      "body": "<html>\n<p>One often hears Muslims say: \"Muslims honor Jesus more than Christians do.\" Moreover, you will find that Islam has a fairly well-defined doctrine of Christ. Its view is based on the Qur'an which has more about Christ than you might think. Briefly, here is what it says about Jesus Christ.Note first of all the names and titles given Jesus in the Qur'an. Under the personal name \"Isa\" or \"Isa Son of Mary\" he is frequently called \"Al-Masih\" (Messiah) and at one time or another is also referred to as \"the Word of God\", \"the Word of Truth\", \"a Spirit from Him\", \"the Messenger of God\", \"the Prophet of God\", and \"the Servant of God\". He is even said to be \"illustrious in this world and the next and of those nearest to God\" (3:45). The Qur'an also has a lot to say about Jesus. It relates, for example, the story of the angel's annunciation to Mary that she would have a son and the story of His virgin birth, and attributes to Jesus a number of miracles (of apocryphal origin). In a word, it says about Him many wonderful things.But what do these affirmations signify as concerns the person and work of Jesus Christ? Ah, there is the rub! They certainly do not communicate to the Muslim what they would to a Christian, who views Christ in the light of the teaching of the New Testament. For although the Qur'an speaks highly of Christ and presents miraculous aspects of His life as already mentioned, it also categorically denies two of the central teachings of the New Testament--His deity and His crucifixion--and radically misinterprets what they mean.When the Muslim tries to put all these things together and to express what he understands the Qur'an to be saying about Christ doctrinally, the result is quite different from what the Christian understands the New Testament to be saying. Christ is seen to be a Prophet and Envoy of God of \"surpassing greatness\" (according to one Muslim writer), but only a man and nothing more. As a performer of exceptional miracles, he was rescued by God from an untimely end, was raised up to heaven, and (according to certain traditions) will come back to earth again--to die a Muslim! He is not the Saviour of the world, and is certainly not God, or \"the Son of God\".What then about the claim that \"Muslims honor Jesus more than Christians do\"? Certainly, we do not want to allow ourselves to be entangled in sterile debate over who honors Christ the most. But neither should we feel intimidated. We must try first of all to understand how they come to such a conclusion. Above all we need to honor Christ by a life of genuine love and service to man which belies such misrepresentations (I Peter 3:13-15).</p>\n</html>",

      "body": "<html>\n<p>From time to time on twitter — and yesterday in context of that Windows XP ransomware / NHS thing — I get in an argument about how crypto-currencies will revolutionise the whole world of finance — and maybe they will. But in my experience proponents’ arguments stop at the level of <em>How can they possibly stop an internationally distributed currency run by no-one in particular</em>? The answer is, easily, at least once it starts getting traction so that it would matter on an international scale.Firstly as a starter: I have been told that Bitcoin is already important, after all it has $30bn of market cap. First point to note, US$ M1 is $3tn, give or take. So even on a pretty narrow measure, BTC is 1% of US$ — and BTC is (a) international, and (b) probably a not insignificant supply of the coins is inaccessible by now. Now this is of course a stock and we are interested in flows, and whilst I don’t have the numbers I am pretty certain that the ratio of flows is even more lopsided — especially once you take out some spurious stuff like mixers (and Satoshi dice? are Satoshi dice still a thing?). This is to say: the reason that there are no controls in place is not because it is impossible to control, but mostly because it thus far is not significant enough to matter.So how will states control Bitcoin and other crypto currencies if need be? The answer is of course <em>like any other assets that can serve as a means of exchange, using the anti-money laundering and anti-terrorist finance regulation that is in place globally,</em> and in what follows I’ll discuss how that works.Globally there is a thing called the Financial Action Task Force (FATF) and they run a <a href=\"http://www.fatf-gafi.org/about/whoweare/#d.en.11232\">shiny website</a>, explaining who they are: an organisation of 35 large countries that coordinate on money laundering matters and that ensure that equivalent legislation is in place in all of them. In the EU, this legislation is mostly contained in the Anti Money Laundering Directive (AMLD 4) <a href=\"http://eur-lex.europa.eu/legal-content/EN/TXT/PDF/?uri=CELEX:32015L0849&amp;from=EN\">2015/849</a>. So without further ado, let’s dive into those regulations.Firstly: <strong>To whom do those regulations apply?</strong> The short answer is: essentially everyone active in financial services, plus everyone outside financial services (!) handling cash amounts of over €10,000 (aggregated over multiple related transactions) for the purchase of goods. So if your business is selling gold, or real estate, or art — as soon as your item is of moderately substantial value, you are covered. As an aside: technically the regulation only mentions <em>goods</em> so I guess if you flip bitcoins for €10,000+ in cash you are currently technically fine, but this is not really relevant for what follows.The key article here is Article 11 (my highlights):</p>\n<blockquote><em>Member States shall ensure that obliged entities apply customer due diligence measures in the following circumstances:</em></blockquote>\n<blockquote><em>(a) when establishing a business relationship;</em></blockquote>\n<blockquote><em><strong>(b) when carrying out an occasional transaction that:</strong></em></blockquote>\n<blockquote><em><strong>(i) amounts to EUR 15 000 or more, whether that transaction is carried out in a single operation or in several operations which appear to be linked; or</strong></em></blockquote>\n<blockquote><em><strong>(ii) constitutes a transfer of funds, as defined in point (9) of Article 3 of Regulation (EU) 2015/847 of the European Parliament and of the Council ( 1 ), exceeding EUR 1 000;</strong></em></blockquote>\n<blockquote><em><strong>(c) in the case of persons trading in goods, when carrying out occasional transactions in cash amounting to EUR 10 000 or more, whether the transaction is carried out in a single operation or in several operations which appear to be linked;</strong></em></blockquote>\n<blockquote><em>(d) for providers of gambling services, upon the collection of winnings, the wagering of a stake, or both, when carrying out transactions amounting to EUR 2 000 or more, whether the transaction is carried out in a single operation or in several operations which appear to be linked;</em></blockquote>\n<blockquote><em><strong>(e) when there is a suspicion of money laundering or terrorist financing, regardless of any derogation, exemption or threshold;</strong></em></blockquote>\n<blockquote><em>(f) when there are doubts about the veracity or adequacy of previously obtained customer identification data.</em></blockquote>\n<p>What customer due diligence measures are is detailed in Article 13.1:Customer due diligence measures shall comprise:</p>\n<blockquote><em>(a) identifying the customer and verifying the customer’s identity on the basis of documents, data or information obtained from a reliable and independent source;</em></blockquote>\n<blockquote><em>(b) identifying the beneficial owner and taking reasonable measures to verify that person’s identity so that the obliged entity is satisfied that it knows who the beneficial owner is, including, as regards legal persons, trusts, companies, foundations and similar legal arrangements, taking reasonable measures to understand the ownership and control structure of the customer;</em></blockquote>\n<blockquote><em>(c) assessing and, as appropriate, obtaining information on the purpose and intended nature of the business relationship;</em></blockquote>\n<blockquote><em>(d) conducting ongoing monitoring of the business relationship including scrutiny of transactions undertaken throughout the course of that relationship to ensure that the transactions being conducted are consistent with the obliged entity’s knowledge of the customer, the business and risk profile, including where necessary the source of funds and ensuring that the documents, data or information held are kept up-to-date. When performing the measures referred to in points (a) and (b) of the first subparagraph, obliged entities shall also verify that any person purporting to act on behalf of the customer is so authorised and identify and verify the identity of that person.</em></blockquote>\n<p>So essentially, whenever someone comes to you with a large pile of cash to buy stuff — or comes repeatedly with not quite that large piles of cash — you have to go through some pretty long process to ascertain that this money has been received lawfully.Now interestingly this directive does not define <em>cash,</em> so I guess technically those provision would not apply if you’d pay in gold (there is a small provision regarding bearer securities in Article 10), even though it would be difficult to argue that paragraph (e) — suspicion of money laundering — would not apply in this case.Anyway, those paragraphs — suitably amended — are all you need to ensure that crypto currencies can not be used to shelter proceeds of crime:</p>\n<ol>\n  <li>Ensure that everyone who is exchanging crypto into electronic fiat is appropriately regulated and supervised; this is easy to achieve as they’ll need bank accounts, and unless they submit to regulation they will not get those</li>\n  <li>Ensure that the rules in Article 11 above also apply to all purchases made with crypto currencies or other digital assets</li>\n</ol>\n<p>For good measure one might also want to ensure that exchanging cash into crypto and vice versa is covered, but this is not quite essential, as it is the equivalent of changing say USD into EUR — both are without the boundaries of the controlled financial system.Now you might say <em>“That’s all nice and well, but what if I establish my crypto exchange in a country that has not signed up to those AML regulations?”</em>. First point to make here is <em>good luck to you</em> if your intention is to launder a significant amount of money through a dodgy jurisdiction if you lack the extra-judicial clout of enforcing claims if something goes wrong in a system with a weak judiciary. More importantly, there is the concept of a high-risk country in the legislation (Art 9.1):</p>\n<blockquote><em>Third-country jurisdictions which have strategic deficiencies in their national AML/CFT regimes that pose significant threats to the financial system of the Union (‘high-risk third countries’) shall be identified in order to protect the proper functioning of the internal market.</em></blockquote>\n<p>Once a country is in the dog-house, any financial institutions dealing with funds coming from there must apply what is called <em>enhanced customer due diligence</em>(Art 18):</p>\n<blockquote><em>When dealing with natural persons or legal entities established in the third countries identified by the Commission as high-risk third countries, Member States shall require obliged entities to apply enhanced customer due diligence measures to manage and mitigate those risks appropriately.</em></blockquote>\n<h4>Implications</h4>\n<p>So what are the implications of this for crypto currencies? To name but a few:</p>\n<ul>\n  <li>Buying expensive stuff (&gt;€10,000) in crypto will always be a pain, as the seller will have to perform customer due diligence on you; when you pay via bank card they can rely on the bank having done their due diligence on you</li>\n  <li>Crypto-to-fiat exchanges for mainstream customers will need to be located within a regulated institutions, and will need to perform the usual customer and transaction due diligence</li>\n  <li>Being able to prove where you got your crypto cash can be a good thing</li>\n</ul>\n</html>",

And&nbsp;</p>\n<p>the whole time, he was supposed to be knocked out. He was supposed to be&nbsp;</p>\n<p>unconscious.</p>\n<p><br></p>\n<p>But he was not unconscious. He was awake. He was writhing, arching his&nbsp;</p>\n<p>back, talking about how much everything hurt. And it just went on and on&nbsp;</p>\n<p>and on. It went on for ten minutes, and then 20 minutes, and then 30&nbsp;</p>\n<p>minutes and then 40 minutes. He, actually, at one point, ended up try to&nbsp;</p>\n<p>help them, trying to help them kill him.</p>\n<p><br></p>\n<p>He tried to help them get the needles into himself because they made these&nbsp;</p>\n<p>more than a dozen tries and nothing was working to knock him out. Finally,&nbsp;</p>\n<p>it went on for so long prison officials who are overseeing the execution,&nbsp;</p>\n<p>they pulled the curtain so the witnesses couldn`t see anymore of what was&nbsp;</p>\n<p>going on. And soon after that, they actually decided they couldn`t go&nbsp;</p>\n<p>ahead with it.</p>\n<p><br></p>\n<p>Not that they felt bad and they didn`t want to keep trying to do it, but&nbsp;</p>\n<p>they literally believed that they could not do it. They had messed up&nbsp;</p>\n<p>their chance. It want working. They couldn`t figure it out.</p>\n<p><br></p>\n<p>They called the governor. She was at a basketball game at the time, but&nbsp;</p>\n<p>she heard them out from the prison and told them, OK, if they felt like&nbsp;</p>\n<p>they couldn`t complete the execution, they should call it off. The state&nbsp;</p>\n<p>would stop the execution in the middle of it. They would stop trying to&nbsp;</p>\n<p>kill him. So, they started to make preparations to bring Clayton Lockett&nbsp;</p>\n<p>back. They started making preparations to try to revive him after spending&nbsp;</p>\n<p>all this time trying to kill him, but by then he was groaning and then he&nbsp;</p>\n<p>was convulsing and then he was in and out of consciousness.</p>\n<p><br></p>\n<p>And then, finally, after 43 minutes, including them trying to call it off&nbsp;</p>\n<p>in the middle of it, and trying to bring him back, after 43 minutes he&nbsp;</p>\n<p>finally died of a heart attack. That was April, 2014. Just botched,&nbsp;</p>\n<p>right?</p>\n<p><br></p>\n<p>The idea basically, I mean, whatever you think about the death penalty,&nbsp;</p>\n<p>this is not the way it`s supposed to go. I mean, you`re supposed to be&nbsp;</p>\n<p>rendered unconscious and then they kill you in our sleep. This was the&nbsp;</p>\n<p>opposite of that. Oklahoma just absolutely blew it.</p>\n<p><br></p>\n<p>And the drug they were using to try to kill him is a drug that Oklahoma had&nbsp;</p>\n<p>never tried to use before and we learned the execution team, the people who&nbsp;</p>\n<p>are actually sticking him with the needles, the medical people and&nbsp;</p>\n<p>corrections people, people on the team trying to carry out this execution,&nbsp;</p>\n<p>they didn`t know anything about this new drug. They`d never used it before&nbsp;</p>\n<p>obviously. They didn`t know anything about how it was supposed to work,&nbsp;</p>\n<p>how it might be different than other drugs. They`d never trained on it,&nbsp;</p>\n<p>been briefed on it.</p>\n<p><br></p>\n<p>And that Clayton Lockett execution ended up making national headlines&nbsp;</p>\n<p>because of how brutal and botched and bloody it was because it went on for&nbsp;</p>\n<p>so long, because the witnesses saw so much of what happened and it was so&nbsp;</p>\n<p>disturbing. But it wasn`t until months after it happened that we found out&nbsp;</p>\n<p>what went wrong there. And we found out specifically how Oklahoma ended up&nbsp;</p>\n<p>getting that drug and why they got that drug.</p>\n<p><br></p>\n<p>It turns out in part it was because of this guy. Recognize him?</p>\n<p><br></p>\n<p>This little bloody chapter in modern American history is not what this man&nbsp;</p>\n<p>is famous for but it`s part of his record. Let me explain. Back in 2014,&nbsp;</p>\n<p>after the – this execution went so wrong, investigative reporters at “The&nbsp;</p>\n<p>Tulsa World” newspaper, they were able to figure out mostly through court&nbsp;</p>\n<p>documents but also through their own digging that the state in that&nbsp;</p>\n<p>execution, they hadn`t followed their own laws and protocols about how an&nbsp;</p>\n<p>execution like that is supposed to work.</p>\n<p><br></p>\n<p>I mean, what happened in that particular execution is the state apparently&nbsp;</p>\n<p>realized sort of belatedly, oops, that they didn`t have drugs on hand for&nbsp;</p>\n<p>this next execution that they wanted to do and when they figured that out,&nbsp;</p>\n<p>rather than stopping the process, raising it up the chain of command, maybe&nbsp;</p>\n<p>delaying the executions a little longer in order to figure out how they&nbsp;</p>\n<p>were going to handle that serious roadblock to what they wanted to do.&nbsp;</p>\n<p>Instead of that, they decided, no, we have to do these executions. Now,&nbsp;</p>\n<p>we`re not going to delay them. We`ve been under a lot of scrutiny. We`re&nbsp;</p>\n<p>going for them and they scrambled. We`ll figure out the drugs.</p>\n<p><br></p>\n<p>And specifically, it was lawyers from the general counsel`s office and the&nbsp;</p>\n<p>corrections department and lawyers from the attorney`s general office.&nbsp;</p>\n<p>Scott Pruitt, the attorney general of that state, his office and the top&nbsp;</p>\n<p>lawyer at the Corrections Department, they decided with this execution date&nbsp;</p>\n<p>bearing down on them, they decided that they were basically going to&nbsp;</p>\n<p>freelance. They`re going to figure it out. Never mind the protocol, never&nbsp;</p>\n<p>mind the rules. They tried to figure it out themselves.</p>\n<p><br></p>\n<p>Lawyers from Scott Pruitt`s office and the general counsel`s office and the&nbsp;</p>\n<p>corrections department, they personally got online and they said they just&nbsp;</p>\n<p>started browsing around. The general counsel later explained in a court&nbsp;</p>\n<p>filing that he and Scott Pruitt`s office, they started basically, randomly&nbsp;</p>\n<p>looking around online to see if they could figure out how long it takes for&nbsp;</p>\n<p>various drugs to kill people.</p>\n<p><br></p>\n<p>Now, remember, these are lawyers. These are not medical professionals of&nbsp;</p>\n<p>any kind who have any expertise on this matter. And when the lawyers were&nbsp;</p>\n<p>asked where they got the information that they found about how long various&nbsp;</p>\n<p>drugs take to kill people, I want to read you literally the actual quote in&nbsp;</p>\n<p>the deposition and the answer to that question was this, quote, “On&nbsp;</p>\n<p>WikiLeaks or whatever. I did my own research, I looked online. You know,&nbsp;</p>\n<p>what passed the key, WikiLeaks, WikiLeaks or whatever it is.”</p>\n<p><br></p>\n<p>That`s where they say they found the information that led them to pick the&nbsp;</p>\n<p>drugs that they picked, that were then used for the first time in that&nbsp;</p>\n<p>state on Clayton Lockett. They found it on WikiLeaks or whatever. They&nbsp;</p>\n<p>looked around online.</p>\n<p><br></p>\n<p>The attorney general of the state is not supposed to be involved in a&nbsp;</p>\n<p>process like that. Picking the actual drugs, that is not the attorney&nbsp;</p>\n<p>general`s purview. Nobody in the attorney general`s office is even&nbsp;</p>\n<p>expected to have any expertise for doing anything like that and the rules&nbsp;</p>\n<p>and protocols in the state don`t say that the attorney general should do&nbsp;</p>\n<p>anything like that.</p>\n<p><br></p>\n<p>And the attorney general, Scott Pruitt, he denied up and down for a long&nbsp;</p>\n<p>time that he or his office had anything to do with that process. No, we&nbsp;</p>\n<p>didn`t have anything to do with picking those drugs. Why would anybody&nbsp;</p>\n<p>even say that? Obviously, that`s not in the rules, why would we do it?</p>\n<p><br></p>\n<p>But you know what? There was an investigation. Multiple sources, multiple&nbsp;</p>\n<p>other actors, multiple other state officials involved in that terribly&nbsp;</p>\n<p>botched process of killing that guy in 2014, multiple people said despite&nbsp;</p>\n<p>your denials, Scott Pruitt, yes, you were involved in this. The Department&nbsp;</p>\n<p>of Public Safety in Oklahoma did an investigation into the botched&nbsp;</p>\n<p>execution.</p>\n<p><br></p>\n<p>And the director of the corrections department confirmed that a lethal drug&nbsp;</p>\n<p>in that execution were not chosen, according to the protocol designed by&nbsp;</p>\n<p>the state. They weren`t. They`re picked by the lawyers.</p>\n<p><br></p>\n<p>He said, quote, “The previous general counsel and the attorney general`s&nbsp;</p>\n<p>office that`s who chose the drugs. That general counsel who was himself&nbsp;</p>\n<p>involved in searching the WikiLeaks or whatever, for the drug information,&nbsp;</p>\n<p>along with Scott Pruitt`s office. He later explained how it was that he&nbsp;</p>\n<p>and these other lawyers ended up in that weird position which they were&nbsp;</p>\n<p>never supposed to be in.</p>\n<p><br></p>\n<p>He told investigators that basically was political. He told investigators&nbsp;</p>\n<p>that the state was under pressure to carry out that execution that night,&nbsp;</p>\n<p>particularly because it was supposed to be a very exciting double header.&nbsp;</p>\n<p>That night, it was going to be Clayton Lockett then they had another guy&nbsp;</p>\n<p>standing by who they were going to kill with the same drugs right after&nbsp;</p>\n<p>Clayton Lockett. They were going to do two in one night.</p>\n<p><br></p>\n<p>A lot of attention for something like that. Quote, “The attorney general`s&nbsp;</p>\n<p>office being an elected office was under a lot of pressure. The staff over&nbsp;</p>\n<p>there was under a lot of pressure to say get it done, you know? And so,&nbsp;</p>\n<p>yeah, yeah, I think it was a joint decision but there was. I`ve got to say&nbsp;</p>\n<p>there was a push to make the decision, get it done, hurry up about it.”</p>\n<p><br></p>\n<p>Get it done, hurry up about it. That was from the attorney general`s&nbsp;</p>\n<p>office, because it`s an elected office. He`s an ambitious guy in that&nbsp;</p>\n<p>office, and they wanted to get those guys killed, get this thing over with.&nbsp;</p>\n<p>Right?</p>\n<p><br></p>\n<p>Who cares what the drug is? Who cares if we`ve never used that drug&nbsp;</p>\n<p>before, I looked something up on the WikiLeaks or whatever. You got&nbsp;</p>\n<p>yourself a smartphone, right?</p>\n<p><br></p>\n<p>We`ll use something we have never tried before, who cares, get it done.</p>\n<p><br></p>\n<p>And that is how Scott Pruitt apparently ended up making the decision about&nbsp;</p>\n<p>a brand new experiment method that Oklahoma was going to try out on its&nbsp;</p>\n<p>prisoners that led to 43 minutes of Clayton Lockett writhing and talking&nbsp;</p>\n<p>and trying to get the needle in himself and them trying to call off the&nbsp;</p>\n<p>execution in the middle of it and him trying to get off the gurney before&nbsp;</p>\n<p>finally three quarters of an hour into it, it was finally a heart attack&nbsp;</p>\n<p>that killed him.</p>\n</html>",
