| title | Chapter 2: Dynamics of groupism and the idea of friendship |
| body | Today, before I put forth my opinions on being used by friends, let us try and remember the times we spent helping others in friendship. Wait! Before you can recollect it all try and remember the one that is the most fresh in your mind. Now did you analyse why it is still fresh in your mind? Does some emotion surge to your head on remembering that one incident? Did you analyse why that particular incident affects you the most? Would you say that incident has “changed your life”? Did the incident change your ideals on friendship? The emotion you could possibly feel right now are either angst, nostalgia or jealousy. Did you realize that you remember them all from negative emotions? One of the possible reasons it is still biting your back and pricking your side is that you felt being “used”. But do you remember the times you have used your friends? Let’s discuss this system of unidirectional regret in friendship. Let us discuss a bilateral friendship from a third person’s perspective involving two hypothetical friends “Ace” and “Max” with the purpose of analysing “use”. Ace needs help from Max. Max provides help. Keeping an emotional indifference to the analytical approach, Ace creates the demand and Max provides the supply and this is done on an unspoken agreement clause of “friendship” where neither Ace nor Max decide on a descriptive “mutual beneficiary terms”. Please note that not all friendships are like this and hence because of an unspoken “mutual beneficiary terms” they work in good mental sync and tag their relationship as “close friends or best friends”. In simple words, the one that “has your back no matter what” is always going to be closer to you and if this happens to be bidirectional then there is nothing better. Now going back to Ace and Max, lets say Ace always creates the demand and Max always provides the supply, then the friendship seems to benefit Ace rather than Max. Eventually, Max will find a similar beneficial relationship with someone else say, Jake. So, Max would feel being “used” by Ace while he gets to “use” Jake. But when he uses Jake it is not that obvious to Max. This is obviously assuming none of them are capable of being close friends. Sometimes, even among close friends this balance of usages tilts to one person and that is normally when things get messy. Bring in ego into this cocktail of usage among friends and this extrapolates to a level only possibly subsided with compromise. This is the worst case scenario of course. So, In reality if as normal humans we try to maintain this equation of usage, instead of creating a rift people come close together. Now what about the possibility of a friendship where the people involved never use each other. Would these people be closer to each other because they would never use each other and hence have no problems within themselves? To understand this situation let us consider the state of “strangers”. Two strangers end up friends possibly because of commonalities between each other. But if that was the factor of being close friends then everyone with common interests would be on the same level of friendship and the more things are in common the closer the friendship is supposed to be. But in reality this is not the case. Friends around us may have some coincidental commonalities. What then is the factor for closeness? Lets take two independent friendships. Friends Paul and Marshall are friends who live close by, talk everyday, hangout together at the same sports bar. They are excellent company for each other. But they never ask favour from each other. They have never “used” each other. Friends Sam and Dean are friends who also live close by, talk everyday, hangout together at the same sports bar. But apart from being excellent company they create demand and supply in a perfect balance. They use each other with perfect balance. Both the pairs have been with each other over the same period of time. Now let us consider the situation where all the four friends have to part ways. Which pair do you think will miss each other the most? The obvious answer to that would be Sam and Dean. So the “usage” of friendship does not seem so wrong after all as long as it is balanced. Have you ever thought about the possibility of any form of society having a “friendship” factor? Humans are not the only social creatures on this planet. But why is friendship unique to us? Did we evolve into a society where friendship was meant to be used in the ideal balanced manner? I sure hope to learn more on this myself from science and it’s never-ending progress and you will join me on this journey to analyse the human condition and understand the metaphorical “heart” so to speak and listen to the voice in your head. |

| title | Chapter 1: Dynamics of groupism and the idea of friendship |
| body | Friendship is a topic deeply discussed and epitomized in several stories and songs. It was romanticized by the best literature. It was twisted and contorted in many ideals and will forever remain a topic of much talk and debate. Friendship and it’s unspoken norms that have evolved over so many generation. The equations that complicate it are several and experience teaches different lessons about friend to different people. But why even in a singular society does these norms still vary? Why does best of friends sometimes drift away? Why do complete strangers at certain time end up being inseparable friends? What level of formality is expected even among best friends? Why do expectation from friends vary so widely even among a close group of friends? Everyone has friends who like to hang around during a certain time. Obviously there are different groups of friends. The childhood friends, the party friends, the embarrassing friends, the study friends, the work place friends, the coincidental friends, so on and so forth. The reason we have so many opinions about friendship is because no two people have the same brain ( oh hello Capt. Obvious!), no two people get influenced by people the same way and no two people have the same relationship with their friends in the same manner. That also means what your friend expects from you may not be what you expect from him/her. Now lets think about why people who were best friends drift apart so far that sometimes that is irreparable. The reason is “expectation”. No matter how open-heartedly we accept someone as a friend, we always expect something in return. I mentioned “something” here because it would not be right for me to substitute that “something” with anything else. For everyone that “something” is different, even between best friends. The people who seem to like everything about you are just pretentious and fake. I have noticed this especially among girls though. They may hate each other deep inside, but because they need each other for a reason (god knows what) they will behave like best of friends. So the abrasive ones and the glib ones get mixed up by friends very often this way. The potent gullible person mistakes glibness for sincerity and abrasiveness for for a daft. So where does friendship end up in this pot of fool’s gold? Friendship as I mentioned has been romanticized and dissected to such an extent that sometimes doing things for someone to gain trust and love borders on the line of skulduggery for the so called realistic people and serenades the thoughts of pompous glory of friendship for the idealistic people. It is this difference in ideals that people find someone harsh and rude or weird and fake. Bruno Mars says he can take a grenade for you. So how far are you willing to compromise for friendship? Those vary too. There are the shrewd and glib ones that have too many friends to handle and don’t really mind loosing a few but will hug you and cry their hearts out when going apart but you can spot their behaviour straight away. There are the silent ones who feel hurt but don’t say it out loud because of misplaced ego and hence get misjudged. Then there are the brooding ones who just keep to themselves and only think of themselves while loosing that special someone “Oh! I will be all alone without you!” and other melodramatic piece of unmentionable words. But why we still stick together irrespective of so many differences and differences in opinions? Different people have different reasons here again. The shrewd keep their friends close because they may need them in the future. The shy ones keep their friends close because they are not sure they can make any new friends with this level of comfort soon. The extroverts keep their friends because they are possessive and hate loosing someone, close or otherwise. The group lives on until the magnets holding the group keep trying to keep people together and make them realize why they are together in the first place in either straightforward or subtle manner. |
