      "body": "The Machine-Payable Web is a third iteration of the internet.  Initially we had the World Wide Web: this version allowed people to access text and documents and then images and video, and to link between these using hyperlinks. Following that we now have the Social Web – where individuals are able to link together through social networks using likes, retweets or pokes. The Machine-Payable Web is a third wave of the internet – made possible by the existence of bitcoin, and/or other decentralised digital currencies. \n\nThis new conceptual framework for the internet was formulated and is eloquently presented by Balaji Srinivasan, the CEO of 21.co – the best funded bitcoin start-up in the world.  To understand it better I highly recommend you listen to his presentation on Youtube.    \n\n21.co enables the Machine-Payable Web by facilitating the addition of bitcoin on any device or app such that the device or app can act independently as an economic agent. A simple example is by enabling the user (or machine) running the 21.co software to earn micropayments in bitcoin for every http request, search or call for information.\nThere are many other examples of the Machine-Payable Web, particularly in digital currencies. For example if we take the digital currency DASH, in addition to traditional rewards for mining, users can also receive rewards for running and maintaining special servers called masternodes. The primary function of masternodes is to carry out the anonymization phase of the DASH protocol and to validate transactions almost instantly.  \n\nIn order to run a masternode, a user must put up 1000 DASH (approx. US$13,000) as something akin to collateral, though unlike traditional collateral, the DASH never leaves the user’s possession.  The reward depends on the number of masternodes in operation – the more nodes the lower the reward.  Currently the return on running a masternode is 11.8% per annum.  This is not a bad return in the context of negative interest rates on fiat fixed income assets!  Of course there are some server costs and users should have some expertise in DASH – although in this particular case the technical details can be delegated to an excellent service like Node40  - requiring users to simply provide a DASH wallet and put up the 1000 DASH as collateral. \n\nThe DASH rewards system is a very simple example of the early Machine-Payable Web in operation. Beyond DASH almost every digital currency offers the opportunity to earn rewards or income by providing computing power to a particular network and by doing some basic form of machine ‘work’ through verification or validation of information exchanges between machines. Beyond digital currencies we can anticipate the possibility of micropayments emerging for almost every form of digital information service, http request, API call, cloud storage, content and social network interaction. \n\nThe important insight to take away from this article is that bitcoin and other decentralised digital currencies enable machines to pay for goods and services and to hold, receive and pay money to each other – independently of human beings.  This means that machines can automatically distribute rewards, payments, dividends, coupons without reference to hierarchical human systems.  \n\nThe consequences of this dramatic new power, allied to the development of artificial intelligence, seem likely to be profound and very far-reaching.  In a utopian view this opens up an entirely new economy and means of financial interaction and asset ownership. The Machine-Payable Web is by definition frictionless, permission-less and democratic – in that anyone with computing power can earn digital currency without reference to human power structures. The dystopian downside may be that most human beings lose significant control over economic structures and decisions and a version of The Matrix beckons. \n\nNevertheless, given the increasingly bizarre structure of the current global financial system, with $14 trillion of bonds trading at negative yields, some sort of reset of the traditional system seems probable in the near future. From this reset it seems very possible that the Machine-Payable Web will emerge as a significant means of conducting economic transactions, at least in intangible goods and services. And that income flows from the Machine-Payable Web could replace traditional income flows from (mostly insolvent) issuers such as governments and financial institutions.\n\nAt a time when most people struggle to understand bitcoin itself, on the most basic level, the extensive (unintended) consequences of the existence of bitcoin and the rise of other decentralised digital currencies such as the creation of the machine payable web may take a long time to reach widespread adoption and acceptance, absent a major financial crisis.  Nevertheless the Machine-Payable Web is a reality today and seems to be slowly but surely taking root as the latest manifestation of the internet.  \n\n@adc555\n\nNote: I have not received any reward whatsoever from any of the service providers mentioned in this article.",

      "body": "Steem – justice for creators\n\nThe thing about digital currencies and associated ventures is that they either have a certain something that captures the public interest – or they fail completely.  This ability to seize the zeitgeist is very difficult to predict.  Despite the legions of haters, alive with Satoshi-envy, bitcoin has clearly captured the public imagination and continues to flourish as the number 1 cryptocurrency with a market cap of US$10bn.  Ethereum – the number 2 cryptocurrency with a market cap of US$1.2bn - also rose to prominence suddenly and dramatically in early 2016, assisted by the Vitalik Buterin ‘genius’ narrative – though recently this has been somewhat tarnished by  the very regrettable failure of The DAO.  \n\nA new cryptocurrency called STEEM has now jumped into the rankings at number 3 – the price having risen from approximately $0.25 a month ago to around $4 at the time of writing, giving STEEM a market cap of approximately US$360m.  Why the excitement? Steem appears poised to capture the network value effect by coming up with a way to reward content creators, that makes it better than all other blogging and social media platforms to date.  \nTo date the internet has forced creative bloggers, writers, artists and musicians to provide their intellectual talent for free in exchange for intangibles like ‘profile’ and the remote possibility of sharing in advertising revenues.  All the value is captured by monopoly platforms like YouTube and Twitter that expect participants and publishers to give their time for free – they harvest the creative content of publishers and the responses of users, package it and present the collective product as their own.  \n\nSteem changes this – Steem is a blockchain based social media platform. In Steem content uploaded to the platform is rewarded with the cryptocurrency STEEM as a result of users upvoting a post or article.  But users themselves do not directly pay for upvoting the post.  Steem has astutely identified that “the only transactions that users can approve without thought are ones that cost them nothing” – this is why tipping platforms do not work.  Steem seeks to reward every single participant in the platform who does anything positive with something (be it publish, like or comment a contribution, mine the token or provide liquidity). \n\nTo address the externalities and prevent the abuse and collusion that is prevalent in the traditional social media content creation model (e.g. buying 1000s of fake Twitter followers) STEEM as a cryptocurrency has a complex structure.  It is actually three interlocking tokens in one – like the Holy Trinity – all three parts are interdependent and intertwine. \n\nThere is STEEM, the tradeable token, which is intended for short term use on the platform – a liquid currency that is subject to fairly hefty inflation (in the form of rewards for publishers and participants) of some 100% per annum.  There is Steem Power (SP) – which can be understood as a form of untraded equity ownership in the Steem platform.  SP is non-transferable and is redeemable only over a 2 year period in exchange for STEEM.  For every 1 STEEM that is issued as a reward 9 STEEM are allocated to SP holders as an incentive for maintaining long term ‘equity’ ownership in the platform.  And there are Steem backed dollars (SBD) – which can be best understood as ‘convertible debt’ in the platform – a token that will always buy you 1 US dollar of STEEM at the time of ‘conversion’. SBD are intended to provide stability so that participants can easily and immediately understand the value of the reward on an ongoing basis.  \n\nSTEEM is a cryptocurrency so it is mined on a sort of ‘carousel’ basis by a succession of miners – to prevent the emergence of mining pools. Miners are also rewarded with STEEM. Liquidity providers between SBD and STEEM are rewarded for making a market.  Publishers of content are rewarded with STEEM depending on the number of votes and comments their article receives – as the sum of the crowd’s wisdom is greater than the individual parts the Steem algorithm rewards successful content in a geometric progression rather than on a simple arithmetical basis.  STEEM received by miners, liquidity providers and publishers vests over time – not immediately – in order to incentivise all participants to stay continuously engaged and maximise the value of the platform.         \n\nSteem is a fascinating, fantastic extension of the cryptocurrency world – seeking to solve the huge problem of unrewarded content and disintermediate the digital conglomerates that have a stranglehold on the collective value of humanity’s discourse.  Unlike bitcoin STEEM is not designed to be a long term store of value but rather a continuous monetary reward system for human ingenuity.  \n\nThe value of Steem tokens, in constant dollar terms, may not deliver returns as a financial investment, but this is not the purpose of this cryptocurrency – the aim is to provide a means for the collective creative brain-power of humanity to be appropriately rewarded, on a decentralised cooperative basis, rather than harvested by a small matrix of digital monopolies as is the case at present.",
