The greatest miner in sub-saharan Africa is from Kenya. The guy has been featured in many tech companies and news portals like Bloomberg and CNN, just to name a few. It's a lucrative business with the right hardware. |

| title | COULD BITCOIN BECOME THE FIRST PAN-AFRICAN CURRENCY? |
| body | Bitcoin is the world’s first truly global currency that anyone can use to make payments and transfer funds. In Africa, bitcoin has so far been growing primarily in South Africa, Kenya, Nigeria and Ghana and is currently being used mainly as an investment and for private international remittances. But does it have the potential to become the first pan-African currency? Bitcoin, as currency, has many attractive features that feed into the argument that bitcoin will establish itself as the leading global currency and, thereby, also as the first pan-African currency. - Anyone with Internet access can use bitcoin - Bitcoin is not controlled by any government or central bank - Payments and money transfers take less than 30 minutes - The cost of a bitcoin money transfers is minimal - Transactions are transparent as they are publicly recorded on the blockchain - There is a fixed supply of bitcoins, so hyperinflation cannot occur
BITCOIN REMITTANCES IN AFRICA
While, in theory, bitcoin remittances make sense in Africa the reality is that there is the (partly) costly challenge of exchanging the received bitcoins into local African currency. For this reason, bitcoin remittances are currently not the cheapest way to remit funds into Africa, according to a report by US bank Citigroup. However, as exchanges are expanding and the bitcoin economy is growing in Africa, bid/offer spreads will tighten and bitcoin remittances will become a viable way to transfer money across borders at a low cost. Money remittances to sub-Saharan Africa, mostly sent from members of the diaspora working abroad, are expected to rise above US$41 billion by the end of 2016. It is estimated that remittances in Africa account for a country-by-country average of 5% of GDP. Established players such as Western Union and MoneyGram have traditionally been the favored remittance services used to send money to Africa from abroad, and between African countries. However, these services come at a substantial cost – the average charge of sending money to Africa being 12 per cent of the value of the transaction – the highest in the world. This is one of the key reason why so many people in the bitcoin economy believe that bitcoin will succeed in Africa, as the costs of cryptocurrency-based remittances are substantially lower than using the before-mentioned expensive traditional Money TransferOperatorss (MTOs). So far, consumer bitcoin remittances into Africa have only really taken place on a small scale but as the bitcoin infrastructure improves in Africa, the trend for bitcoin remittances will undoubtedly be positive.
BITCOIN AS A STORE OF WEALTH AND AS A SPENDING CURRENCY
Once bitcoin volatility reduces (which arguably will take quite some time) bitcoin will very likely become a viable store of wealth. Furthermore, as merchant adoption increase both globally and in Africa (as seen in South Africa), Africans will be able to use bitcoin as means of payment across the continent. The reality is, however, that it will take a substantially amount of time for this to occur. In fact, bitcoin adoption correlates to some degree with Internet penetration in Africa. It is not surprising that the countries with the highest Internet penetration are also those spearheading bitcoin adoption on the continent. As affordable access to the Internet spreads in Africa, so will bitcoin as a store of wealth, a means to transfer money and as a spending currency. To answer the question in the title of this article: YES, bitcoin could become the first pan-African currency. This could occur once internet penetration reaches the majority of the continent and global bitcoin adoptions increases, to the extent where it becomes globally recognised as legal tender. Whether that will happen or not, remains to be seen and, if it does, it will take a long time. | body | Hey jmagochi! Due to the high cost of mining equipment (relative to the average income in Kenya) and the lower rewards that bitcoin mining is reaping at this point, minig isn't really "a thing" here. I haven't met anyone yet who is mining any cryptocurrencies in Kenya. But I will ask my bitcoin friends here. Now that you mentioned it, I am curious too. :) |

| title | 5 Things I Learned About Bitcoin In Kenya In My 2 Months Here |
| body | Since July 15th I have been living and working remotely in Nairobi, Kenya and I intend to stay here for several months more. During the time I have spent here so far, I have managed to meet several local bitcoin pioneers and have attended a small bitcoin conference in the center of Nairobi. In this brief post, I would like to share with you five things I have learned about bitcoin in Kenya.
1. Bitcoin merchant adoption is effectively zero
According to CoinMap, there are less than five merchants accepting bitcoin in Nairobi and zero in other parts of Kenya. The merchants that say they accept bitcoin are online travel booking companies and small tech companies. Not a single bricks and mortar shop accepts bitcoin in Kenya (yet).
2. Mobile money rules but that hinders bitcoin adoption by consumers
In Kenya there are two forms of mobile money, which have been launched by the two large telecom companies. Airtel and MPesa, with the latter seeing the higher usage rates. The way MPESA works is that you load Kenyan Schillings (KES) onto your MPESA mobile wallet at a local agent (of which there are plenty) and spend using your mobile phone through a simple text message-like service. While it is great to see mobile payment systems flourishing and promoting financial inclusion in rural parts of the country, it also makes using bitcoin mobile wallets for payments effectively redundant as a fully functioning mobile payment system is already in place in Kenya.
3. The largest telecoms company and mobile money provider, Safaricom, does not like bitcoin
Last year, Safaricom shut down BitPesa's access to their MPESA mobile wallets that allowed users to send international money transfers from bitcoin into local currency directly into MPESA mobile money wallets in Kenya. BitPesa went to court to appeal this decision. Unsurprisingly, given Safaricoms dominance in Kenya, BitPesa lost. This is likely the primary reason why bitcoin trading on LocalBitcoins.com has increased since December 2015.
4. Bitcoin trading volumes on LocalBitcoins.com in Kenya are on the rise in 2016
While bitcoin trading volumes have been very slow to grow from 2013 to the end of 2015, 2016 has seen a substantial increase in peer-to-peer bitcoin trading in Kenya. (https://coin.dance/volume/localbitcoins/KES)
5. There are currently only three bitcoin businesses in Kenya
The three business are the well-funded remittance start-up BitPesa, the Bitcoin & Blockchain accelerator hub BitHub Africa and the Bitcoin advisory firm UmatiBit. |

| title | Should You Invest In Peer-To-Peer Microfinance Loans? |
| body | Microfinance refers to a type of banking service that provides financial services to low-income individuals or groups who otherwise have no other access to financial services. It gives them an opportunity to become self-sufficient by providing savings, loans, and insurance. In this post, we will discuss the viability of investing in peer-to-peer microfinance loans as an investment opportunity. Microfinance loans are a bridge for people with limited resources to become more entrepreneurial and productive. Most of these people are small business owners. And in most cases, they are locked out of credit brackets by banks. Microlenders give out loans in small amounts (often $100 to $250 per loan) to allow small business owners in developing countries to buy inventory or small machinery to increase their productivity and grow their business. Peer-to-peer microfinance lenders want to give individuals in the developing world the opportunity to directly lend to these type of individuals and small business.
Zidisha
Zidisha is one of the first online microlending platforms and has been of great help to many small entrepreneurs in the developing countries it services. It directly connects lenders and entrepreneurs without a local microfinance intermediary in between. Zidisha offers a person to person lending platform that lets lenders and entrepreneurs interact and communicate openly. Many of the young adults in developing countries are now online. They have varied skills and knowledge though they lack the resources to live up their ambitions. Most banks within their reach charge high interest rates or don’t lend to them at all. But through Zidisha, many young entrepreneurs now have access to the funding they need to start or grow their small businesses. African BusinessAn entrepreneur with funding needs can apply for a loan on Zidisha. Potential private lenders then get to read about the business and its funding need and can decide to chip in to fund the loan request. Once the loan is fully funded, the entrepreneur confirms acceptance and it is disbursed to him or her. From there on, the lenders and borrowers can communicate directly using the discussion tab found on each of the loan profile. The entrepreneur will make his or her repayments monthly or weekly and they are credited directly into the lenders’ Zidisha account.
MyC4
MyC4 is another online peer-to-peer microfinance lender. An entrepreneur in a developing country with a financial need visits a local MyC4 partner and presents his need i.e. how much money and how much he can pay in interest. The MyC4 partner makes a thorough evaluation of this business and makes a decision to make sure that it has the potential for growth and repayment. If it is approved by the MyC4 partner, it is uploaded to the MyC4 marketplace where other investors read about it and invest in it. With MyC4, there’s normally an auction where investors bid the amount they can lend and at what rate. The lenders offering the lowest rates win the auction and end up lending to the individual. Unfortunately, MyC4 has ceased to take on new investments due to issues it has with a local microfinance partner in Kenya. “At the moment it is, unfortunately, not possible to sign up or bid on loans as an investor on MYC4. This is due to MYC4’s decision to take a Timeout for uploads of new loans to borrowers in Kenya following a major dispute with one of our Provider partners in Kenya, KEEF, who have wrongfully decided to neglect their obligation to repay a large amount to MYC4 investors. Until this situation has been normalized there will consequently be no Kenyan entrepreneurs benefitting from a loan through MYC4 and it makes no sense to allow existing or new investors to upload money which cannot benefit an African borrower. We apologize for this circumstance and hope to be able to restart lending activities soon again.”
Kiva
Kiva is another peer-to-peer microfinance lender. However, it is a charity and not a return generating lender. Just like Zidisha and MyC4, a borrower applies for a loan. The loan then goes through underwriting and approval process and once approved it is posted to Kiva for lenders to invest in it. Lenders crowd fund the loan on increments of $25 or more and once complete, the borrower is given the funds. The borrower repays the loan and the lenders use the repayments to fund new loans, donate or withdraw the money.
Should you invest in peer-to-peer microfinance loans?
Peer-to-peer lending is a viable and useful tool for the empowerment of small business owners. However, in my opinion, the peer-to-peer microlending ecosystem is currently still too small to invest large amounts (as scalability is a big issue for peer-to-peer microlenders) and there is too much risk involved for it to make financial sense. Furthermore, if the microlending platform is using local partners the issue of corruption is too high and too prominent (as seen by MyC4s issue in Kenya). Hence, I would currently not recommend investing in peer-to-peer microfinance loans. However, if you are keen on empowering people in developing countries, then investing small amounts in microfinance loans as opposed to local peer-to-peer loans or corporate bonds is a viable option. But the intention has to be wanting to give as opposed to making an investment with the expectation of strong returns. I originally posted this article on my personal finance blog http://www.smartmoneysmartliving.com |
