      "body": "In an October, 2017 article for The Washington Post, statistician and former writer at FiveThirtyEight Leah Libresco wrote that once upon a time, she was pro-gun control.\n\nShe used to support “common-sense” gun control legislation that would ban “assault” weapons, restrict suppressors (also known as silencers), and even shrink magazine sizes. Then, she started to look into the data in order to figure out which policies would actually make a difference.\n\n![](https://steemitimages.com/DQmcEMSoaakyuLvoCsuxu2fEZW2tBmew8nozSHYJdSRfkKd/image.png)\n\nShe said that broad-based legislation isn’t going to solve the problem, but that targeted, small-scale interventions at victim and perpetrator levels might be more beneficial.  Gun violence is a symptom of more serious pathologies that gun control cannot solve. Libresco eventually discovered that no restrictive measure would actually have prevented the 33,000 gun deaths she analyzed.\n\nIf the real data related to gun deaths in America was made available and people were able to put two and two together on their own, perhaps more of us would get to the same conclusions that Libresco reached. But, news outlets spin the news. They also misinterpret the news. Sometimes, willingly. Sometimes, simply because they don’t know any better and because mass shootings are extremely emotional topics and responses are fear-driven. The result is an explosive cocktail of misinformation that often leads to bad policies and yes, more gun deaths.\n\nIn an article also from last year, economist Ryan McMaken explained that gun death rates tell a very misleading story.\n\nBecause news outlets like to keep it “simple,” they will focus on national gun rates. But the United States is a large country with states that are as diverse and unique as they are (somewhat) independent. Each state has its own set of gun restrictions and laws. And as expected, each state has a different homicide rate. When analyzed independently, McMaken demonstrates, we are able to tell a very different story.\n\nThe nationwide homicide rate in 2016, the FBI reported in 2017, was at 5.3 per 100,000 while in 2015, it was 4.9 per 100,000.\n\nBut when you look at individual states, homicide rates ranged from a low of 1.3 per 100,000 in New Hampshire while in Louisiana, they ranged from 11.8 per 100,000.\n\nGun policies primarily restrict the freedom of law-abiding citizens, and they ignore the real issues and reasons that are likely to coincide with gun violence—mental health, gang activity, drug abuse, and poverty—to name a few.\n\n***\n\nOriginally published [here] (https://www.theadvocates.org/2018/02/gun-control-frenzy-national-homicide-rates-dont-tell-whole-story/).",

      "body": "Electricity is a product just like gas and water.  The provision of these products to the consumer should be made available by private companies that specialize in making sure their customers are happy.\n\nWhen services like these are seen as “rights,” they end up being provided by the government, or government-granted “natural” monopolies, and that’s when individuals lose access to such products,. They suffer the consequences without having any actual right to complain.\n\nThat’s the current situation in Puerto Rico, where the supply of electricity is controlled exclusively by politicians and bureaucrats in government.\n\nAs a “right,” like other government-provided products and services, electricity comes at a hefty price. After having to wait more than four months to be able to freeze their food, watch TV, or use their computers in the wake of Hurricane Maria—which forced 40 percent of the island’s inhabitants to live without power—a group of private citizens from San Sebastián decided to take matters into their own hands by restoring power to their own municipality.\n\nMayor Javier Jiménez could not wait for the Puerto Rico Electric Power Authority or the Army Corps of Engineers any longer. So first, he made a list of people in the town who were electricians. Lining up a group of city employees which included former utility employees, the mayor started bringing electricity back to the town.\n\nIn no time, the Pepino Power Authority—the group of volunteers who decided to no longer wait for the government—were working on fixing electric lines on their own. They first started with downtown lines and then continued working their way out to the hills surrounding the city.\n\nBut as they stood up for their own people, the government accused them and the mayor of circumventing the state’s monopoly and of putting people in danger.\n\n“One of the first things we did,” Jiménez says, “was establish a safety protocol, and we brought in a government inspector.”\n\nDespite the resistance the mayor and his group of volunteers have encountered, they have already restored power to the majority of the city, volunteer Joaquín Cruz said. But the goal is to restore it to 100 percent by the end of the month.\n\nIn the meantime, other mayors are still waiting for the government to send them help.\n\nWhile this lesson will be lost on most people, it is, nonetheless, a great example of how governments cannot and are unable to provide to the populace as efficiently and as humanely as the private market can and does. Allowing competition to enter the field by giving independent electricity firms the opportunity to provide the best, safest, and most affordable service would be a superior long-run solution to Puerto Rico’s power grid and its people, especially low-income and poorest consumers.\n\nAs Puerto Rico proves yet again, when governments ignore economic laws and start claiming that goods and services are “rights,” people will begin expecting them for free.  And wherever governments step in to meet a demand while simultaneously lacking the necessary price mechanisms and profit motives, chaos and inefficiency are all but guaranteed.",
