| body | Pop culture changes through time. These changes are not consistent on their own but are very unpredictable in so many ways. A quote from Marx (Men make their own history, but they do not make it just as they please…) explains how men deal with culture at present in relation to the history they’ve dealt with in the past. His quote implies that men make history by doing things they want to in the present but their words, thoughts, actions and culture are governed by the way of life that occurred in the past. Culture can still be observed the same way before but there’s also the possibility of modifications, additions and complete changes. Culture as a particular way of life means that it is dynamic. This means that people’s way of life are committed to their environment and certain adjustments must be met at present. Although humans tend to pattern their way of life based on their current environment it is not simply a choice they make for themselves (… they do not make it under circumstances chosen by themselves). Our past plays a role in making our decisions, discovering, inventing, and modifying our culture at present. Let’s take the method of communication as an example. Communication serves as a human need. As human population gradually increases through time, more people come in contact with each other at certain distances. Communication by writing letters on a one-on-one basis will not simply suffice especially since this method takes too much time. Communication today must be fast, reliable and efficient because there’s so much happening around us. The ongoing globalization paved way to the need of keeping up with fast and easy transfer of information. This led to the evolution of letters to phone calls (landline), text messages (cellphones), electronic mail, and online chatting (internet). The certain need of information transfer today grew from the lack of speed and reliability of the old method of communication. Thus, we tried to build new ways of keeping in touch with each other by means of adapting to the current status of technology we have. This transfer of information dominates the world today. The invention of internet took the people by storm. It simply did not arise from the need of knowledge but also the need to keep people updated. The internet as a pop culture, according to Williams (1983) became a work deliberately setting out to win favor with the people. It can practically do anything nowadays. The internet controls each and every one of us. It is not simply a tool or an invention. It evolved into a medium that manipulates the human race. The internet now has every means of changing an individual’s way of life which brought new ways of dealing with pop culture. It controls people’s views and perspectives on what pop culture is and how it should be. Social media serves as a main example of how the internet sets standards on pop culture. Social media has access to almost every information about us. It invades our privacy, our personality and our entire lives. Because of this we become self-conscious about the food we eat, the clothes we wear, the statements we post and the activities we share. It performs all the functions of popular media. It dictates the current trends on fashion, music, celebrities, food and entertainment. Whatever is featured in social media captures the eyes of the public which will later on grow to everyone’s liking. Aside from this function, social media also serves as a way of bringing out what we want to show from ourselves. We bring forth our lives for everyone to see even if it was true or fake. Opinions, statements and views that are either based on facts or stupidity are also shared in the social media. Videos of people who either do good things or bad are recorded and labelled as “viral” or “trending” which means that everyone goes crazy watching them. People can also make real or false statements, ideas and information in social websites which adds to the expansion of either reliable or unreliable data sharing for a large community of social users. A recent example that shows how crucial is the role of internet in our lives is before the elections. People were fighting each other over who’s the best and worst candidates, supporters were bullying each other and friends were eventually breaking up because of misunderstandings. The internet bred a lot of issues among each other which resulted into a chaotic virtual revolution. Politics which was once branded as filthy and dangerous became even more dramatic with the participation of the so-called “netizens” or people from the internet. Hegemony existed when the internet can only be accessed before by small groups of people namely the rich, young and educated. Today, almost everyone has the means to go online. Phones became accessible to the net which made it possible for the masses to create accounts and involve themselves in social media. From a simple tool, the internet became an area of self-expression which turned into pop culture. A once high culture transformed into mass culture which later on served as culture that connects and involves the entire world. The past is not merely a recording of what happened in history. It connects us to our present which eventually allows us to create our own version of our history. Pop culture experienced at present develops from its connection to the past. Nowadays, it is highly influenced by the functions performed by the internet. Just as Andrew Brown once quoted, the internet is so big, so powerful and pointless that for some people it is a completed substitute for life. |

Just as Andrew Brown once quoted, the internet is so big, so powerful and pointless that for some people it is a completed substitute for life. |

| body | Pop culture changes through time. Just as Andrew Brown once quoted, the internet is so big, so powerful and pointless that for some people it is a completed substitute for life. |

| body | Pop culture changes through time. \n\nSocial media serves as a main example of how the internet sets standards on pop culture. \n\nA recent example that shows how crucial is the role of internet in our lives is before the elections. \n\nHegemony existed when the internet can only be accessed before by small groups of people namely the rich, young and educated. \nThe past is not merely a recording of what happened in history. It connects us to our present which eventually allows us to create our own version of our history. Pop culture experienced at present develops from its connection to the past. Nowadays, it is highly influenced by the functions performed by the internet. Just as Andrew Brown once quoted, the internet is so big, so powerful and pointless that for some people it is a completed substitute for life.",

| body | Pop culture changes through time.
