| body | Thank you so much for sharing this amazing post with us! Have you heard about Partiko? It’s a really convenient mobile app for Steem! With Partiko, you can easily see what’s going on in the Steem community, make posts and comments (no beneficiary cut forever!), and always stayed connected with your followers via push notification! Partiko also rewards you with Partiko Points (3000 Partiko Point bonus when you first use it!), and Partiko Points can be converted into Steem tokens. You can earn Partiko Points easily by making posts and comments using Partiko. We also noticed that your Steem Power is low. We will be very happy to delegate 15 Steem Power to you once you have made a post using Partiko! With more Steem Power, you can make more posts and comments, and earn more rewards! If that all sounds interesting, you can: - Download Partiko Android at [Google Play](http://bit.ly/2SRFIta) - Or Download Partiko iOS on the [App Store](https://apple.co/2PcXkSd) Thank you so much for reading this message! |

Vermintide II End Times: Vermintide (the first one) was anything but revolutionary, but it sure was damn fun. Basically Left 4 Dead but in the Warhammer universe. Vermintide II only improves on that, and fixes the issues the first one had with loot drops. My only complaint was that the "skills" that you unlock are slow to come. ###### 9. Detroit: Become Human I'm a sucker for an engaging story with some fun dialog and good choice trees. So I really enjoyed David Cage's latest outing. I know I'm in the minority, but hey, it's my opinion, shut up. ###### 8. Lance A Lot Imagine riding a rocket with a lance, and jousting with other people. It's an absolute riot with 4 people playing locally. The over-the-top soundtrack and hard-to-control rockets add to the fun instead of detract from it. ###### 7. Uncharted 4 Some of the best storytelling in Video Games. As with previous games, the gunplay combines with the climbing seamlessly and makes for some amazing moments where you have to thing vertically. The climbing segments drag on sometimes, but never terribly long, and never cease to amaze with setpieces. Uncharted 4 was better than most movies I saw this year, and it makes the list because its gameplay is sublime too. ###### 6. HITMAN IO Interactive has redeemed themselves after the train wreck that was Hitman: Absolution. It has open-ended sprawling levels that are filled to the brim with interesting happenings that you can take advantage of. The levels feel alive, and the reuse for additional content doesn't feel repetitive. ###### 5. Mario Tennis: Aces My wife and I have had so much fun with this game. It's our new go-to game when we want to have some fun. Normally she's not as good at games as I am, but with the addition of an AI that's somewhat competent, but messes up, she can hold her own with me by being strategic, and hedging her super-moves on certain plays. I didn't realize how deeply strategic and fun a Tennis Game could be. It plays like a fighting game complete with special and super moves. For my full review: [click here](https://steemit.com/gaming/@alavan/review-mario-tennis-aces) ###### 4. Dead Cells Dead Cells is one of the only Roguelike games I've truly enjoyed. The combat is sublime, streamlined, easy to control, and makes you feel like a badass. There's no unfairness (well, maybe except when you're trying to use a shield). Dead Cells is a near-perfect game. Incredibly well-executed, everything is a challenge, nothing is trivial, but it has a very nice difficulty curve. It plays a lot like Dark Souls, except fast paced and side-scrolling. When you die, it's sort-of am "oh, well", let's see what weapons I can find next run", or maybe "ah, well at least I can go try that other way". I'm also intrigued by the atmospheric story, and want to discover more about what happened on this island. ###### 3. God of War This game is proof that a large adventure game can be successful without being loaded with microtransactions. And not only was it very successful, it is incredibly good. Mark Brown did a great [video](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vwbz9gxoQFg) on the weapon used in God of War, the Leviathan Axe, and it illustrates how much polish and game design prowess is in this. The story and the back-and-forth between Kratos and the "boy" only add to the amazing setting and story to tie you along towards each fight. This is one of the few games that I never felt bored playing, was completely satisfied at the end, yet still wanted more after it was over. ###### 2. Super Mario: Odyssey If you've been wanting a game like Super Mario 64 since 1996, this might be able to scratch your itch. It goes back to the collecting of stars (moons in this case) from open sprawling levels on a globe-trotting adventure around the mario-themed globe. The great part about this is that you still get the intense challenges like bosses to earn moons, but those net you 3 moons at a time, while there are smaller puzzles and hidden moons scattered around the whole level. Each one feels well-crafted, polished, and unique. It also introduces enough new mechanics to feel fresh and new. 2019 is going to be the year I pick this back up and get all of the moons. ### Game of the Year: ###### 1. The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild This game was the Game of the Year 2017 for many people, but I didn't own a Switch until 2018, so here it is. I didn't know how this game could possibly be good enough to end up on so many game of the year lists (especially after the disappointing Skyward Sword), but now I get it. Like Super Mario: Odyssey, there's so much to do, and it all feels polished. The one mechanic that absolutely makes this game is the climbing system. See that mountain? You can try to climb it, if you have enough stamina. Oops, you fell, better wait until you've leveled up your stamina. People complain about the weapon durability system, but I felt like it encouraged you to use different weapons, and it didn't bother me much. The ominous nature of the villain, as well as the characters that drive the story in small cutscenes serve to further improve the atmosphere of the game. If this is the way Zelda games will be for the foreseeable future, bring them on. |

2019 is going to be the year I pick this back up and get all of the moons.\n\n### Game of the Year:\n###### 1. The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild\nThis game was the Game of the Year 2017 for many people, but I didn't own a Switch until 2018, so here it is. If this is the way Zelda games will be for the foreseeable future, bring them on.\n\n",

| title | 2018 Gaming Recap (The Good, the Sad, and the Ugly) |
| body | # A 2018 Gaming Recap Before I get to my top 5 games of the year, let's go through some interesting things that happened in the world of Gaming in 2018. As well as my enjoyable, and not-so-enjoyable games of 2018. ## The good ##### Fortnite becomes a global phenomenon Many of you are sick of hearing about Fortnite, but when a game becomes so big, Jimmy Fallon and the Astros are doing "Fortnite Dances", that is a good thing. The more gaming is accepted, the less Fox News can call it a blight on society. It's instances like this that have made gaming the mainstream activity it is today. No longer are adult gamers relegated to the "mom's basement" stereotype. It'll be interesting to see what the Fortnite generation of kids grow up to make. We're just now seeing how the Minecraft generation is getting along, and Fortnite is the natural evolution. ##### No microtransactions in several very successful titles God of War and Spiderman went on to sell millions of copies, make millions of dollars, and had zero microtransactions whatsoever. I wonder if there is some alternate universe where these titles did have lots of microtransactions, and I wonder if it made more or less money. ##### The Nintendo Switch sets massive records and continues to be a huge success After the failure of the Wii U, Nintendo seems to have corrected course. ##### The game awards A lot of people like to shit on The Game Awards, but after watching I can't really say that it's a bad show. Sure, there are more advertisements and "world premieres" than actual awards, but isn't that what the Oscars is too. If this is what we have to do to have the "Oscars" of Video Games, I'm completely OK with it. The selection process is straightforward and not convoluted, and it's not a popularity contest. I would love a studio to be able to be introduced as "Game-award-winning studio" like we have "Acadamy-award-winner/nominee". ##### The first video game developers union in the UK We have the first attempt to unionize game developers in the UK. It's completely optional, and at this point, basically a subscription for legal representation when working conditions deteriorate. It's a good start and it'll be interesting to see where it goes. ## The Sad ##### John"Totalbiscuit" Bain dies of cancer at age 33 This year, the gaming world lost one of its biggest advocates. I personally never met TB in person, but I still felt like I knew him, and I know many feel the same way. As passionate as he was British, John left a lasting impact that forever changed the way we look at games. ## The Ugly ##### Fallout 76 What a mess this game was. Launched in a buggy nigh-unplayable state, Fallout 76 has had one bad story after another. They even screwed up the collector's editions and sent people cheaper items than they were promised. Jeff Gerstmann even said he would not review the game because he didn't want to slog through a boring, dull game enough to review it. ##### EA decides to break Belgium's laws As some of you know, Belgium recently decreed that loot boxes are gambling, and thus, subject to gambling laws, meaning that they must be removed from video game products. Companies like Activision-Blizzard and 2K did so begrudgingly, but EA decided they just *couldn't* remove the loot boxes from their games. They claim they don't actually break the law and are now being investigated by the Belgium authorities. ##### PUBG sues Fortnite In the most petty "you stole our idea" suit ever, the developers of Player Unknown's Battlegrounds, ever unhappy that Fortnite became a greater success than their game, decided to sue Epic Games for "copying" PUBG with Fortnite. If you don't know about this, it would have been like if Nintendo sued Sega back in the 90s because Sonic was a platformer and Mario came first. ##### Filip Miucin's Dead Cells review IGN fired one of its critics for plagiarizing a smaller Youtube-channel's review of Dead Cells. ##### Billy Mitchell is labeled a cheater, world records of Donkey Kong and PacMan revoked The King of Kong, Billy Mitchell, Accused and Confirmed to be using an emulator instead of the real machine, has had his records revoked. If an emulator is used, there are subtle differences, and it can't be confirmed he wasn't using a virtual programmed player. So until he achieves his high score using an actual arcade cabinet, he's off of the board. |

| title | XSLT-HTML: A new way to do your server-side UI framework |
| body | # A case for a simpler, easier-to-maintain UI #### But what is an XSLT? It stands for Extensible Stylesheet Language Transformations. And it is a programming language that eats XML and spits out basically whatever you want. It can be more XML, SQL, Javascript, or HTML, which is what we're going to cover. Keep in mind, this is a server-side rendering technique, so if you are using a client-side rendering technique (best practice for large userbase), then this won't help you. But if you have need to render server-side, this could be a way to do it, and still use a single-page-application. The XSLT-UI framework is super-lightweight (code-wise), and doesn't require any dependencies (at least for .NET). Take the XML returned from, say, your SQL Server: ``` xml <RenderedControls> <UserList> <User Type="Admin">Alex</User> <User Type="SuperUser">Van</User> <User Type="FreeUser">Roger</User> <User>George</User> </UserList> </RenderedControls> ``` Which gets consumed by the XSLT code on the server: ``` xslt <?xml version="1.0" encoding="utf-8"?> <xsl:stylesheet version="1.0" xmlns:xsl="http://www.w3.org/1999/XSL/Transform" xmlns:foo="http://www.foo.org/" xmlns:bar="http://www.bar.org"> <xsl:template match ="RenderedControls/UserList" mode="ui"> <HtmlData Placeholder="GenericPopup"> <script>$("#divGenericPopup").show();</script> <table> <xsl:for-each select="User"> <tr> <xsl:attribute name="name"> <xsl:value-of select="./text"/> </xsl:attribute> <td> <xsl:value-of select="./text()"/> </td> <td> <xsl:value-of select="@Type"/> </td> </tr> </xsl:for-each> </table> </HtmlData> </xsl:template> </xsl:stylesheet> ``` Then, on your index.aspx (or php, or cshtml, or whatever), You have: ``` html <div class="middle-of-screen popup hidden" id="divGenericPopup" placeholder="GenericPopup"></div> ``` And after some generic code that puts the resulting HTML in its place (Javascript on the client): ``` html <div class="middle-of-screen popup hidden" id="divGenericPopup" placeholder="GenericPopup"> <script>$("#divGenericPopup").show();</script> <table> <tr name=""> <td>Alex</td> <td>Admin</td> </tr> <tr name=""> <td>Van</td> <td>SuperUser</td> </tr> <tr name=""> <td>Roger</td> <td>FreeUser</td> </tr> <tr name=""> <td>George</td> <td/> </tr> </table> </div> ``` You have a complete UI rendered and ready to go. Notice the` xsl:for-each ` in the xslt code. I'm sure you're used to doing for-each clauses in your cshtml and other rendering engines. And you can increase complexity easily. ### But Why? You might be asking: Why should I bother doing this? Well, there are several benefits to using this system. First, XSLT is a very well-defined language based in XML with very little room for error (like HTML in a way). You have helper functions that do a little bit of work for you. You can put business logic in the XSLT, but that is not recommended. It's better to do this on the database side in Stored Procedures (don't knock it till you try it). Because of this, you normally don't have to worry about debugging the XSLT (which you can still do in Visual Studio) because it is usually error-free. What you see is what you get. Something you normally can't say about JavaScript rendering frameworks. Second, XSLT is a [Turing-Complete language](http://www.unidex.com/turing/utm.htm). It still allows functional programming through <xsl:call-template> which will apply a template you have specified as a helper template (a template without the match attribute) onto the XML selection you pass to it. Using this framework, you can accomplish all tasks you would ever need to with XML. #### Tools You can try using Visual Studio, but that's really only best for updating an existing XSLT. For creating a new one with a good framework, I recommend [Oxygen](http://www.oxygenxml.com/xml_editor/xslt_editor.html). Visual Studio does have intellisense support for XSLT, so you can feel safe using that too. You can also use Visual Studio to debug an XSLT, stepping through the code and watching the resulting HTML being generated. #### Great, where do I start? You can develop your app how you normally would, one feature/module at a time. You can use different Xslt's by importing them into one "Master" XSLT: `<xsl:import href="RegenerateUI.xslt"/>` which basically inserts the code at runtime. Start by creating the canvas UI with placeholders described above for each section of your UI. Use Javascript to call your server code, knowing that either an error, or HTML will be returned, preparing to insert it where instructed. Setup your server code to receive parameters from Javascript and call your database. The returned XML from the database should be fed into the master XSLT, and the HTML, along with any "placeholder-to-use" values should be returned to the client and displayed. |

| title | Review: Mario Tennis - Aces |
| body | ## One of the best games on the Switch so far. ### A nice surprise ##### I've really been enjoying Mario Tennis: Aces on the Switch. It's my wife and I's new favorite game to play together. I bought it back at the beginning of October along with Super Mario Party (I'll get to that one later). And I was expecting it to take a back-seat to Super Mario Party. Man, was I so glad to be wrong. ### A fighting game? It's interesting because it plays more like a fighting game than a sports/tennis game. But the back-and-forth nature of tennis stops the fighting-game nature of getting stomped by someone too good for you. The skill-ceiling here is somewhat high, but not too high, and the learning curve is very low. Players have access to a fighting-game-like power-meter that fills up as you do charge shots, make "nice" serves, and block opponents' special shots. When the opponent hits the ball back to you, most of the time, you will see a star appear on the court. If you stand within the star, you have access to two powerful options: 1. Make a flat shot, which will be extra powerful and fast called a Star-shot. It will also push the opponent who hits it back. 2. If you have enough of your power meter charged (at least 1/3), you can initiate a Zone-Shot, which pops up a reticle on your screen, letting you aim your shot wherever you want (including out or into the net if you're not careful). When you hit the ball, it will be a powerful shot that will push an opponent back, and damage their racket (more on that next). But if your opponent presses the button right as the ball gets to them, they will "block" the shot, leaving them unharmed, and gaining them some power. ### Super shots When your power meter is full, you have the option to unleash a powerful Super-Shot, which automatically hits the ball no matter where it is, lets you aim it, and can break the opponent's racket if not blocked correctly. The opponent can try to tap the button at the right time to block the shot, or can use their power meter to slow down time to hit the ball at the right time more easily. ### Damage my racket? Yes, you can damage and break an opponent's racket. Normally you have 2 rackets for a match. Break both of them, and you **lose the game**! So be careful which super/zone shots you decide to try and return. It makes for a strategic decision every time someone wants to change the game with one of their special shots. ### Single player campaign? Yes, there is a medium-sized single-player story campaign where you go around a tennis-themed island overworld playing against opponents and doing challenges where you have to hit the ball in certain ways. Every level is creative in its own way, and offers the player a choice of whether to try and break the opponent's rackets or simply win the 2-set-2-game match. There are even boss battles, which, once completed, will unlock a special court to play in Free Play mode (the mode where you play with friends). ### How does it play with friends? The skill ceiling is pretty low, but it does make for a good time, and has surprising depth. If you're playing with someone of unequal skill, I encourage you to play doubles with intermediate AI-players. They mess up frequently, and that adds to the fun, and possibly allows the less-skilled player to get some points and possibly win a few games. # Final Score: 5/5 ### |

| title | Agile and Scrum are not "Terrible" as this article suggests |
| body | ### I recently discovered this article: [Why “Agile” and especially Scrum are terrible](https://michaelochurch.wordpress.com/2015/06/06/why-agile-and-especially-scrum-are-terrible/) ### And I wanted to discuss Agile, Scrum, and other project methodologies, and why this attitude of *one is better than the other* is deeply harmful. #### The main issue I have with this article is that it uses Agile and Scrum like that's the only thing you can do to work on a project if you so desire to use it. In practice, Agile, Kanban, Scrum, Waterfall, etc are just tools in your development arsenal. For example, when you have a big production-level product (a CRM for example), you might want to add a new module to it. This, let's say, requires a team of 4 and will take 6-8 months. You aren't worrying about architecture or technical debt because they are already in place. And the architecture/design of this project has already been handled, or will be handled by an architect/senior before the main work with the team of 4 will start. So you decide to use Scrum. Your project manager (who hopefully has a technical background) along with the team of 4 estimate and organize user stories into iterations/sprints, and you go for it. You overestimate by design, and everybody is happy and can do extra each iteration. You have 1 senior programmer in the team of 4 to lead the planning meeting at the beginning of each iteration to estimate the stories. Also, at the end of the article the author mentions that Engineer-lead teams are good. That is true, which is why we use Agile-methodologies to manage our work. From Design to Implementation to Architecture to QA and Production, you can use Agile to manage each piece that you are responsible for while partnering with other staff like QA or Account managers to minimize the amount of time you are sitting waiting on an email response or an action item. Even with my own solo-development projects, I use a Kanban board to manage chunks of work so I don't forget something I need to set up in my code, and I could just as easily use Scrum myself as well. In the end, the proper way to use Agile is to allow the developers to develop instead of having to use head-space to remember everything they need to do. It is not inherently bad, even in today's practice. Even if it can be (and often is) used poorly. "title": "Agile and Scrum are not \"Terrible\" as this article suggests",
"body": "### I recently discovered this article:\n[Why “Agile” and especially Scrum are terrible](https://michaelochurch.wordpress.com/2015/06/06/why-agile-and-especially-scrum-are-terrible/)\n\n### And I wanted to discuss Agile, Scrum, and other project methodologies, and why this attitude of *one is better than the other* is deeply harmful.\n\n####\n\nThe main issue I have with this article is that it uses Agile and Scrum like that's the only thing you can do to work on a project if you so desire to use it. \n\nIn practice, Agile, Kanban, Scrum, Waterfall, etc are just tools in your development arsenal. \n\nFor example, when you have a big production-level product (a CRM for example), you might want to add a new module to it. This, let's say, requires a team of 4 and will take 6-8 months. You aren't worrying about architecture or technical debt because they are already in place. And the architecture/design of this project has already been handled, or will be handled by an architect/senior before the main work with the team of 4 will start. \n\nSo you decide to use Scrum. Your project manager (who hopefully has a technical background) along with the team of 4 estimate and organize user stories into iterations/sprints, and you go for it. You overestimate by design, and everybody is happy and can do extra each iteration. You have 1 senior programmer in the team of 4 to lead the planning meeting at the beginning of each iteration to estimate the stories.\n\nAlso, at the end of the article the author mentions that Engineer-lead teams are good. Even with my own solo-development projects, I use a Kanban board to manage chunks of work so I don't forget something I need to set up in my code, and I could just as easily use Scrum myself as well.\n\nIn the end, the proper way to use Agile is to allow the developers to develop instead of having to use head-space to remember everything they need to do. It is not inherently bad, even in today's practice. Even if it can be (and often is) used poorly.\n\nThanks for reading,\nhttps://en.gravatar.com/userimage/108147373/b85b83b5b85f861c4eaceeb62c73abb6.jpeg",

| title | Riding in a Slingshot |
| body | ## This thing is fun... for a bit #### ! Recently, I got to ride as a passenger in a Polaris Slingshot. These things are designed to be driven like a car but feel like a motorcycle. My brother was the driver (he works for a BMW dealership) and I got his opinion as well. The ride was pretty exciting. It definitely feels unique to say the least. You won't be able to feel like you're right there on the ground, while at the same time being protected by an outer shell. Getting into the seat takes some getting used to, while getting out is easier thanks to a lever that the passenger/driver can pull to open the top flap above you. Going about 50-60mph is what feels the best, as well as going over hills. You do feel like you're on a roller-coaster at that point. Going around corners can feel frightening as a passenger because you can almost feel the right and left rear losing its center of gravity the harder you turn. As a driver, this is lessened because you are in control. Once you hit 70mph and above, the Slingshot starts to shake uncomfortably, and you get a sense that it really wasn't designed to be used at top speeds like that. In general, you can sense the back wheel taking the punishment normally needed for two wheels. The rear slides in a jerking manner when you turn too sharply. This adds to the excitement, but also can be worrying. ! In conclusion, the Slingshot is fun to drive, and fun to ride in. But I wouldn't own one, or want to drive it every day. |
