But away from the courtroom, some survivors of one of the 20th Century's greatest horrors are ambivalent about the tribunal's legacy, reports George Wright from Phnom Penh. Like many 60-year-old men in rural Cambodia, Srei Than can often be found relaxing and drinking beer with friends outside his home. But when he locks eyes with Soy Sen, who lives a short motorcycle ride away down a dusty lane, he quickly looks away. "Whenever I see him, he walks away," Sen says. There's good reason for this. In 1974, when Sen was just 14, Khmer Rouge guerrillas took control of his hometown in Takeo province, to the south of the capital Phnom Penh. It was a year before they would topple the US-backed government and unleash a four-year reign of terror across the country. Sen was sent to Kraing Ta Chan prison by the radical communists. He believes it was down to his father being a local official in the district they had just captured. Upon entering the prison, Sen quickly realised the horrors that were unfolding there, including murder, torture and cannibalism. "I was climbing a palm tree in the afternoon and from the top I could see two children being taken away," Sen told the tribunal in 2015. "They usually waited for me to bring down the palm juice, but that day I heard… the sound of the cracking of children against a palm tree." Khmer Rouge leaders guilty of genocide More on Cambodia's brutal Khmer Rouge regime One of the most brutal guards at the prison was Than, better known by his alias "Small Duch". His namesake, a man known as Duch, ran the infamous Toul Sleng torture prison in Phnom Penh and was sentenced to life by the tribunal in 2012. He recalls an event that has stuck in his mind ever since. One day, Sen says, Than ordered him to clear up an area after he had just committed a horrific attack on two female inmates. "He was so cruel... he tortured me," Sen said on Friday. "One day he raped two women with an M-79 missile by putting it inside them."

But away from the courtroom, some survivors of one of the 20th Century's greatest horrors are ambivalent about the tribunal's legacy, reports George Wright from Phnom Penh.\nLike many 60-year-old men in rural Cambodia, Srei Than can often be found relaxing and drinking beer with friends outside his home. But when he locks eyes with Soy Sen, who lives a short motorcycle ride away down a dusty lane, he quickly looks away.\n\"Whenever I see him, he walks away,\" Sen says.\nThere's good reason for this.\nIn 1974, when Sen was just 14, Khmer Rouge guerrillas took control of his hometown in Takeo province, to the south of the capital Phnom Penh. It was a year before they would topple the US-backed government and unleash a four-year reign of terror across the country.\n\n\nSen was sent to Kraing Ta Chan prison by the radical communists. He believes it was down to his father being a local official in the district they had just captured.\nUpon entering the prison, Sen quickly realised the horrors that were unfolding there, including murder, torture and cannibalism.\n\"I was climbing a palm tree in the afternoon and from the top I could see two children being taken away,\" Sen told the tribunal in 2015.\n\"They usually waited for me to bring down the palm juice, but that day I heard… the sound of the cracking of children against a palm tree.\"\nKhmer Rouge leaders guilty of genocide\nMore on Cambodia's brutal Khmer Rouge regime\nOne of the most brutal guards at the prison was Than, better known by his alias \"Small Duch\". bodyI just checked out your blog. You appear to be new to SteemIt.com. This site has its own pace. First, you need to follow your account on SteemD. https://steemd.com/@allenjohn Everything is determined by the amount of STEEM POWER you have in your account. The system delegated 15 SP to your blog. An account with 15 SP can write only 12 posts over a 5 day time period. You consumed 40% of your resource credits with the barrage of posts you just put on the blockchain. An account with just 15 SP can average only two posts a day. If you want to write more, you need to buy more SP. There is a 15 minute curation window. It is best to leave at least an hour between posts. People tend to use their votes for networking. It is good to vote about 12 times a day. Good luck on SteemIt. Be sure to follow your resource credits on SteemD; otherwise you will find yourself unable to post. bodyI admit, I would be greatly confused by Julius Caesar quote as the term "trivial" has had different meanings throughout the centuries. Today people associate the term "trivial" with minor details. For example SteemIt sees the votes of small accounts as trivial and blows the trivial votes off as dust. Some would associate the trivial with trivia. Trivia are petty facts that fill our heads that only matter on Jeopardy and the Cash Cab. With this definition, Caesar's sentence would be: The trivial stuff that doesn't matter in life matters in war. In classical logic, trivial often meant related to The Trivium. The three legs of the trivium are grammar, logic and rhetoric. NOTE: mathematics still uses the term trivial in the classic sense. A trivial proof is a proof that flows readily from the axioms of a mathematical system. As Caesar would have received a classical education, I suspect that his definition of trivial would fall along classical definition. So the sentence might mean that the epistemological details presented in Trivium play a consequential role in war. Yes, I would have been caught up on the term "trivial" as the different definitions have a non-trivial effect on the meaning of the sentence.

bodyhttps://ichef.bbci.co.uk/news/375/cpsprodpb/4617/production/_104234971_kilogrammel.jpg Scientists have changed the way the kilogram is defined. Currently, it is defined by the weight of a platinum-based ingot called "Le Grand K" which is locked away in a safe in Paris. On Friday, researchers meeting in Versailles voted to get rid of it in favour of defining a kilogram in terms of an electric current. The decision was made at the General Conference on Weights and Measures. But some scientists, such as Perdi Williams at the National Physical Laboratory in the UK, have expressed mixed feelings about the change. "I haven't been on this project for too long but I feel a weird attachment to the kilogram," she said. "I think it is such an exciting thing and this is a really big moment. So I'm a little bit sad about [the change]. But it is an important step forward and so the new system is going to work a lot better. It is also a really exciting time, and I can't wait for it to happen."

More than 2,600 people signed an online petition over the "unfamiliar" word. The students were asked to write an essay based on the Julius Caesar quote: "In war, events of importance are the result of trivial causes." Examiners said the language used was expected to be within the range of the year 13 students' vocabulary. However, in a statement, the New Zealand Qualifications Authority [NZQA] added: "If candidates have addressed the quote and integrated their ideas with it, then they will be given credit for the strength of their argument and analysis and will not be penalised for misinterpreting the word 'trivial'." Chinese students flummoxed by 'unsolvable' exam question Sydney high school students hurt in syringe 'prank' School exam rules to be reviewed after cheat row It added: "There have been no changes as a consequence of the petition." The petition said the word had caused "much confusion" among the students who sat the exam on Wednesday. "The word which many students were not particularly familiar with meant that students had to write the essay based on their own understanding of the word," it said. The petition called on examiners to mark the essay based on the students' own definition of "trivial". In its statement, the NZQA said the question had been produced by experienced staff currently teaching history at that level. "When there are any unfamiliar words in any material for an exam, a glossary is provided," it said.

bodyhttps://ichef.bbci.co.uk/onesport/cps/480/cpsprodpb/14FD9/production/_104377958_ned.jpgThe Netherlands deservedly beat France in the Uefa Nations League to end the world champions' 15-game unbeaten run and relegate Germany. Liverpool midfielder Georginio Wijnaldum struck from close range after Hugo Lloris parried a Ryan Babel shot. Lloris made a host of top saves to stop a thrashing - but Memphis Depay's dinked penalty in injury time made sure of the win. ADVERTISEMENT A Dutch draw in Germany on Monday would see them win the group. That would take Ronald Koeman's side into next June's Nations League finals - at the expense of France, who had only needed a point in Rotterdam to seal top spot. The winners of each group are also guaranteed a Euro 2020 play-off place if they fail to progress from qualification next year. France can still win the group if the Germans, who will be in the Nations League second tier in 2020, beat the Dutch. Elsewhere, Gibraltar's Euro 2020 dream is almost certainly over after a 6-2 hammering by Armenia. The minnows led through teenager Tjay de Barr but Yura Movsisyan scored four times for the visitors.

bodyhttps://ichef.bbci.co.uk/news/320/cpsprodpb/FCC3/production/_104370746_gettyimages-102740424.jpg I watched from a distance as a chartered maroon and white plane from New York, carrying 10 Russian spies, parked on the runway at Vienna airport next to a Russian plane with four more agents on board. It was July 2010 and I was reporting on the biggest spy swap between Russia and the United States since the Cold War. It came as little surprise that Vienna had been chosen as the site for the largest exchange of secret agents since the Cold War. The city has a long tradition as a hotbed of international espionage, and it continues up to the present day. The latest case has come as a particular embarrassment to Austria.

After several months of training, a labrador and a labrador-retriever could tell if a child had the disease even if they were not showing symptoms. Prostate cancer In 2015, Italian researchers announced that they had trained two German shepherds to detect chemicals linked to prostrate cancer in urine samples. The dogs were correct in 90% of cases, while the standard PSA blood test is not considered reliable enough for screening. There is an ongoing study in Milton Keynes hospital NHS trust that aims to evaluate dogs’ abilities in a normal clinical setting. Diabetes Dogs are already used by diabetics to detect when their blood sugar levels are dangerously high or low. A charity called Hypo Hounds trains dogs to smell tell-tale changes on their owner’s breath or in their sweat. The pets can detect a problem earlier than a glucose monitor. Parkinson’s disease Researchers at Manchester University are attempting to train dogs to detect Parkinson’s disease years before symptoms emerge. The work is inspired by the work of a human “super-sniffer” who detected a change in her husband’s odour six years before he was diagnosed. Breast cancer Dogs are also being trialled at Buckinghamshire healthcare NHS trust for their ability to detect breast cancer. If dogs could detect this form of cancer from a woman’s breath it would allow more frequent screening; currently, women over 50 are screened only once every three years because of the exposure to radiation involved. Since you’re here … … we have a small favour to ask. More people are reading The Guardian’s independent, investigative journalism than ever but advertising revenues across the media are falling fast. And unlike many news organisations, we haven’t put up a paywall – we want to keep our reporting as open as we can. So you can see why we need to ask for your help. The Guardian is editorially independent, meaning we set our own agenda. Our journalism is free from commercial bias and not influenced by billionaire owners, politicians or shareholders. No one edits our editor. No one steers our opinion. This is important because it enables us to give a voice to the voiceless, challenge the powerful and hold them to account. It’s what makes us different to so many others in the media, at a time when factual, honest reporting is critical. If everyone who reads our reporting, who likes it, helps to support it, our future would be much more secure.

The research was conducted with colleagues from the London School of Hygiene & Tropical Medicine (LSHTM), the Medical Research Council Unit The Gambia at the London School of Hygiene & Tropical Medicine, and experts from a charity, Medical Detection Dogs. The charity has trained dogs to detect a variety of maladies, including prostate cancer and people at risk of slipping into a diabetic coma. The canine malaria detection work was supported by a Grand Challenges grant from the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, which is seeking, among other things, new ways of diagnosing the disease that are non-invasive and quick. New tools are urgently needed because, after more than a decade of dramatic reductions in malaria infections and deaths, over the last two years the world has experienced a slight increase in both. Lindsay said the experiment began in The Gambia where several hundred school children, who had been recruited to join the trial, were checked for overall general health, sampled for malaria parasites and fitted with a pair of socks that they were asked to wear overnight. The next day, the socks were collected. The socks were sorted according to the malaria infection status of the children who had worn them. Only socks from children with malaria who did not have fever were selected, as were the socks from the children who were uninfected. The socks were then shipped to the United Kingdom where they were stored in a freezer at LSHTM for several months while the dogs were trained. For the test, trained dogs had to distinguish between socks from children with malaria parasites and socks from uninfected children. They were trained to sniff each sample and to freeze if they thought they detected malaria, or move on if they did not. Using just the sock samples alone, the dogs correctly identified 70 percent of the infected children and 90 percent of the uninfected children. The researchers said the accuracy of the dogs was impressive and they were identifying malaria infected children with lower levels of parasites than required to meet clinical standards for rapid diagnostic tests set by the World Health Organization (WHO). However, in the future this work needs to be expanded with more samples tested from different parts of Africa. But Lindsay said the dogs' success rate actually might have been higher -- up to 78 percent -- if the children with malaria were all carrying the same type of parasites. As malaria infections progress, the parasite goes through several stages of development. And Lindsay thinks that when it reaches a certain stage of maturity, the odor it generates on human skin changes. Further testing revealed some of the children were carrying these more mature parasites. But the dogs were not trained to detect their odor. Moreover, the researchers pointed out that the success rate potentially could have been higher if the dogs were actually with the children or were working with socks that had been worn recently, instead of samples that had been frozen for several months while the dogs were being trained. However, Lindsay and his colleagues said their work was only designed to be a "proof of concept study" to show that malaria diagnosis by dogs is possible. They believe that with more training and more samples, the dogs could end up with an accuracy approaching a clinical test. Meanwhile, Lindsay noted that some of the existing clinical tests for malaria are suffering setbacks because mutant malaria parasites are emerging that no longer produce the specific protein those tests are designed to detect. As for putting malaria detection dogs to work in the field, Lindsay said they could be helpful assistants in a malaria elimination campaign that requires treating anyone in a village or community who is still carrying malaria parasites, including those who are not showing symptoms. Currently, the only way to address the problem of "asymptomatic" carriers -- who still can cause new infections by passing along their malaria parasites to the local mosquito population -- is to test or treat an entire community. Lindsay said detection dogs could be useful for, at the least, significantly narrowing the focus of clinical testing and treatment efforts. He said detection dogs would operate best at ports of entry into countries which eliminated malaria or are close to elimination. For example dogs could detect people carrying malaria parasites in southern Africa or in places like the East African island of Zanzibar, where efforts to eliminate malaria are complicated by a steady stream of visitors arriving from the mainland where malaria remains common. In addition, Lindsay believes training dogs to detect specific scents associated with malaria also could inform work underway to develop artificial 'electronic noses' or 'e-noses' that can diagnose diseases based on smell. Professor James Logan, Head of the Department of Disease Control, at the London School of Hygiene & Tropical Medicine, said: "Worryingly, our progress on the control of malaria has stalled in recent years, so we desperately need innovative new tools to help in the fight against malaria. "Our results show that sniffer dogs could be a serious way of making diagnosis of people who don't show any symptoms, but are still infectious, quicker and easier."

It made for an uncomfortable finish for Pochettino's side at Molineux but they hung on to climb above north London rivals Arsenal into fourth spot in the table. Pochettino refused to blame Foyth, who was starting in place of Davinson Sanchez. Colombia defender Sanchez was being rested before Tuesday's must-win Champions League Group B game with PSV Eindhoven at Wembley, but was sent on in the closing stages to strengthen the back line. "These things happen," Pochettino told BBC Sport when asked about Argentina Under-20 international Foyth's performance. "He is so young, it's his first game in the Premier League, I think he played well. He always tried to play and was relaxed and calm. I think his performance was very good and I am happy with him."

bodyhttps://www.sciencedaily.com/images/2018/10/181023130518_1_540x360.jpg A new study from Northwestern University has found some of the clearest evidence yet that animals can judge time. By examining the brain's medial entorhinal cortex, the researchers discovered a previously unknown set of neurons that turn on like a clock when an animal is waiting. "Does your dog know that it took you twice as long to get its food as it took yesterday? There wasn't a good answer for that before," said Daniel Dombeck, who led the study. "This is one of the most convincing experiments to show that animals really do have an explicit representation of time in their brains when they are challenged to measure a time interval." The research was published online this week in the journal Nature Neuroscience. Dombeck is an associate professor of neurobiology in Northwestern's Weinberg College of Arts and Sciences. When planning the study, Dombeck's team focused on the medial entorhinal cortex, an area located in the brain's temporal lobe that is associated with memory and navigation. Because that part of the brain encodes spatial information in episodic memories, Dombeck hypothesized that the area could also be responsible for encoding time. "Every memory is a bit different," said James Heys, a postdoctoral fellow in Dombeck's laboratory. "But there are two central features to all episodic memories: space and time. They always happen in a particular environment and are always structured in time." To test their hypothesis, Dombeck and Heys set up an experiment called the virtual "door stop" task. In the experiment, a mouse runs on a physical treadmill in a virtual reality environment. The mouse learns to run down a hallway to a door that is located about halfway down the track. After six seconds, the door opens, allowing the mouse to continue down the hallway to receive its reward. After running several training sessions, researchers made the door invisible in the virtual reality scene. In the new scenario, the mouse still knew where the now-invisible "door" was located based on the floor's changing textures. And it still waited six seconds at the "door" before abruptly racing down the track to collect its reward. "The important point here is that the mouse doesn't know when the door is open or closed because it's invisible," said Heys, the paper's first author. "The only way he can solve this task efficiently is by using his brain's internal sense of time." By using virtual reality, Dombeck and his team can neatly control potentially influencing factors, such as the sound of the door opening. "We wouldn't be able to make the door completely invisible in a real environment," Dombeck said. "The animal could touch it, hear it, smell it or sense it in some way. They wouldn't have to judge time; they would just sense when the door opened. In virtual reality, we can take away all sensory cues." But Dombeck and his team did more than watch the mice complete the door stop task over and over again. They took the experiment one step further by imaging the mice's brain activity. Using two-photon microscopy, which allows advanced, high-resolution imaging of the brain, Dombeck and Heys watched the mice's neurons fire. "As the animals run along the track and get to the invisible door, we see the cells firing that control spatial encoding," Dombeck said. "Then, when the animal stops at the door, we see those cells turned off and a new set of cells turn on. This was a big surprise and a new discovery." Dombeck noted these "timing cells" did not fire during active running -- only during rest. "Not only are the cells active during rest," he said, "but they actually encode how much time the animal has been resting."

And it still waited six seconds at the \"door\" before abruptly racing down the track to collect its reward.\n\n\"The important point here is that the mouse doesn't know when the door is open or closed because it's invisible,\" said Heys, the paper's first author. \"The only way he can solve this task efficiently is by using his brain's internal sense of time.\"\n\nBy using virtual reality, Dombeck and his team can neatly control potentially influencing factors, such as the sound of the door opening. \"We wouldn't be able to make the door completely invisible in a real environment,\" Dombeck said. \"The animal could touch it, hear it, smell it or sense it in some way. They wouldn't have to judge time; they would just sense when the door opened. In virtual reality, we can take away all sensory cues.\"\n\nBut Dombeck and his team did more than watch the mice complete the door stop task over and over again. They took the experiment one step further by imaging the mice's brain activity. Using two-photon microscopy, which allows advanced, high-resolution imaging of the brain, Dombeck and Heys watched the mice's neurons fire.\n\n\"As the animals run along the track and get to the invisible door, we see the cells firing that control spatial encoding,\" Dombeck said. \"Then, when the animal stops at the door, we see those cells turned off and a new set of cells turn on. This was a big surprise and a new discovery.\"\n\nDombeck noted these \"timing cells\" did not fire during active running -- only during rest. \"Not only are the cells active during rest,\" he said, \"but they actually encode how much time the animal has been resting.\"",

bodyhttps://ichef.bbci.co.uk/onesport/cps/480/cpsprodpb/16388/production/_104161019_leiecsterhuddlegetty.jpg Leicester City staff, players and fans were in tears as they held a minute's silence for their owner Vichai Srivaddhanaprabha, before their first match since his death. Supporters travelling to the game away at Cardiff City on Saturday started the day with a free breakfast and tribute t-shirt provided by the club, which many were seen wearing at the match. Fans unfurled a huge flag tribute to Srivaddhanaprabha, from Thailand, before kick-off and players wore their own t-shirt tributes to the man known affectionately as 'The Boss'. The Premier League match is the Foxes' first since Srivaddhanaprabha and four other people were killed in a helicopter crash outside King Power Stadium on 27 October. Manager Claude Puel has said the result in Cardiff is "not important" but forward Jamie Vardy said the players wanted to play at Cardiff so they can honour Srivaddhanaprabha.

Stephen Bennett says the trouble began when a crew member tried to wake him before takeoff. He says he was not allowed back on the plane despite airport paramedics saying he was fit to fly and an emailed note from his doctor. The airline says its crew acted appropriately given the circumstances. Mr Bennett, from Burnaby, British Columbia (BC), and his wife and son were on their way to Cuba and had a layover in Toronto on 13 October. WestJet Boeing 737-800 (publicity photo)Image copyrightWESTJET Image caption WestJet operates a fleet of Boeing 767 and Boeing 737 aircraft He says he did not sleep on the overnight flight from the westernmost province of BC and so took a sleeping pill prescribed by his doctor before the connecting flight. Mr Bennett, who is recovering from a stroke, boarded early and fell asleep immediately. He says he next remembers waking up when his wife nudged him and the flight attendant told him "he had to go" because he was a "medical emergency". He says there may have been some initial confusion because his wife's first language is not English and she wanted him to rest, but once he was awake he was able to explain he had taken medication. Paramedics were called and removed him from the plane in a wheelchair. He says they checked him once he was off the plane and told WestJet crew his vitals were fine and he was able to fly, but to no avail. He says he was also able to get his doctor to email a note saying he was healthy enough for the flight. "It was so humiliating," he said. "Basically, the stewardess became judge, jury and executioner." New Istanbul mega-airport opens Flight abandoned after bird strike The airline says that it cannot comment specifically on Mr Bennett's case due to privacy concerns. But it said that in any instance where its crew believes a passenger is showing signs of not being fit to fly, that passenger will be removed "out of an abundance of caution". It noted that those instances include "significant impairment arising from the consumption or use of alcohol or drugs prior to boarding". WestJet says that action is in line with federal transport regulations. The low-cost airline changing the way we fly Primera Air: 'I don't know what to do' "We stand by our crew's decisions and believe that what we have offered to this guest is reasonable under the circumstances," the airline said in a statement to BBC. The family, who had booked an all-inclusive vacation in Cuba, were told by WestJet they could take the next flight the following week, putting the rest of their package in jeopardy. Instead, they booked a flight with another airline, paying some C$2,000 ($1,525; £1,175) for the new tickets and for a hotel in Toronto. They also lost two days off the family vacation. "It threw a massive wrench into the happiness [of the trip]," he told the BBC. Mr Bennett says he wants compensation from the airline and an explanation as to why he was kept off the flight despite medical professionals saying he was able to fly.

bodyhttps://ichef.bbci.co.uk/news/375/cpsprodpb/18239/production/_104137889_img_5539.jpg A tiny oak tree emerges from a test tube in the laboratory. The seedling of the mighty oak has had an unusual start in life. Raised using techniques pioneered in fertility labs, it is the product of new efforts to preserve the seeds of wild plants. The world is losing plants at an unprecedented rate, with about one in five thought to be at risk of extinction. "It's an insurance policy against extinction in the wild," says Dr John Dickie of Kew's Millennium Seed Bank at Wakehurst in West Sussex. ADVERTISEMENT "In situ conservation, in a reserve, is always the best, because then evolution can happen all the time. This is a very cost-effective back-up in case that system fails." Oak treeImage copyrightGETTY IMAGES Image caption Oak tree in the countryside As a back-up in the event of doomsday scenarios such as war, seeds of crops and wild plants are being stored in bomb-proof, flood-proof, radiation-proof vaults. The goal is to store at least 75% of threatened plant species by 2020. But new predictions suggest this is unlikely to be achieved, because many seeds cannot be stored using conventional means. According to models published in the journal Nature Plants, 36% of critically endangered plant species, 33% of all trees and about 10% of medicinal plants fall into this category. "Not all the plant species can be banked in the way of dried seeds in the freezer like we do in the seed bank," says Daniel Ballesteros, who works on cryopreservation at the Millennium Seed Bank. "For example, we have the oaks and the chestnut that have desiccation-sensitive seeds and if we dry them, we kill them." Researchers are investigating techniques such as cryopreservation for these hard to store seeds, which include staples such as coffee, chocolate and avocados, as well as heritage trees like the oak. CryopreservationImage copyrightROYAL BOTANIC GARDENS KEW Image caption Cryopreservation relies on freezing plant embryos Cryopreservation involves removing the plant embryo from the rest of the seed, then freezing it at very low temperatures in liquid nitrogen. In this way, trees such as the oak can be stored for the future.

bodyhttps://ichef.bbci.co.uk/news/320/cpsprodpb/E5D3/production/_104153885_flags_getty.jpg The European Union plans to have a 29-strong team of diplomats in London to represent it after Brexit. It will be called a "delegation" - not an embassy - and will be part of the EU's foreign policy arm, the European External Action Service (EEAS). There will also be a mission with five staff in Belfast to oversee the implementation of the withdrawal agreement in Northern Ireland - if there is a Brexit deal. The plans will be discussed next week. They will be presented for approval by ambassadors from the 27 remaining EU countries on Wednesday. ADVERTISEMENT The European Commission has offices in all member states. Currently it has a team of 27 staff based at Europe House, in Smith Square, Westminster. Brexit: All you need to know Your guide to Brexit jargon Once the UK leaves the EU in March next year, that office will be replaced by a new London outpost for the EEAS. It will be about a third of the size of its equivalent in Washington DC, which has 90 personnel - although only 30 of them are classed as European diplomats. Whether the delegation will stay in the Smith Square building - the former headquarters of the Conservative Party - is not yet known. 32 Smith Square Image caption The EU moved in to the former Tory HQ in Smith Square in 2010 and renamed it Europe House However, the European Commission's offices in Scotland and Wales are likely to close. The new European Union ambassador to the UK will be appointed at a later date by its foreign policy chief Federica Mogherini. Being Brussels' man or woman in London could be a plum job, or the occupant could find themselves sidelined in future negotiations with London. Earlier this year, the European Commission denied that Martin Selmayr - its secretary-general and a former aide to its president Jean-Claude Juncker - was a potential candidate. The EU has 140 delegations to countries and organisations, including the United Nations and the World Trade Organization. Its External Action Service was established by the Lisbon Treaty to develop and deliver the EU's common foreign and security policy.

bodyhttps://ichef.bbci.co.uk/images/ic/208x117/p06qnx7h.jpg New Caledonia, the French islands in the Pacific, are due to vote on sovereignty on Sunday 30 years after a period of unrest. The territory, which has a population of 269,000, has seen deep divisions between its indigenous people, the Kanaks, and Europeans that live there. An agreement drawn up in 1988, the Matignon Accord, proposed an end to direct rule from Paris and a vote on independence in 1998. This was later postponed to the 2018 vote. Even if it’s a no vote, there is still the chance to call for two more referenda.

Cox, 28, was made the world's first professional female rugby referee in March 2016 when she earned a central contract with the Rugby Football Union. She was the first woman to officiate a second-tier men's game in England when she oversaw Cornish Pirates' meeting with Doncaster Knights in the Championship in March. Three other women will be part of the officiating teams in this round of the Premiership Rugby Cup with Claire Hodnett working as the television match official at Harlequins' meeting with Newcastle, Clare Daniels in the assistant referee role for Bristol's match against Gloucester and Danae Zamboulis acting as the citing officer for Leicester v Worcester. Former Ireland international Joy Neville became the first female referee to oversee a top-level men's match in the UK in February when she took charge of Ulster's win over Southern Kings in the Pro14.

bodyhttps://ichef.bbci.co.uk/onesport/cps/480/cpsprodpb/1633D/production/_104114909_arsenalbossunaiemery.jpg Every Arsenal fan sees Saturday's game against Liverpool as a marker - yes, the Gunners have made a great start under Unai Emery, but now we will find out how good they really are. I am sure the players will be thinking the same thing. I spent some time around them when I went to their training ground to interview midfielder Mesut Ozil last week and there is a real buzz about the club at the moment. The supporters are obviously excited too, because they like what they see. They have been singing "we've got our Arsenal back" and there is definitely a connection again between the fans and the team. Arsenal boss Unai Emery Emery has earned 22 points in his first 10 league games as Arsenal manager - the Gunners have only made a better start to the season on four occasions since they last won the title in 2004, and only once (2016-17) did they then fail to finish in the top four Emery has only been in charge for a matter of weeks but a little bit of expectation has already returned too. Arsenal's first two games of the season were defeats by Manchester City and Chelsea when nobody gave them much of a chance, but their form since has rebuilt some of the belief that had gone missing at the end of Arsene Wenger's reign. Have they got what it takes to beat Liverpool? My heart says yes, but I am looking forward to finding out.

bodyhttps://images.idgesg.net/images/article/2018/10/shutterstock_667831573-100776890-large.jpg The path to digital transformation remains murky, but one thing is perfectly clear: Intelligent use of data has the power to transform companies’ business practices for the better. Yet figuring out what data is pivotal and how to best manage and analyze that data will be the ultimate key to enterprise success. Companies have bought into the strategic value of data for unlocking insights that lead to higher customer satisfaction, improved products, even business process change that could save costs and drive operational excellence. A survey of 2,300 global business and IT leaders by MIT Technology Review Insights, in association with Pure Storage, found the lion’s share of respondents (87%) in agreement that data is central to delivering better results for customers or clients. Respondents also report that collecting data is important to business growth (87%) and that data is the foundation for making important business decisions (86%). While collecting, managing, and analyzing data is hardly novel, the kinds of data organizations are targeting and the way they aim to manage and mine that data for insights has dramatically changed. Most organizations have traditionally stored highly structured and very specific data (think orders and customer information) in some type of siloed data repository, giving access to trained business analysts who mined the data to produce monthly static reports. Contrast this with the variety and sheer volume of data collected today: The MIT Technology Review and Pure Storage survey found organizations tapping into a broad range of sources, including: 80% - data collected from customers in survey form 77% - data that has been input by customers 57% - Internet of Things (IoT) data from sensors, cars, mobile phones, etc. 72% - passive data Bringing these different data types together, most hailing from different parts of the organization or from external sources, remains a substantial challenge, only exacerbated by the fact that data is now being generated at breakneck speeds. In fact, 78% of survey respondents said they were struggling with how to digest, analyze, and interpret the current volume of data, and 81% said that obtaining and analyzing more data at even greater speeds will be a challenge in the future. The key to success It’s next to impossible for traditional data management architectures and solutions to keep pace with the data deluge let alone provide the means for mainstream users to benefit from intelligent insights. Therefore, to deliver on the promise of a data-driven enterprise, companies need to reevaluate their data management platforms and data governance policies. They also need to embrace new technologies, from automation to intelligent storage architectures, to create a new foundation specifically designed to unify siloed data types while emphasizing real-time data sharing and delivery, not just data storage. Data may be the new currency for business success, but without a strategy to effectively harness data and transform it into active intelligence, companies will spin their wheels and miss the opportunity for competitive advantage.
