Why? The best Super Eagles kit at a World Cup was worn by the side that impressed the most since Nigeria qualified for its first World Cup in 1994, while the worst performance in Nigeria’s past five appearances was by the side that many fans believed wore the worst jersey.\nA coincidence? Or is there correlation between kit quality and team performance?\nAfter a Nigerian journalist, Andrew Randa, posted some designs he thought would be great for the Eagles last year, Nike came under intense pressure to come up with a design that would not just be one of Nike’s traditional designs but one created specifically for the Super Eagles. On Wednesday, Nigerian football fans got the result.\nWhile many on various social media platforms were ecstatic about the new designs, some wondered what part of the Nigerian green-white-green flag was represented in the jerseys.\nThe Daily Mirror ranked the 19 jerseys already released for the FIFA 2018 World Cup and Nigeria’s asymmetrical design came out tops.\nThis was against others from England, Russia, France, Portugal, Switzerland, Sweden, Mexico, Uruguay, Argentina, Egypt, Croatia, Brazil, Germany, Peru, Spain, Japan, Belgium, and Colombia. The conclusion was, “And while you’re there, pick up this glorious effort from Nigeria that comes out as a deserving No. 1.\n“It’s incredible, frankly, and is bound to turn us all into Super Eagles in the summer.”\nOut of the 19 kits already revealed, Nike was responsible for six – Nigeria, England, Brazil, Croatia, Portugal, and France.\n![new-kit5.jpg](https://steemitimages.com/DQmafyUr7bozqhyac266HoRE3Ahj8drWnXzn1NKF5uBPUvT/new-kit5.jpg)\nNigeria and World Cup jerseys\nIn 1994, the team led by Stephen Keshi came out in Adidas kits that were unveiled at the Nations Cup, which the Eagles won. That particular jersey was adjudged as the best because it had no predecessor and the design has not been seen since. The Eagles then dazzled just as their jerseys were dazzling.\nIn 1998, it was a muted effort by Nike as the Eagles again qualified for the second round before been roundly beaten by Denmark.\nIn 2002 in the South Korea/Japan World Cup, the Eagles were a pale shadow of themselves and that was appropriately reflected in the Nike kit that was supposedly electric green but was, in fact, green washed so thin you did not know what to call it. That team in the five appearances at the Mundial is the worst till date. They scored just one goal in their three matches and came last in their group.\nIn 2010, the Eagles returned to the World Cup in simple Adidas jerseys and their displays were that – simple. The Eagles could not progress from a group comprising Argentina, Greece and South Korea, as Sani Kaita became the first Super Eagles’ player to be shown a straight red card at the tournament.\nThe late Keshi led the Super Eagles to the 2014 tournament in Brazil and there was some enthusiasm about the Adidas jerseys they sported. And just as the enthusiasm was, the team got to the second round to be eliminated by France.\nAhead of the 2018 Mundial\nOne of the closest people to the team, Tunde Adelakun, wrote on Twitter that the Eagles have to match the jersey quality, which has been rated highly. “@thenff @NGSuperEagles new World Cup kit has been ranked as number one in the power rankings of the 19 kits revealed so far. Impressive. Now we need to match it with results on the pitch.”\nBut Sola Aiyepeku believes it looks like something for kids.\n“I do not like it. Looks razz with too many things and colours on it. Why does Nike always do this? They did the same in 2002 with their lemon green.\n“Now that 2nd jersey looks like ‘Okrika’ [not well made] version of the ’95 Jersey. The 1st one is dark green; but what do I know; we have imbeciles at the helm who know nothing about branding.”\nWhile Dumnodi Okonta of Channels TV said, “Well, I have my reservations because of the Lemon colour.”\nWhatever your reaction to these new jerseys – will it preclude the fact that the Eagles will be as good as these new Nike offerings in Russia?       "body": "They may seem like strange bedfellows to many, but by the end of Sunday’s Grammy telecast, fans of rock music, rap music fans, women and the president – yes, POTUS 45 – all shared a unique bond. They were all snubbed by the 60th Edition of “music’s biggest event.”\nOn a night when diversity, unity, immigration, depression and oppression were all addressed by the celebrities who paraded across the stage to present and accept Grammys recognizing the “best” in last year’s musical achievements, the actual results stunned the many in attendance – and those who watched on TV – in what was reportedly the lowest-rated Grammy awards ever.\n\n![A741070E-EE66-40F4-A73D-2658195B1E74.jpeg](https://steemitimages.com/DQmPdo1FsRLbKXjPy8VYqpZsWgzNgcYGCwfim8XYhmDioBE/A741070E-EE66-40F4-A73D-2658195B1E74.jpeg)\n\nWomen and men both wore white outfits or corsages in honor of the #MeToo and #TimesUp movements in a show of unity against harassment and unequal treatment of women. Obligatory speeches were made and emotional performances given (the best one by pop singer Kesha and a host of other women of her recent top-30 hit, “Praying”) to deliver messages of empowerment in an era when stories emerge almost daily about women’s abuse suffered at the hands of powerful men.\nThe only problem there? The Grammys didn’t walk that talk.\nOnly one woman won in any of the major categories presented on the telecast (pop singer Alessia Cara for Best New Artist), and even that award didn’t seem authentic – Cara had a #1 hit on several Billboard charts as far back as 2015/16 with her début single “Here” and another top ten hit months later. She beat out actual new candidates like 2017 breakout R&B star SZA, whose emergence in the past year would make more sense for “new” artist recognition.\n\n![0533BA45-0372-4898-8F13-9B17E2348D23.jpeg](https://steemitimages.com/DQmUnxtDoYs4Yo8FgdtqBGLLNA1KS5CiJymmhRLLgd2L6Zx/0533BA45-0372-4898-8F13-9B17E2348D23.jpeg)\nSinger lorde\nshown above), was also the only nominee in that category who didn’t perform on the program – a decision by the show’s producers that is getting the flack it so richly deserves.\nWhat’s worse is NARAS President Neil Portnow is now having to walk back his explanation that women need to “step up” their game to better compete in the major categories. As for the show’s decision not to include Lorde, producers \nused the lame excuse that there’s only room for so many artists.\nMaybe that’s why hip-hop performers like omnipresent hype man DJ Khaled and singer Rihanna got to perform “Wild Thoughts” on the same bill that Bruno Mars and the equally ubiquitous rapper Cardi B did their popular ‘90s-themed “Finesse.” Surely one of those could have been swapped with a tune from Lorde’s Best-Album contender.\nAnd speaking of Mars, everyone knows by now about his sweep of the three biggest awards (Best Album, Record and Song), which came at the expense of arguably more deserving – and certainly more critically acclaimed – albums by rappers Kendrick Lamar, JAY-Z and Childish Gambino. It was Lamar’s third loss in the Best Album category in five years, the kind of result that the Grammys have notoriously been rightly criticized for throughout their history. JAY-Z incredibly went 0-for-8 after garnering the most nominations of anyone this year.\n![1ED405B8-D8D5-4BE9-A98B-A07F14227E07.jpeg](https://steemitimages.com/DQmbfcsGsbJ41zqjkFQXUkMKBSukpamVH4nVbjgtPzFLfQ3/1ED405B8-D8D5-4BE9-A98B-A07F14227E07.jpeg)\nRappers JAY-Z and Kendrick Lamar accounted for 15 nominations at this year’s Grammys.\n\nHip-hop fans were understandably pissed off, if not for JAY-Z’s snub, certainly for Lamar’s. Yes, he took home five trophies Sunday night, but four of those were in the niche rap category and one was for best video. Creatively, it’ll be hard for him to top the crowning achievement that was last year’s\nDAMN . Sadly, his due recognition may have to come for a lesser album several years down the road – say, when he’s 50 and all mellowed out. The Grammys certainly have a history of recognizing heritage artists long past their primes.\nAnd speaking of heritage artists, were it not for bands like U2 performing, rock music would have been pretty much non-existent on the Grammy stage. Even popular groups like Imagine Dragons (interestingly nominated in pop categories instead of rock ones) weren’t invited to perform.
