titleSigns from beyond - SWC
bodyNothing is more consuming than fire... My parents had nothing to do with what lead up to it, yet they were the ones losing their lives. Both eighty-four years of age, married for sixty-four and parents to three boys and four girls, of which I am one. One of those children, my brother Marcel, could never have anticipated that his friendly, casual demenor would lead to his beloved parents parishing in the flames set by a meaningless, jealous creature. And jealous of what? The woman this person had had for a couple of months and who didn’t want to spend her life with him, just happened to be friends with Marcel. Nothing more, nothing less. Instead of taliking with Marcel or his former female friend, this person started arsen attacks. First at Marcel’s home, then his shed, next the house of my parents, which went up in a blaze, leaving them trapped in their bedroom like rats. Infirm, having a stair lift and no way out of the first floor, they went up in flames, toghether with all their belongings among which my mother’s hand made dolls portraying Surinam’s history and her countless paintings and my father’s hours and hours of films. They had occupied the house exactly fifty years... I still wonder what this creature must have felt when he saw the flames, for he undoubtedly watched part of it. And then there were the news broadcasts, which he must have heard on the radio, or the articles that made it to all the newspapers. What does one feel when murdering two old people? Too cowardous to do it physically, but instead setting their house on fire, jeaperdizing the lives of the neighbours, traumatizing them for having heard my mother’s screams coming from the bedroom. Would this creature crawl away, thinking this was not what he had anticipated? That all he had wanted to do, was scare them, like before when he had hoped to have scared my brother? Only Marcel was not so easily scared. He proclaimed on social meda that all the alleged purpetrator  whose identity had been unknown to him until later  had done, was damage his worldly belongings. Things. Best would be if this person would come over and talk to him. Instead he set fire to the house of what my brother loved most in all of the world: our parents. My sister Evelyn, who lives in the same town as our parents and brother Marcel, was terrified. What if she and her husband were next? In my almost childish innocense I could not believe this person to go on after this tragedy. Even the police didn’t think he would act again. Silly us. And how wrong we were... He did go on. And he did turn to Evelyns house. Luckily she and her husband had taken precautions, leaving only the exterior of the house slightly damaged. Afther that, all Marcel’s direct family members and his female friend received 24/7 police security. When the next arson attack took place at the latter’s house, it all added up as to who the perpetrator might be. And when he showed up in the dead of night near her house, which is situated twelve miles from his own, on his bike, the police could finally arrest him. Evelyn had been writing a book and to find her peace in doing just that, she had resided to write at our parent’s house. While her story was about a slave woman in Surinam, she had long talks with our mother who knew an awful lot about the history. Originally from there, she had been lured to our country by my father, at the time a handsome young soldier. My mother was a white negro. Her mother was an unmarried half blood and her grandmother an ebony coloured Creole. Slavery stood at the root of my matriarchal family line. There had always been a strong sense of the occult in our family. My mother had told us about things happening in Surinam that could not be explained, telling us about winty’s and ghosts. Her claim that she had premonitions had always been laughed at by us as children. Yet we knew there was more to life than what we could see, so we instinctively really did believe there was some thruth to it. After the first two fires our mother had had a sense that someting dreadful was going to happen. She had been very scared for the life of Marcel, not seeing that it was she and my father who would pay with their lives. Both Evelyn and her husband Pete met my mother’s spirit in the aftermath. She visited them, lost in the world between the here and there. Lost in the agony of being unable to help physically. But she was there, almost ‘alive and kicking’  of which only the latter was true. Evelyn visited the sorry site almost daily. Rumaging through the rubble, even though it was a crime scene now and not really accessible. But the authorities turned a blind eye to the visits by the lost siblings of the unfortunate couple. Every time she went there Evelyn received signs from our mother. Like when she retrieved our parent’s marriage certificate from the rubble almost unscathed. Our mother, who had been a painter, sent self portraits and drawings that she had made of her mother and grandmother to her. Evelyn’s treasure trove grew. While we thought we had lost everything to the flames, it appeared that there still were some things worth keeping. Some half eaten by the fire, some hardly touched. The first time I set foot on the place, was with a film crew on a dreary day. If it had been up to me, I would never have gone there again for there was nothing there now. At least, that is what I thought. The overwhelming smell of burned goods hung in the air. The crew asked for our comments and I looked around, at the flowers people had left there in respect, the LP-records of my dad, bend and broken, papers, books, nothing worth saving. The huge mount of rubble. The knowledge that the air we were breating contained the remains of my poor mum and dad. I bend over to a magazine and opened it. The very first page we saw was and article that had a small illustration in it. A tomb stone with on it the words: Thou shalt not kill. I turned to the crew and said: “That’s my mother speaking.” We held meetings, somethings among ourselves, sometimes with the police, discussing how to proceed. During one of the private meetings we talked about my mother’s jewelry. Nothing posh, for our family has never been rich, but there were some golden necklaces that we would love to have had. But they had been in a cabinet on the first floor, one of the most affected area’s of the house. A few weeks later the remains of the house were taken down and the workforce had been asked to put things of any personal value aside. They did. And among the things retrieved was a badly burned trinket box of my mother’s. At her house Evelyn and I peeled it open, rescued some small artifact amongst which a mood ring which my daughter and I had given to my mother years before. It sent tears to my eyes and I have worn the ring for months, until it lost it’s silvery colour, only being a cheap little thing. We were really pleased with this finding, but lo and behold: the real jewelry case popped up as well, with my mother’s gold necklaces neatly wrapped in velvet cloth. It was incredible. Just like the finding of a diary of my father’s in which he had written down a whole year of his life in his neat handwriting. To us, these few things form a real treasure. Evelyn talked about the signs she received from our mother over and over again. Her husband had been just a little bit sceptic about that, but one night he lay in his bed, tossing and turning and unable to sleep. When he asked for a sign from her, all the alarms that he had had installed after the ordeal, went off. And they could only be silenced manually. Some sign! I myself have only had a visit from her once. A writer myself, I had tried to write down all the things that had happened to me and my family since the night of the fire. But I could not get passed the moment when I got home from the scene and rolled myself up in bed, unable to get warm under the blankets. Then, one night, some two or three months later, I couldn’t sleep. I felt unsettled, not really knowing what it was that bothered me. But then, all of a sudden, I knew: she’s here. She wants me to do something. And she did. She took me to that awful night and put me in her place. The evening before, a merry evening together with her neigbour for fifty years and the landlord who had come with flowers to celebrate the event. It had been my father who had written the landlord, telling him how extraordinary it was for a couple living fifty years in the same house, fifty years next to neighbour Emma, a widow for over twenty years now. His letter had had succes. When speaking to the landlord moths later, he was still moved to tears by having been the last person to have seen them alive. Old, but not ready with life by long. Then, after he had gone and after having watched the late night news, my father went to bed, later to be followed by my mother who never slept early. She prayed for my brother Ralf, the black sheep of the family. Fifty-six years old and still cared for by her and my father. His meals and groceries stood in the kitchen, ready to be taken to him first thing in the morning as they did every Friday. And she prayed for Marcel, a lifetime bachelor just like Ralf, asking God to spare him from evil. Then she saw a shadow passing by and she just knew it was the very evil she dreaded, lurking in the dark, awaiting his chance to cut Marcel’s cord. Yet she never once considered her own life to be in danger. Lying in her bed, hearing my father snore, she had only just dozed off, when she heard the fire alarm. It took a few seconds for her to place the sound, then she rushed out of bed to open the bedroom door. That had been a huge mistake, although in the end it didn’t really matter. They had no way out anyway. My mother showed me and let me feel what she had felt. The agony, the pain, the sheer fright. But she also showed me what followed. The light, the tranquility, the omnipresence of love and the promised peace that awaited her. She couldn’t let go, not straight away. But after a while, after having sent us all the love and belief she had in us children, it was time for her to let go forgood. For a while I had wished my mother to haunt the creature that was responsible for our misery. That she would use her unpleasant side  which she definitely had had during her lifetime  and make his nights as miserable as ours. But after that one night and after having it all written down, I changed that thought. I no longer wanted to disturb her. I’d rather let her rest in peace. The aftermath  the court cases, for they are seperated in two with the case of my parents still under investigation for lack of concrete evidence leading to arson  are no longer for her concern. That is for the living. Ghosts/hauntings

Too cowardous to do it physically, but instead setting their house on fire, jeaperdizing the lives of the neighbours, traumatizing them for having heard my mother’s screams coming from the bedroom.\nWould this creature crawl away, thinking this was not what he had anticipated? That all he had wanted to do, was scare them, like before when he had hoped to have scared my brother? Only Marcel was not so easily scared. He proclaimed on social meda that all the alleged purpetrator  whose identity had been unknown to him until later  had done, was damage his worldly belongings. Things. Best would be if this person would come over and talk to him. Instead he set fire to the house of what my brother loved most in all of the world: our parents.\n\nMy sister Evelyn, who lives in the same town as our parents and brother Marcel, was terrified. What if she and her husband were next? In my almost childish innocense I could not believe this person to go on after this tragedy. Even the police didn’t think he would act again. Silly us. And how wrong we were...\nHe did go on. And when he showed up in the dead of night near her house, which is situated twelve miles from his own, on his bike, the police could finally arrest him.\n\nEvelyn had been writing a book and to find her peace in doing just that, she had resided to write at our parent’s house. \nThere had always been a strong sense of the occult in our family. She had been very scared for the life of Marcel, not seeing that it was she and my father who would pay with their lives.\n\nBoth Evelyn and her husband Pete met my mother’s spirit in the aftermath. She visited them, lost in the world between the here and there. Lost in the agony of being unable to help physically. But she was there, almost ‘alive and kicking’  of which only the latter was true.\nEvelyn visited the sorry site almost daily. Rumaging through the rubble, even though it was a crime scene now and not really accessible. But the authorities turned a blind eye to the visits by the lost siblings of the unfortunate couple. \nEvery time she went there Evelyn received signs from our mother. Some half eaten by the fire, some hardly touched.\nThe first time I set foot on the place, was with a film crew on a dreary day. I turned to the crew and said: “That’s my mother speaking.”\n\nWe held meetings, somethings among ourselves, sometimes with the police, discussing how to proceed. To us, these few things form a real treasure.\nEvelyn talked about the signs she received from our mother over and over again. Her husband had been just a little bit sceptic about that, but one night he lay in his bed, tossing and turning and unable to sleep. When he asked for a sign from her, all the alarms that he had had installed after the ordeal, went off. And they could only be silenced manually. Some sign!\n\nI myself have only had a visit from her once. A writer myself, I had tried to write down all the things that had happened to me and my family since the night of the fire. But I could not get passed the moment when I got home from the scene and rolled myself up in bed, unable to get warm under the blankets.\nThen, one night, some two or three months later, I couldn’t sleep. I felt unsettled, not really knowing what it was that bothered me. But then, all of a sudden, I knew: she’s here. She wants me to do something. And she did.\nShe took me to that awful night and put me in her place. Old, but not ready with life by long.\nThen, after he had gone and after having watched the late night news, my father went to bed, later to be followed by my mother who never slept early. Yet she never once considered her own life to be in danger.\nLying in her bed, hearing my father snore, she had only just dozed off, when she heard the fire alarm. It took a few seconds for her to place the sound, then she rushed out of bed to open the bedroom door. That had been a huge mistake, although in the end it didn’t really matter. They had no way out anyway.\nMy mother showed me and let me feel what she had felt. The agony, the pain, the sheer fright. But she also showed me what followed. The light, the tranquility, the omnipresence of love and the promised peace that awaited her. She couldn’t let go, not straight away. But after a while, after having sent us all the love and belief she had in us children, it was time for her to let go forgood.\n\nFor a while I had wished my mother to haunt the creature that was responsible for our misery. That she would use her unpleasant side  which she definitely had had during her lifetime  and make his nights as miserable as ours. But after that one night and after having it all written down, I changed that thought. I no longer wanted to disturb her. I’d rather let her rest in peace.\nThe aftermath  the court cases, for they are seperated in two with the case of my parents still under investigation for lack of concrete evidence leading to arson  are no longer for her concern. That is for the living.\n\nGhosts/hauntings",
