memoResteeming Service Update: From this point forward all resteems will cost only $2 starting now. You can order a resteem to over 9000 followers for your post by sending 2 SBD (Steem Dollars) and the link to your post to @carlobelgado. The result you get depends on your post quality and how interesting it is to people. Resteems are just like retweets on Twitter - it puts your post in front of more eyeballs but it doesn't guarantee people will click on it to read it and upvote it. More money is only one of the possible benefits from a resteem. You could also gain more followers who support your efforts on Steemit long term. Hopefully, this will help some of you gain more exposure on this great platform where it is very hard these days to attract views for your posts. To order a resteem for your post, send 2 SBD and the link to your post to @carlobelgado, and he will resteem it. Best wishes!

body![ice 2.jpg](https://steemitimages.com/DQmPckA8oTidQXNNzF7aLDUz9p2VQTaupiYm3m8yFkEPpWZ/ice%202.jpg) Afghanistan remains a crossroads of cultural, political, and physical geography. Photograph by Frank and Helen Schreider, National Geographic Big Find In 2003, Dr. Fredrik Hiebert was among a group of archaeologists who witnessed the rediscovery of the “Bactrian hoard,” a bounty of 20,000 gold, silver, and ivory objects that had been hidden in Afghanistan’s presidential palace in Kabul 15 years earlier. Read more about the Bactrian hoard here. By Stuart Thornton Wednesday, June 12, 2013 The Silk Road was an ancient, storied network of roads, trading posts, and oases that linked Asia and the Mediterranean basin. The modern nation of Afghanistan was a major thoroughfare of the Silk Road. Today, the region continues to be a crossroads for concepts of ancient and modern, East and West, geography and history. Afghanistan is a land of rugged mountains, but its intimidating topography was actually beneficial to ancient traders, says Dr. Fredrik Hiebert, a National Geographic Society archaeology fellow. “Why do you call it a crossroads of trade if there is a giant, massive, mountainous blob right in the middle of Afghanistan?” he asks. “Well, those mountains and those rivers are the best things to facilitate trade. Because what happened is you look at the mountains, and you see these valleys that go up into the mountains. Those are superhighways. You go up from the deserts, and you can go up through the mountains. It’s easy. You don’t really have to know too much about navigation.” Graveyard of Empires Afghanistan sat at a strategic juncture between the empires of Asia, eastern Africa, and southern Europe. Traders and travelers on the Silk Road could interact with the cultures of China, India, Persia, Arabia, eastern Africa, the Maghreb, and the eastern Mediterranean. “It is almost equidistant between the China Sea and the Mediterranean,” Hiebert says. Afghanistan’s central location on the Silk Road helped develop the region’s impressive wealth. “It was kind of mythical in the past, because it was very wealthy,” Hiebert says. “They not only had a lot of agriculture, they had a lot of animal wealth, because [the region] is really great for herding. And they had mineral wealth.” The wealth and cosmopolitan culture of Afghanistan’s trading outposts made them popular sites on the Silk Road. Settlements including Tepe Fullol, Ai Khanoum, Bamiyan, and Bagram (current site of the U.S. military’s Bagram Airfield) were bustling stops for traders. It wasn’t only trade goods, however, that moved across Afghanistan. Powerful ideas spread through the region. Trade, religion, communication, and political thought all interacted on the Silk Road. Buddhism, for instance, started in India and spread to Afghanistan before migrating to China, Hiebert says. Bamiyan, in central Afghanistan, was a Buddhist center with towering statues that dominated local cliffs before they were destroyed by the Taliban in 2001. “Those giant Buddhas were 200 to 300 feet tall,” Hiebert says. “Those were very easy beacons for traders.” Art, too, developed diverse influences. Greek architectural style, for instance, permeates the ruins of Ai Khanoum, an archaeological site in modern Afghanistan’s northeast. Ai Khanoum was conquered by Alexander the Great, and inscriptions to Greek gods such as Hermes and Heracles have been found on artifacts. ![ice.jpg](https://steemitimages.com/DQmW1pRzZ66gCTZgi4pjwVxzTHTgGqZyaj7HVawucchxECC/ice.jpg) The same elements that made Afghanistan so attractive to ancient traders also made it a target for conquest. “Once you have that kind of wealth,” Hiebert says, “the next thing you know is you have all these foreign people coming onto your soil trying to take it over.” But from the Greek forces of Alexander the Great to the British Empire of the 19th century, Afghanistan has proved to be nearly impossible to permanently conquer. The region’s climate and landscape have earned it the bitter nickname “Graveyard of Empires.” “First of all is that it is right smack dab in the center of Asia, and what that means is the climate is continental,” Hiebert says. “Continental climate means that it is not buffered by the ocean’s currents. So it is really cold in the winter, and it’s really hot in the summer. It’s a pretty tough place to be.” Historically, the region’s climate and landscape have also made it difficult for Afghans to unify. “Because the valleys are the main sort of thoroughfares, the country itself is kind of fractured,” Hiebert says. “There’s a lot of inter-valley competition. There is fighting.” New Silk Road Despite the civil and foreign wars that have defined modern Afghanistan for more than 30 years, Hiebert says he and other archaeologists take a longer view of history. “There is chaos and everything like that,” he admits. “[But] it is not at all the perspective of an archaeologist who is looking over the past 5,000 years.” Afghanistan has the resources to thrive once the country stabilizes, Hiebert says. He points out that one of the largest underground copper deposits in the world was just found in Afghanistan. Afghanistan has other natural resources that may contribute to a new Silk Road. “We like to think that the 21st century is the century where those old networks are going to be re-established,” Hiebert says. “It’s not silk anymore. It’s oil and gas.” Still, the archaeologist says, it may take Afghanistan years to recover from its long-running war and turmoil. “Let me leave you with this thought,” Hiebert says. “Afghanistan is a tough place, but you know what? Europe was tough after World War II. How long did it take after four years of social disruption in Europe? It took a long time to repair and recover. How long do you think it will take Afghanistan, that has had over 30 years of civil war? It is not going to happen overnight.” and

Read more about the Bactrian hoard here.\nBy Stuart Thornton\n\nWednesday, June 12, 2013\n\nThe Silk Road was an ancient, storied network of roads, trading posts, and oases that linked Asia and the Mediterranean basin. \n \nThe modern nation of Afghanistan was a major thoroughfare of the Silk Road. Today, the region continues to be a crossroads for concepts of ancient and modern, East and West, geography and history.\n \nAfghanistan is a land of rugged mountains, but its intimidating topography was actually beneficial to ancient traders, says Dr. Fredrik Hiebert, a National Geographic Society archaeology fellow. \n \n“Why do you call it a crossroads of trade if there is a giant, massive, mountainous blob right in the middle of Afghanistan?” he asks. “Well, those mountains and those rivers are the best things to facilitate trade. Because what happened is you look at the mountains, and you see these valleys that go up into the mountains. Those are superhighways. You go up from the deserts, and you can go up through the mountains. It’s easy. You don’t really have to know too much about navigation.”\n \nGraveyard of Empires \n \nAfghanistan sat at a strategic juncture between the empires of Asia, eastern Africa, and southern Europe. Traders and travelers on the Silk Road could interact with the cultures of China, India, Persia, Arabia, eastern Africa, the Maghreb, and the eastern Mediterranean.\n \n“It is almost equidistant between the China Sea and the Mediterranean,” Hiebert says.\n \nAfghanistan’s central location on the Silk Road helped develop the region’s impressive wealth. \n \n“It was kind of mythical in the past, because it was very wealthy,” Hiebert says. “They not only had a lot of agriculture, they had a lot of animal wealth, because [the region] is really great for herding. And they had mineral wealth.”\n \nThe wealth and cosmopolitan culture of Afghanistan’s trading outposts made them popular sites on the Silk Road. Settlements including Tepe Fullol, Ai Khanoum, Bamiyan, and Bagram (current site of the U.S. military’s Bagram Airfield) were bustling stops for traders. \n \nIt wasn’t only trade goods, however, that moved across Afghanistan. Powerful ideas spread through the region. Trade, religion, communication, and political thought all interacted on the Silk Road.\n \nBuddhism, for instance, started in India and spread to Afghanistan before migrating to China, Hiebert says. \n \nBamiyan, in central Afghanistan, was a Buddhist center with towering statues that dominated local cliffs before they were destroyed by the Taliban in 2001. \n \n“Those giant Buddhas were 200 to 300 feet tall,” Hiebert says. “Those were very easy beacons for traders.”\n \nArt, too, developed diverse influences. \n![ice.jpg](https://steemitimages.com/DQmW1pRzZ66gCTZgi4pjwVxzTHTgGqZyaj7HVawucchxECC/ice.jpg)\n \nThe same elements that made Afghanistan so attractive to ancient traders also made it a target for conquest.\n \n“Once you have that kind of wealth,” Hiebert says, “the next thing you know is you have all these foreign people coming onto your soil trying to take it over.” \n \nBut from the Greek forces of Alexander the Great to the British Empire of the 19th century, Afghanistan has proved to be nearly impossible to permanently conquer. The region’s climate and landscape have earned it the bitter nickname “Graveyard of Empires.”\n \n“First of all is that it is right smack dab in the center of Asia, and what that means is the climate is continental,” Hiebert says. “Continental climate means that it is not buffered by the ocean’s currents. So it is really cold in the winter, and it’s really hot in the summer. It’s a pretty tough place to be.”\n \nHistorically, the region’s climate and landscape have also made it difficult for Afghans to unify. \n \n“Because the valleys are the main sort of thoroughfares, the country itself is kind of fractured,” Hiebert says. “There’s a lot of inter-valley competition. There is fighting.”\n \nNew Silk Road\n \nDespite the civil and foreign wars that have defined modern Afghanistan for more than 30 years, Hiebert says he and other archaeologists take a longer view of history.\n \n“There is chaos and everything like that,” he admits. “[But] it is not at all the perspective of an archaeologist who is looking over the past 5,000 years.”\n \nAfghanistan has the resources to thrive once the country stabilizes, Hiebert says. He points out that one of the largest underground copper deposits in the world was just found in Afghanistan.\n \nAfghanistan has other natural resources that may contribute to a new Silk Road. \n \n“We like to think that the 21st century is the century where those old networks are going to be re-established,” Hiebert says. “It’s not silk anymore. titleWhat is a Robot?????
body![robot.jpg](https://steemitimages.com/DQmSc1BCbtfycPs4y4JQ5zMv7tZieTuF3LNTwj7kUus7XNa/robot.jpg) What is a Robot? Robots come in many different shapes and sizes. Whether they look like us or not, most robots have three essential ingredients that make them a robot. Together, these ingredients are what make a robot different from other machines and electronic gadgets you might have around your house. Photograph courtesy National Geographic Entertainment By Robohub Thursday, April 16, 2015 When you think of a robot, what do you see? A machine that looks a bit like you and me? The reality is that robots can come in many different shapes and sizes. They don’t need to look like humans—in fact, most don’t. What a robot looks like depends on its purpose. Flying robots might look like helicopters, or have wings like insects or birds. Cleaning robots often look like little vacuums. Robots that are meant to interact with people often have a face, eyes, or a mouth—just like we do! Whether they look like us or not, most robots have three essential ingredients that make them a robot: sensors, actuators, and programs. Together, these ingredients are what make a robot different from other electronics and gadgets you might have around your house, like your computer, your washing machine, or your toaster. Sensors, Actuators, and Programs First, a robot has sensors that allow it to perceive the world. Just like we have eyes to sense light, ears to sense sound, and nerves in our skin that sense if something is touching us, robots have light sensors and cameras so they can “see,” microphones so they can “hear,” and pressure sensors so they can “feel” the things around them. The kinds of sensors that a robot needs depends on what the robot was made for. A robot vacuum cleaner might use a bumper with pressure sensors to understand where a wall is. A flying robot uses a group of sensors called an inertial measurement unit (IMU) to help it stay balanced when it flies. Some of the sensors used by robots are very different from the kinds of sensors used by people. Second, a robot has actuators that allow it to move around. We might use our legs and feet to walk and run, and we might use our hands to pick up an orange and peel it. A robot might use actuators such as motors and wheels to drive places, and finger-like grippers to grab objects and manipulate them or turn them around. Third, a robot needs a program that lets it act on its own based on what it is sensing. This ability to act on one’s own is called autonomy. Let’s look at this idea of autonomy more closely. Autonomy Can you think of anything that has autonomy? People have autonomy, because they can decide for themselves how to behave or move—at least most of the time! Your toaster, your washing machine, or a remote-controlled toy are examples of machines that don’t have autonomy, because they depend on a person to make decisions for them. When a robot is autonomous, it’s not quite the same as a person being autonomous, because a person still has to write the computer program that tells the robot what to do. For example, when we listen to music, our brains are in charge of telling us how to move our own legs to the beat—we don’t need someone to move our legs for us! But what if we want to build a robot that can autonomously dance to a beat? What three basic things would we need? 1. Sensor. We would need a microphone (sound sensor) so that the robot could hear the music. 2. Actuators. We would need some actuators (like motors with wheels) so that the robot could move. 3. Program. We would need to write a program that says to the robot: “When you hear the music beat, move this way.” We would also need a computer—the robot’s brain—that could process all the sensory information and run the program, and some kind of power supply (like a battery) to provide electricity to our robot. The video above shows a simple robot that has been programmed to dance autonomously when it hears music. Check out those dance moves! Some robots are more advanced than our little dancing robot. Autonomous cars, for example, have advanced sensors that allow them to measure the distance to all objects in their environment and build a 3-dimensional (3-D) map of the area. They then have an advanced program that understands the meaning of the cars, roads, and obstacles in the 3D map. Based on this understanding, the program controls the robot’s speed and steering. Other robots are being designed to help at home, explore space, or improve our efficiency at work. Whatever their purpose, each robot will need a carefully thought-out set of sensors, actuators, and programs. While robots are becoming more advanced, it’s important to understand their limitations. How can they interact with humans in a natural way? How do they adapt to the real world, which is often full of unexpected events that are hard for machines to understand? And how can we make batteries that will keep them powered for long periods and that aren’t too heavy to carry around? These are the kinds of questions that robotics experts are working hard to solve. this is realty

titleA Sunken Slave Ship and the Search for Answers for you
bodyShackles From the Deep takes an innovative approach to explaining the slave trade ![watter.jpg](https://steemitimages.com/DQmYkkmH5AQ3tdp1FNZv1jEiBfnoLFMqXsmdjmt4asFntGp/watter.jpg) In his new book, Shackles From the Deep, journalist and scuba diver Michael Cottman explores the history of the slave trade by focusing on the journey of a single ship: the Henrietta Marie. By integrating the story of one slave ship with his own journey of discovery, Cottman humanizes the slave trade for young readers. He transforms the passive way slavery is traditionally taught into an active approach centered on curiosity and discovery. We had a chance to speak with Cottman before he began his book tour this month. He talked about his journey in writing the book, the importance of developing a passion, and the unprecedented partnership that made the discovery possible. Cottman’s journey started with his own desire to learn more about the Henrietta Marie, a British slave ship that sank in the Florida Straits in 1700. Like many colonial slave ships, the Henrietta Marie took part in the “Triangle Trade,” transporting slaves from West Africa to the Americas, raw materials (such as sugar or tobacco) from the Americas to Great Britain, and finally supplies and manufactured goods to British outposts in Africa. The ship had just completed a journey to Jamaica to deliver slaves when it was hit by a hurricane on its return voyage to London. The crew perished, and though there were no slaves on board, the shackles and chains that had held them sank to the ocean floor. Marine archaeologists discovered the shackles in 1972 and the ship’s bell in 1983. In 1994, Cottman decided he wanted to “retrace the Henrietta Marie’s steps” himself. As an avid scuba diver, he was in the perfect position to do so. International Business of Slavery As Cottman researched the Henrietta Marie by reading historic records, he became “overwhelmed with the fact that Africans were characterized as ‘cargo’ or ‘beasts,’ and never as humans.” While admitting how emotionally difficult the journey was, Cottman was driven by his passion to understand the history of his ancestors. He hopes the emotional aspect of his journey sends a message to young people about how important it is to develop a passion—to “wake up excited and find something you care deeply about.” Cottman explained that his work piecing together the history of the Henrietta Marie was also driven by a need for closure. He desperately wanted to gain an understanding of what motivated the everyday people involved in carrying out the slave trade. Through careful research, Cottman discovered the name of the British ironmonger responsible for crafting the shackles discovered with the wreck of the Henrietta Marie: Anthony Tournay. Looking at the motives of people like Tournay reveals that the slave trade was made up of ordinary men and women, capable of compassion in other circumstances, who were participating in what Cottman reminds us was “the international business of slavery.” Excavating the Henrietta Marie Excavating the wreck of the Henrietta Marie led to the recovery of over 22,000 artifacts. As Cottman notes, the Henrietta Marie is “believed to be the world’s largest source of tangible objects representing the early years of the African slave trade.” Some of the recovered items include glass beads, which were used “to barter for African people who would be traded into slavery,” and an encrusted cauldron used for cooking. The excavation of the wreck, as well as the creation of an underwater memorial plaque at the site, were carried out by members of the National Association of Black Scuba Divers and the predominantly white Maritime Heritage Society. The success of this partnership is what Cottman considers the biggest take-away of Shackles From the Deep. Cottman expresses his hope that readers walk away with an appreciation for “the power of different ethnic or racial groups to work together for a common purpose.” While in this case the common purpose was the excavation of a shipwreck, Cottman reminds readers that there are “many other purposes to come together on.” He emphasized that doing so requires “people interacting with people who don’t look like them, which is especially important in our expanding multicultural society.” Shackles From the Deep “is part detective, part mystery, part underwater exploration, and part personal journey,” according to Cottman, in which the “byproduct is learning about the slave trade.” Engaging students in a story about a shipwreck and underwater exploration lets the topic of the slave trade be presented in a dynamic way rather than what Cottman refers to as “the boring paperwork” approach that often overwhelms students. He concludes that “we were learning about and making history”, sending the critical message that history is a ongoing process that students can participate in. and many more

bodyhttps://steemit.com/science/@mobbs/flat-earth-the-end-debate created by @mobbs but then my reply started to be quite long to I decided to create entirely new post. Here it is! Major question Can NASA pictures be taken seriously as facts or are they just a (deceiving) art at best? Let's do some basic analysis to find out. All these pictures were taken TODAY and ONLY from NASA official pages - links provided and I just did basic analysis so you can see for yourself as it requires not much time or special skills. There is lot deception on the internet so it's very valuable when you can test things for yourself. All what I did you can do as well. NASA is presenting images over time (almost no videos - who could wonder - just few poor CGI animations) of space - Moon, Earth, etc. Presenting these images as the reality without strong statements that they are composites, CGI or strongly edited and manipulated is very harmful as you can see because it partially blocks you from entering alternative research and creates false impression of reality around us. Sometimes, after pressure and independent research they admit that images are not genuine reality but composites created by various methods. So is it reality or fiction? Let's put some of these most interesting images to test. Prerequisites image editor (Photoshop, Gimp, ...) internet access to NASA page Steps download image open it in image editor and play with some color features like Adjusting Color Curves to find out hidden flaws and image manipulation and traces of composing. Here you have some proof directly from NASA page, let's play and try find some differences, LOL. newer the images have more CGI look Moon terrain seems quite different and more artificial on newer pictures Earth seems much less realistic on 2015 image the oldest (1966) image looks most reliable from all of those due to lack of details and lack of CGI-feel ![moon.png](https://steemitimages.com/DQmQsHRCU5GgeqJravsvgGP46KRr9LnDEkzQHgTEAQg69Kh/moon.png)
