      "body": "Facebook’s profits soared 61%, spurred by growth in mobile users at the end of last year, the company announced on Wednesday, as co-founder Mark Zuckerberg said 2017 had been one of the company’s more difficult years as a public company.\n\nZuckerberg has vowed to fix the issues at the social network, including concerns it was used as a platform for Russian meddling in the US elections. Facebook was also criticised over censorship and the addictive qualities of social media.\n\nZuckerberg said: “Twenty-seventeen was a strong year for Facebook, but it was also a hard one. In 2018, we’re focused on making sure Facebook isn’t just fun to use, but also good for people’s wellbeing and for society.”\nHe said the company was doing this by “encouraging meaningful connections between people rather than passive consumption of content”.\n\nFacebook faces intense pressure to address issues on its platform. On Wednesday top Democratic lawmakers demanded more details from the company and Twitter about the extent to which Russian bots were being used to push stories on their platforms. In particular the lawmakers want to know the extent to which foreign actors have been involved in pressing for the release of a controversial memo alleging abuse of power by the FBI.\n\nThe company’s share price fell close to 5% in after-hours trading even as Facebook announced figures for the last three months of 2017 that were broadly in line with analysts’ expectations. The fall appears to have been caused by fears that the changes Zuckerberg intends to make will slow growth and reduce people’s engagement with the service.\n\nOn a call with analysts Zuckerberg said: “The world feels anxious and divided and that has played out in Facebook.”\n\nHe said the company was moving away from “passive” consumption of news and video and wanted to build more personal connections between its users. The changes might lead to a drop in the time people spent on Facebook, he said. But content such as viral videos was crowding out personal connections and “helping people connect is more important than maximising the time spent on Facebook”.\n\nFacebook’s revenues topped $12.7bn for the quarter and the company made a profit of $4.26bn – once again demonstrating the company’s dominance in social media advertising. The social platform will capture 18.4% of the $266bn global digital ad market this year, according to eMarketer, making it the number two ad publisher behind Google, which has a 31.3% share.\n\nFacebook’s operating profits would have been $7.35bn except for a $3.19bn tax charge, most of which stemmed from the Trump tax overhaul.       "body": "Elon Musk’s Tesla Roadster, which launched on top of SpaceX’s Falcon Heavy on Tuesday, is going farther out into the Solar System than originally planned. The car was supposed to be put on a path around the Sun that would take the vehicle out to the distance of Mars’ orbit. But the rocket carrying the car seems to have overshot that trajectory and has put the Tesla in an orbit that extends beyond the Red Planet’s path. However, the Tesla won’t be making it to the asteroid belt, as SpaceX CEO Elon Musk originally claimed.\n\nAfter launch, the Tesla cruised through space for a good six hours — a trip that was also live-streamed by SpaceX. This “coast” phase was meant to show off a special orbital maneuver for the US Air Force, before the rocket completed one final engine burn in space and put the car on its final orbit. It looks like that burn might have happened somewhere over Southern California, as some people in the area started reporting sightings of the rocket igniting in the night sky after 9:30PM ET on Tuesday.\nNow it seems that engine ignition worked a little too well. Musk originally tweeted out a map on Tuesday of what was thought to be the Roadster’s final orbit after the burn, showing just how far out the car would travel. And it looked like the Tesla would go out into the asteroid belt, getting relatively close to the orbit of the dwarf planet Ceres.\n\nBut astronomers online noticed some discrepancies with the numbers Musk tweeted, and SpaceX ultimately sent a revised orbit to NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory on Wednesday (You can find it by selecting “target body” -143205.) The new orbit shows that the car will indeed travel farther out than the orbit of Mars, but not far enough to make it to the asteroid belt. The belt begins about 329 million miles from the Sun, and the Tesla will reach a distance about 160 million miles away from the Solar System’s star.\n\nBefore the Tesla launched, Musk said that there was an extremely tiny chance that the vehicle would ever hit Mars, and that seems to hold true. Within the next decade, the roadster will make its closest approach to Mars in October of 2020, coming within 4.3 million miles, according to Jonathan McDowell, an astrophysicist at Harvard and spaceflight expert. He also figured out the next time the Roadster gets “close” to Earth is in March of 2021, when it passes within 28 million miles of our planet.\nThe Tesla’s journey certainly demonstrates the Falcon Heavy’s capabilities of putting objects into deep space. The idea that the rocket could send things to the asteroid belt is likely to be attractive to some space companies, like Planetary Resources and Deep Space Industries, which are working on technologies to mine water from asteroids someday. But even though the Roadster won’t be venturing into the belt, it will still overshoot the orbit of Mars, which is good news for scientists looking to send vehicles to the Red Planet some day.",
