe that co-habitation was a healthier way for them to have a relationship, while not giving any more of themselves than required.  This fact probably leads directly into the downhill shift in divorce rates, which were reported in 2016 to be at a 40 year low.   We're experiencing less divorces, because there are less marriages.  Less marriages lead to more children being raised in single parent households, which have been proven to lead to physical, emotional, and academic struggles. \n\nI think a huge disadvantage for my generation was being raised to occupy every spare moment we have focusing on something new.  A phone, a game, a text.  At any given moment, we are never just here, observing our surroundings, thinking about our futures, pondering deep truths. It's a good thing to not always be occupied.  It's a good thing to let our minds wander, to discover and ponder new thoughts and ideas.  Instead, we are reading news media, heavily biased one way or another, or other people's tweets, Facebook feeds, or Instagram captions to form our ideas.  Talk about the blind leading the blind.  \n\nI'm obviously willing to say there are things about my generation that stink, but I won't admit that without pointing to the very obvious elephant in the room.\n\nSimple fact: Cupcake, safe space, Tinder using, head-in-the-cloud (or i-cloud) millennials exist for a very simple reason.  Because their parents and teachers groomed them to be that way.\n\nI can already hear the arguments coming my way. Yes, they're adults, yes, a millennial can be as old as 36 right now, and thus can't blame their parents or teachers for their terrible life choices and lack of clear thought.  To that I would ask this; who answered their questions, and instilled their values in their formative years? Who gave them the tools to hone their thinking skills or their morals? Who impressed their standards and ideals on them?  \n\nUm, yeah.  Parents and teachers again. \n\nMillennials: Life has a purpose, and it's a lot more than the dating scene, the technology scene, or our dream job. Morals are extremely important.  There is *a* truth, and the rest are all lies.  Every generation has faced their hardships and dilemmas and now it's our turn.  We've neither earned nor deserve an easy life. Time to play with the cards we've been dealt.\n\nParents: If you raise your child to be something you hate, you will hate your children.
