| body | I've been thinking a lot about Jonah lately. The problem with Jonah wasn't that he was afraid to go to Nineveh. It wasn't even that he disobeyed God and ran the opposite direction. I mean, it was located in modern day Mosul, Iraq. These are the great, great, great grandparents of ISIS. If it's a rough place now, imagine it three thousand years ago. Honestly, if God told my to go there and preach Christ in the streets, I might run too. It's hard to blame him. No, the problem with Jonah was that upon preaching repentance and seeing the people were actually repenting, he was disgusted. He looked at the revival taking place and said, “O Lord, is not this what I said when I was yet in my country? That is why I made haste to flee to Tarshish; for I knew that you are a gracious God and merciful, slow to anger and abounding in steadfast love, and relenting from disaster." He looked at the unearned favor God showed towards these people and said, "Nah, bro. Nah." Jonah hated God's grace. Whatever other issues we may see in the story, they are secondary to this. Now, fast forward to today. We live in a culture, just as all cultures, in which some people have certain advantages not afforded to others. These are called privileges, and they are a fact of life. Some people are simply on the far end of the bell curve, be it in terms of beauty, IQ, physical prowess, or otherwise. For some, their parents gave them an edge: "A good man leaves an inheritance to his children's children." In some settings, being the racial majority is an advantage. In others, it is not. In either case, this is an advantage - a privilege - some individuals have that others do not. Whatever the circumstances, for one reason or another, some people are born on third base. And our reaction to this blessing says more about us than them. Privilege is a matter of common grace. As Jesus reminds us, "(God) makes his sun rise on the evil and on the good, and sends rain on the just and on the unjust." Some blessings are of immediate use for all, like rain. Others are systems of being, like the rising and settings sun, that can be utilized to varying effect. But in all cases, these are blessings. They are gifts. Unearned favor. *Grace*. Longing for justice is good. Our God is a God of justice. A heart for the oppressed is something that Jesus had, and it's something we should have. Yes, yes. Good, good. But when a longing of justice for the oppressed becomes bitter resentment for the blessed, we've missed the mark. Love for the poor is not the same as hatred for the rich. Privilege isn't the problem. We should desire *more* privilege applied *more* generously to *more* people, not less. The problem with the social justice movement isn't that they want justice for the oppressed. It's that they hate God's grace. >"Am I not allowed to do what I choose with what belongs to me? Or do you begrudge my generosity?" - Matthew 20:15 |

| body | >"Some trust in chariots and some in horses, but we trust in the name of the the government our god." - Not Psalm 20:7 Last year, there was a big hooplah made about repealing the First Amendment. "It's 2017! Time to make offensive speech illegal!" Today, we've moved on to repealing the Second Amendment. "Who needs guns? We're protected by a militarized police force that kills minorities and is run by a tyrannical dictator that looks like a Cheeto." The joke going around is that civil rights activists used to march to obtain rights, now they march to give rights away. Now, I don't really want to provide a commentary on the Second Amendment. I've done that already. What I want do today is give a little commentary on why we, as a culture, are so jonesing to give rights like the Second Amendment away. It's not just a political issue. It's deeply theological. You see, we live in a secular bubble. And in our secular bubble, we section off religion into it's own little category. What we fail to see is that secularism is its own religion. Man cannot live without God. So when we try, what we end up with is not a life without God, but a life with other gods. The government is one such god. If you look across history, you'll find that as God decreases, government increases. This is not a coincidence. It's an inevitability. We can choose our god, but we cannot live a truly godless life. Rendering ourselves unto God is ingrained into our very being. We want to give ourselves to Him. We want to put our faith, hope, and trust in Him. It's an act of worship. It's what we were created for, and thus it's what we do. And so, it's no surprise that when we make the state into our god, we treat it as such. We praise it with taxes such as we praise God with tithes. We surrender ourselves to our lord, just as the Bible calls us to surrender ourselves to our Lord. It's not that government is bad. It's that we've put it in a seat too big for its $21,051,700,208,427 debt butt. And the tell is pretty easy. Ask yourself this: Which should have a bigger impact in my day-to-day life, God or the government? When I make a purchase, should my mind go to what God thinks of the purchase or what the total will be after tax? If I'm struggling to put food on the table, should my first thought go to how the state will put it there or how God will put it there? When I break the speed limit, should my concern be that I'm transgressing God's law and it hinders my relationship with him or that I'm transgressing the law of the land and might get a ticket? The founding fathers created our country with minimal state governance because they knew that a society that valued God had little need for it. The further we slide away from Him, the bigger we have to build the government, the god we're making our image. >"But my government shall provide all your needs according to its riches in taxes." - Not Philippians 4:19 |

"body": ">\"Some trust in chariots and some in horses, but we trust in the name of the the government our god.\" - Not Psalm 20:7\n\n\n\nLast year, there was a big hooplah made about repealing the First Amendment. \"It's 2017! Time to make offensive speech illegal!\" Today, we've moved on to repealing the Second Amendment. \"Who needs guns? We're protected by a militarized police force that kills minorities and is run by a tyrannical dictator that looks like a Cheeto.\"\n\nThe joke going around is that civil rights activists used to march to obtain rights, now they march to give rights away.\n\nNow, I don't really want to provide a commentary on the Second Amendment. I've done that already. What I want do today is give a little commentary on why we, as a culture, are so jonesing to give rights like the Second Amendment away.\n\nIt's not just a political issue. It's deeply theological.\n\nYou see, we live in a secular bubble. And in our secular bubble, we section off religion into it's own little category. What we fail to see is that secularism is its own religion.\n\nMan cannot live without God. So when we try, what we end up with is not a life without God, but a life with other gods.\n\nThe government is one such god.\n\nIf you look across history, you'll find that as God decreases, government increases. This is not a coincidence. It's an inevitability. We can choose our god, but we cannot live a truly godless life.\n\nRendering ourselves unto God is ingrained into our very being. We want to give ourselves to Him. We want to put our faith, hope, and trust in Him. It's an act of worship. It's what we were created for, and thus it's what we do.\n\nAnd so, it's no surprise that when we make the state into our god, we treat it as such. We praise it with taxes such as we praise God with tithes. We surrender ourselves to our lord, just as the Bible calls us to surrender ourselves to our Lord.\n\nIt's not that government is bad. It's that we've put it in a seat too big for its $21,051,700,208,427 debt butt.\n\nAnd the tell is pretty easy.\n\nAsk yourself this: Which should have a bigger impact in my day-to-day life, God or the government? When I make a purchase, should my mind go to what God thinks of the purchase or what the total will be after tax? If I'm struggling to put food on the table, should my first thought go to how the state will put it there or how God will put it there? When I break the speed limit, should my concern be that I'm transgressing God's law and it hinders my relationship with him or that I'm transgressing the law of the land and might get a ticket?\n\nThe founding fathers created our country with minimal state governance because they knew that a society that valued God had little need for it. The further we slide away from Him, the bigger we have to build the government, the god we're making our image.\n\n>\"But my government shall provide all your needs according to its riches in taxes.\" - Not Philippians 4:19",

| body | >"Have you ever noticed that anybody driving slower than you is an idiot, and anyone going faster than you is a maniac?" - George Carlin One of the great things about comedy is that it allows us to hear important truths without wanting to hang ourselves. It's a medicine with a spoonful of sugar. It makes us laugh *and* think. This is also what makes it so powerful. In medieval times, the only person who could really tell the truth to the king was the court jester. Likewise, comedians have often able to speak truths to the culture that nobody else could. This, perhaps, is one of the reasons Charles Spurgeon became a prolific pastor in his day. "Get them rolling in the aisles, and then kick them in the teeth." People always need the truth, but they don't always want to hear it. But they *do* always want to laugh. And that, I believe, is why trolls are so popular today. Trolls, you say? Yes, trolls. Trolls, in common tongue, are people on the internet who say seemingly stupid things. And granted, some of them really do say stupid things, because some people really are stupid. But that's not an entirely fair representation. Let's not define something by its poorest examples. Trolls, in proper form, are satirists. They are commentators who aim to reveal truths not just through what they say, but how they say it. They are people who understand the power of comedy, and wield it to great effect. Jesus was one such troll. I know... I know... Stave your torches. Don't brandish your pitchforks quite yet. Just hear me out first. A pastor once said that all of Jesus' teachings could be categorized one of three ways: Feeding sheep, shooting wolves, and rebuking swine. Most Christians have no problem with the first, and many understand the necessity of the second. The third is the one they struggle with. Here's an example: >And when he saw their faith, he said, “Man, your sins are forgiven you.” And the scribes and the Pharisees began to question, saying, “Who is this who speaks blasphemies? Who can forgive sins but God alone?” When Jesus perceived their thoughts, he answered them, “Why do you question in your hearts? Which is easier, to say, ‘Your sins are forgiven you,’ or to say, ‘Rise and walk’? But that you may know that the Son of Man has authority on earth to forgive sins”— he said to the man who was paralyzed —“I say to you, rise, pick up your bed and go home.” And immediately he rose up before them and picked up what he had been lying on and went home, glorifying God. -Luke 5:20-25 Jesus was clearly having a little fun at he Pharisees' expense. He could have taken the time to explain how he was the fulfillment of the messianic prophecies, sitting down with them and breaking apart the Old Testament scriptures to show how they necessitated, albeit unexpectedly, that the messiah was not just a man, but God Himself incarnate. He could have then said that, in order to help establish the credibility of this claim, he was going to heal this man by the power of the Holy Spirit, thus demonstrating that he could not be blaspheming. Jesus opted for a different approach. For other examples, check out Matthew 19:24, Matthew 7:3, Matthew 21:24, Matthew 22:21, Matthew 15:3, and Matthew 17:27 (Matthew obviously appreciated Jesus comedic trollery). The big point here is that Christ didn't always say things in a way we would now dub "Christlike." There are many times in which he kindly, patiently explained things. There were other times, however, when he would entertainingly shade the crap out of someone for the benefit of the hearers. He fed the sheep, but he also rebuked the swine. And if we are called to follow in Jesus' footsteps, we do not have the luxury of following him down one of those paths and not the other. Being like Jesus means trolling like Jesus. >"For everything there is a season, and a time for every matter under heaven. A time to speak softly, and a time for lvl 99999 trolling." - Ecclesiastes 3:1-2 AMV |

But that you may know that the Son of Man has authority on earth to forgive sins”— he said to the man who was paralyzed —“I say to you, rise, pick up your bed and go home.” And immediately he rose up before them and picked up what he had been lying on and went home, glorifying God. -Luke 5:20-25\n\nJesus was clearly having a little fun at he Pharisees' expense. He could have taken the time to explain how he was the fulfillment of the messianic prophecies, sitting down with them and breaking apart the Old Testament scriptures to show how they necessitated, albeit unexpectedly, that the messiah was not just a man, but God Himself incarnate. He could have then said that, in order to help establish the credibility of this claim, he was going to heal this man by the power of the Holy Spirit, thus demonstrating that he could not be blaspheming.\n\nJesus opted for a different approach.\n\nFor other examples, check out Matthew 19:24, Matthew 7:3, Matthew 21:24, Matthew 22:21, Matthew 15:3, and Matthew 17:27 (Matthew obviously appreciated Jesus comedic trollery).\n\nThe big point here is that Christ didn't always say things in a way we would now dub \"Christlike.\" There are many times in which he kindly, patiently explained things. There were other times, however, when he would entertainingly shade the crap out of someone for the benefit of the hearers. \n\nHe fed the sheep, but he also rebuked the swine. And if we are called to follow in Jesus' footsteps, we do not have the luxury of following him down one of those paths and not the other. Being like Jesus means trolling like Jesus.\n\n>\"For everything there is a season, and a time for every matter under heaven. A time to speak softly, and a time for lvl 99999 trolling.\" - Ecclesiastes 3:1-2 AMV",

| body | A structured education is essential. Public schools do not provide much of that and have many problems besides, such as you mention, and in my experience private schooling is a mixed-bag. My concern would be (were I a parent) that it may be difficult to provide this when homeschooling. A tutor might help but then you'd better make sure to be on the same page and clearly delegate certain authority to the tutor. |

| author | andrewhaack |
| body | This year, my wife and I had a decision to make. Do we enroll our son into public school like any normal, sane person would? Or do we homeschool him like a weirdo? We chose the latter. And every day, I am more affirmed that we made the right choice. As most of you know, this past week was the nation-wide gun control walkout. Students and staff from high school down to kindergarten took the day to protest for stricter gun control policies. Lovely signs included "As a black boy, I just hope that one day I have as many rights as a gun" and "NRA = BLOODSHED." Students that didn't participate were reprimanded. Students who raised signs supporting the Second Amendment had them confiscated. In one case, a teacher was put on leave for questioning the walkout. And in the same week, two students were suspended for visiting a shooting range with their parents, breaking the school's "no guns on or off campus" policy. This isn't the exact reason we decided to homeschool. But it does exemplify the problem. And the problem is this: Public school is no longer neutral ground. As Christians in a secular society, we understand that the public sphere is always a battlefield. And as parents, one of our goals is to train and equip our little sheep to be little soldiers. We don't want them to be swept up and, as Paul says, "tossed to and fro by the waves, carried about by every wind of doctrine, human cunning, and craftiness." We take seriously the call that we are to "bring them up in the discipline and instruction of the Lord." School, of course, is one of the earliest testing grounds of this. It is where they are often first exposed to people of contrasting views. Here they can continue to grow, learn, and be challenged in a relatively controlled, appropriately safe setting. Not so anymore. A kindergartner stepping through the classroom door is stepping into an arena. And if the opposing team were just made of other kindergartners, that would be fine. Good, even. But the problem is that the opposing team consists of kindergartners, coaches, and referees. We're ok with marching our little soldiers into an unfair fight. We're not ok with throwing our little sheep into a pack of wolves. And presenting modern sex education to five-year-olds, which is something schools in our area have begun doing, is the latter. Now, I fully grant that not all teachers are like this. Not all school staff is like this. I know plenty of teachers and administrators who are great and in no way reflect this. Some even see the problem and are endeavoring to be part of the solution. Yes and amen. And I fully grant that not all schools are like this. I'm confident there are schools that have not and will not go this route. I do think that it will get better. Yes and amen. But here in the greater Seattle region, we are under no illusion. We are in a midst of a culture that stands opposed to Christ and His kingdom, and the schools are no exception. And the more we see what qualifies as "normal" in today's society, the more ok we are if our kids turn out a little "weird." In fact, I think we'd prefer it. |
