| title | Playful at work |
| body | We’d all love to be more playful at work, but who really has time for office ping pong and zorbing away days? Play is what you do once you’ve finished all your work, right? But what if we told you that play will make you more productive, creative and happy? As the saying goes, "All work and no play makes Jack a dull boy." So, whilst zorbing may never feature heavily in your working week, it may be time to re-think the way you work. Here are some simple steps you can take right now to make play part of everything you do. 1. There’s no such thing as a boring task A playful mindset can be applied to almost anything. In fact, it’s often the mundane 'everyday' jobs that have the most potential for play. Take the Virgin Trains toilet information. A functional sign would have sufficed, but by adding humour to the copy and celebrity voiceovers to the tannoy announcement, they’ve become something of a cult hit, parodied around the world. Not bad for an officious sign. What about writing a weekly update email? How could we turn that into play? This is the question we asked ourselves when we realised the internal content updates we sent to our boss every week had become a chore. So, we turned it into a silly 30 second video, featuring penguin costumes and the occasional dog cameo. It doesn’t take any more time for us to do, but it’s more fun for all concerned and gets the team practising their video skills as well. 2. Surround yourself with things that inspire you It’s hard to be playful when you’re staring at a blank wall in an office. So, surround yourself with things that inspire you. In The Art Of Innovation, Tom Kelley explains how the engineers and creatives at IDEO design studio maintain their edge: from designing full-scale installations to personalise their desks to a communal trolley full of weird and wonderful materials. If you can’t persuade your manager to let you redecorate the office, try making a scrapbook for you and your team - don’t restrict yourself to things you think will be 'useful' to your job. Just put anything and everything in there that takes your fancy, because you never know when that obscure fact about dung beetle mating habits may come in handy. 3. Embrace the freedom of mediocrity Being a pro at something can be both a blessing and a curse. If you’re a good writer, you may feel there is undue pressure to 'perform'. It’s hard to be playful and free when there are big expectations, even when they’re just your own, so why not try playing at something you’re not very good at? Instead of writing, why don’t you try drawing? Or clay modelling? It will help you be less focused on the end results and really throw yourself into the task at hand. This can be a particularly good method for reinvigorating a project you’re going around the houses with. 4. Play is a skill that needs to be honed It’s important to remember that being playful is a skill. And just like any skill, you need to work at it to be any good. Lucky for you, there’s a wealth of great advice out there on how to be more playful and creative. One of my favourites is A Technique For Producing Ideas by James Webb Young. This slimline book packs a punch and demystifies the creative process. I’ve read it many times over, and often refer to it when I’m feeling uninspired. For loads of interesting examples of how gamification is being harnessed by a diverse range of companies, read Play At Work by Adam L. Penenberg. 5. Step away from your desk Desks are a good place to write emails and drink too much coffee. They are generally a bad place to play. So, make sure you step away, even if just for 20 minutes, and reset your brain. No matter how busy you are, you’ll be more productive and creative if you do. For example, on a particularly meeting-heavy day, I grabbed five minutes to make a cup of tea and unwind. During those five minutes in the kitchen, I came up with the idea for the #Avocard, which ended up being our most successful social campaign ever. So, get away from your desk whenever you can. If your team doesn’t understand that work can happen away from your desk too, then it might be time to start looking for a new job! 6. Don’t worry about being productive One of the biggest mistakes people make is thinking that everything must have a clearly defined purpose or goal. Some of the greatest discoveries in history were made by accident, by somebody playing around - just because. So, whatever you do, don’t think you have to play at something relevant to your profession. There’s only one rule when it comes to play: it must be fun! 7. Reconnect with your inner child As adults, we can often find it hard to relax and stop worrying about what other people will think about us. If that applies to you, it might be time to reconnect with your inner child. With zero inhibitions and boundless imagination, children are naturals when it comes to play. If you’re lucky enough to have a child in your life, go spend some time building dens and eating mud pies. Spending hours making up imaginary conversations between my daughter’s dollies really helps my imagination flow, and I’ll often find solutions to work-related problems magically transplant themselves into my mind. If you’re having trouble sourcing a child, there are still plenty of simple ways to reconnect with your inner child. One of my favourites is to incorporate colouring pencils into your office - they help meetings fly by! We’re lucky enough to partner with Rethink Mental Illness so we’ve got quite a stash of mindfulness colouring pads and pencils strewn around the office - great for zoning out and for long conference calls! 8. Find yourself a playmate It’s more fun when you’ve got somebody to play with, so find yourself a collaborator - it can be someone in your team, or ideally somebody from a slightly different field so that you come at things from a different perspective. Whoever it is, make sure you have an easy and natural connection. You should feel totally comfortable in their presence and there should be no egos. Try to be open to anything, and don’t think too practically - there will be plenty of time for that later. For me personally, I feel more inhibited when I’m in a bigger group of people, so when I’m playing and bouncing around crazy ideas, I prefer to do it with a maximum of two other people before I take my ideas more widely. Now we’d love to hear from you: how do you make play part of your everyday? Share your tips and experiences in the comments so we can all learn to be more playful! |

| title | Bitcoin 'MASSACRE continues' US authorities 'open' to REGULATING cryptocurrency platforms |
| body | BITCOIN’S global clampdown could continue as US authorities “are open” to discussing “increased federal regulation” for cryptocurrency trading platforms as market prices tumble, it has emerged. Christopher Giancarlo, the chairman of the Commodity Futures Trading Commission (CFTC) and Jay Clayton, chairman of the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) will appear in front of the Senate Banking Committee today where they will discuss the potential future of virtual currencies. Prepared testimony’s for the pair were released yesterday and suggest that the US government could slap further regulations on plummeting cryptocurrencies in the near future. Mr Clayton wrote: “We are open to exploring with Congress, as well as without federal and state colleagues, whether increased federal regulation of cryptocurrency trading platforms is necessary or appropriate.” The CFTC chairman added: “Virtual currencies…likely require more attentive regulatory oversight in key areas, especially to the extent that retail investors are attracted to this space. Bitcoin’s value has dropped by more than 60 per cent in the last month as the cryptocurrency continues to free fall following an incredible spike, according to leading market tracker Coinable. Meanwhile, Ethereum, Ripple, Litecoin and Bitcoin Cash have all experienced downward trends. Sources in Congress have stated that the hearing will be a “fact-finding exercise” that will discuss the power of the two bodies on cryptocurrencies The meeting is also believed to discuss ways in which investors in virtual currencies can be protected. The SEC has argued that those putting their money in initial coin offerings (ICOs) should be subject to the same failsafe precautions as equity market offerings. Both Mr Clayton and Mr Giancarlo will suggest that the current regulatory system’s patchwork to cater to the rise in prominence of cryptocurrencies should be altered. he CFTC has stated that it lacks the ability to regulate Bitcoin Cash - Mr Giancarlo explained that a licensing regime for Bitcoin Cash could prevent fraud and money laundering. Back in December, Bitcoin hit an all-time high of £13991.86 ($19,535.70) on December 17 before sharply declining. A brief resurgence of the cryptocurrency occurred on January 6 when the value hit £12,201.24 ($17,035.60) before dramatically going into free fall. Today the Bitcoin market opened at 5866.06 ($8,186.65) and closed at £4,717.78 ($6,583.56) that marked another sad day for cryptocurrency investors. Bitcoin continued its spiral downwards after some banks banned their customers from buying it with credit cards. In addition to worries from the US, India is also being touted as another country that could introduce crippling cryptocurrency regulation. New Delhi’s economic affairs secretary, Subhash Chandra Garg, stated that the government is setting up a panel to analyse cryptocurrencies and aims to submit a report on them in the current fiscal year. He explained: “The government will take steps to make it illegal as a payment system. As well as having a regulator in place. “We hope now within this financial year the committee will finalise its recommendations… certainly, there will be a regulator.” |

| title | Bitcoin drops below $6,200 for first time in three months |
| body | The virtual currency fell to $6,190 for the first time since mid-November, according to Bloomberg News, and represents the latest hammering for a unit that saw a stratospheric 26-fold rise last year. Bitcoin plunged 20 per cent to a three-month low today, its latest sharp loss following a series of setbacks for the cryptocurrency that, with a collapse across global mainstream markets adding to the selling. The virtual currency fell to $6,190 for the first time since mid-November, according to Bloomberg News, and represents the latest hammering for a unit that saw a stratospheric 26-fold rise last year. Today's collapse comes just six weeks after bitcoin hit a record high of $19,511, fuelled by a flood of speculators looking to make a quick buck, with warnings it could fall another 50 per cent. Since those heady days the cryptomarket -- which includes dozens of other units -- has been pounded by news of crackdowns by governments including in China, Russia and South Korea, one of the biggest markets for the sector. On Thursday, India said it would "take all measures to eliminate" cryptocurrencies' use as part of a payment system and in funding illegitimate activities, while Japanese authorities raided a virtual currency exchange after it lost $530 million to hackers. Central bank in Europe, Japan and the United States have also flagged concerns about the unit and this week saw several commercial lenders say they would stop allowing their customers to buy bitcoin through their credit cards owing to debt concerns. Stephen Innes, head of trading for Asia Pacific at Oanda, said "the dynamics behind the moves are regulatory clampdowns and investors losing confidence in crypto". The sell-off on Tuesday was exacerbated by crushing losses on world stock markets, with the Dow on Wall Street suffering its biggest one-day points loss and wiping out all its 2018 gains. The global rout comes as panicked investors fret over rising US borrowing costs, leading them to cash in profits after a stellar couple of months that have seen many indexes hit record or all-time highs. Equities have enjoyed months of surges fuelled by optimism over the US economy, corporate earnings and the global outlook. But while traders have been piling into equities, pushing many global indexes to record or multi-year highs, there has been growing concern on trading floors about elevated US Treasury bond yields -- at four-year highs -- and the likelihood of fresh Federal Reserve interest rate hikes. "The risk-off tone is hitting Bitcoin almost as hard as a global regulator and bank scrutiny," said Greg McKenna, chief market strategist at AxiTrader. "The latest dent to the Cryptospace has been banks saying they are shutting down the ability of clients to buy bitcoin with their cards." "This could end up a full round trip back into the $1,850/$2,966 region. |

| body | Deep, Buried Glaciers Spotted On Mars This NASA file handout image obtained August 24, 2017, created on May 21, 2017, at 13:21 local Mars time by the High-Resolution Imaging Science Experiment (HiRISE) camera on NASA’s Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter, shows snow and ice accumulated during Winter covering dunes in the planet’s Northern hemisphere. HO / NASA / AFP Buried glaciers have been spotted on Mars, offering new hints about how much water may be accessible on the Red Planet and where it is located, researchers said Thursday. Although ice has long been known to exist on Mars, a better understanding of its depth and location could be vital to future human explorers, said the report in the US journal Science. Erosion has exposed eight ice sites, some as shallow as a few feet (one meter) below the surface, and going as deep as 100 meters or more, it said. These underground cliffs appear “to be nearly pure ice,” said the report, which is based on data from the Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter, launched in 2005. “This kind of ice is more widespread than previously thought,” said Colin Dundas, a geologist at the US Geological Survey in Flagstaff, Arizona. The ice contains bands and colour variations that suggest it was formed layer by layer, perhaps as snow accumulated over time, leading to ice sheets. Researchers believe the ice formed relatively recently, because the sites appear smooth on the surface, unpocked by craters that would be formed by celestial debris smashing into the planet over time. The cliffs are all near the poles, which slip into a frigid darkness during the Martian winter and would not be a suitable site for a long-term human camp. However, if a sample could be drilled from one of the glaciers, researchers could learn plenty about Mars’ climate history and the potential for life on Earth’s neighbouring planet. NASA plans to send the first human explorers to Mars by the 2030s. |

| body | Grammys Vow To Tackle Gender Bias Amid Resignation Calls Recording artists Beyonce, Jay Z and daughter Blue Ivy Carter attend the 60th Annual GRAMMY Awards at Madison Square Garden on January 28, 2018 in New York City. PHOTO: Christopher Polk / GETTY IMAGES NORTH AMERICA / AFP The chief of the body that hands out the Grammys vowed Thursday to do more to tackle gender bias as he faced calls to resign over his contentious explanation on why more women weren’t winning. The Recording Academy, which is comprised of 13,000 music professionals who vote on the industry’s most prestigious prizes, said it was setting up an independent task force to address gender issues. The task force will “review every aspect of what we do as an organization and identify where we can do more to overcome the explicit barriers and unconscious biases that impede female advancement in the music community,” the Academy’s president and CEO, Neil Portnow, said in a statement. “We will also place ourselves under a microscope and tackle whatever truths are revealed,” he said. Portnow, a music producer and label executive who has headed the Recording Academy since 2002, caused a furor on Sunday in a customary press appearance at the close of the awards. Portnow said that the music industry needed to show a “welcome mat” to women and increase mentorship to new professionals — and he raised eyebrows as he explained how female artists could win more awards. “I think it has to begin with women who have the creativity in their hearts and their souls who want to be musicians… to step up, because I think they would be welcome,” Portnow told reporters at New York’s Madison Square Garden. ‘Time’s up’ Pop singers Katy Perry and P!nk were among the prominent women who took Portnow to task for his remarks. Just as Portnow was announcing the task force, nearly two dozen women executives in music called on him to resign. Using the language of the growing movement against gender discrimination and harassment, they wrote in their open letter, “Time’s up, Neil.” His remarks at the Grammys “do not constitute recognition of women’s achievements, but rather a call for men to take action to ‘welcome’ women,” they wrote. “We do not await your welcome into the fraternity. We do not have to sing louder, jump higher or be nicer to prove ourselves.” Signatories included Carla Sacks, the founder of the prominent public relations firm Sacks and Co., and pop star Pharrell Williams’ manager Caron Veazey. They cited a recent University of Southern California study that found that men accounted for more than 90 percent of Grammy nominees — who include not only performers but songwriters, engineers and others in the business — between 2013 and 2018. ‘Poor choice of words’ Portnow, revisiting his remarks in his latest statement, said “I understand the hurt” caused by “my poor choice of words.” “I also now realize that it’s about more than just my words. Because those words, while not reflective of my beliefs, echo the real experience of too many women,” he said. Only one woman, Lorde, was nominated for the most prestigious Grammy of Album of the Year at the latest awards and none were in the running for Record of the Year, which recognizes best song. Funk revivalist Bruno Mars won in both categories. The Grammys rallied behind the #MeToo movement through an intense performance by Kesha, who sang her autobiographical song “Praying” about her alleged rape by her producer. But “Praying” lost out for Best Pop Solo Performance to the only man among the five nominees in the category — Ed Sheeran for “Shape of You” about a drunken hook-up with a woman he meets in a bar. The year, however, was not entirely representative. Adele won Album of the Year in 2017 and Taylor Swift took the top prize the year before. Swift’s latest album came out too late for eligibility while Lady Gaga and Katy Perry, major forces in past years, enjoyed less acclaim with their most recent works. |
