bodyHiya mate. I'm really enjoying hearing about your adventures - you are also a very good/mature writer for such a young age too! I bet your dad really enjoys sleeping with Molly in his tent.....lol. Sounds like you had a bit of bad luck with the car.....and the midges......and the rain.....lol. It's all part of the adventure and sounds like you're having fun with your camera anyway. Always remember that anybody who doesn't make mistakes, doesn't make anything btw - it's how we learn and get better at things. I like this diary style of post and I'm looking forward to see your photos in your next post maybe? Keep up the good work and enjoy the rest of your holiday mate. Followed and upvoted.

bodyIn all seriousness, I'd say NO. I believe porn/gambling should be treated differently because they are different "animals" to all other content. I think they bring with them unique issues and potential legal hazards to the platform. I see "pick games" as the tip of the iceberg and next we'll be having the same conversation about whether "tic tac toe" is gambling or not and there will be no resolution. I would propose that 2 separate entities/sites/browsers whatever are created instead. These would be offshoots like "Steembets" and "Steemporn" sites. I agree that there is a lot of potential profit in this type of thing that should go towards developing this community. I would say Steemit should do this ASAP before somebody else does.

bodyInteresting post, On the other hand though, I would say that conflict, heated debate and controversial topics are all things that create engagement, attract users and ultimately help the growth of Steem. I totally agree that we need to welcome all, however I disagree on the gambling/porn aspect. It's not that I'm not OK with it per se, just that I think it needs it's own browser, separate from the main Steemit site. This is because these 2 particular things can bring various problems along with them. I'd have a Steemporn and a Steembets site to keep things separate myself. BTW, "Ginormous" is not a real word - the correct terminology is "Humongous".....lol

bodyYours is an interesting perspective too, I have some difficulty applying the analogy of guns and shooting to the actual Network and the mechanics of this due to lack of tech knowledge. Maybe if I just work through your post mainly keeping to the real world and see how it goes. There are some major differences though, such as no physical borders online, so some things that would work online would not translate/work in the real world. Due to this I may find myself objecting to things on the grounds they wouldn’t work in the real world, when in fact they could online. I would say that in an ideal world neither govt nor anybody else would have guns. However, we live in a world with borders and security of the populace from invasion and such is a legitimate concern. It’s interesting that you mentioned property rights earlier because it is quite pertinent to this conversation. Property rights originally stem from whoever uses the land. If we take the UK as an example, the inhabitants can’t defend their borders without working together and paying for an army etc. If an invader was successful, then they would have the property rights – in order to protect our property rights we end up with a representative Govt given the consensus of the majority to raise an army. The army has the guns, directed by the Govt, who in turn are given this right by the population. I don’t see this as an un-balanced situation, it’s not ideal but a needs must situation. I’d say it is only unbalanced if the Govt has guns without the consensus of the populace. The ideal situation to me would be to do away with Govt functionality/powers insofar as that is possible and de-centralise things as much as possible, bearing in mind what I’ve said, there are certain areas where for practical purposes we need some form of centralised entity. We still need governance even without Govt though. While I’m thinking about it, your argument about representative Govt would also seem to apply to the way the witness system works? One thing I would change is the way political parties set out their various stalls/manifestos for the population to vote on which one to choose. I would tde-centralise this so that the population agree on an agenda then employ a “Govt” to carry out that agenda, along with the ability to sack that Govt for gross misconduct for not carrying out the populations wishes. I would also ensure that all public funds/Govt meetings etc are put on some kind of Blockchain for transparency. This would also be useful for tax purposes…..OH NOES….I mentioned the “T” word…..lol. I’d say that the idea of a community pot to pay for infrastructure and care of the weak and vulnerable is a good thing. The main objection seems to be that money is spent on things that people don’t want it spent on. Again, if this is de-centralised and everybody given a choice on where to spend it for the good of the community as a whole then I think it’s a good thing. Having pondered the upvote/downvote/flag situation some more I have come to the conclusion that we do indeed need all 3. The main issue I see now is around conflict resolution and I suggested a Court of peers randomly picked each week. This would work in conjunction with a time delay before rewards are paid. The “accused” could be found algorithmically I think, There would be no central authority and no people in position for more than a week, thereby negating fears of corruption. Users click the “agree to terms” and Bob’s your uncle, you’re covered. Any claims of force being used would be illegitimate as people can decide not to agree in exactly the same way people have the choice to join any society/community or not. Anyway, just my thoughts, cheers.

bodyI'm absolutely fine with your first paragraph, it's just that we have identified a number of issues with the current implementation, this is indisputable I would say. The argument appears to be that things will level out over time. I believe we do not have that time because it appears to be the same argument used to defend current Capitalist society; that the 1% will benefit the 99% by the "trickle down effect". This has been clearly shown to not be the case as wealth is concentrated more and more to the top 1%. I believe this effect is currently being played out, and that this will lose our user base before any theoretical trickling occurs - this is my concern. "I think that those who are against down votes don't like the feeling of punishment that comes with them. Whether something is theft or not depends upon the consensus of property rights." I'm against down votes because it doesn't appear to work on top of this reason. The consensus of property rights could be provided by the consensus of the community in the Court/delayed payment model I sketched out, but the main point is that the larger community confers these rights.

bodyIt is clear that your perspective in life is one where "guns should be banned" but I bet you believe "government should have guns". This creates an unbalanced system in itself, but perhaps what you really want is a system where the guns are put in the hands of people who are up voted. Perhaps only the top N people by total approval voting should have the power to down vote. This kind of representative government would suffer the same problems that our governments suffer today. The people who are given power do not pay the price for their abuse of power. The worst that happens is they get voted out. The current system is unbalanced, but only because people can shoot from behind a shield where they cannot be hurt. People will stop shooting as soon as they risk retaliation. You don't go into a bar full of armed people and shoot someone unless you are sure everyone else in the bar is on your side. Gun crime is only a problem if people can "get away with murder", if the probability of getting caught and shot yourself is high enough then you will behave. Unlike the use of guns, the network has the ability to "heal" those who are shot and compensate them for the abuse they suffered from the less civilized among us.

body“Fighting corrupt behavior in a subjective world means that actions have consequences. Any action without consequences will be abused by a minority if they can gain even a small benefit.” Ok, I’m beginning to get re-assured… “The most basic consequence is a loss of reputation of an individual user.” But the issue we are encountering is that due to abuse, the wrong people are losing reputation due to what amouts to smear campaigns using the flagging system. “A community consisting of mostly good people can fight of an infection of anti-social individuals hoping to get something for nothing, but only if they have the power to deny rewards or claw it back.” We don’t appear to have this power and shunning doesn’t work “Overall the community will be more civilized if there is properly balanced tit-for-tat.” But there isn’t and this seems to be where relying PRIMARILY on game theory has become an issue. Yes game theory is a very valuable tool, but it appears you are assuming a level playing field which is not the case. If someone has a huge stack of chips while the rest only have a few, then what is the most likely outcome? The outcome we are seeing unfold before us I’d say. The argument that the 1% benefits the 99% by the “trickle down” effect is shown to be false in modern Capitalist societies – how is it going to be any different by placing the word “Anarcho in front of it? “Banning Down Votes is like Banning Guns” Great….then ban down voting! “They will use their guns to secure privatized profits at the hands of those without guns.” This sounds great in theory, I live in the UK – how many deaths by gun occur in the US compared to the UK? You would implement a theory even if it caused many actual human lives lost? Now I know this, I fully understand why you would implement anything if it was aligned to your particular ideology or theory even in the face of overwhelming evidence to the contrary and even if it caused serious harm to others….very, very concerning “I am a proponent of non-violent solutions” But you would implement a system whereby everyone is armed so the likelihood of violence is greater, the evidence is that there would be more deaths, but the more important thing is that you’ve stuck by your ideology? “ An armed society is a polite society” –Heinlein Hardly surprising! Great if the ultimate goal is politeness and etiquette, nevermind the body count though eh? I’d prefer people spoke their minds and had freedom of speech without fear of being shot for being fucking rude… “If the rules favor corruption” They currently do…… “….and don't provide tools to fight it” They currently don’t…. “….then eventually everyone (including the good people) will become corrupt.” Brilliant…..job done then eh? Just to exercise my freedom of speech and to be deliberately rude - I have never read such a load of bollocks in all my life.... so shoot me!

bodyI got as far as the 2nd paragraph, then realized I had to clarify something before reading the rest and commenting further: "The real goal is to eliminate "punishment" because no one likes to be singled out for punishment. Punishment also "divides" us and many people perceive it as an act of violence against one individual." Is it the case that any solutions in regard to the upvote/downvote/flag conundrum have to be in accordance to this anarcho-Capitalist ideology? If so I then I believe it is very likely insoluble. Is Steemit to be run along these very niche ideological lines? I'm asking because if we want Steemit to go mainstream then you have a very serious problem. If so, how broad is your concept of "punishment" cover. Does it cover things such as returning ill gotten gains from gaming the system and such like? If so then to all those who say "Tax is theft" are you OK with "Theft is Tax" because those that thieve are a tax on others.

bodyReplying to latest post here: "The reason to do this is even if you have moderators, they are human, with bias and eventually they too will abuse their position." I totally agree and not suggesting moderators. However just to say that if these were voted in and could be voted out, then it appears to be exactly the same argument as for witnesses. "Moderators ultimately do not seem to be the answer either. You end up with places they are moderating becoming their subjective kingdoms." Agreed. "People should never be getting downvoted/flagged for opinion. We don't need that. Yet how do we insure that is the case?" I would say the only way to ensure this is to remove both flagging and downvoting, then deal with the 1 remaining problem of upvoting, rather than 3 problems. Perhaps we are looking at the problem arse upwards?

That generally is someone that is Libertarian that eventually decides that ultimately we don't need rulers. That is all fine and dandy, but how do you implement that in code. That is tricky. The reason to do this is even if you have moderators, they are human, with bias and eventually they too will abuse their position. So how can you fix this? It is NOT an easy problem, or someone likely would have already done it, yet that is the position that Steemit is in and trying to think of solutions. bodyInteresting and thanks for the info - I know nothing about coding btw or even what an SJW is. So what I'm getting from this is that it is possible for a bot to deal with spam and plagiarism, at least to a degree. The main nub of the flagging issue though I think, is that there seems to be absolutely no point in having such a system without moderators. A flag is used to draw someone's attention to it, then make a subjective decision - something a bot can't do. A flag in and of itself, should have absolutely no impact on a post, it is a neutral thing as no decision has been made yet. This seems to be the nub of this issue. So, who makes the decision in lieu of any moderators? I would say the community should. I think that this, as someone else said is going to require some out of the box thinking. I think I'll just make some suggestions for others to "pick the bones out of" to get the ball rolling, not fully thought out ideas necessarily requiring feedback. I think what has been created here has been built around similar not fully thought out ideas, probably based on Libertarian principles. This is fully understandable, however Libertarianism is an untested ideology on this kind of scale. Personally, I'm Libertarian only insofar as my Liberal principles allow, I see many unworkable aspects to this ideology and would maintain that we are seeing them play out here in a "survival of the fittest" way. There can only be one outcome in this environment, a kind of Capitalism on steroids. We need to keep the ideologies out of this and as far as possible make it equitable for all users. What we have here is a Wild West situation with no law and order......I suggest we introduce some. I expect that the Libertarians among us first response would be to fight against authority, however if that authority is de-centralised to all users, then this complaint disappears. It already has been accepted that we have a kind of Liberal representative governance in the way the witnesses work. I believe we will actually eventually end up creating such a model here as it appears to be the most equitable and has an inevitability about it. We have plenty of carrots, but no stick......this is a major concern and the root of our troubles I think. The community already votes for witnesses to perform a particular community task, so how about we introduce a Court system and the community vote for the jurors? The evidence against the worst offenders can be presented transparently in one place. I would suggest that there are terms introduced to expect users to submit to the Court of their peers. So what about restitution or fines, how would we go about that? Off the top of my head I would suggest that rewards are not immediately paid out but that there is a waiting period of a few days, if nobody brings a case against you then you get paid out, if they do then you await judgement. I believe the reward pool is a separate pot which is paid out weekly - can this be done like this weeks rewards go to last weeks authors? Is it possible to code this? Lol, anyway, I said it was outside the box.....maybe it will stimulate other ideas and thought processes?

bodyThat's brilliant with the drinking....remember that it is a very slippery slope with an inevitable outcome. Sounds like things haven't progressed too far along the slope yet so that's great news. Your thought patterns appear to be the main issue. Try to forget all the what if's and when you catch yourself thinking this way try to do something to distract yourself. The thing you are describing is anxiety and your negative thoughts feed on themselves and tend to spiral out of control. This can lead to panic attacks which from my experience feel like your hearts racing with an accompanying very strong feeling of impending doom. There are some treatments such as using anxiolytics or anti- depressants but if you can do without then I would. Again, understanding the physiology of anxiety/panic attacks is a good way to learn how to deal with it. It is basically the body's "fight or flight" reflex being triggered without any actual threat being present. Try to take your mind off things by keeping busy and your mind occupied and also learn relaxation techniques. Just take baby steps, give yourself a pat on the back for the 4 days, reward yourself, don't dwell on feelings like guilt, low self worth etc. No ! - Don't beat yourself up with all the "I should be's" - its the worst thing you can do, trust me. You are a worthwhile human being, no less than ANYBODY else, value yourself, love yourself and keep re-enforcing these thoughts until eventually you will believe it and rid yourself of the negative thoughts. Think about how your wife is still with you, she must see the real you behind the curtain, think of the life ahead of you with your children. You have a wonderful life ahead of you once you get through this period. Sorry if I sound a bit preachy.....I'll leave you alone now. Look after yourself.....seriously, everything else will follow. bodyUnfortunately while what you described was not simple, it is still not even that simple. >I'm just thinking that this is a case of a few bad apples; For now yes. Yet we want this platform to grow and more people to join. What happens when a rich jerk buys a bunch of steem power and goes to town? What happens when a SJW manages to get a lot of power or just a lot of SJWs and they go to town flagging ? What happens when people get angry at a person and start intentionally flagging all of their posts without reading them? What happens when someone else flags all of another person's posts for RETALIATION for flagging? These types of things tend to happen in other places with a down vote. There is no reason to assume this would not eventually happen here as well. Whales are only the problem NOW because when one of them down votes something it can be like a giant kicking a peasant and sending them flying across the room to smash into the wall. As far as bots. They are also doing a service. Without them things got out of hand very fast. They are not all bad. Programming an effective bot can be tricky. There are times they will false flag, make mistakes, etc. The Cheetah bot is actually pretty effective. It does make mistakes, but if you let @anyx know he will typically correct those. Before Cheetah it became almost impossible to curate for awhile due to the sheer amount of garbage posts posted by what appear to be bots themselves on an almost every 5 minute basis. This is also why the 4 posts per day thing was implemented so if anyone DOES spam post like that they will fairly quickly lose the rewards of doing so without a bot. You also don't see many "Watch this video to see how you can work from home and make $20,000 per week" ad posts because things like Cheetah deal with that. > “i have created, for myself a practice i call flag mining. i spend at least an hour a week finding flagged posts and seeing what's in them. normally if i see something flagged, i just move on. sometimes, paying deliberate attention to only flagged posts has yielded some interesting results. i can see patterns in what gets flagged out of opinion. i also get to see which whales chronically misbehave. sometimes i just find cool posts.” That is an interesting approach. Have you considered writing a post as kind of a flag report and highlight the posts that seem to have been flagged simply for opinion? Some of us might like that. It may be too late to fix it for the 24 hour payout but perhaps we can get it some payout from the 30 day payout. It also might help people start to learn patterns without having repeat the laborious process you are already doing. >Is it not possible to publish on site the instances of flag/downvote instances? Maybe the top 100 by damage done to the reputation/potential earnings etc? Just as all the other steemtools.com tools were made, something like that could likely be made. >Can this be done algorithmically so that at least the larger community would be made aware of the larger abusers? I think this could help motivate the 99% to address the abuses of the 1%? Would the threat of thousands of minnows attacking the main abusers have a positive effect? The 99% would then have the power to make their own minds up and help redress the balance. The consensus of the majority would then play out, rather than the minority. Hard to say. It is worth considering and if someone wishes to make such a tool we might be able to see what can be done with it.

bodyThank you for your words of encouragement and advice @alkafir. I am currently on day number 4 of being sober. I have not had to take medicine for withdrawals. I have managed to stay sober for months at a time and even once for a little over a year and a half. My stinking thinking tells me...What if you do all this again and then fail down the road again miserably? However, I keep telling myself that I have to do this. This could be my last chance. The three things keeping me motivated right now are my wife and 2 children.

bodyNice post and the comments reveal the trickiness of the problem. I'm just thinking that this is a case of a few bad apples; the vast majority of the community would like to be able to address the abuse. I think a large part of the problem is that most are unaware of who the culprits are in order to even mobilise themselves into action against it. Can I just summarize where I think we are to help break things down and simplify the issues from what I’ve read: 1. We currently have 2 problems of abuse, the upvote and the downvote systems 1. The downvote system is only in place to mitigate the abuses of the upvote system. 2. The upvote system is only mainly abused by whales and bots. 3. The whales and bots are the problem. 4. Solve the whale and bot problem, then downvote can be removed. Is this correct? I’m not a techie so please bear with my ignorance but is it not possible to totally ban/impede bots? Can we not have some kind of unique human thing attached to the voting mechanism? I’m probably guessing not, as I’m pretty sure someone would have thought of it, but thought worth asking. Secondly the whale problem; the above post by @lifeworship gave me some clue as to how we might go about this: “i have created, for myself a practice i call flag mining. i spend at least an hour a week finding flagged posts and seeing what's in them. normally if i see something flagged, i just move on. sometimes, paying deliberate attention to only flagged posts has yielded some interesting results. i can see patterns in what gets flagged out of opinion. i also get to see which whales chronically misbehave. sometimes i just find cool posts.” Is it not possible to publish on site the instances of flag/downvote instances? I think this could help motivate the 99% to address the abuses of the 1%? Would the threat of thousands of minnows attacking the main abusers have a positive effect? The 99% would then have the power to make their own minds up and help redress the balance. The consensus of the majority would then play out, rather than the minority. Just a few top of my head thoughts…..
