The plant is native to warm-temperate,\nsubtropical and tropical regions in the world with over 200\ndifferent varieties in the genus. Member species are often\nnoted for their showy flowers and are commonly known\nsimply as hibiscus , or less widely known as rose mallow .\n\nThe genus includes both annual and perennial herbaceous\nplants, as well as woody shrubs and small trees. The generic\nname is derived from the Greek word hibískos, which was the\nname Pedanius Dioscorides (ca. 40–90) gave to Althaea\nofficinalis.\n\nHibiscus is a popular ornamental plant, as the brightly-\ncoloured flowers tend to attract butterflies, bees and\nhummingbirds to the garden. They can be planted individually\nor grown as a hedge or border plant in the garden. Plant\nHibiscus in full sun.\n\nFun flower facts about the Hibiscus:\n• The flower is edible and has a tangy citrusy taste.\n• Dried hibiscus is considered a delicacy in Mexico.\n• The roselle (Hibiscus sabdariffa) is used as a vegetable.\n• Certain species of hibiscus are also beginning to be used\nmore widely as a natural source of food coloring (E163), and\nreplacement of Red #3 / E127.\n\n• Approximately 15-30 percent of the hibiscus plant is made\nup of plant acids, including citric acid, malic acid, tartaric acid\nand allo-hydroxycitric acid lactone — i.e. hibiscus acid, which is\nunique to hibiscus. Other chemical constituents are many;\nhowever, some of the most important include alkaloids,\nanthocyanins, and quercetin.\n\n• Many countries from around the world use hibiscus to make\nteas and other tasty beverages. Hibiscus tea contains vitamin C\nand other minerals.
