| body | What is eCommerce? eCommerce refers to any form of business transaction conducted online. The most popular example of eCommerce is online shopping, which is defined as buying and selling of goods via the internet on any device. However, eCommerce can also entail other types of activities, such as online auctions, payment gateways, online ticketing, and internet banking. eCommerce is the fastest growing retail market projected to hit $4.135 trillion in sales in 2020. Mobile commerce, or mCommerce, is a rapidly growing new avenue of eCommerce that’s mostly driven by the expanding market and influence of smartphones and millennials’ comfort with shopping online. In 2018, the mCommerce sector enjoyed a 39.1% increase in sales compared to the previous year. eCommerce Business Models eCommerce is typically classified into three different models based on the type of participants involved in the transaction. | body | When Colonel Edwin Drake drilled the first successful oil well in Titusville, Pennsylvania in 1859, few had any idea of how petroleum would change the world. Drake and his backers were looking for a source of kerosene to be used for lighting fuel. For most of the 19th century, gasoline was merely a byproduct of the production of kerosene, with few commercial uses. The remarkable transformation in mobility of people and goods began only after the beginning of the new century. The primary market for oil had begun to disappear when Thomas Edison invented the light bulb and created the electrical generation industry. In 1882, Edison threw a switch to start the first commercial electrical generating plant and, by the turn of the century, there were over 18 million lightbulbs in use in the U.S. alone. The oil industry lost its major market. The invention of the automobile changed all that. At the beginning of 20th century there were about 8,000 registered vehicles, and by 1920 there were 23 million cars. However, it was not clear whether gasoline engines would be used to fuel the automobile. Early models were powered by steam and electricity as well as gasoline; in the early 1900s most were electric. Yet, gasoline-powered engines turned out to be the most practical design because battery-powered engines did not have sufficient range. With the construction of a network of gasoline filling stations, the infrastructure was put in place to ensure a consistent supply of fuel. Therefore, gasoline-powered automobiles captured the market. World War I irrevocably changed the role of petroleum in the world. When the war began, military planning focused on the horse as the primary mode of transportation. It assumed that one horse was needed for every three soldiers, which provided a logistical problem since the horses required ten times as much food. When Britain entered the war, it had only about 800 motor vehicles, most of which were requisitioned from private citizens. By the end of the war, Britain had 56,000 trucks and 36,000 cars. In addition, the U.S. shipped over 50,000 vehicles to Europe and, in one and a half years, built 15,000 planes. Motorized transport began to dramatically change the nature of war. The development of the airplane and the tank, which was first used at the Battle of the Somme in 1918, provided both mobility and power that was unprecedented in the history of warfare. Oil began to provide a critical advantage that changed how nations regarded this natural resource. Previously, oil was seen as a commodity brought to market by a few entrepreneurs; after WWI, it was regarded as a strategic mineral for which supplies had to be ensured. During the war, Britain had converted their ships from coal-burning to oil-powered to give them increased speed and mobility. During this same time, Germany’s submarine attacks in the Atlantic cut off Britain’s oil shipments and nearly brought defeat. After the war, one of the priorities of both Britain and France was to ensure their access to oil, particularly in Mesopotamia, where oil had been discovered in 1908. Division of spheres of interest in that region were heavily influenced by the potential of oil within the region. However, until the 1940s, the United States was the world’s leader in oil production, producing 65 percent of the world’s oil. In 1940, the Middle East accounted for less than 5 percent of total production. This changed dramatically with the discovery of “supergiant” oil fields in Kuwait and Saudi Arabia in the 1930s and 1940s. Throughout the world, a growing reliance on Middle East oil became a serious concern. In the U.S., it was due to the oil shocks of the 1970s. The first shock occurred in 1973 after Egypt and Syria attacked Israel. The U.S. had furnished arms to Israel and the Middle Eastern countries responded by imposing an oil embargo on the U.S., which led to long lines at gasoline stations. The U.S., led by President Gerald Ford, launched a national effort to reduce dependence on Middle Eastern oil through “Project Independence,” a ten-year plan to build 150 coal-fired power plants and 200 nuclear plants, in addition to building synfuel plants. This project was meant to ensure that the U.S. had a domestic supply of critical energy supplies; however, after the oil shortages subsided, so did much of the interest in the new initiatives. The second oil shock occurred during 1978-1979 after the fall of Iran. Panic buying drove up prices and depleted supplies, resulting once again in long lines at gasoline stations. | body | A freelancer or freelance worker, is a term commonly used for a person who is self-employed and is not necessarily committed to a particular employer long-term. Freelance workers are sometimes represented by a company or a temporary agency that resells freelance labor to clients; others work independently or use professional associations or websites to get work. While the term independent contractor would be used in a higher register of English to designate the tax and employment classes of this type of worker, the term "freelancing" is most common in culture and creative industries, and use of this term may indicate participation therein.[ Fields, professions, and industries where freelancing is predominant include: music, writing, acting, computer programming, web design, graphic design, translating and illustrating, film and video production and other forms of piece work which some cultural theorists consider as central to the cognitive cultural economy #Types of work According to the 2012 Freelance Industry Report compiled primarily about North America freelancing, nearly half of freelancers do writing work, with 18% of freelancers listing writing as a primary skill, 10% editing/copy-editing, and 10% as copy-writing. 20% of freelancers listed their primary skills as design. Next on the list was translating (8%), web development (5.5%), and marketing (4%). However the recent report on the freelancing culture has shown tremendous growth in terms of percentage of freelancers and the economy contribution they will be generating. According to a survey recently[when?] conducted by PayPal, 47% of freelancers have grown in terms of income drawn through the freelancing work in 12 months.[citation needed] The freelance field is said[by whom?] to grow to 20$-30$ billion in the next 5–7 years in India and the freelancers in US will comprise 40% (approx.) of the work force at the present growth rate. #Benefits Freelancers have a variety of reasons for freelancing, the perceived benefits differ by gender, industry, and lifestyle. For instance, the 2012 Freelance Industry Report reported that men and women freelance for different reasons. Female survey respondents indicated that they prefer the scheduling freedom and flexibility that freelancing offers, while male survey respondents indicated they freelance to follow or pursue personal passions. Freelancing also enables people to obtain higher levels of employment in isolated communities. Freelancing is also taken up by workers who have been laid-off, who cannot find full-time employment,or for those industries such as journalism which are relying increasingly on contingent labor rather than full-time staff. Freelancers also consist of students trying to make ends meet during the semester. In interviews, and on blogs about freelancing, freelancers list choice and flexibility as a benefit. #Drawbacks Freelancing, like other forms of casual labor, can be precarious work. Websites, books, portals and organizations for freelancers often feature advice on getting and keeping a steady work stream.[citation needed] Beside the lack of job security, many freelancers also report the ongoing hassle of dealing with employers who don't pay on time and the possibility of long periods without work. Additionally, freelancers do not receive employment benefits such as a pension, sick leave, paid holidays, bonuses or health insurance, which can be a serious hardship for freelancers residing in countries such as the US without universal health care. Freelancers often earn less than their employed counterparts. While most freelancers have at least ten years of experience prior to working independently, experienced freelancers do not always earn an income equal to that of full-time employment. Feedback from members suggests that web portals such as Freelancer.com tend to attract low paying clients that, although demanding very high standards, pay ~$10 per hour or less. Low-cost suppliers frequently offer to work at rates as low as $1–$2 per hour. Because most projects require bidding, professionals will not bid because they refuse to work at such rates. This has the effect of reducing the overall quality of the services provided. According to research conducted in 2005 by the Professional Writers Association of Canada on Canadian journalists and editors, there is a wage gap between staff and freelance journalists. While the typical Canadian full-time freelancer is female, between 35-55, holding a college diploma and often a graduate degree, she typically earns about $29,999 Canadian dollars before taxes. Meanwhile, a staff journalist of similar age and experience level working full-time at outlets such as the Ottawa Citizen or Montreal Gazette newspapers, earned at least $63,500 Canadian dollars that year, the top scale rate negotiated by the union, The Newspaper Guild-Communications Workers of America.[20] Given the gendered stratification of journalism, with more women working as freelancers than men, this disparity in income can be interpreted as a form of gender pay gap. The Professional Writers Association of Canada report showed no significant difference between the earnings of male and female freelancers, though part-time freelancers generally earned less than full-time freelancers. Working from home is often cited as an attractive feature of freelancing, yet research suggests working from home introduces new sets of constraints for the process of doing work, particularly for married women with families, who continue to bear the brunt of household chores and child care despite increases in their paid work time. For instance, three years of ethnographic research about teleworkers in Australia conducted by Melissa Gregg, a Principal Engineer and Researcher in Residence for the Intel Science and Technology Center for Social Computing at UC Irvine, raises concerns over how both physical isolation and continuous access enabled with networked digital media puts pressure on homeworkers to demonstrate their commitments through continual responses by email and to conceal their family or home life. #Internet and online marketplaces The Internet has opened up many freelance opportunities, expanded available markets, and has contributed to service sector growth in many economies.Offshore outsourcing, online outsourcing and crowdsourcing are heavily reliant on the Internet to provide economical access to remote workers, and frequently leverage technology to manage workflow to and from the employer. Much computer freelance work is being outsourced to developing countries outside the United States and Europe. Freelance marketplaces provide a marketplace for freelancers and buyers. Service providers or sellers create a profile where they include a description of the services they offer, examples of their work, and, in some cases, information about their rates. Buyers register and complete a basic profile, and then post projects outlining their requirements. Buyers will then bid for these projects on a fixed price or hourly basis. Many of these websites have user review sections that affect the reputation of freelancers who list there, and which may be manipulated. Freelance marketplaces have globalized competition for some jobs, allowing workers in high- and low-income countries to compete with one another.[29] According to a 2016 study by the McKinsey Global Institute, 15% of independent workers used online marketplaces to find work.[30] These marketplaces, including Fiverr and Lyft, have been criticized as exploiting workers |

Many of these websites have user review sections that affect the reputation of freelancers who list there, and which may be manipulated.\n\nFreelance marketplaces have globalized competition for some jobs, allowing workers in high- and low-income countries to compete with one another.[29] According to a 2016 study by the McKinsey Global Institute, 15% of independent workers used online marketplaces to find work.[30]\n\nThese marketplaces, including Fiverr and Lyft, have been criticized as exploiting workers\n",

| body | What gives a person’s life meaning is as unique to that person as their fingerprint. In order to live your own life, you must begin to identify and prioritize the things in your life that are the most meaningful to you. It is essential that you ask yourself if you are truly living the life you want to lead. Are you making your life choices based on your own wants, beliefs, and values? Or are you living your life based on the expectations of those around you and prescriptions you acquired in your past? In other words, whose life are you really living? Finding your own unique path can take time and involve a lot of trial and error. The process of becoming your true self lasts throughout a lifetime. Our personalities, interests and abilities are not set in stone. Humans are adaptable creatures, and we are always capable of change. However, in order to change our lives or ourselves, we have to better understand ourselves first. #Five Steps to Live Your Own Life: 1. Think About What You Really Want in Life For many of us, just knowing what we want in life can be a challenge. However, it is not possible to live your own life on your own terms, unless you define what your terms are. Being in touch with what you want and what matters to you helps you prioritize, develop goals and ultimately get where you want to go. As Dr. Lisa Firestone says, “When you don’t know what you want, you’re like a ship without a rudder.” Once you know what you want, you have a destination, and you can set course in that direction. Discover what you truly want by asking yourself the following questions: What really lights me up? What matters most to me? Allow yourself to think freely, as you answer these questions instead of getting caught up in what you think you should be doing or what others would like for you to do. We often make the mistake of thinking that we are selfish if we spend time contemplating what we want, however this is a fundamental aspect of getting to know ourselves. Asking yourself what your principles are doesn’t mean that you will ignore everyone else’s. On the contrary, deciding what matters to you includes recognizing the people who matter to you and acknowledging that they are a priority in your life and that caring for them is big part of what makes you happy and gives your life meaning. Plus, according to Dr. Lisa Firestone, “You have the most value in the world around you when you find and invest in the gifts that you uniquely have to offer.” Advice such as “follow your passion” may sound cliché, however research has actually proven that people are not only happier when they follow their passions, they are also more likely to excel in their chosen careers and activities. A recent study on the effects of motivation found that the stronger the internal motivation for doing something, rather than the external rewards, the more likely people were to succeed. So, think about what is meaningful to you! 2. Differentiate Yourself We are all born genetically unique individuals. However, much of our identity is created by our early environment; we internalize characteristics of our caretakers and often take on their personalities rather than developing our own. In this sense, we often spend more time reliving the lives of others rather than living our own lives. In his book The Self-Under Siege: A Therapeutic Model for Differentiation, Dr. Robert Firestone writes, “In order for people to live their own lives and fulfill their destinies, they must differentiate from destructive environmental influences.” According to Dr. Robert Firestone a person’s true identity is affected throughout their lives by interpersonal experiences that either damage or support the development of his or her personality. Throughout our development, we adapt ourselves to cope with pain and fears, as they arise. We adapt so that we can deal with our early environment and get our needs met. One way we do this is by incorporating negative aspects of our parents’ or caretakers’ personalities or developing psychological defenses in reaction to their negative traits. In order for us to live our own lives and fulfill our own destinies, we must differentiate ourselves from destructive family and societal influences. Self Under SiegeMost people either take on the value systems and beliefs of the family and culture they grew up in, or they rebel and form defiant attitudes in direct opposition to their family or culture. However, in order to live your own life, it is important to develop your own personal values and beliefs, rather than simply accepting or rejecting the values and beliefs of your early influencers. You should then make an effort to live according to your own principles, which will infuse your life with more meaning. Read About Psychological Differentiation Differentiating from the negative influences and identities from our past allows us to become who we truly are. To the extent that we are able to differentiate, develop our own unique identities and follow our own unique desires, we will be able to live the most fulfilling lives. We must strive to live our own lives rather than the lives prescribed by our parents, our families or our society. 3. Set Goals Once you are in touch with what you want and what your core values are, it is important to set some goals for yourself. What do you need to accomplish to live your own life? It is helpful to write down your goals. Start with just a few, rather than overwhelming yourself with a large list of things that you would like to change. Think about specific actions you can take to achieve your goals. Start small and set waypoints that you can accomplish along the way. These waypoints will make it easier for you to keep yourself accountable and track your progress. For example, if your goal is to write and publish a novel, your first waypoint could be to finish one chapter in the next two weeks. A recent study showed that people were significantly more likely to accomplish their goals if they wrote them down, formulated actions to achieve them and sent weekly progress reports to a friend. To effectively tackle your goals, you may want to use that method. Do you have a friend who could help keep you accountable to your goals? Ask him or her for help. Pursuing goals is an essential aspect of living your own life. Many of us have a tendency to fantasize about achieving our goals rather than taking the actions to achieve them. As Nolan Bushnell said, “Everyone who’s ever taken a shower has had an idea. It’s the person who gets out of the shower, dries off and does something about it who makes a difference.” The actions aren’t always easy, and they often force us outside of our comfort zone, but there is no shortcut to creating a meaningful life. If you want to live your own life, you must be proactive about creating it. 4. Stop Listening to Your Inner Critic As you begin to take actions toward your goals, be aware of the roadblocks that will arise along the way. The first enemy you will encounter is your “critical inner voice.” The critical inner voice is like a nasty coach that lives inside our heads. It consists of negative thoughts, beliefs and attitudes that oppose our best interests and diminish our self-esteem. It is our own worst enemy. This inner critic evaluates our every move, puts us down and undermines our desires with thoughts like: ”You don’t really want that, do you?”; “You’ll never succeed”; “There’s no point in even trying.” It warns us about going after the things we want. The inner critic attempts to keep you feeling “safe” by reinforcing the familiar old identity you grew up with and maintaining your defensive adaptations to life. This inner critic will come up with a long list of reasons why you cannot or should not live your own life. It is essential that you break free from your inner critic and stop listening to its bad advice. Understand Where the Critical Inner Voice Comes From It can be helpful to think of the critical inner voice as the language of the anti-self, the part of a person that is against his or her own self-interest. All people are divided. We are torn between our anti-self, which is self-hating and cynical toward others, suspicious and, at its ultimate end, self-destructive and abusive to others; and our real-self, which, in contrast, is compassionate toward ourselves and others. Our real-self is made up of our own unique wants and desires. It is life-affirming and goal-directed. When you attempt to separate yourself from the critical inner voices and live your own life based on the wants, desires, and goals of your real self, the “voices” may get even louder. This often causes people to feel more anxious when they start to work toward their goals. The inner critic often tries to undermine your efforts by filling your head with self-doubts or by seducing you into procrastination. If you really want to change your life for the better, you must adopt a zero-tolerance policy toward your inner critic. As soon as you notice that you are starting to attack yourself, interrupt that negative thinking immediately. Don’t get caught up evaluating your inner critic’s bad advice, looking for the grain of truth in its vicious criticism. Instead remind yourself that these are just critical inner thoughts, and it is not appropriate or productive to indulge such nasty and taunting attitudes toward yourself. Pay attention to what triggers this negative thinking. Remember, your “voices” can be very subtle and pick up on things that have some truth to them. The inner critic will often narrow in on areas where you have weaknesses. Be wary of thoughts that sound friendly or seductive but are ultimately against your personal goals or your best interest, such as “don’t worry about exercising today. You deserve a break.” Don’t be fooled by your voices—they are never acting in your best interest! 5. Harness Your Personal Power As you overcome your inner critic, you will develop more personal power. Harnessing your personal power is essential if you want to live your own life. “Personal power,” according to Dr. Robert Firestone, “is based on strength, confidence, and competence that individuals gradually acquire in the course of their development.” It is a healthy form of self-assertion that reflects a natural striving for love, success, satisfaction and meaning in one’s life. Personal power is an expression of the real-self, and it is characterized by movement toward self-realization and transcendent goals in life. Dr. Firestone points out that personal power is “an attitude or state of mind.” As such, it is something that we can develop. By conquering our critical inner voices, getting in touch with our own unique desires and pursuing our goals, we cultivate our personal power. There is no greater challenge and no greater reward than to live your own life. As Natalie Babbitt said, “Do not fear death, but rather the unlived life. You don’t have to live forever. You just have to live.” |

If you want to live your own life, you must be proactive about creating it.\n4. Stop Listening to Your Inner Critic\nAs you begin to take actions toward your goals, be aware of the roadblocks that will arise along the way. The first enemy you will encounter is your “critical inner voice.” The critical inner voice is like a nasty coach that lives inside our heads. It consists of negative thoughts, beliefs and attitudes that oppose our best interests and diminish our self-esteem. It is our own worst enemy.\nThis inner critic evaluates our every move, puts us down and undermines our desires with thoughts like: ”You don’t really want that, do you?”; “You’ll never succeed”; “There’s no point in even trying.” It warns us about going after the things we want. The inner critic attempts to keep you feeling “safe” by reinforcing the familiar old identity you grew up with and maintaining your defensive adaptations to life. This inner critic will come up with a long list of reasons why you cannot or should not live your own life. It is essential that you break free from your inner critic and stop listening to its bad advice.\nUnderstand Where the Critical Inner Voice Comes From\nIt can be helpful to think of the critical inner voice as the language of the anti-self, the part of a person that is against his or her own self-interest. The inner critic often tries to undermine your efforts by filling your head with self-doubts or by seducing you into procrastination.\nIf you really want to change your life for the better, you must adopt a zero-tolerance policy toward your inner critic. You deserve a break.” Don’t be fooled by your voices—they are never acting in your best interest!\n5. Harness Your Personal Power\nAs you overcome your inner critic, you will develop more personal power. Personal power is an expression of the real-self, and it is characterized by movement toward self-realization and transcendent goals in life.\nDr. Firestone points out that personal power is “an attitude or state of mind.” As such, it is something that we can develop. By conquering our critical inner voices, getting in touch with our own unique desires and pursuing our goals, we cultivate our personal power.\n\nThere is no greater challenge and no greater reward than to live your own life. As Natalie Babbitt said, “Do not fear death, but rather the unlived life. You don’t have to live forever. You just have to live.”",

| body | # Many new investors don't understand that saving money and investing money are entirely different things. They have different purposes, and play different roles, in your financial strategy and your balance sheet. Making sure you are clear on this fundamental concept before you begin your journey to building wealth and finding financial independence is vital because it can save you from a lot of heartache and stress. I've witnessed firsthand, and spoken with many individuals, who lost everything despite having wonderful portfolios because they didn't appreciate the role of cash in their portfolio. Cash deserves respect. The goal of cash is not always to generate a return for you. Perhaps the best place to start would be to spell out the differences between saving and investing for you, defining both concepts. #What Is the Definition of Saving Money? Saving money is the process of putting cold, hard cash aside and parking it in extremely safe, and liquid (meaning they can be sold or accessed in a very short amount of time, at most a few days) securities of accounts. This can include checking accounts and savings accounts secured by the FDIC. This can include United States Treasury bills. This can include money market accounts (but not always money market funds as you need to look at the holdings and structure closely). Above all, cash reserves must be there when you reach for them; available to grab, take hold of, and deploy immediately with minimal delay no matter what is happening around you. Many famous wealthy investors, as well as older investors who lived through the Great Depression, actually advocate keeping a lot of cash hidden on hand somewhere that only you know about even if it involves a major loss. It wasn't widely reported at the time but during the 2008-2009 meltdown, some hedge fund managers were reportedly sending their spouses to get as much cash as they could out of ATMs because they believed the entire economy was going to collapse and there wouldn't be any access to greenbacks for awhile. #What Is the Definition of Investing Money? Investing money is the process of using your money, or capital, to buy an asset that you think has a good probability of generating a safe and acceptable rate of return over time, making you wealthier even if it means suffering volatility, perhaps even for years. True investments are backed by some sort of margin of safety, often in the form of assets or owner earnings. As you learned in How To Start Investing, the best investments tend to be so-called productive assets such as stocks, bonds, and real estate. #How Much Should I Save Versus How Much Should I Invest? Saving money should almost always come before investing money. Think of it as the foundation upon which your financial house is built. The reason is simple. Unless you inherit a large amount of wealth, it is your savings that will provide you with the capital to feed your investments. If times get tough and you require cash, you'll likely be selling out your investments at the worst possible time. That is not a recipe for getting rich. There are two primary types of savings programs you should include in your life. They are: 1- As a general rule, your savings should be sufficient to cover all of your personal expenses, including your mortgage, loan payments, insurance costs, utility bills, food, and clothing expenses for at least six months. That way, if you lose your job, you’ll be able to have sufficient time to adjust your life without the extreme pressure that comes from living paycheck to paycheck. 2- Any specific purpose in your life that will require a large amount of cash in five years or less should be savings-driven, not investment-driven. The stock market in the short-run can be extremely volatile, losing more than 50 percent of its value in a single year. Purchasing a home is a great example as we discussed in Best Places To Invest Your Down Payment Money. Only after that these things are in place, and you have health insurance, should you begin investing (this really is vital — for more information on the reasons, read Investing in Health Insurance – One of the First Lines of Defense for Your Portfolio. The only possible exception is putting money into a 401(k) plan at work if your company matches your contributions. That’s because not only will you get a substantial tax break for putting money into your retirement account, but the matching funds basically represent free cash that is being handed to you on a silver tray and there are material bankruptcy protections in place for assets held within such an account should you be wiped out entirely.) More Information About Saving Money For more information about how you can begin saving money, read The Complete Beginner's Guide to Saving Money. It is filled with articles, resources, essays, and lessons about how to save money, how to invest money, and how to get started on the road to wealth. It may seem daunting now, but every successful self-made person had to begin by earning money, spending less than they earned, taking those savings, and putting them to work in projects that threw off dividends, interest, and rents. They are no better than you are. If you learn the same thing, and can act as rationally so as to manage your money with discipline, you can enjoy the rewards of success, just as they did. In the end, saving money comes down to simple math. It really is as fundamental as 2+2=4. |
