The interviewer was Tatjana, and we'll begin with her introduction.</em></p>\n<p>The Darknet is a fascinating topic for me, ever since it started to shape my life years ago. These days it seems that it is becoming a buzzword, along with “cryptoanarchy.” For this reason I thought it would be interesting to sit down with two well-known thinkers from the scene (and more importantly, doers) and discuss these topics with them. To keep it in style, the interview was conducted on the oldest darknet IRC server, home of both Frank Braun and Smuggler.</p>\n<p><strong>Tatjana Adamov:</strong> Smuggler, your “Project of Cryptoanarchy” talk at HCPP18 was one of the most discussed talks that year. It sparked great interest, and you were asked to give it again at the opening of Paralelna Polis in Bratislava. What made you give that talk and what was your goal?</p>\n<p><strong>Smuggler:</strong> I gave the talk because I had the feeling that cryptoanarchy had become a brand, a word without meaning. That there's too little thought about the core ideas that make cryptoanarchy so interesting, at least for me. That so many different things are all put into the cryptoanarchy label, even if they conflict with each other. I just wanted to go back to why cryptoanarchism is about cryptography and anarchism, and how the two relate.</p>\n<p><strong>Tatjana Adamov:</strong> You emphasized social and psychological aspects. Can you elaborate why you don't mention technical aspects?</p>\n<p><strong>Smuggler:</strong> <a href=\"https://www.freemansperspective.com/how-cryptoanarchy-saved-the-world/\">Darknet technology</a> is an enabler for human interaction. It allows human interaction to take a different form from what we are used to from the physical world. Anonymity changes things. It changes what you learn about people, how you interact with them, and also how you look at yourself. The fascinating and challenging aspect is when communities and societies are built around anonymity. That is where things get exciting for me. You'll meet interesting minds and characters that are unusually open, people you can connect to and enjoy interacting with. Because the fear of shame and punishment is reduced – everybody is anonymous after all. No attribution!</p>\n<p>The width of characters in anonymous communities is thus very interesting. You can witness people going from being copycats of social models in meatspace to people experimenting with becoming themselves. They become more true, for good and worse. Of course that leads to extremes sticking out. The real beauty, however, is all those that are between the extremes, that are just as human as you are, everybody shedding social expectations that have no meaning in anonymous communities.</p>\n<p><strong>Tatjana Adamov:</strong> Frank, you gave two interesting talks criticizing technology. One was at HCPP17 and the other was at the opening of Paralelna Polis in Bratislava. I personally find it important that even in a technocentric society, we criticize the technology we build, so I found your two talks very important. The question is: Do you think everything produced by people claiming to be cryptoanarchists is good?</p>\n<p><strong>Frank Braun:</strong> Of course not everything produced by somebody claiming to follow a certain philosophy is good. I think every new technology has to be evaluated for its merits, independently of the person or entity producing it.</p>\n<p>Does this technology bring out the best in humans, or does it make us more machine-like? Some technologies can be clearly categorized into good or bad, but for others it depends more on what you use it for. (The kitchen knife example comes to mind.)</p>\n<p><strong>Tatjana Adamov:</strong> Wouldn't you say it's ironic that cryptoanarchist ideas seem totalitarian, when at the same time their proponents claim to fight for liberty and freedom?</p>\n<p><strong>Frank Braun:</strong> In my view, “cryptoanarchy” was always about anarchy (“no ruler”) by means of cryptography. Very important here are anonymous communication and payment methods, because these technologies strike at the root of the repression of what in my view are fundamental human rights: freedom of speech and freedom of transaction. Cryptoanarchy is about providing more freedom for the people who want it, <em>without</em> interfering with the lives of others.</p>\n<p>Devising anonymized means to kill people for a “good cause” (assassination markets) is not <a href=\"https://www.freemansperspective.com/silk-road-died-bitcoin-crashed/\">cryptoanarchy</a>; it is just plain evil. Using technological tools to start a revolution is not cryptoanarchy either; it is the imposition of a new method of rulership on a ruled population.</p>\n<p>Revolutions, with the help of technology or not, have two big problems:</p>\n<p>The new ruling class coming into power after a revolution is usually worse than the one it replaces. It seems to be impossible to create a “better” system when you start with ethically dubious means (a revolution implies that).</p>\n<p>And even more importantly, what if the population doesn't want a revolution? Who gives you the right to change their system by force?</p>\n<p>Cryptoanarchy is about creating a <em>parallel</em> alternative that does not destroy the surrounding power structure and tries to live in harmony with it. There are many examples of this (ethnic minorities with their own communities, legal structures, business frameworks, etc.). Cryptoanarchy simply brings this concept into the technological sphere, although it also has a physical aspect to it.</p>\n<p><strong>Tatjana Adamov:</strong> Why do you think people are reluctant to take the approach of parallel systems and would rather support something more radical – for example, Amir Taaki's Academy?</p>\n<p><strong>Frank Braun:</strong> I think a destructive approach (revolution) is often more appealing than a constructive one. A destructive approach requires only an enemy; a constructive approach requires a vision of something “better.” And even if you have a vision, it is not clear that it is really better until you've implemented it. Even less clear is the question of whether it's better for your neighbor as well.</p>\n<p>That's why it is better to try alternative solutions in parallel to the existing ones and find out if they really are better. This also prevents a monoculture.</p>\n<p><strong>Smuggler:</strong> I would add the issue of impatience. People feel oppressed and powerless in the face of the systems they live in. This leads to a wrong conclusion: that the pain will go away if the system is brought down. But that is not the case. You have to have something in its place. That something, a new way of doing things, has to be built first, with all its tedious aspects. It requires building social, cultural, and legal frameworks, none of which can be created by fiat but have to be discovered and constructed by a community of people, a society. Otherwise, after revolution, you end up with nothing at all, except for smoldering ruins.</p>\n<p>However, the appeal for more radical approaches is clear. It gives people purpose, in a world and time where many don't see a clear purpose for their lives. However, if that sense of purpose isn't constructive or realistic, it can produce negative consequences. People cling to purposes they shouldn't and become manipulatable by their leaders.</p>\n<p>A friend of mine, Paul Rosenberg, once asked me a question that I think applies here: “What do you envision you will do after the revolution?” That is a really good question, and I think one should really consider the answer. When that answer is found, I think one has found what one should do instead of a revolution. If what keeps you from accomplishing your dreams needs to be overturned by revolutionary means, then the most radical thing you can do is start living it now. Otherwise you end up being a revolutionary for revolution's sake, which is a dangerous delusion.</p>\n<p>And what happens if the system you oppose doesn't break down on its own? Will you take unethical steps to quicken its demise, without considering the cost to those on the receiving end? Impatience, wrongly assigned life purpose, and lack of vision for the “after” have led too many people to do horrific things.</p>\n<p><strong>Tatjana Adamov:</strong> I really hope that the discussion doesn't end here. Do you have any final words?</p>\n<p><strong>Frank Braun: </strong>Keep in mind that the world is not static. People you don't like can be very smart. For every action there is a reaction, but sometimes the reaction is delayed.</p>\n<p><strong>Smuggler:</strong> We're on a path of discovery. Discovery requires venturing into the unknown, with friends on your side and a clear radar for dangers and opportunities.       "body": "https://www.freemansperspective.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/11/doers.jpg\n<p>There's a memorable line in the New Testament that adjures the readers to be “doers of the word and not hearers only.” And that's what I'm urging today. But this isn't about the Bible; this is about whatever you believe.</p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">If you're a libertarian, <em>be</em> a libertarian.</p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">If you're an objectivist, <em>be</em> an objectivist.</p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">If you're a voluntaryist, <em>be</em> a voluntaryist.</p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">If you're a Christian, <em>be</em> a Christian.</p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">If you're a Jew, <em>be</em> a Jew.</p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">And so on.</p>\n<p>Whatever you are and want to be, don't be it halfway. Be it authentically. And if you haven't enough commitment to act accordingly, don't pretend to be it; rather, wait until the commitment builds or you decide to move on to better ideas.</p>\n<p>I always thought it was unfortunate that people automatically follow the religion of their parents, because they tend to be lackadaisical about what they believe. They're cheating themselves.</p>\n<p>So, if you believe something… whatever it is… believe it for real or let it go.</p>\n<p>Even if you were determined to be something I'd recommend against, I'd still probably tell you to be that thing as fully as possible and to learn the truth of it. (Not violent or destructive things, obviously.)</p>\n<h3><strong>And “Be It” Means…</strong></h3>\n<p>“Being it” means that you go back to your books, <a href=\"https://www.freemansperspective.com/humanity-has-been-cut-off-from-its-future/\">redefine your principles</a>, and recommit yourself to them. Then – and this is by far the most essential point – start <strong><em>doing</em></strong> them. You must act.</p>\n<p>And get this:</p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">Waiting for the right time is a cop-out.</p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">Waiting for the right leader is a cop-out.</p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">Planning is a cop-out.</p>\n<p>There's no reason whatsoever to start your action with a giant plan for humanity. Those never work anyway. Talk to your friends; learn to love strangers and talk to them… not to convert them to your doctrine, but to add something to them. If your beliefs are really that good, you will certainly have contributions to make.</p>\n<p>Please understand that if you don't act on them, you're negating both your beliefs and your words. Because if you won't act on it, you don't really believe it. And to wait is to petrify. Either your actions support your words or your actions negate your words.</p>\n<p>One of my favorite places on the darknet has for its motto, “We're not waiting for someone else to rise up.” That statement is powerful, profound, and cuts through one of the biggest scams going: the belief that if we can just talk well enough, someone else will jump up and do the dirty work.</p>\n<p>Acting is not a second stage, acting is the essential stage. Until you act, you'll never fully upgrade yourself, and you'll never really change the world. There is no substitute.</p>\n<h3><strong>The Deep Reason It Matters</strong></h3>\n<p>“Doing” matters for all kinds of reasons, but one of the biggest is very simple:</p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">Once you begin acting – really acting – on what you see as true, you'll start developing faith in yourself… deep faith. And you'll never get it any other way.</p>\n<p>Most of us see people who have faith in themselves, and we envy them. Or we convince ourselves that they're frauds… that it's all an act. (And sometimes it <em>is</em> an act, as when it's done to impress.)</p>\n<p>Still, we recognize that faith in oneself is the right way to live, a better way to live. We just tell ourselves that it isn't really possible.</p>\n<p>But I'm telling you it <strong><em>is</em></strong> possible to have faith in yourself, and that it's a wonderful thing.</p>\n<p>That doesn't mean you'll never change your opinions – you'll still do that, and more so – but you'll know you are true to yourself. You'll know that you are honest not just in your mind but in your deepest parts.</p>\n<p>You can't hide from yourself, and if you're not true to yourself, you'll carry inner conflicts all your life. No matter how well you hide your motives, no matter how well you can justify them, your inner person – your subconscious mind, your soul, or whatever we call it – has an unobstructed view, and it knows better. A large percentage of the problems people endure are direct outgrowths of such conflicts.</p>\n<p>But if your inner parts see that you're being honest with yourself, a virtuous cycle starts within you and may continue for the rest of your life, cleaning you and making you more satisfied from the inside out.</p>\n<h3><strong>But t</strong><strong>he World Doesn't Want You to Act</strong></h3>\n<p>The world in general won't like this. (Though some individuals will appreciate your action.)</p>\n<p>The most respected things on this planet are hierarchies, and those can operate only because millions of individuals bow their wills to them. And so, independent action on your part will always tend to offend both hierarchies and the people who are emotionally tied to them. Unfettered individual will threatens such people and structures.</p>\n<p>And so you're left with a choice: You can be what you think you should be, becoming deeply and profoundly pleased with yourself. Or you can live a life of obedience to mere structures, serving them and wearing yourself down in the process, always carrying nagging questions about what might have been.</p>\n<p>The difference between these two lives is <strong><em>doing</em></strong>. We <em>will</em> evolve freely, unburdened by an unfortunate past. This <em>will</em> happen, and today I'm going to tell you why.</p>\n<p>But more than that, I want you to understand that we <em>deserve</em> to win, and that the future – the world of our children, grandchildren, and so on – very much needs us to win. Our culture stands for – and supports in action – the things that make life thrive on Earth.</p>\n<p>Let me make this point very clear:</p>\n<p><a href=\"https://www.freemansperspective.com/dissipation-moral-energies/\">We believe in the Golden Rule</a>… as in <em>actually</em> believe in it, all the time. Our culture takes it seriously and acts like it's the only healthy way to live.</p>\n<p>The easiest and most gutless life is to follow the crowd. What makes the world better, on the other hand, is to live by what's right. Making unpopular choices – developing and trading crypto, homeschooling your children, ignoring brain-locked regulators, pursuing unapproved cures, changing religions where it's forbidden, pursuing what is disliked by the powers that be – these things require strength of character and dedication to real principles.</p>\n<p>Regardless of our occasional stupidities and errors, our way of life clearly deserves to win.</p>\n<h3><strong>How We'll Win</strong></h3>\n<p>“To change something,” said Buckminster Fuller, “build a new model and make the old obsolete.” And we've been building a new model considerably more than we may realize.</p>\n<p>A new model is precisely how the personal computer came to be and how the Internet came to be. Regardless that computers and the Internet have been recaptured by the status quo, the model remains and has also spawned <a href=\"https://www.freemansperspective.com/tag/encryption/\">encryption</a> and Bitcoin, technologies that are ephemeral and a lot harder to conquer.</p>\n<p>Moreover, the cryptosphere is growing tremendously. When I started pursuing such things back in the 1990s, there were very few of us, and far between. Now I run into crypto advocates in grocery stores, not to mention in general business circles.</p>\n<p>Likewise there are dozens of VPN providers these days. When we started <a href=\"https://secure.cryptohippie.com/\" target=\"_blank\">Cryptohippie</a>, few people outside of technical circles had any idea of what we were selling.</p>\n<p>Furthermore, there are tens of thousands of people working to develop, improve, and spread <a href=\"https://www.freemansperspective.com/tag/cryptocurrency/\">cryptocurrencies</a> every day, often at their own expense and with considerable uncertainty. Because they believe in them. Because they believe they're building a better world.</p>\n<p>Homeschooling makes another fine example. When I started my involvement, parents had recently been arrested for homeschooling in the US. We had to get busy supporting a legal defense fund. Now there are a few million homeschooled kids in the US alone, and everyone knows that homeschooling produces excellent results.</p>\n<p>We'll win by doing these things, followed by others like them. Little by little, step by step, planting seed after seed, we're moving toward our goal faster than we've appreciated.</p>\n<p>Once human action of these types account for enough of our activities, it'll be almost unstoppable, and the legacy system will begin shrinking. We can expect screaming, threats, and even bloodshed from the obsolete system, but over time it will give up its operations piece by piece.</p>\n<p>This isn't to say that our new systems will be immaculate, but they'll be far better than the Bronze Age relics that currently dominate mankind.</p>\n<h3><strong>And if Not…</strong></h3>\n<p>If, for whatever reason, we fail to continue what we've begun, our new civilization still wins in the end. For one thing, human evolution continues. We are notably better than we were a few thousand years ago – qualitatively better – and we'll be still better in the future.</p>\n<p>More immediately than that, however, the next cycling of rulership will finish the job for us. As we covered back in <a href=\"https://www.freemansperspective.com/the-long-calendar-entropy-cycles-escape/\">FMP #18</a>, civilizations always cycle. They always have and almost certainly always will, until violence-backed hierarchy ends. When the next cycle comes along, it will do so in a rich technological environment. Because technology does <em>not</em> cycle. Rather, it accretes… it builds up.</p>\n<p>So, once the present hierarchies break up and vanish for a few hundred years, tech will be free to come out and play. We'll be free to reorganize in innovative new ways. Things simply will not be rebuilt according to the same old model. That's how history works.</p>\n<p>But while it's nice to know that the insanity will pass one way or another, I think all of us would like it to be sooner rather than later. For our own sakes and certainly for those of our offspring, time is important.       "body": "<img src=\"https://www.freemansperspective.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/11/ECB.jpg\" alt=\"ECB\" width=\"303\" height=\"200\" class=\"alignright size-full wp-image-8677\" />\n<p>Having been involved with digital currencies for quite a long time, I get more information on the subject than most people, and that includes information on what regulators are doing. I've been seeing differing strategies among the central banks for some time. But some information I obtained recently made the Euro–American difference very plain to me, and I think I should pass it along.</p>\n<h3><strong>The US Model</strong></h3>\n<p>It seems to me that this model is being spawned by the Treasury and associated agencies, rather than the Federal Reserve, but the Fed is such a black box that I can't say for sure.</p>\n<p>The model developing in the US is to take advantage of cryptocurrencies (that is, <a href=\"https://www.freemansperspective.com/tag/bitcoin/\">Bitcoin</a> and its children), rather than trying to kill them outright. And there are serious advantages to this strategy. Here's what they're doing:</p>\n<ul>\n<li>\n<p>The Treasury is reaping from the rise of Bitcoin, Ethereum, and the others. Capital gains taxes run in the 20–25% range, and with crypto prices surging every couple of years, that brings in some significant revenue. Accordingly, the IRS has made compliance easy, treating crypto gains precisely like gains in precious metals. Everyone understands that and knows how to deal with it. Exchanges like Coinbase are being quietly forced to comply with whatever the US government wants.</p>\n</li>\n<li>\n<p>They are moving to swallow up crypto incrementally. Regulators are surrounding the crypto scene gently, not aggressively. They show up at meetings and ask questions, rather than threatening people. They bring in <a href=\"https://www.freemansperspective.com/tag/crypto/\">crypto</a> advocates to make presentations at their offices. Little by little, they're not only learning how to deal with crypto but are convincing susceptible people that “a little regulation is necessary” because of scammers, hackers, or whatever flavor of fear seems to be working that month.</p>\n</li>\n<li>\n<p>They are allowing <a href=\"https://www.freemansperspective.com/tag/wall-street/\">Wall Street</a> to take incremental steps into crypto. They are making them go slowly, presumably not wanting to stoke crypto's fires, but they are allowing fully regulated and compliant firms to slide in. They've rejected all the ETF (exchange traded fund) proposals thus far, but that will likely change at some point, bringing higher and higher percentages of crypto holdings under their control. (Directly controlled by Goldman, etc., but ultimately controlled by the feds: Stockbrokers <em>always</em> comply.)</p>\n</li>\n<li>\n<p>Thus far they are holding the line at tax compliance for daily commerce. The obvious model for that would be how gold is handled, with transactions under a certain amount being exempt from reporting. And while laws have been proposed for this, none have been permitted to pass. What the feds want is to reap capital gains and discourage commerce.</p>\n</li>\n<li>\n<p>They are paying people whom I can describe only as sellouts to do blockchain analysis, hoping to attain a useful level of surveillance.</p>\n</li>\n</ul>\n<p>The financial power elite were actively seducing early Bitcoin developers for a while, but that seems not to have worked terribly well. Bitcoin, after all, is just a computer program, and no one by themselves can control it. (Neither can it ever go broke, but that's another story.)</p>\n<h3><strong>The Euro Strategy</strong></h3>\n<p>The strategy across the Pond is quite different. There, aggressive subversion is under way, mainly by the ECB (European Central Bank). Laws have been passed in some countries to explicitly make every tiny transaction a taxable event. This will have unintended consequences, but its goal is simply fear.</p>\n<p>Laws have also been passed making cryptocurrency wallets illegal to sell or distribute, unless the wallet forces a user to comply with AML (anti money laundering) rules.</p>\n<p>Behind the scenes, the Euro regulators are getting very aggressive. We know someone on the board of a bank in a smallish European country, in other words, a voice from the inside. Here's what that voice has told us:</p>\n<ul>\n<li>\n<p>Crypto is totally evil according to the central bank. It's absolutely radioactive for us. We are barely allowed to talk about it, let alone do something distantly related to it. We can't even lend to an entity that does crypto. We as bankers are not naturally against crypto as is often cited, but one step into the crypto arena and we would have regulators all over us.</p>\n</li>\n<li>\n<p>Our central bank gets its marching orders from the ECB, and the ECB's reach extends to other central banks. The press here is full of articles on how other countries are obstructing crypto.</p>\n</li>\n<li>\n<p>This reminds me of the huge effort in AML. The public may hear little but it's a massive issue in the financial sector and is at the crux of the battle on crypto. AML has become a monster that has vastly outgrown its initial purpose. (Or perhaps it is doing exactly what someone <em>really</em> wanted it to do.) It is a huge, expensive, and quite effective spy mechanism.</p>\n</li>\n<li>\n<p>The financial system has been turned into a massive database and search engine for authorities. It is a major weapon in the financial wars of the day and may be more effective than conventional weapons. In decades of banking I've never seen anything like it. Initially most bankers brushed it off as just another nuisance regulation, but this was not the case. This is a worldwide effort.</p>\n</li>\n<li>\n<p>If you don't cooperate, you are cut off. You basically can't make a mistake without very heavy penalties. You have to report on your customers or else you will look like you are not a player. The whole model is very Soviet and it works almost worldwide. Most bankers feel it is political issue wrapped in financial regulatory clothing. It's hard for the public to understand, and politicians won't touch it.</p>\n</li>\n<li>\n<p>The authorities are coming down on all institutions in the region. Correspondent lines are being cut… High-ranking US financial officials make house calls to all the finance ministries in the region and remind them about how compliance complements military and other aid… some of those compliance issues are such a hot potato that few managers are even willing to talk about them. [The financial elite] finally have open season on financial data and they don't want anyone taking that stick away, including crypto.</p>\n</li>\n</ul>\n<h3><strong>Final Thoughts</strong></h3>\n<p>So, there you have it. I <em>don’t</em> want to write about this. But circumstances give me little choice. The ancient poison has been spreading, and the last major pogrom (this one industrialized) ended 73 years ago. The pogrom cycle is coming around again.</p>\n<p>Most people, thankfully, are no longer susceptible to the poison. But others still are, and they are being openly encouraged. I can’t be sure how much this article will help, but neither can I watch in silence. I won’t.</p>\n<h3><strong>First Points</strong></h3>\n<p>Let me start by being very clear on a handful of basics:</p>\n<ol>\n<li>\n<p><strong>Israel is a state, a violence-based hierarchy like every other state.</strong> It has done and will continue to do immoral things. <em>That’s what all states do</em>. To focus solely on Israel is to distort reality for a separate purpose.</p>\n</li>\n<li>\n<p><strong>Zionism</strong><strong> had a reason… <em>has</em> a reason.</strong> To portray it as some kind of signature evil – to use the term as an all-purpose condemnation – is not based on reason or justice; it’s based on uglier things. And let me doubly clear: I am not a Zionist myself, but neither am I blind to the reasons for Zionism.</p>\n</li>\n<li>\n<p><strong>Jews come in all flavors: A few are saints, a few are sinners, and most are in between.</strong> Just like every other group you can point to.</p>\n</li>\n<li>\n<p><strong>Stories of Jewish conspiracies are vile fantasies.</strong> Do Jews sometimes do favors for other Jews? Sure, just like the Irish sometimes do favors for other Irishmen, Italians for other Italians, and so on. But no more than that. I’ve been in positions to know, and there was simply nothing there. But reality doesn’t matter in this area; those who crave such stories will grab them regardless.</p>\n</li>\n<li>\n<p><strong>Being anti-Jew is an obsessive disorder.</strong> Such people have a compulsion to accuse Jews. That’s why they cling to terms like <em>Zionist</em>, <em>Zio</em>, <em>the Chosen</em>, <em>the Tribe</em>, and now (((the triple parentheses))). They have a psychological need to say “Jews” – whether directly or through code words. Some of them troll the internet looking for opportunities.</p>\n</li>\n</ol>\n<p>Now I’ll get to some details.</p>\n<h3><strong>Israel</strong></h3>\n<p>Individual Israelis are no more responsible for the actions of the Israeli government than individual Americans are culpable for Abu Ghraib. Governments force people to pay for their crimes, and the government of Israel is no exception. And to pretend that Jews in general are somehow responsible for the actions of the Israeli government runs toward madness.</p>\n<p>The actions of the Israeli government are <a href=\"https://www.freemansperspective.com/stop-taking-the-news-seriously/\">front-page news</a> everywhere and at all times. That is fully out of touch with reality. In truth, it’s the result of a propaganda war that the Israelis are losing badly.</p>\n<p>Again, this is obsessive. Israel is less than 1% the size of Arab-held lands, and yet they are portrayed as the biggest, nastiest bully ever seen in the Middle East. And whatever the evils of the Israelis, I think they pale compared to large-scale <a href=\"https://nation.com.pk/07-Mar-2014/1600-pakistani-women-murdered-370-raped-in-2013\" target=\"_blank\">honor killings</a>, genital mutilations, and death sentences upon people who change religions. And yet, those stories are seen approximately never on CBS, NBC, ABC, CNN, FOX, MSNBC, etc.</p>\n<p>Consider also that the Israelis have made multiple and substantive peace overtures to the Palestinians, while the Hamas Charter openly calls for Israel’s destruction.</p>\n<p>Israel is a barely visible spec on a world map and is projecting military power almost nowhere beyond its own tiny borders. And contrary to what you may have heard, Israel’s military budget is less than one-third of Saudi Arabia’s. Likewise, while Israel does get considerable US military financing, Egypt gets more.</p>\n<p>These days, however, <a href=\"https://www.tabletmag.com/jewish-news-and-politics/183033/israel-insider-guide\" target=\"_blank\">facts seldom get in the way of a flamboyant story</a>.</p>\n<p>And please remember that 1.6 million Arabs are legal citizens and legal voters in Israel. I encourage you to discover how many Jews are legal citizens and/or legal voters in Jordan, Arabia, and so on.</p>\n<h3><strong>Zionism</strong></h3>\n<p>The Jews were ejected from Judea, their long-time homeland, in stages, but mainly in 70 AD and 132 AD. Ever since, they’ve been repetitively beaten, robbed, killed, expelled in mass, shut up in ghettos, and denied recourse for their grievances. This has continued for almost 2,000 years. Can any sane person <em>not</em> understand their desire for a safe place?</p>\n<p><strong><em>That is what Zionism is about.</em></strong></p>\n<p>Jews tried all kinds of strategies to cope with their endless abuse. None of them worked long term. That’s how Israel became the solution.</p>\n<p>And by the way, Zionists <em>purchased</em> their land from the Arabs, until they were attacked for it.</p>\n<h3><strong>Jews</strong></h3>\n<p>What confuses people about the Jews is that they are a religion and a people, even a nation, with or without the state of Israel. But that’s not unique. The Basques, for example, have been both a people and a nation for a long, long time, whether or not they had a state.</p>\n<p>In any event, the Hebrews and the Jews (the same folks, though I draw a line between the two designations in the 6<sup>th</sup> century BC) have been hated throughout history. They were hated at 2500 BC, they were hated at 500 BC and 500 AD and 1500 AD, and they’re sometimes hated now.</p>\n<p>They’ve been hated for lots of reasons of course, but a major component of it was that they made other people, and especially sacrifice collectors, look bad. And making such people look bad is a dangerous line of work.</p>\n<p>So, how did they anger the sacrifice collectors? Well, that’s something the Jews have inadvertently specialized in. Here are the primary ways:</p>\n<ul>\n<li>\n<p>They developed belief in a god that dealt with individuals rather than collectives. (City-states being the primary collectives at the time.) That was contrary to the rationale of sacrifice for Sumerians, Egyptians, Greeks, and Romans.</p>\n</li>\n<li>\n<p>Making matters worse, the Jews described a god who listened to and spoke to the humble and who turned his back to the mighty. Again, that disrupted the ruling rationale of the empires.</p>\n</li>\n<li>\n<p>Making things still worse, the Jews placed justice <em>above</em> the ruler, another intolerable demotion of the big man, who demanded to be justice personified.</p>\n</li>\n<li>\n<p>Because of these three offenses, the Hebrews and Jews were generally pushed out of polite company and forced to live on the peripheries. And from that they learned to think and operate as outsiders: separate from enforced hierarchies and collectives. That, to the sacrifice collectors, turned the Jews into a potentially deadly virus.</p>\n</li>\n<li>\n<p>On top of that, Jews always majored on morality, which meant that they’d consistently show the world a humane outside, something that shouldn’t exist according to the legends of the nations.</p>\n</li>\n</ul>\n<h3><strong>Last Words</strong></h3>\n<p>Rather than going on, I’ll close with a single line from Eric Hoffer’s <a href=\"https://www.amazon.com/dp/1933435097\" target=\"_blank\"><em>The Passionate State of Mind</em></a>.       "title": "Perpetual Abuse in the Catholic Church",
      "body": "<html>\n<p><img src=\"https://www.freemansperspective.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/08/CatholicChurch-300x198.jpg\" width=\"300\" height=\"198\"/></p><div style=\"line-height: 125%; font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 14px;\">\n<p>Before I get to details, let me be clear that I am <em>not</em> trying to destroy the Church, and I’m certainly not criticizing individual Catholics, most of whom are decent human beings and good neighbors. (And the victims in this as well.)</p>\n<p>The Church has a problem… a huge problem. Furthermore, the problem is very old and will never go away until its cause is removed. So long as the cause remains, the effects will forever follow. Scribbles on official papers have no chance of changing it.</p>\n<h3><strong>Pittsburgh</strong></h3>\n<p>By now you’ve probably heard about the big new scandal: Some 300 priests abused some 1000+ boys and girls in Pennsylvania. You can find the heroic report <a href=\"https://cbspittsburgh.files.wordpress.com/2018/08/interimredactedreportandresponses.pdf\" target=\"_blank\">here</a>.</p>\n<p>I have to add, however, that the story has been given rather spotty coverage. Several major outlets covered it very little or not at all.</p>\n<p>The report linked above did an excellent job of explaining how these things are covered up by the Church. It goes like this:</p>\n<ol>\n<li>\n<p>Never say “rape”; say “inappropriate contact” or “boundary issues.”</p>\n</li>\n<li>\n<p>Assign fellow clergy members to make credibility determinations about the colleagues with whom they live and work.</p>\n</li>\n<li>\n<p>Send priests for “evaluation” at church-run psychiatric treatment centers. Allow these so-called experts to “diagnose” whether the priest is a pedophile. Base these determinations largely on the priest’s “self -reports,” regardless of whether the priest has actually engaged in sexual contact with a child.</p>\n</li>\n<li>\n<p>When a priest is removed, don’t explain Tell his parishioners that he’s on “sick leave” or suffering from “nervous exhaustion.” Or say nothing at all.</p>\n</li>\n<li>\n<p>Even if a priest is raping children, keep providing him housing and living expenses, although he may be using these resources to facilitate more sexual assaults.</p>\n</li>\n<li>\n<p>If a predator’s conduct becomes known to the community, don’t remove him from the priesthood. Instead, transfer him to a new location where no one will know he is a child abuser.</p>\n</li>\n<li>\n<p>Above all, don’t tell the police. Handle it as a personnel matter.</p>\n</li>\n</ol>\n<p>But these revelations, as disgusting as they are, are merely the most recent. (See other recent revelations <a href=\"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Catholic_sex_abuse_cases#Prevalence\" target=\"_blank\">here</a>.) This has been going on for roughly a thousand years, <strong><em>continuously</em></strong>.</p>\n<p>And so long as celibacy requirements remain, this will continue and nothing will stop it. Consider this, please:</p>\n<ol>\n<li>\n<p>Celibacy weaponizes sexual urges. It also drives normal young men away from the priesthood, leaving a high percentage of damaged or corruptible young men in their wake.</p>\n</li>\n<li>\n<p>If the Church cracks down too hard on abusive clergy, they may run out of priests (there’s already a significant shortage in the US), and the continuation of the Church comes into question.</p>\n</li>\n</ol>\n<p>Like it or not, that’s the situation, and it has been this way since celibacy became required (in stages, from about 305 AD to 1139 AD). And it continues unabated. It will not stop so long as celibacy is required for Catholic priests.</p>\n<p>And for those who didn’t know, celibacy was <em>not</em> <a href=\"https://www.freemansperspective.com/jesus-versus-religion/\">promoted by Jesus</a>. Furthermore, some of the apostles (including St. Peter) were married.</p>\n<h3><strong>My Stories</strong></h3>\n<p>I’ve been close to Catholics and Catholicism most of my life, and I’ve accumulated stories along the way. Since stories of this kind never receive public attention, I want to share them here.</p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><strong>The half-married priest</strong></p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">I used to live down the hall from a devout Catholic mother and daughter. And over time, I couldn’t help noticing that after Sunday services, a particular priest would come to their house for lunch. He’d also stop in certain afternoons… times at which the mother would be away for some hours.</p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">Clearly, the priest and the daughter were a couple. In fact, they were a long-term, loving couple. I felt sorry for them. They were both decent people but were condemned to a life in the shadows, and they would never have a normal family.</p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">This was, sad to say, one of the best cases, in which all the sexual activity was voluntary, even if potentially shaming and certainly difficult to reconcile with what these people called holy.</p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><strong>The seminaries of the 1970s</strong></p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">I knew a woman from a Catholic family whose younger brother decided to become a priest. After three weeks at the seminary, his mother went for a visit, whereupon he told her, “Get me out of here, now!”</p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">Horrified, the mother, a devout Catholic who’d been very proud that her son would become a priest, said she couldn’t and demanded to know why.</p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">“They’re all queers,” said the son, vehemently. The mother, doubly horrified, insisted that it could not be so.</p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">“Take me to a doctor and have him examine me!” shouted the son.</p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">The mother, to her credit, did take the boy to a doctor. Then she confronted Church officials and had the boy excused from the seminary, contrary to the rules. And if I recall correctly, the other children in the family got free schooling from then on.</p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">No one was punished of course, and the matter disappeared.</p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><strong>The abuser with improbable connections</strong></p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">I had some business dealings with a former priest who was tried in a high-profile sex abuse case. But I didn’t know who he was at the time; I met him in my normal course of business and thought no more about it until someone alerted me to the fact.</p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">Somehow, this man went directly from his parish to run a fairly large industry association… apparently with no experience in the industry at all.</p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">How that could happen is an intriguing question.</p>\n<h3><strong>It’s Always the Poor Kids</strong></h3>\n<p>Before I conclude, I want to point out that the kids who are abused are nearly always from poor and/or broken families. <a href=\"https://www.freemansperspective.com/the-status-quo-has-been-a-haven-for-predators/\">Abusers</a> don’t go after rich kids whose parents have the resources to fry them.</p>\n<p>So, the poor are set up to be victimized yet again… by self-avowed “advocates for the poor.”</p>\n<h3><strong>So…</strong></h3>\n<p>I want to state the obvious one more time:</p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">It is the celibacy requirement that’s driving the sexual abuse of poor, weak, and especially, young Catholics… and has been driving it for some 1,000 years. So long as this cause remains, its effects will remain. Period.</p>\n<p>Celibacy had no root whatsoever in early Christianity. But today I’m hard pressed to avoid either, and so I’ll just go with it.</p>\n<p>I can’t avoid Adolph because he said something more clearly than anyone else I’m able to quote. Here’s the passage:</p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">I have not come into this world to make men better, but to make use of their weaknesses.</p>\n<p>And that’s precisely what he did. It’s also what Google, Facebook, and other “free sh*t” providers are doing. <em>They are amassing power by using human weaknesses… </em>and the bosses know it quite well.</p>\n<h3><strong>The Foundation of the Problem</strong></h3>\n<p>A friend recently sent me an article by Nathan McDonald of “Sprott Money News.” In it, Mr. McDonald complains that people “are blissfully ignoring the ensnaring net that is slowly being drawn around them.” And he’s right of course. He goes on to say,</p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">The digital dark age is here, and the elite few tech giants that are ushering it in are beginning their attack on anyone, anything that does not agree with their echo chamber of thought.</p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">A small handful of companies, you know their names well, virtually control a massive part of our society now. They have near complete control over many aspects of your lives, and don’t for a second think that they don’t.</p>\n<p>And again, Mr. McDonald is not wrong, although it goes even farther than he notes; all of this is tied into the Western spy agencies. Consider: If you were a spymaster, is there any chance you’d ignore the ability to deeply surveil a couple of billion people at once? Especially if it was all automated and maintained at the expense of others? You’d be the worst spymaster in history if you didn’t.</p>\n<p>And so Facebook, and especially Google, have been brought into the security complex. (You can see some damning emails <a href=\"https://www.freemansperspective.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/01/FMPWikiLeaksSpecialReport.pdf\">in our report</a>.)</p>\n<p>The thing is, people could opt out of it all (well, nearly all of it) in a single day, if they weren’t trapped by their own weaknesses. The company I manage (<a href=\"https://secure.cryptohippie.com/\" target=\"_blank\">Cryptohippie</a>) has been doing just that for more than a decade, and there are now others providing similar services. Plus, there are functional dark nets. Throwing sand in Sauron’s eye isn’t beyond people’s technical or monetary abilities… it’s just beyond their emotional abilities.</p>\n<h3><strong>Which Weaknesses?</strong></h3>\n<p>Okay, let’s get specific.</p>\n<p>First are the social instincts: getting your esteem from others, feeling like part of a group and feeling unable (or afraid) to leave it. Becoming dependent upon their approval, building your life around them, and feeling a deep void at the thought of losing them. Humans are susceptible to these things, and Facebook plays them to the hilt. They even design programs to keep people addicted.</p>\n<p>The second weakness is the one that brings people into the trap. It’s the one that Google especially uses. And it is this: Humans have a deep fear of scarcity.</p>\n<p>Here’s what I replied to the friend who sent me Mr. McDonald’s article:</p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">Most people live in perpetual fear of scarcity (even though they experience no actual privation) and are abject suckers for free stuff. The entire system rests upon that weakness.</p>\n<p>I think we’ve all felt the overly strong impulse to grab at anything free. We may understand very well that we’re accepting the proverbial “candy from the man in the car.” We adults understand on some level that we’re being lied to – no one provides long-term services that are actually free – but we jump at the offer just the same.</p>\n<p>On top of that, nearly none of us in the West are suffering from lack of material resources. We’d have no problem paying a couple of dollars per month for email and search services. And yet we feel compelled to grasp at free stuff… even though we know that the offer comes from liars with hidden motives.</p>\n<p>Yeah, something’s wrong in us. And it links back to a fear of scarcity. Not only is it an old fear (it had some factual basis in the old days), but it is stoked in us day by day.</p>\n<p>Try, if you dare, to count the number of ads you are confronted with every day, and see if you can locate the obscure “you’re insufficient without this” message in them.</p>\n<p>They say that some of the American Indians used to fear having their photos taken, as the photo might capture their souls. But this is precisely what Google, Facebook, et al., are doing: They’re taking your digital soul, handing it to the world’s most intrusive spy agencies, <a href=\"https://www.freemansperspective.com/googles-mendacity-the-selfish-ledger-decyphered/\">manipulating you based upon it</a>, and now are playing truth police at the behest of behind-the-scene elites.       "body": "<html>\n<p><img src=\"https://www.freemansperspective.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/08/Righteousness-300x198.jpg\" width=\"300\" height=\"198\"/></p>\n<div style=\"line-height: 125%; font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 14px;\">\n<p>“Righteousness” is a seldom heard word in modern life, but the concept is still very much with us. In fact, political arguments all through the West focus on shows of righteousness.</p>\n<p>So, how does someone show themself to be righteous without ever coming near the word? It’s done with a simple trick that you’ll recognize immediately:</p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">Rather than declaring ourselves righteous, we show ourselves to be the enemy of unrighteousness, gaining the same result without ever having to utter the R-word.</p>\n<p>Here are a couple of examples:</p>\n<ul>\n<li>\n<p>If you’re an American left-winger, you talk about the monsters who tear children from their parents, who collude with enemies to steal elections, and who’d support the KKK if they could.</p>\n</li>\n<li>\n<p>If you’re an American right-winger, you talk about the insane defenders of cop-killers who want to destroy our civilization and who violently attack anyone voicing a contrary opinion.</p>\n</li>\n</ul>\n<p>By raging against the evil of your adversary, you take on the gleam of righteousness – you’re defending the world from evil, after all – but you stay far from religion or even an obligation to behave well.</p>\n<p>The trick has worked exceptionally well, and the voting public sees politicians as agents of righteousness, even if the word is never used.</p>\n<h3><strong>The Decider of All Moral Questions</strong></h3>\n<p>Can you think of any area of life that isn’t impacted by politics these days? Everything from what you know to how you raise your children to how you die is affected by politics, which is <a href=\"https://www.freemansperspective.com/stop-caring-about-politics/\">the true god of the age.</a> This is something Peter Drucker noted as it was forming:</p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">Increasingly, politics is not about “who gets what, when, how” but about values, each of them considered to be absolute. Politics is about “the right to life”… It is about the environment. It is about gaining equality for groups alleged to be oppressed… None of these issues is economic. All are fundamentally moral.</p>\n<p>Politics, to put it simply, has overtaken society. In eras past, politics was limited mainly to the realm of the external. Ruling types would tell you how property would be bought and sold, where soldiers would be sent, and how much of your money would be taken… but they seldom told you what to think or how to speak. However, once they got into the habit of telling every child in their domain how to think and speak and run or walk – as they did with <a href=\"https://www.freemansperspective.com/children-adventure-danger/\">government -operated schools</a> – they found one way after another to expand that dominance (which is like crack cocaine to ruling types) throughout the whole of the civilization.</p>\n<p>And that’s where we stand now: Politicians feel confident inserting themselves into any and every area of life. And they do precisely that, expecting to be thanked for it as well. (And there are always enough sycophants to do so.)</p>\n<p>Politicians of course are anything but righteous. Their work involves two fully amoral activities:</p>\n<ol>\n<li>\n<p><strong>Say</strong> whatever is required to get votes.</p>\n</li>\n<li>\n<p><strong>Do</strong> whatever is required to get donations.</p>\n</li>\n</ol>\n<p>And since #2 turns #1 into lies, we can confidently say that politics is the practice of unrighteousness. And in fact, nearly all modern people will admit that politicians are liars and thieves.</p>\n<p>Still, the well-trained politician can use the trick we opened with and suck the populace into a moral drama that pays them off with feelings of righteousness. More than that, the people can feel righteous nearly for free; all they have to do is support a slayer of iniquity.</p>\n<p>At the same time – and all of us have noticed this to one extent or another – politics has also overtaken big business, as Frederick C. Howe wrote back in 1906:</p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">These are the rules of big business. They have superseded the teachings of our parents and are reducible to a simple maxim: Get a monopoly; let Society work for you: and remember that the best of all business is politics, for a legislative grant, franchise, subsidy or tax exemption is worth more than a Kimberly or Comstock lode, since it does not require any labor, either mental or physical, for its exploitation.</p>\n<h3><strong>The Fate of the Populace</strong></h3>\n<p>Honestly, I think it’s a good thing that the Western populace is still committed to righteousness, even if they don’t realize it. That’s a characteristic that may be engaged positively in the future.</p>\n<p>But right now, the <a href=\"https://www.freemansperspective.com/governments-manipulate/\">people of the West are massively manipulated</a> by their instinct for righteousness. Still, I don’t think this condition will endure forever. All things change, and the dream of righteousness through politics disappoints endlessly. At some point, people will choose to see it.</p>\n<p>Until then, a lot of disappointment, confusion, and suffering awaits. To put it bluntly, so long as the Western public believes in the union of righteousness and politics, it will be strip-mined without mercy and without end. Alex Jones has been banned from Facebook, YouTube, iTunes, and I’m not sure what else… all within 24 hours or so, as I hear it. And he was not alone – others have been banned too. What I want you to understand is this:</p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">There’s only one reason this was done now: <strong>because they might get away with it.</strong></p>\n<p>I see very little of Mr. Jones’ material, but he’s clearly exposing a lot of things the deep-state types don’t like. And believing themselves to be rightful rulers – and believing that the Mr. Joneses of the world ought to be obedient and thankful – they feel entirely correct in eliminating their ridiculous opposition.</p>\n<h3><strong>Why It Works Now</strong></h3>\n<p>I’ll be brief:</p>\n<ol>\n<li>\n<p><strong>The tech companies have been brought into the machine. </strong>They’ve already altered their products to suit the spy agencies and have agents and counteragents all through their operations. When spymasters ask for favors, they do them. Furthermore, they’re super rich, and that makes you a friend of politicians by default. At that level, you need politicians to protect you, in addition to regulating away pesky competitors. And finally, they are all beholden to the money power and their low-interest loans. When mega-bankers pass a request to you through your board of directors, you comply.</p>\n</li>\n<li>\n<p><strong>Half the political world will cheer for it.</strong> In fact, they’ll say it’s necessary in order “to save our democracy.” That’s childish drivel of course, but it’s drivel that will sell to a huge contingent of over-angered, revenge-seeking types.</p>\n</li>\n<li>\n<p><strong>The other half will petition Congress to regulate the tech companies.</strong> Again that’s ridiculous, since it was the state apparatus that created the problem in the first place. But idolizing the state, no matter how horribly they behave, is the superstition of the age, and changing such a thing requires real psychological strength. And so, calls for an Internet Bill of Rights or some such nonsense will ring through this contingent.</p>\n</li>\n<li><strong>Even if they have to pull back, they’ll still gain ground.</strong> Two steps forward, one step back, in the finest Stalinist tradition.</li>\n</ol>\n<p>So, if you’re part of the deep state, why not go for it now?</p>\n<p>And so they have.</p>\n<h3><strong>What Courage Would Look Like</strong></h3>\n<p>Courage at this moment would involve the banned parties – and everyone else they could find – building their own social networks (or pouring money into one of the alternatives) and bringing everyone over. In other words, to ignore the thugs and sycophants and build their own. Hire a few dozen engineers and get started. Then hire the necessary support and management people.       "body": "<html>\n<p><img src=\"https://www.freemansperspective.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/08/theBible-300x198.jpg\" width=\"300\" height=\"198\"/></p>\n<div style=\"line-height: 125%; font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 14px;\">\n<p>The Bible has been loudly, publicly, and repetitively criticized for a long time, and it’s most vocal defenders have been those who demand that it be treated as a divine oracle. In other words, the public has been given a binary choice:</p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">Either the Bible is horrible, or else it’s divine and you’ll go to hell if you don’t think so.</p>\n<p>I think that’s a silly choice, but it’s the one most people see.</p>\n<p>On top of that, I couldn’t think of a single reasoned defense of the book, though there must be a decent one somewhere. And so, I want to point out its value. Whatever its flaws<a href=\"#_ftn1\" name=\"_ftnref1\"><sup style=\"font-size:10px;\">[1]</sup></a>, they pale in comparison.</p>\n<p>We’ll start with this:</p>\n<h3><strong>Compassion for the “Other”</strong></h3>\n<p>Consider, please, how many lives have been senselessly lost because of stirred-up hatreds. Rulers and court intellectuals have had an easy time portraying the outsider – the “other” – as an object to be hated and killed, and have left mounds of corpses in their wake… <em>often with the two groups trading and intermarrying a generation later!</em></p>\n<p>This barbaric call to butchery has been made over and over and over: People are told to hate the other, one nation rises against another, and so on, again and again. It’s a monstrous beast that rushes in when summoned.</p>\n<p>So, can we ignore the benefits of a book that teaches the opposite? That teaches love of the other rather than tribal bloodlust?</p>\n<p>This is precisely <a href=\"https://www.freemansperspective.com/jesus-didnt-say/\">what we find in the Bible</a>, and especially from Jesus. Consider what he says in this passage:</p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">You have heard that it was said, “You shall love your neighbor and hate your enemy.” But I say to you, Love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you, so that you may be sons of your Father who is in heaven; for he makes his sun rise on the evil and on the good, and sends rain on the just and on the unjust.</p>\n<p>Here’s one that addresses the same thing from a different angle:</p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">What do you think? If a man has a hundred sheep, and one of them has gone astray, does he not leave the ninety-nine on the mountains and go in search of the one that went astray? And if he finds it, truly, I say to you, he rejoices over it more than over the ninety-nine that never went astray.</p>\n<p>Here’s a call for loving outsiders from one of the earliest books in the Bible:</p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">[The Lord your God] executes justice for the fatherless and the widow, and loves the sojourner, giving him food and clothing. Love the sojourner therefore; for you were sojourners in the land of Egypt.</p>\n<p>Added to all this is the great example of Jesus as he was being crucified: “Father, forgive them. They know not what they do.”</p>\n<p>Where but from the Bible or from people influenced by the Bible do we find such civilized and civilizing thoughts?</p>\n<h3><strong>Integrity</strong></h3>\n<p>Where’s a young person to learn integrity these days? It certainly won’t be from politicians. Fortunately is does come from good families, good teachers, good coaches, etc., but even those channels frequently link back to the Bible.</p>\n<p>From the Torah passage above (you were sojourners, so you should help the sojourner) to the wonderful story of Nathan using integrity to condemn David (too long to repeat here, but you can find it in 2 Samuel, chapter 12) to the following sayings of Jesus, the Bible teaches integrity over and over.</p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">Whatever you would have men do unto you, do so to them.</p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">With whatever judgment you judge, you shall be judged.</p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">By <em>your</em> words you will be justified, and by <em>your</em> words you shall be condemned.</p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">Forgive our debts as we forgive our debtors.</p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">If you forgive men their trespasses, your heavenly Father will also forgive you. But if you do not forgive men their trespasses, neither will your Father forgive your trespasses.</p>\n<p>It would be hard to teach integrity more directly than that, and those are just some of the relevant passages.</p>\n<p>Needless to say, integrity carries benefits into all areas of life and has follow-on effects that long endure.</p>\n<h3><strong>Benevolence</strong></h3>\n<p>There’s really nothing that cultivates human happiness, that supports human civilization, more than simple benevolence. Without it, we’re pretty well doomed. And demands for benevolence are found abundantly in the Bible. Here are a few of the more notable instances:</p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">You shall love your neighbor as yourself.</p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">Rend your hearts and not your garments.</p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">Let love be genuine.</p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">If I have prophetic powers, and understand all mysteries and all knowledge… but have not love, I am nothing.</p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">He who does not love does not know God.</p>\n<h3><strong>And Much More</strong></h3>\n<p>There’s much more to be said, including things that don’t immediately leap to mind for most of us. Here are a few:</p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">Endless calls for justice.</p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">A God who speaks to the powerless, rather than to the mighty.</p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">An individual spirituality rather than a collective spirituality.</p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">The Bible teaches individuality by making God a distinct individual. With this pattern in the minds of men, they are less afraid to think as individuals. As a result, they tend to come up with better ideas and to produce better results.</p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">The Bible glorifies men who have deep changes of heart. This not only allows us to start anew and improve, but it removes guilt for our past actions. There can be problems associated with this from a justice standpoint, but it has massively assisted human improvement.</p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">A second-order effect of things covered above is the assumption of co-dominance: I’m not dominating you and you’re not dominating me; we can both be strong and friendly at the same time. Where this is absent, anger festers, compassion fails, grudges are never released, and endless volumes of energy are wasted in posturing and scheming. Where it is present, cooperation rules and massive accomplishments can arise. This teaching is also seen explicitly, here:</p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 60px;\"><a href=\"https://www.freemansperspective.com/one-line-bible-need-ignore/\">The rulers of the Gentiles lord it over them</a>, and their great men exercise authority over them, but it shall not be so among you.</p>\n<h3><strong>Still Don’t Like the Bible?</strong></h3>\n<p>If you still don’t want the book, fine, that’s your choice. Even if we venture into the realm of <em>Star Trek</em>, we still find heroes authorized by government. (The Federation.)</p>\n<p>The same goes for movies. Here are three showing near me:</p>\n<p>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; <em>Mission Impossible</em>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; Government agents</p>\n<p>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; <em>The Equalizer 2</em>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; CIA operative</p>\n<p>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; <em>Skyscraper</em>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; FBI agent</p>\n<p>You get the point. Certainly there are comedies and even the occasional exception among dramas, but the heroes of Hollywood are nearly all government authorized. Even when government agents are portrayed as wildly out of control and dangerous (as in <em>Enemy of </em><em>t</em><em>he State</em>, for example), it’s good government agents who end up saving the day in the end.</p>\n<p>When was the last film you saw that featured a heroic doctor or businessman or (gasp) a philosopher or saint?</p>\n<h3><strong>Government + Violence = Good</strong></h3>\n<p>It’s all too easy for dramas to major on violence. That’s the most obvious and visceral type of conflict, after all. But to make the violence good in some way, to sanctify it, is essential. If not, we end up writing stories about very bad people who succeed, and that strikes nearly all of us as wrong. (Thankfully.)</p>\n<p>Why, then, should the sole agent of sanctification be the state? Historically this is a wild anomaly. Was Hercules state sanctified? Were Abraham or Moses or Jesus?</p>\n<p>Were the Wright brothers or Bell or Edison? Or the Curies? Where they not heroes as well?</p>\n<p>And what of Sherlock Homes or Huckleberry Finn or Robinson Crusoe or even Paul Kersey?</p>\n<p>And yet Hollywood produces almost no heroes without also presenting the state as the womb in which heroism is formed. Honestly, it’s an <a href=\"https://www.freemansperspective.com/liberty-art/\">artistic disgrace</a>… a sycophantic sellout.</p>\n<h3><strong>Two Big Reasons</strong></h3>\n<p>There are many reasons why this is currently the case, including things like, “The first cop procedural made money, so everyone’s copying it.” Beneath these, however, are two big drivers:</p>\n<ul>\n<li>\n<p><strong>US government agencies are major players in Hollywood.</strong> <a href=\"https://www.independent.co.uk/voices/hollywood-cia-washington-dc-films-fbi-24-intervening-close-relationship-a7918191.html\" target=\"_blank\"><em>The Independent</em></a> found that the Pentagon backed more than 1,100 movies – 900 of them between 2005 and 2017 – including <em>Flight 93</em>, <em>Ice Road Truckers</em>, and <em>Army Wives</em>. The book, <a href=\"https://www.amazon.com/dp/1548084980\" target=\"_blank\"><em>National Security Cinema: The Shocking New Evidence of Government Control in Hollywood</em></a>, catalogs many more and shows that the government suppressed plot lines about illegal arms sales, the CIA dealing in drugs, creation of bioweapons by the military, the interaction between private armies and oil companies, the treatment of minorities by the government, torture, and the failure to prevent 9/11. <a href=\"http://www.informationclearinghouse.info/article22893.htm\" target=\"_blank\">Matthew Alford and Robbie Graham cataloged still more in 2009.</a></p>\n</li>\n<li>\n<p><strong>Democracy has supplanted Christianity.</strong> As I’ve noted recently, it used to be that <a href=\"https://www.freemansperspective.com/how-science-became-an-idol/\">people looked to the Bible as a moral standard</a>. Over the past couple of centuries, however, Christianity and its book have been removed and replaced with nothing at all. Filling that void has been Democracy<sup>TM</sup>, which isn’t really democracy and which has simply become an idol. At one time the governments of the West had to show themselves legitimate by supporting and honoring the Bible or at least a Christian religion. Now they show themselves legitimate by lauding the amorphous “democracy,” which really amounts to lauding themselves.</p>\n</li>\n</ul>\n<p>So, we have a situation where government is all in all: There is no outside standard by which to judge. <strong><em>“Democracy” is both the government and the justification for government at the same time.</em></strong> But since logic is no longer taught in school (and since it is scary to insult power) nearly everyone accepts this as “The way things are… don’t make trouble.”</p>\n<p>In this situation, why wouldn’t a government manipulate the stories people consume? Who’s going to complain? A few angry heretics?</p>\n<p>And given all of this, are we really surprised that Hollywood turned into a den of abuse?</p>\n<p><a href=\"https://www.freemansperspective.com/boiling-frogs/\">We desperately need an outside standard by which to judge the world.</a> Our lack of one is becoming glaringly obvious.</p>\n<p>I can survive with the Bible as a central reference, so long as no one gets a monopoly on interpretation. This is something very few people do in the modern West, and it illustrates a fundamental change in our civilization.</p>\n<p>Consider, as a further illustration, the seemingly mundane issue of naming streets. In the 19<sup>th</sup> century, new streets were named after great men. By the late 20<sup>th</sup> century that had changed entirely. Now, streets are named after geographical features: Fox Run, Spring Grove, Forest Ridge, and so on.</p>\n<p>While any individual street name may be trivial by itself, a complete change in a naming convention amongst hundreds of millions of people speaks of something deeper. So does the fact that almost no one in the West hangs images and words of personal devotion on their walls any longer. Mainly they hang abstract art.</p>\n<h3><strong>What Does This Mean?</strong></h3>\n<p>The lady in the first photo placed images of meaningful people on her walls: beloved progenitors, holy men, and so on. These were “higher than mundane” standards to her: inspiration toward the high and good… and more than that, transcendent <em>human</em> inspirations.</p>\n<p>If and when you have a chance, I encourage you to attend a cocktail party or some such gathering and begin to talk about the beauty and genius of mankind. But I also suggest that you be prepared to be insulted, because such talk is heresy in modern circles. Man, it is understood, is dirty, low, and dangerous. And it is because of this that we no longer place images of great women and men on our walls.</p>\n<p>There are a few exceptions of course, but they are exceptions, not the norm.</p>\n<p>What this means is:</p>\n<ul>\n<li>\n<p><strong>We no longer revere humans</strong>, except the idols of this year’s election of course. They’re our versions of Rome’s gladiators. We (and I’m using “we” very broadly today) watch as they slash and thrust at each other, cheering for our side, and imagining that the spectacle will somehow improve our lives. But we have lost all sight of great and transcendent men and women. And so we have lost the expectation of ourselves becoming better than we are, save through the <a href=\"https://www.freemansperspective.com/political-ideologies/\">muck of politics</a>. But with the transcendent man’s face on our wall, we had an image of someone higher to think about and relate to. These images helped us improve and aspire to higher things.</p>\n</li>\n<li>\n<p><strong>We no longer have a</strong><strong>n independent standard.</strong> Back when the West had Christianity, there was always an outside standard by which to judge the world. The king may have had the power to kill, but his actions were always compared to a higher standard. And because of that he could be roundly condemned. (And often was.) With that standard taken away – and replaced with a gaping void – we’re left with no star to guide by. Within that vacuum, <a href=\"https://www.freemansperspective.com/politicians-the-secret-appeal-of-politics/\">filthy politics has become the god of the age</a>, holding power over all human affairs.</p>\n</li>\n</ul>\n<h3><strong>How Did This Happen?</strong></h3>\n<p>The answer is complex, but I’ll summarize here very briefly:</p>\n<ol>\n<li>\n<p>Christianity was regimented and its implementations were broadly corrupted. Judaism, the other outside standard, was shoved away and violently punished… frequently.</p>\n</li>\n<li>\n<p>The Enlightenment turned dark about halfway through its run and attacked everything outside itself.</p>\n</li>\n<li>\n<p>Nation-states consolidated and grew very large, <a href=\"https://www.freemansperspective.com/democracy-greeks-america/\">legitimating themselves with democracy</a> rather than Christianity.</p>\n</li>\n<li>\n<p>Huge wars repetitively decimated the West, bringing death and privation to millions of families and driving dark philosophies to the fore.</p>\n</li>\n<li>\n<p>As laws, regulations, and agencies multiplied, law was overcome by politics and society was overtaken by the state.</p>\n</li>\n<li>\n<p>The political left learned to win by endlessly criticizing traditional society, a practice that continues. At the same time, the political right came to believe that state-sanctioned violence was inherently virtuous; by this (and the associated “good guy/bad guy” narrative) the most outgoing branches of Christianity were brought into partnership with the state.</p>\n</li>\n</ol>\n<p>There’s much more to say on this subject (and I refer you to <a href=\"https://www.freemansperspective.com/about_freemans_perspective/\">issues #42, 67, and 90 of FMP</a>), but this gives you a general outline. The West has lost its sense that humans can be great. Evidently Donald Trump had a summit with Vladimir Putin and uttered unspeakable words. After Putin denied interfering in the 2016 election, Trump said this:</p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">He just said it’s not Russia. I will say this, I don’t see any reason why it would be.</p>\n<p>And from that, all hell broke loose.</p>\n<p>Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell quickly held his own press conference and said:</p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">I have said a number of times, I’ll say it again: The Russians are not our friends. And I entirely believe the assessment of our intelligence community.</p>\n<p>Arnold Schwarzenegger, in bizarre form, reported that Trump looked like “a little wet noodle.”</p>\n<p>Former CIA Director John Brennan raged that “Donald Trump’s press conference performance in Helsinki… was… treasonous… he is wholly in the pocket of Putin.”</p>\n<p>On and on it went, including shills from both the Blue and Red teams.</p>\n<p>At first I tried to verify exactly what it was they were all freaking out about, with limited success. And then I saw that the words themselves were a secondary factor, as <a href=\"https://www.washingtonpost.com/opinions/this-sad-embarrassing-wreck-of-a-man/2018/07/17/d06de8ea-89e8-11e8-a345-a1bf7847b375_story.html?noredirect=on&amp;utm_term=.da9420cc728f\" target=\"_blank\">George Will explained</a>:</p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">What, precisely, did President Trump say about the diametrically opposed statements by U.S. intelligence agencies (and the Senate Intelligence Committee) and by Putin concerning Russia and the 2016 U.S. elections? Precision is not part of Trump’s repertoire: He speaks English as though it is a second language that he learned from someone who learned English last week. So, it is usually difficult to sift meanings from Trump’s word salads. But in Helsinki he was, for him, crystal clear about feeling no allegiance to the intelligence institutions that work at his direction and under leaders he chose.</p>\n<p>I could go on, but there’s no point. You’ve doubtless seen this yourself. The key takeaway is that saying anything the military-security complex doesn’t like is considered treasonous. And let’s be clear: All Trump did was say a few words. There was no policy change, only a short comment that he didn’t see why the Russians would do such a thing. That’s almost trivial. But it set the military-security complex into hysterics. So much so that even such a person as Donald Trump was forced to issue a lame retraction.</p>\n<p>So, how much pressure can the “forever war” complex place on even the highest officials? Evidently quite a lot.</p>\n<p>And by the way, the evidence is clear that the <a href=\"https://www.freemansperspective.com/elite-et-al-vs-trump-et-al/\">Russians did <strong>not</strong> hack the Democratic National Committee</a>.</p>\n<h3><strong>So…</strong></h3>\n<p>What this means is that the system – the dominating structure of our time – is fully committed to threat, fear, and war. Peaceful overtures are not acceptable.</p>\n<p>The high and mighty are drunk on power.       "body": "<html>\n<p><img src=\"https://www.freemansperspective.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/07/CrossIron-200x140.jpg\" width=\"200\" height=\"140\"/></p>\n<div style=\"line-height: 125%; font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 14px;\">\n<p>A few people remember President Dwight Eisenhower’s Farewell Address, where he warned Americans about the <a href=\"https://www.freemansperspective.com/military-industrial-complex/\">rise of a military-industrial complex</a>… a warning that was stunningly accurate and almost fully ignored.</p>\n<p>What almost no one remembers was Eisenhower’s speech in 1953, when he said that under the pressures of fear and war spending, humanity was “hanging from a cross of iron.”</p>\n<p>Bear in mind, this was said by Dwight David Eisenhower, five-star general who had been supreme allied commander. He was also the sitting president of the United States when he said it. So, there is absolutely no room for passing this off in the name of patriotism.</p>\n<h3><strong>Precisely What He Said</strong></h3>\n<p>Before I elaborate on this topic, I want you to read Eisenhower’s words for yourself. Here’s the core of Ike’s speech to the American Society of Newspaper Editors, on April 16, 1953:</p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">Every gun that is made, every warship launched, every rocket fired signifies, in the final sense, a theft from those who hunger and are not fed, those who are cold and are not clothed.</p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">This world in arms is not spending money alone. It is spending the sweat of its laborers, the genius of its scientists, the hopes of its children.</p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">The cost of one modern heavy bomber is this: a modern brick school in more than 30 cities. It is two electric power plants, each serving a town of 60,000 population. It is two fine, fully equipped hospitals. It is some 50 miles of concrete pavement. We pay for a single fighter with a half million bushels of wheat. We pay for a single destroyer with new homes that could have housed more than 8,000 people…</p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">This is not a way of life at all, in any true sense. Under the cloud of threatening war, it is humanity hanging from a cross of iron.</p>\n<p>Here’s one more line you should read:</p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">God created men to enjoy, not destroy, the fruits of the earth and of their own toil.</p>\n<p>Obviously this speech was widely ignored.</p>\n<h3><strong>The Cross of Iron</strong></h3>\n<p>“Iron” is a reference to war materials: planes, bombs, guns, tanks, and so on. And what’s crucial about this iron is that it is purchased with <a href=\"https://www.freemansperspective.com/taxes-price-of-civilization/\">money forcibly taken</a> from the productive people of the world. Added to that are not just the expenses of the smaller militaries, but dozens of now-gigantic intelligence agencies. (The US Department of Homeland Security alone spends $44 billion per year.) And so I think a reasonably accurate figure is closer to $2 trillion per year… and given many other expenditures, often cleverly hidden, even that figure may be low.</p>\n<p>This is properly a job for some young economist, but not having one handy, I’ll give you, in rough numbers, what that equates to:</p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">14,000,000 modern houses with amenities, or</p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">100,000,000 brand new cars, or</p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">a year of quality food and drink for 600 million people,</p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">and so on. Obviously the cost of cars and housing varies from place to place, but you get the idea.</p>\n<p>That’s what’s taken from us – <em>annually</em> – to build and operate machines of destruction. In just the past 20 years this would cover housing, transportation, and food for 150 million families… not counting the value of everything destroyed by the war machines.</p>\n<p>Can we call this anything but an abject organizational failure? To be very blunt about it:</p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">Humanity is producing far more than was ever dreamed possible by our ancestors, but we’re pissing it away on machines of death and destruction.</p>\n<p>And there’s a clear reason for this. But it’s a reason that can be hard to face.</p>\n<h3><strong>Forget Politics; It’s About the Structure</strong></h3>\n<p>We’ve been trained to devote all our passion and attention to political fights. In other words, to spend all our energies on ephemera that come and go like the winds.</p>\n<p>What we haven’t been trained in – what we’ve been diverted from – is the analysis of structures: the things that actually matter and the things that endure.</p>\n<p>The structures that dominate mankind are monopolistic, non-optional, and violence based. The central principle of their operations – the one they enforce thousands of times every day – is this: <strong><em>Do what we say or we’ll hurt you</em></strong>.</p>\n<p>However offended people may be at these statements, it will not be because they are false. Rather, they will be offended that such things are discussed. It’s not pleasant to face the fact that our world’s basic organizational structures are barbaric relics of the Bronze Age.</p>\n<p>These systems are offensive structures <strong>by design</strong>. They are built to extract money from large populations, to consolidate those takings in the seat of the operation, and to use that money to become more powerful than every other such system. And their 6,000-year track record most certainly bears this out.</p>\n<p>No one described this more honestly than Simone Weil, in <a href=\"https://www.amazon.com/dp/0802137296\" target=\"_blank\"><em>An Anthology</em></a>:</p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">What a country calls its vital economic interests are not the things which enable its citizens to live, but the things which enable it to make war… What is called national prestige consists in behaving always in such a way as to demoralize other nations by giving them the impression that, if it comes to war, one would certainly defeat them. What is called national security is an imaginary state of affairs in which one would retain the capacity to make war while depriving all other countries of it.</p>\n<p>The truth of the matter is that the ruling structures of our world are abject failures – relics of a brutal and ignorant past.
