| title | What Is The Non-Aggression Principle? |
| body | **“The direct use of force is such a poor solution to any problem, it is generally employed only by small children and large nations.”** -David Friedman- Don’t hurt people and don’t take their stuff. It’s a simple rule we all live by- with one big exception. From a young age, we are taught not to hit. We are taught not to take other kid’s toys without asking. Parents and teachers spend a lot of time and energy teaching kids to respect other people and their property. These simple rules can be boiled down to what we libertarians call the non-aggression principle. According to this principle, it’s never justified to initiate force against someone else or their property. Self-defense is a justified response to violence that has either already been initiated or is imminent. Simply put, each of us has the liberty to do what we wish as long as we do not infringe upon the equal liberties of any other person. Although this seems to be an incredibly simple idea around which any society would wish to build around, it is often difficult for people to fully and actively accept. We live in a world where no one thinks it’s ok to aggress on another person’s rights to life, liberty or property. But we make a huge exception if that person happens to have a certain government office or is wearing a special badge. I am not allowed to coerce my neighbor into giving me a portion of his paycheck each month, no matter what good I intend to do with it, yet we accept the non-existent right of someone else to do the same simply because they have a badge that says IRS. I do not have the right to break down my neighbor’s door, shoot his dog and lock him up in a cage for smoking a plant, but if someone with a DEA badge does it, it is considered legal and even good. If I don’t like my neighbor growing vegetables in a planter box in her front yard, I can’t force her to get rid of it, but I can lobby for anti-gardening zoning laws so that men with badges will violate her tomatoes for me. If government derives its powers from the consent of the governed, but I don’t have the right to tax or trespass, where does the power of the badge come from? You cannot delegate a right you do not have. I have the right to self defense, and so I can delegate it to someone to defend me. I do not have the right to withhold a portion of my neighbor’s paycheck, so I cannot delegate the job to the IRS. At a fundamental level, people believe that government acts as a protector, an entity to which we have delegated our right of self-defense in order to free up our time so that we don’t have to sit on our front porch all day with a shotgun just to keep our property safe. But government certainly doesn’t limit itself to protecting us against the aggression of others. Instead, it commits the very aggression it claims to protect us from. You have been conditioned to believe that this is not only acceptable, but inevitable- provided the aggressor is wearing the appropriate badge. The gov’t officials should live by the same rules that they learned in Kindergarten. Don’t hurt people and don’t take their stuff. |

| title | War Is A Racket |
| body | War sucks. It's not noble so let's stop pretending otherwise. Most Americans view war as necessary. But beyond that, many Americans look at war as something noble and those who fight, at least on our side, are courageous and valiant warriors worthy of the deepest respect and the highest veneration. Many think that America fights wars to topple dictators, to free people from repressive rule, and through war true American heroes are born. But is this view of war really accurate? Does America go to war for virtuous purposes? Here’s the backstory you’re not being told. Major General Smedley Butler who at the time of his death was the most decorated marine in US history described war as nothing more than a racket. He said that war is the oldest, most profitable and most vicious racket in history. **It is the only racket in which profits are counted in dollars and the losses are counted in lives.** This sort of definition flies in the face of the common belief of the average American. Money and power doesn’t drive America to war, right? Wrong. According to tax records, over 21,000 millionaires and billionaires were made in the United States during World War 1. But how many of them fired a shot or dug a trench? How many of them experienced hunger in a rat-infested dug-out? How many spent sleepless nights, ducking shells and shrapnel and machine gun bullets? How many of them paid for their newly minted fortunes with their lives? Out of war, huge fortunes are made. But how is the cost for these fortunes paid? The price is paid with mangled bodies and shattered minds. It is paid with economic instability and back-breaking taxation for generations. But most of all it is paid for with broken hearts, broken homes and freshly dug graves. Henry Kissinger who has arguable been the single, most influential person in creating America’s current foreign policy said that *“Military men are just dumb, stupid animals to be used as pawns in foreign policy.”* America’s founders warned incessantly about the dangers of always having a standing army and in meddling in the affairs of other countries. James Madison said that “a standing military force... will not long be a safe companion to liberty and that no nation can preserve its freedom in the midst of continual warfare.” And yet, The United States has over 800 military bases scattered around the world and spends more on its military than any other country. In fact, the US spends more on its military than the next highest eight countries combined. Like any racket, War needs people to participate in order to generate profits for the racketeers. In the last ten years alone, more than $16 billion has been spent just in pro-military marketing and advertisements. It is unfortunate that those who speak out against war are ridiculed and labeled as unpatriotic cowards who hate America and refuse to “support the troops.” In 1967, Muhammad Ali was sentenced to five years in prison for his refusal to be inducted into the armed forces. He said *“My conscience won’t let me go shoot my brother… or some poor hungry people in the mud for big powerful America. And shoot them for what? They never lynched me, they didn’t put no dogs on me, they didn’t rob me of my nationality, rape and kill my mother and father. Shoot them for what? How can I shoot them poor people? Just take me to jail.”* In 2003, with 9/11 fresh in their minds, Americans were once again duped into joining yet another war. Built on a lie, the Iraq War has cost over $2 trillion, 4500 American lives and conservative estimates put the non-combatant, civilian body count at over 500,000, many other estimates put it at over a million, most of those being women and children. And for what? Money. Fortunes have been made and companies who provide weapons, planes, ships and vehicles to the military are larger and more profitable than ever. Throughout history, hundreds of millions of people have been killed by poor men who have been conscripted to fight in the wars of rich men whose appetites for money and power could only be appeased through death and destruction. While brave men and women may believe that they are sacrificing their lives for American ideals and that they are liberating captives abroad and preserving our freedoms at home, **we must realize that those ideals are all-too-often manipulated for political propaganda, for the machine of war, for corporate interests whose patriotism and virtue are only as deep as the dollar bill that they’re selling the lives of our brave children to gain.** War rarely, if ever, solves problems but war will continue to be rationalized and propagated so long as there is money to be made by those in power. |

| title | The Broken Window Fallacy |
| body | Many people today, including at least one well-known, Nobel Prize-Winning Economist, have consistently been duped by one particular logical fallacy that has plagued economics for a very long time and is very widely prevalent today. In an essay published in 1850, French economist Frederic Bastiat illustrated this logical blunder in a parable known as the Broken Window Fallacy. Imagine a small bakery in your town or city. One morning, some vandal (let’s say, Antifa member?) throws a rock through the Bakery’s front window and runs off. Soon a small crowd begins to gather, and although things don’t seem too great for the Baker, the crowd understands that the broken window will create a job for a window-maker. They don’t have long to wait and a window-maker shows up within the hour with a new window. The window is quickly replaced and the Baker pays the window-maker $300. The onlookers see the new window and they see the $300 that the Baker paid the window-maker. They know that the window-maker will use the $300 to buy goods and services from other businesses, thereby creating more jobs and prosperity for everyone! This is the error in logic that so many people today still fall victim to. It is true that the broken window did create a job for the glass-maker. Everyone can easily see that. But what they don’t see is that the Baker no longer has the $300 that he was going to spend on a new, tailored suit later that day. The glass-maker’s gain of business is also the loss of the tailor’s business so no new employment has been created. If we consider the Baker to be a member of the community, then we can see that if the window had not been broken, the community would have had both a window and a new suit, but because of the broken window, the community will have to settle for just a window and no suit. The community is one suit poorer than it would have been. Too many people today see disaster and destruction and focus only on the glass-makers of the world and forget about the tailors. When a window breaks, they see a window-maker get a job, but they fail to see the tailor lose his job. Because of this fallacy, many people still, to this day, believe that false myth that the Great Depression of the 1930’s was ended by WWII. They actually believe that mining a bunch of metals out of the ground and turning them into airplanes, tanks, bombs and bullets, transporting them to the other side of the world and then blowing them up, somehow, magically, pulled America out of the Great Depression. People who believe this are falling for the Broken Window Fallacy. They can easily see the things being destroyed and people dying and they can also easily see the jobs that are created by this destruction. They falsely believe that wars create prosperity, which is utterly ridiculous. Some people even think that terrorist attacks and hurricanes are actually blessings in disguise that help boost economic growth. After the terrorist attacks on 9/11, Paul Krugman said that: In 2005, Professor of economics Doug Woodward extolled the economic miracle of hurricane Katrina: We will doubtless see more and more people enthusiastically praising the economic benefits of terrorist attacks, earthquakes, hurricanes and wars. Don’t be fooled. Destruction is the opposite of prosperity. And that’s the story of the Broken Window. |
