| body | “The most terrifying force of death, comes from the hands of Men who wanted to be left Alone. They try, so very hard, to mind their own business and provide for themselves and those they love. They resist every impulse to fight back, knowing the forced and permanent change of life that will come from it. They know, that the moment they fight back, their lives as they have lived them, are over. The moment the Men who wanted to be left alone are forced to fight back, it is a form of suicide. They are literally killing off who they used to be. Which is why, when forced to take up violence, these Men who wanted to be left alone, fight with unholy vengeance against those who murdered their former lives. They fight with raw hate, and a drive that cannot be fathomed by those who are merely play-acting at politics and terror. TRUE TERROR will arrive at these people’s door, and they will cry, scream, and beg for mercy… but it will fall upon the deaf ears of the Men who just wanted to be left alone.” –Alexander Solzhenitsyn |

| body | If the Canadian Freedom Convoy has even just thus far (at the time of this writing) taught the world anything, it is that governments are only interested in power, and control. Trudeau and the parliament have made zero concessions, zero attempts to negotiate with the people whose rights they allegedly exist in the first place to protect and secure (a ludicrous, false, and self-contradictory idea on its very face to begin with). They obviously have no intentions whatsoever of admitting that they were wrong, that they’ve lied, that they’ve mandated Covid-19 vaccinations, masks, and lockdowns purely in the name of profit and power. All they have done, in fact, is to issue threats and warnings which all amount to the same thing: Go back to obeying us unconditionally, or we’ll make you sorry you didn’t. None of this is about health, safety, order, or “serving” the public. It’s only purpose is: We are your bosses. We own you, you pathetic slaves. Our police and our military are poised to beat you back into submission. Obey...or else. I am cynical enough to believe that this entire Canadian movement, now inspiring similar revolts around the globe, will eventually pass and end with no real fundamental changes. Trudeau and the parliament will stay in power, a few martyrs will serve prison sentences, and/or be fined into poverty for the rest of their lives, and tyranny will continue as it always has. This cycle of acquiescence – which has repeated itself time without fucking number throughout history -- must be broken. Somehow. It must end. I believe both Canada, and humanity, have come to this. I believe it is time. Canadians do not have a Second Amendment like Americans do, but they still have guns. Lots of them, in fact. Wouldn’t it be glorious if instead of eventually capitulating and conceding to that little communist faggot of a priminister and his parliamentarian allies – and the cops and soldiers who do their dirty work – the Canadian people decided to French Revolution those motherfuckers once and for all? Wouldn’t that send the best and final message to the entire planet: Fuck this – we’re done. Not just with this shit government, but with all of them. With the whole idea behind it. Fuck your mandates – ALL of them: Your taxes, your codes, your demands of obedience. We prefer firing squads, lynchings, and guillotines instead. Around the fucking clock, 24/7. Until every last one of you have been completely disposed of. Without exception. And then we’ll see just who tells who what to fucking do. You won’t have any choice but to leave us alone, once you’re nothing but a pile of lifeless, rotting corpses. Yes, that would be glory in the ever-fucking highest. Will it happen? Canada? Ball in your court. Play to win. |

| body | UPDATE -- July 18, 2018: The following e-mail was sent to David Zuckerman: Mr. Zuckerman: Below is a statement that has been credited to yourself: " (T)he reality is that the paid law enforcement and fire departments are regulated by the elected leaders. They collect the costs (taxes) and distribute them (salaries and vehicles etc.) as they see best for the community. It is "socialized" cost for the benefit of all even if some never use the services. One can rationalize how that is not a socializing of the costs of something that not everyone will use. But it is socializing the cost no matter how you put it. And it is taking control away from the individual who is paying for it by collectivizing the resources for the general good. So really, it is simply a matter of deciding which of these services should be socialized or born by the individual. We seem to have decided that defending our land is better done through a national military (against other nations/states) and a local police force rather than each protecting our own without a collective force. We have also chosen to do that through our volunteer and professional fire fighters. Even the volunteer firefighters generally rely on tax dollars collected from everyone for their equipment (trucks, clothing, hoses, building etc.) And I think these are all good things. But without socializing the costs to everyone how well would they work in modern society? We also socialize the costs for mental health. A portion of the society needs those services, but we generally feel that for all of our well-being and many feel for the well-being of the person receiving services, that it is better to collectively pay in even if it (selfishly) does not appear to help the self. The reality is that all of these are socializing the costs for the benefit of the whole society more than the individual. It really is just a matter of collective decision making as to which aspects of society do we want to socialize the costs. For instance, we are also socializing the costs of water pollution for the benefit of the few. Less so today than in the past, but basically a corporation used to be able to dump toxics into surface waters (or aquifers for that matter), and not be responsible for that. It was up to all of us to treat the water or clean up the water. We also socialize the cost of sports team stadiums. The fact is, we do it all the time. It is simply a matter of who is deciding what we do it for." I would be interested in knowing to whom you refer when you use the pronoun, "we." Certainly, I can confirm that I have neither taken part in, nor consented to take part in, any of the activities you describe here. Respectfully, Alex Knight |

| body | It’s tempting to blow all this off as a single, insignificant incident in a small town. It isn’t Los Angeles’s Rampart, after all. Or Chicago’s systemized torture. But it also isn’t unique. There’s a steady stream of stories like this one. I was alerted to this particular story by a former police officer who now advocates criminal-justice reform. (He asked me not to use his name, for reasons that will be apparent in a moment.) I asked him: In his experience, how common is this sort of thing? His response: This is very common in policing. Looking back on my career, I realize just how often I acted similarly and didn’t even realize it. It was subconscious. I was trained and subtly incentivized to do so. You intentionally create conflict and manufacture noncompliance in order to build your stop into an arrest situation. Because that’s what generations of law enforcers who have been steeped in a fear-based, comply or else, us-vs.-them mind-set do. They arrest people. Arrests are a primary measure of productivity and gives the appearance your department has solved a problem. Most aggressive cops have honed this to an art. They are savvy, know exactly how to weaponize numerous petty laws, ordinances, use-of-force policy and procedure against citizens. This cop was off his game and clumsily went through the motions like a desperate door-to-door perfume salesman. Except when cops manufacture a “sale” like this, the “customer” ends up arrested, criminalized, emotionally and financially devastated, not to mention possibly physically beaten or worse. And the justice system will deem it legal, even when it isn’t. As far as the police leadership and prosecutors, they knew exactly what they were doing. If someone makes a complaint, you find something, anything to charge them with. Finley wasn’t shot, or choked to death, or found hanging in a jail cell. He didn’t suffer any permanent or lasting physical injury. Mercado didn’t even use racist or bigoted language. But Finley did everything he was supposed to. From the footage we can see and hear, he was polite, provided ID when it was asked of him and stepped out of the truck when ordered. Despite cooperating, he was treated poorly, detained and roughed up. When he then tried to file a complaint, he was harassed, and the chief of police attempted to turn his own wife against him — by citing video she hadn’t seen and that ultimately vindicated her husband. Yet even after viewing that video, city officials proceeded to prosecute. And even after the video was released, city officials maligned Finley in the press and insisted that the residents of Walnut Ridge believe the assertions of authority figures over the video evidence that contradicted them. The “lesson” Finley learned here is pretty clear. Power usually wins. You can be as cooperative as possible, but if a police officer wants to dish out some abuse, he can. And he’ll probably get away with it. Try to hold him accountable if you’d like, but just know that doing so may come with a heavy price. Once other public officials cover up for “bad apple” cops, the story is no longer about the bad apples. It’s about systemic failure. It’s about public servants willing to tolerate abuse because they’re more loyal to one another than to the public they serve. It’s difficult to say how someone in a position of authority — someone with the public trust — could view footage of the encounter between Mercado and Finley and proclaim they believe that the criminal charges against Finley were merited. Perhaps they were just lying. Or perhaps they were so blinded by deference to law enforcement, a fear of accountability or a knee-jerk defense of authority that they actually believe what they’re saying. I’m not sure which of those scenarios ought to worry us more. https://www.washingtonpost.com/news/the-watch/wp/2018/07/10/an-arkansas-man-complained-about-police-abuse-then-town-officials-ruined-his-life/?utm_term=.766b4291c21f |

| body | UPDATE: January 30, 2018 RE: PROPOSED CHANGES TO VERMONT FIREARMS LAWS Dear Vermont Legislators: As I am unable to attend this hearing in person today, I am submitting this written testimony in lieu, and hope that you will accord it the same weight as the spoken word. I will begin by further stating that were I physically present, I would be wearing orange and standing in solidarity with members of the Vermont Federation of Sportsman’s Clubs, Inc., Gun Owners of Vermont, and the numerous other gun rights, hunting, and shooting sports organizations across Vermont – in addition to the thousands of other gun owners across the Green Mountains. The facts are relatively simple. We have before us three bills -- they are H.422, S. 221, and S.6. One of these (S. 6) seeks to create a universal background check requirement for all firearms purchases, and the other two propose to create conditions under which someone accused (not convicted in a court of law!) of a domestic violence incident may “temporarily” have their firearms confiscated by law enforcement until proven innocent! In fact, here is a description of these latter two especially pernicious pieces of proposed legislation, courtesy of Gun Owners of America: “At its core, section 4054 would allow a policeman to go into a ‘secret (or ex parte) hearing’ and obtain an order to strip you of your constitutional right to keep and bear arms. Under section 4052(c), proceedings could be conducted in Montpelier, even though your residence is in Brattleboro. “In this ‘secret hearing’ -- from which you and your side of the story are barred -- if police can prove by ‘clear and convincing evidence’ (a relatively low standard), that you are, like 257,000 veterans, an ‘immediate and significant danger’ to yourself, you will be stripped of your constitutional rights.” I should think that my opposition is shared by many on the basis of the fact that it is a flagrantly unconstitutional seizure of lawfully-owned property without due process. After a secret hearing! And I find it unconscionable that any legislator could support this measure in the face of such facts. There is inherently nothing “safe” about an alleged “safety” precaution or supposed “preventative measure” which bases itself upon manifest violations of fundamental individual rights. Someone accused of a crime must be first proven guilty via full due process before they can be deprived of property. That is the very basis and underpinning of American jurisprudence. The equation is really that simple. As to the issue of UBC’s, I have two primary objections: 1.) It will artificially and substantially escalate the cost of a firearm sale or transfer by as much as $50 per transaction. This, even standing alone, is unacceptable. 2.) Although Lt. Governor Zuckerman and other have denied repeatedly their desire to create a firearms registry, the naked fact remains that universal background checks are meaningless and unenforceable without one. UBC’s are quite clearly, in spite of glossy rhetoric to the contrary, a precursor to the establishment of a statewide gun registry. Such an abomination would, following the passage of universal background checks into law, remain only a short matter of time. I will conclude with the obvious: Vermont, with its traditional absence of draconian gun laws, has been and remains consistently among the top 3 safest places in America, and most often statistically #1. This is because widespread and unimpeded ownership and carrying of firearms, counter to the cries of gun control proselytizers, discourages and deters crime. The old adage, “An armed society is a polite society,” fits Vermont quite well. I will also add, in brief, that it is appalling to me that the advocates of these gun control measures have characterized themselves as “grassroots” Vermont residents exclusively, when it is obvious at even the most cursory glance that much of the financing and organization behind them extends from outside of Vermont – to be specific, various anti-gun rights initiatives bankrolled by former New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg. In fact, even GunSense Acting Executive Director Clai Lasher-Sommers is a resident of Chesterfield, New Hampshire – not Vermont. This is an outrage. I repeat my adamant and unilateral opposition to H. 422, S. 6, and S. 221. None of these bills should be considered fit to become law. Rest assured that I, and thousands of other concerned Vermonters, will be watching closely the actions of each individual legislator with respect to these ill-conceived proposals this election year, and in all of those to come. Most Sincerely, Alex Knight |

This is because widespread and unimpeded ownership and carrying of firearms, counter to the cries of gun control proselytizers, discourages and deters crime. The old adage, “An armed society is a polite society,” fits Vermont quite well.\n\nI will also add, in brief, that it is appalling to me that the advocates of these gun control measures have characterized themselves as “grassroots” Vermont residents exclusively, when it is obvious at even the most cursory glance that much of the financing and organization behind them extends from outside of Vermont – to be specific, various anti-gun rights initiatives bankrolled by former New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg. In fact, even GunSense Acting Executive Director Clai Lasher-Sommers is a resident of Chesterfield, New Hampshire – not Vermont. This is an outrage.\n\nI repeat my adamant and unilateral opposition to H. 422, S. 6, and S. 221. None of these bills should be considered fit to become law. Rest assured that I, and thousands of other concerned Vermonters, will be watching closely the actions of each individual legislator with respect to these ill-conceived proposals this election year, and in all of those to come.\n\n\nMost Sincerely,\n\nAlex Knight",

| body | Thanks Alex. I wish there were some kind of posthumous poetry contest I could submit some of these to. I love that photo, too. It was taken when my dad worked at J.C. Penney in Tampa, in the piece goods department. He selected the fabric for the ridiculous bell bottoms he's wearing from his stock, and paid an elderly neighbor lady to sew them. |
