      "body": "There are so many observed holidays of big and small magnitude throughout the year, so it’s highly likely that you wouldn’t know that today, June 3, is designated as World Bicycle Day. But considering all the ways in which bikes have been embraced, especially during the pandemic, not only as a means of transportation but also for fitness and to be outside without being too close to others, it’s one we should celebrate. You can expect “a full body workout consisting of high-intensity intervals, resistance-focused cardio and arm segments all packaged in a 45 or 60 minute rhythm-based cycle class” from their offerings. As an added bonus, they also give back.\nFor those outside of the city, Jazzy Spin is helping those in Long Island exercise while also being entertained. Founder and cycling coach Jazz “specializes in a unique cycle class turned up to a whole new level,” which is obvious to see from the hype workout clips on the IG page.\nKellie Hart’s RideWitUs not only is a physical bike shop on Slauson Avenue, but it’s also a bicycle club led by Kellie and six other leaders: Darrnell, Derrick, Kam, Mike, Rich, and Tone. The store’s mission is to “provide the community one-of-a-kind, high quality Fixies (and other bike types)” at a time when finding a truly great bike is hard, while the club seeks to get the Black community active and healthier. But the soaring demand for outdoor gear like boats and bicycles, plus disruptions in the supply chain, have made them a rare commodity. As prices rise, so do thefts. Ottawa police say they haven’t noticed a particular spike in boat thefts — they’re still relatively rare — but a report in April showed bike thefts were up 70 per cent from a year ago.\nRobert Bell, manager of Full Cycle on St. Laurent Boulevard, said, although he hasn’t noticed a surge this year, bike thefts have always been a problem in Ottawa.\n\n“The used bike market is just crazy. Prices are higher than they’ve ever been. There’s a shortage of bicycles so it would make sense there’s a demand for stolen bikes,” Bell said.\n\nReplacing a stolen bike can be tough. The new ones have all been snapped up.\n\n“Some of the bikes we ordered eight months ago aren’t coming in until next year,” Bell said. “I can’t just phone up a manufacturer and submit an order. Everything is spoken for.”\n\nEach year, about 1,000 bikes are stolen in Ottawa, according to Ottawa police. At an average cost of $700 a bike, that means the 5,000 bikes that have been reported stolen since 2016 have a combined value of $3.3 million.\n\nOn Victoria Day, three men, one of them armed with a knife, stole the bikes of two teenagers at the corner of Byron and Kirkwood avenues. Forty minutes later, a fourth man was seen selling one of the bikes at the corner of Baseline and Merivale roads.\n\nEven bikes stored in secured garages aren’t safe. This spring, condo owners in the downtown core reported locked bikes being taken from storage rooms.\nPolice have fought back against the thieves, with “Project Hot Wheels” recovering 44 stolen bikes last fall and this spring’s “Project Handlebar” recovering another 72. Registering your wheels with the website 529 Garage can improve your chances of getting your bike back if it’s ever stolen.\n\nAnd, while a kayak theft like what happened to McDougall seems unusual, Jason Yarrington of Trailhead Paddle Shack said demand for new kayaks and canoes was also through the roof.\n\n“We’ve already received more kayaks than we sold all last year and they’re already gone,” Yarrington said. “If we get a truckload of kayaks — that’s about 120 kayaks — they’ll be sold in three days.”\n\nMost of the kayak thefts Yarrington hears about have been from cottages, but that’s little consolation for McDougall, whose boat was stolen when she was parked for a short hike on the Crazy Horse Trail on March Road at Huntmar Drive. She can’t afford a new one, so she has started a gofundme to help get her back on the water.\n\n“They definitely knew what they were doing. Where I park at work and at home, there are cameras, so I’ve never been worried. The fact that I was on a trail off March Road — that’s a pretty busy road and to see someone taking a kayak off a car would look pretty suspicious,” she said.\n\n“I had it on my car all last summer and never had an issue. As the world warms, evapotranspiration will accelerate, speeding up the drying of land and vegetation. Weather patterns can also be affected: Increased evaporation from land can create droughts in some regions. This is a symptom of a warming world that can have major consequences for ecosystems and human societies as stress on surface and groundwater supplies increases.\n\n“Images of melting glaciers and shrinking ice sheets are a palpable way for us to understand the impacts of global warming,” said Pascolini-Campbell. “But dramatic changes are also happening to other key components of our planet’s water cycle that aren’t so visible, such as when water evaporates from the land before it can enter the rivers as runoff.”\n\nThe Gravity of Water\nTo get a global estimate of how evapotranspiration is changing, researchers found a new way to leverage data collected by the pair of Gravity Recovery and Climate Experiment (GRACE) satellites that operated from 2002 to 2017, and the successor pair, GRACE Follow-On, that launched in 2018. The GRACE mission was launched by NASA and the German Aerospace Center (DLR), and GRACE-FO is a partnership between NASA and German Research Centre for Geosciences (GFZ).\n\nBecause water has mass and therefore contributes to the Earth’s gravity signal, these spacecraft are exquisitely sensitive to the movement of water around the world, from tracking changes in ice sheets to water stored on land to variations in ocean mass. Seeing an opportunity, the researchers studied the 17-year dataset from GRACE and GRACE-FO to see if it was possible to tease out the gravitational signal associated with the movement of water by evapotranspiration.\n\n“With the combined record of GRACE and GRACE-FO, we now have a long-enough observational record to be able to monitor these critical signs of global change,” said JT Reager, a JPL scientist and an investigator on the study. “When the gravity signal decreases, it means the land is losing water. Some of that loss is through rivers flowing back into the oceans, but the rest of it goes up into the atmosphere as evapotranspiration.”\n\nBy subtracting all the water mass outputs from the inputs over land and then calculating the residual mass of water, the researchers were able to estimate the rate of evapotranspiration. They did this by subtracting independent estimates of global river discharge (in other words, the rate of water flowing through rivers to the ocean) and GRACE and GRACE-FO satellite data (that reveal the local changes in water mass on and in the ground) from global precipitation measurements to find out the mass of water being lost to the atmosphere.\n\nDue to observational and measurement challenges, global estimates of evapotranspiration are typically approximated using models or by taking measurements from individual locations and then scaling those measurements up. But these methods can be prone to error. By measuring global mass changes using gravity satellite observations, however, the researchers were able to get a more precise estimate for the rate of global evapotranspiration.\n\nUsing this method, they found that evapotranspiration increased from 405 millimeters (about 16 inches) per year in 2003 to 444 millimeters (about 17.5 inches) per year in 2019. That represents an upward trend of 2.30 millimeters (about 0.1 inches) per year –a 10% increase – with a corresponding uncertainty of 0.5 millimeters (0.02 inches) per year, or 2%.\n\n“For years, we’ve been looking for a way to measure gross changes in the global water cycle, and finally we’ve found it,” said Reager. “The magnitude of the evapotranspiration increases really surprised us: This is a sizable signal indicating our planet’s water cycle is changing.”\n\nThese results add to a growing body of research about our planet’s water cycle while also underlining the importance of continuity for Earth observations. Continuous satellite observations by satellites with a global view of water mass changes provide the long record necessary to observe the changing planet over the decades. These observations also help scientists track year-to-year variability in the water cycle caused by climate change and natural cycles.\n\nThe study, titled: “A 10% increase in global land evapotranspiration from 2003 to 2019,” was published on May 26, 2021, in Nature. Rain events can cause the colonies to wait until the next lunar cycle. The moon cycles are the primary drivers of these spawning events of cauliflower corals.”  \n\nShe and her colleagues hope the gametes will fertilize with nearby colonies, float to the surface, and within 24-48 hours produce larvae to reseed reef structures with new corals. \nCauliflower coral (Pocillopora meandrina) reefs in west Hawai‘i waters were heavily impacted by a 2015 mass coral bleaching event. Kramer explained, “We’re down to about 5% of the population of this species in West Hawai‘i. Cauliflower coral are especially susceptible to bleaching, so with that 95% loss of cover these spawning events are vitally important. We need to do everything possible to help these reefs recover through this natural reproductive cycle.”  \n\nResearchers have now recorded active spawning over the past five years. To give the coral recovery even more of an advantage, this year, in cooperation with the DLNR Division of State Parks, the parking lot at the bay was closed and people were asked to avoid going into the water before noon each day. \nAt the entrance State Parks Outreach Specialist Dena Sedar explained the reason for the closure to would-be snorkelers. “Everyone really understood the reasons not to interrupt the coral spawning. One of the biggest is to keep personal care products out of the water,” she said.  \n\nScientists say sunscreens form a surface on the water that interact with the coral larvae. Reef-safe sunscreen dispensers are scheduled to be installed at the Waialea Bay Section of the SRA later this year. \n\nDAR Aquatic Biologist Chris Teague commented, “It’s good to let them do their thing without people around as hopefully that allows more settling later on.”  \nSeeing the results of the spawning is tricky. “Some are carried off-shore and it could be a couple of months before they’re back down on the reef. They might settle back at Waialea, but the spawn could go elsewhere within the region or even across the state,” Teague added. \n\nThe spawning was light both days during the closure window. Yet, Kramer said, “I think minimizing the disturbance during these really sensitive times for the corals is definitely a good way to help protect the larvae and ensure they’re healthy.”  \n\nTeague concluded, “It’s great when we get to work with other DLNR divisions like State Parks, on a common cause.” DAR has also worked closely with the County of Hawai‘i and the Kahulu‘u Bay Education Center on the closure of the parking lot at that popular snorkeling site, which began Friday and continues until June 5.  KBEC Director Cindi Punihaole reported that coral spawning was observed at approximately 7:04 a.m. on Friday.\n\nWith the resurgence in tourism, coral experts are renewing pleas to ocean-goers to be aware of their personal impacts on marine environments. Use sun-protective clothing and head wear and use only reef-safe sunscreens. \n\nKBEC is a program of the Kohala Center and Lindsey Kramer is on contract to the State from the Hawai‘i Coral Reef Initiative. \n\nWhat it’s like to solo cycle through rural China\n\nSHANGHAI ― Marian Rosenberg doesn’t fit the profile of a Chinese “wanghong,” or influencer, and she never expected her solo cycling tours of rural China to draw a following. An American translator living in the city of Haikou since 2004, and China since 2002, Rosenberg has been exploring the country’s expanses by bike since 2005 — and mostly on her own starting from 2008.\n\nShe doesn’t fit the profile of a celebrity athlete, either. Now 40, Rosenberg has a collection of tattoos joining the scars she incurred at 20 years old when a swimming pool explosion shattered her leg. She requires a mobility aid after the accident rendered walking and standing permanently unpleasant.\n\n“I’ve been 65 years old since I was 20,” she says.\n\nAlong with culinary fare such as roadside noodles, her travels documented on TikTok and her blog mainly show her navigating propaganda from the 1960s through the 2000s with “occasional forays into old buildings and temple art,” Rosenberg says.\nRosenberg gets really excited when finding a legible remnant of former premier Jiang Zemin’s political theory “Three Represents\" from the early 2000s, or “recognizing that an educational slogan is part of the Two Foundations” campaign to universalize primary education in rural China, also from the early 2000s.\n\nHer TikTok captures a remote side of China, presented in fluent Mandarin under her Chinese name, Yue Meigui. Rosenberg also maintains an English-language cycling blog on Cycleblaze.com and a bilingual WeChat channel.\nRosenberg first took to cycling as a way to get around cheaply, and more comfortably for her injured leg, during her early years in Haikou. Before long, she was joining local cycling groups exploring the tropical island, and those grew into longer forays.\n“I like the independence of having my own transportation, the ability to go unusual places, and — most importantly — the ability to eat 6,000 calories a day and still lose weight,” she says. “No other form of vacation allows that.”\n\nIn November 2020, she documented her first trip after China’s coronavirus lockdown: a 2,097-mile tour from Haikou to Tianshui. That trip saw her followers climb to almost 30,000, with some posts nearing 3 million views — relatively small numbers, but enough to draw notice and sponsorship in the adventure-travel market.\nIn mid-March, she took to the saddle again, starting from Xi’an and heading roughly 3,100 miles to Beijing.\n\nThough a budding online celebrity, Rosenberg often has run-ins with small-town police, who arrive at most stops after being called by disconcerted hotels and locals who, she says, intend to move her along for the next village to worry about.\nSometimes, like last year on a steep mountain road in northern Guizhou, they come to Rosenberg’s rescue.\n\nMore often though, her determinedly countering the common but illegal practice of barring foreign nationals from low-cost accommodations can draw baffled cops for a familiar argument that Rosenberg usually wins.\n\nShe has even gamified the wrangling with police and hotels and made it into a point system. Before 2020, Rosenberg had accumulated a score of 123 victories to 6 relocations, five of which were of her own volition.\n\nRestrictions on where foreign nationals can stay were lifted in the early 2000s, and while any accommodation with a business license can register foreigners, proprietors in small towns assume otherwise. She advises travelers in China to utilize online booking giant Trip.com, which bears responsibility for any nationality-based cancellations.\nFollowing a national lockdown in early 2020, China had reopened by last summer, apart from specific outbreak sites, though some towns and tourist sites have stayed closed for longer and with stricter measures than officially mandated. Like in many countries, more remote parts of rural China see few outsiders, and fewer who are visibly foreign, let alone on a bike.\n\nThere was “more freedom of movement” before the pandemic, recalls Ellie Bouttell, a Shanghai-based British translator and editor who similarly tours around China alone, blogging about it at Chinapedlar.com.”\n\nBoth women opt to tour mostly alone out of an enjoyment of the solitude and of setting their own routes and paces.\nBouttell, who is more inclined to camp out than fight over hotel registration, says, “You draw a lot of attention as a White girl especially in rural areas, and if you’re obviously alone then it can feel threatening sometimes, even if the risk is low.”\n\nLong-distance touring remains a niche activity in China, for Chinese people as well as foreign cyclists, Justin Jencks says. The British American landscape architect who co-founded the riding club ShanghaiCycling.org says touring is mostly “groups of elderly Chinese and post-university, [with] nothing much in between.”\nJencks says covid has impacted cycling about “the same as any other travel,” with “restrictions on entry to some areas” and increased reluctance by some hotels to admit foreign nationals, with the same health codes as urban travel.\n\nCycling through rural China is “actually easy” now, Jencks says, with expanded ranks of English speakers plus phone translation, mapping and booking software. He says there are a few areas where foreigners aren’t allowed, such as around military sites, “but you normally just get politely turned out.” Overall, “people are extremely helpful and nice to people on bikes here.\"",

Since then orange has been the defining color of the gun violence prevention movement.\nTeska Frisby, the Mercer County lead for Moms Demand Action for Gun Sense in America, went door-to-door at the local businesses asking if they would put orange signs in their windows to support their cause. More than 90 percent of what they captured were hatchlings. To evaluate the status of American crocodiles in Florida, they measured growth, survival and body condition. The study used recorded salinity levels from nearby monitoring stations where crocodiles were in their natural habitats whether in freshwater estuaries, brackish waterways or in sea water along the coastal shoreline.\n\n\"Overall, there is a good sign of improvement, and they are doing better here than in other parts of the world in their range,\" said Briggs-Gonzalez. \"However, with increased freshwater flow and lower salinity, we expect to see further improvement in crocodile growth, body condition and survival.\"\n\nAmong the study's critical findings is how American Crocodiles in South Florida showed signs of shifting their traditional nesting locations to avoid areas of high salinity. Scientists found there were areas of high salinity mostly concentrated in Northeast Florida Bay, where water has been diverted to accommodate development.\n\n\"Historically, crocodile nesting occurred in Crocodile Lake National Wildlife Refuge and in Northeast Florida Bay within Everglades National Park with no known nesting in Cape Sable or Flamingo area until a canal was plugged in 1986 and the first nest was discovered the following morning,\" said Gonzalez-Briggs.\n\nSince then, the majority of nesting in Everglades National Park has moved to Cape Sable and Flamingo areas. The study area included Northeast Florida Bay, Crocodile Lake National Wildlife Refuge and Flamingo area in the Everglades National Park.\n\n\nScientists conducted 10,040 crocodile capture-and-release events. More than 90 percent of what they captured were hatchlings. To evaluate the status of American crocodiles in Florida, they measured growth, survival and body condition. The study used recorded salinity levels from nearby monitoring stations where crocodiles were in their natural habitats whether in freshwater estuaries, brackish waterways or in sea water along the coastal shoreline.\n\n\"Overall, there is a good sign of improvement, and they are doing better here than in other parts of the world in their range,\" said Briggs-Gonzalez. \"However, with increased freshwater flow and lower salinity, we expect to see further improvement in crocodile growth, body condition and survival.\"\n\nAmong the study's critical findings is how American Crocodiles in South Florida showed signs of shifting their traditional nesting locations to avoid areas of high salinity. Scientists found there were areas of high salinity mostly concentrated in Northeast Florida Bay, where water has been diverted to accommodate development.\n\n\"Historically, crocodile nesting occurred in Crocodile Lake National Wildlife Refuge and in Northeast Florida Bay within Everglades National Park with no known nesting in Cape Sable or Flamingo area until a canal was plugged in 1986 and the first nest was discovered the following morning,\" said Gonzalez-Briggs.\n\nSince then, the majority of nesting in Everglades National Park has moved to Cape Sable and Flamingo areas. The study reports that nests in Northeast Florida Bay are increasing at a slower rate.\n\n\"High salinity is not good for wildlife, especially those that require freshwater,\" said Briggs-Gonzalez. \"Now they have to endure salty water and crocodile babies need fresh water to survive. He realizes who Sasuke is almost immediately and before Boruto and Sasuke return to the present, he has Sasuke erase everyone's memory.\n\n9\nOhnoki's Twisted Will\nOhnoki loses his grandson when a band of rogue ninja attacks. Feeling responsible for his death, Ohnoki develops a plan to help prevent the loss of young lives. He develops beings that he can control to fight in the place of humans.\nOhnoki presents his idea to the Tsuchikage, but she rejects it immediately when the creations appear uncontrollable. Ohnoki, however, continues with his plan and his creations. Unchecked, the creations develop their own will and act out without Ohnoki's consent.\n\n8\nWhen Ao Saves Boruto\nAfter discovering the downed airship and Kara's vessel, Team 7, along with Mugino, are targeted by Ao. Ao works for Kara as their weapon, using his body to carry out their orders. The fight between Ao and Team 7 leads to Mugino's death.\n\nBoruto, angered by Mugino's death, fights Ao in a one-on-one battle. Boruto defeats Ao, but when Koji Kashin steps in, Ao uses a jutsu to push Boruto out of danger. Ao saves Boruto's life and then dies.\n\n7\nMitsuki Hitting Boruto With His Snake Lightning\nWhen Mitsuki suddenly disappears from the Leaf Village, Boruto and others grow concerned. His disappearance coincides with an attack on two gate guards. When the incident is investigated further, it is discovered that Mitsuki left with the assailants.\n\nUnable to accept that Mitsuki would willingly leave the Leaf Village, Boruto goes after him. When Boruto finally reaches Mitsuki, Mitsuki strikes him with his Snake Lightning. Shockingly, Mitsuki leaves Boruto and Sarada behind and continues on with Sekiei and Kokuyo.\n\n6\nKarin Being Sarada's Mother\necause Sarada knows very little about her parents' relationship and about her dad, she begins to ask questions. Sakura does not provide many answers for her, so Sarada decides to go find the truth for herself.\n\nSarada visits Orochimaru in hopes of finding out if Karin is her real mother. Seigetsu performs a DNA analysis on what they believe is Karin's umbilical cord, showing that Karin is indeed Sarada's mother. It's a rather shocking and emotional moment for Sarada and the viewers, although it is later discovered to be untrue.\n\n5\nThe Resurgence 7 Swordsmen Of The Hidden Mist\nWhen Boruto and his classmates take a field trip to the Hidden Mist Village, they run into a little trouble. Shizuma has assembled a band of misfits who want to reclaim the infamy of the Blood Mist Village.\n\nThe gang consists of six members, and Shizuma convinces Kagura to join them as the seventh member to revitalize the Swordsmen of the Hidden Mist. What's more shocking than a bunch of delinquents reforming the Seven Swordsmen group is how they got their hands on the seven powerful swords in the first place.\n\n4\nDeepa's Sudden Departure\nDeepa is a sinister character tied to the Kara organization. He proves to be an almost unbeatable opponent in battle, and he and Victor scheme together to reproduce the God Tree in the Land of Valleys.\n\nAfter his crushing defeat at Victor's facility, Kara obtains Deepa's remains to probe him for information. What's shocking is that Kara has the capabilities to fix Deepa's destroyed body, yet they just terminate him once they get the information they need.\n\n3\nKoji Kashin Getting Through The Sensory Security\nAfter the incident involving Deepa and Victor in the Land of Valleys, Konoha decides to tighten its security measures. They implement a new sensory security system to detect people's chakra. Any unrecognized chakra signature is flagged.\n\nWhen Koji Kashin and Delta arrive at Konoha to investigate Kawaki's whereabouts, Koji is able to enter Konoha without triggering the new sensory system. It's a surprising moment for fans of the anime and begs the question, just exactly who is Koji Kashin?\n\n2\nKawaki Protecting Naruto & Himawari\nThough Naruto only wants to protect him, Kawaki is untrusting, understandably so. Kawaki is unfamiliar with parental love, as he was abused by his biological father and adoptive father Jigen. When Naruto takes him in, Kawaki begrudgingly accepts.\n\nOver the course of his stay at the Uzumaki household, however, Kawaki's attitude begins to change. When Delta barges into Konoha and attacks them, Kawaki jumps in front of her attack to protect Naruto and Himawari. His sudden action is both a surprise to Delta and Naruto.",

Following Colombia’s confirmed infections in 2019, it appears the disease is spreading through Latin America, and biosecurity measures meant to contain the pathogen have been unsuccessful. Much in the way the world was caught off guard by the COVID-19 pandemic, the banana industry is ill-prepared for what is poised to be a catastrophic wipeout of commercial bananas. Hope rests heavily on a newly developed genetically modified banana variety, which promises to save our banana from commercial extinction, but it may not be that simple.\n\nTropical Race 4, or TR4, the fungal strain that causes Fusarium wilt, has been spreading across the world for the past few decades. For experts who care passionately about bananas and people whose livelihoods depend on them, watching disease reports creep across the globe has been like watching a train filled with bananas hurtling toward unavoidable wreckage, frame by agonizing frame. Despite experts sounding the alarm for years, minimal international biosecurity efforts have meant that the disease has leapfrogged across the globe, beginning in Taiwan, then moving across Asia and into Africa. For decades, plant breeders have been trying to develop a banana that would please consumers and be immune to TR4. They tested wild bananas and attempted to crossbreed inedible wild species with edible domestic seedless varieties to try and transfer traits of immunity. By most accounts, these methods have been largely unsuccessful.\nNow, the disease has touched down in Latin America, the primary exporter of bananas for markets in Europe and North America. Because the disease is often undetectable for up to two years, it is likely that TR4 exists in Latin America beyond Peru, Venezuela, and Colombia, waiting to be recognized and already steadily spreading.\n\nGood news came at the end of February, when Australian researchers announced a new banana genetically modified to be resistant to TR4. The team managed to insert the gene that makes one of the wild banana varieties resistant into a commercial banana, and the researchers are now hoping to continue to boost the new banana’s immunity using CRISPR. But how did the industry come to think of GM as its last and only hope?\n\nTo answer that, we have to return to a different banana era. Nearly all of the bananas that are imported to the United States and Europe are “Cavendish” bananas, as has been the case for decades. But the Cavendish is not the thoroughbred of bananas; the fruit bruises easily, its per-plant yields are lower than other varieties, and it requires extensive agrochemical inputs to grow. Among cultures that entertain dozens of market banana varieties, such as India, Southeast Asia, and Central America, the Cavendish’s popularity is low; it just simply doesn’t taste as good as a banana can taste. However, the Cavendish has dominated in one important area: immunity.\nIn the 1950s, the horse the banana industry backed was a variety known as Gros Michel or “Big Mike.” This was a dreamy banana: It was resilient, the fruits were large, and it tasted sublime. But it was nearly wiped out in Latin American plantations by TR4’s predecessor, Tropical Race 1; like TR4, the disease rotted plants from the inside and spread through contaminated soil. Nothing could clear the pathogen from the soil once a farm was infected, and the spores remain there to this day. So the Gros Michel banana was quickly replaced in the fields with Cavendish, which was immune to TR1. Unfortunately for the banana industry, Tropical Race 1 turned out to be just the first deadly pathogen to threaten bananas as we know them. TR4 emerged in Taiwan in the 1990s, this time with Cavendish in its crosshairs. (TR2 and TR3 emerged in the meanwhile, but they’re less virulent and don’t target the banana family.) And because the Cavendish bananas are seedless (wild bananas are chock-full of seeds, but many consumers don’t like them) and thus cultivated by suckers, the nearly genetically identical plants are even more vulnerable to the spread of disease. For many scientists, the solution seemed clear: If no one could find a banana that was resistant to TR4 and fit both consumer expectations and an industry built on paper-thin production margins, they’d have to make one.\nEnter CRISPR, the genetic editing technology. Early coverage of CRISPR technology focused on what it could mean for humans, with plenty of references to the 1997 film Gattaca. However, the food we eat is also a target. The GM Cavendish developed by the Australian researchers will have an easier path to markets in the United States, where it’s estimated that perhaps 75 percent of the food in our supermarkets has at least one genetically modified ingredient.\nWhile research so far supports a lack of adverse health effects due to GMs, there are still plenty of valid critiques of the technology’s production and regulation. And for all that GM foods may help, they still fail to change many of the systems that create the crises they swoop in to solve. Producing genetically modified foods is currently expensive and therefore requires the backing of large corporations, whose priorities lie in yields and profit, not biodiversity or the health of workers and the environment. Like many crops grown in monoculture systems, bananas rely heavily on the frequent application of agrochemicals. This growing practice has had long-lasting and catastrophic effects on the lives of plantation workers and surrounding ecosystems, but producing bananas in crowded conditions has also made them vulnerable, allowing disease to quickly spread unhindered by the healthy soils or biodiversity that usually serves as nature’s insurance policy. The researchers pursuing transgenic bananas are currently seeking a new banana that will tuck neatly into Cavendish’s slot in this system, without disturbing, or questioning, any of these other elements.\nThe banana giant Fresh Del Monte Produce has teamed up with the Australian university that developed that first TR4-resistant GM banana to fund a five-year project to perfect and test the new variety outside of laboratory greenhouses. And although Del Monte has made no announcement yet, it wouldn’t be unexpected for this new banana to be patented (as the TR4-resistant genes already have been), meaning that unless other banana corporations like Chiquita and Dole develop their own varieties, they will be at a significant disadvantage while their Latin American plantations wilt beneath TR4. And for hundreds of thousands of smallholder banana farmers for whom bananas are a cornerstone of food security, a TR4-resistant fruit may remain forever out of reach.",

But it was nearly wiped out in Latin American plantations by TR4’s predecessor, Tropical Race 1; like TR4, the disease rotted plants from the inside and spread through contaminated soil. Nothing could clear the pathogen from the soil once a farm was infected, and the spores remain there to this day. So the Gros Michel banana was quickly replaced in the fields with Cavendish, which was immune to TR1. Unfortunately for the banana industry, Tropical Race 1 turned out to be just the first deadly pathogen to threaten bananas as we know them. TR4 emerged in Taiwan in the 1990s, this time with Cavendish in its crosshairs. (TR2 and TR3 emerged in the meanwhile, but they’re less virulent and don’t target the banana family.) And because the Cavendish bananas are seedless (wild bananas are chock-full of seeds, but many consumers don’t like them) and thus cultivated by suckers, the nearly genetically identical plants are even more vulnerable to the spread of disease. For many scientists, the solution seemed clear: If no one could find a banana that was resistant to TR4 and fit both consumer expectations and an industry built on paper-thin production margins, they’d have to make one.\nEnter CRISPR, the genetic editing technology. Early coverage of CRISPR technology focused on what it could mean for humans, with plenty of references to the 1997 film Gattaca. However, the food we eat is also a target. (It remains to be seen whether the United Kingdom will retain these rules post-Brexit.) The GM Cavendish developed by the Australian researchers will have an easier path to markets in the United States, where it’s estimated that perhaps 75 percent of the food in our supermarkets has at least one genetically modified ingredient.\nWhile research so far supports a lack of adverse health effects due to GMs, there are still plenty of valid critiques of the technology’s production and regulation. And for all that GM foods may help, they still fail to change many of the systems that create the crises they swoop in to solve. Producing genetically modified foods is currently expensive and therefore requires the backing of large corporations, whose priorities lie in yields and profit, not biodiversity or the health of workers and the environment. Like many crops grown in monoculture systems, bananas rely heavily on the frequent application of agrochemicals. This growing practice has had long-lasting and catastrophic effects on the lives of plantation workers and surrounding ecosystems, but producing bananas in crowded conditions has also made them vulnerable, allowing disease to quickly spread unhindered by the healthy soils or biodiversity that usually serves as nature’s insurance policy. The researchers pursuing transgenic bananas are currently seeking a new banana that will tuck neatly into Cavendish’s slot in this system, without disturbing, or questioning, any of these other elements.\nThe banana giant Fresh Del Monte Produce has teamed up with the Australian university that developed that first TR4-resistant GM banana to fund a five-year project to perfect and test the new variety outside of laboratory greenhouses. And although Del Monte has made no announcement yet, it wouldn’t be unexpected for this new banana to be patented (as the TR4-resistant genes already have been), meaning that unless other banana corporations like Chiquita and Dole develop their own varieties, they will be at a significant disadvantage while their Latin American plantations wilt beneath TR4. And for hundreds of thousands of smallholder banana farmers for whom bananas are a cornerstone of food security, a TR4-resistant fruit may remain forever out of reach.\n\nBananas are far from our only monocrop. Many of the world’s staples rest precariously upon just a handful of varieties. And while genetic modification promises us another tool to fight pathogens, it’s worth reflecting on just how reactive this process is. As with the pandemic that has swept across the globe this past year, preventing the initial spread of the disease would have been far less expensive than trying to mitigate after it has established itself in several countries.\nHow soon after planting Cavendish 2.0 will researchers need to start developing another genetically modified banana for Tropical Race 5? What about Tropical Race 6? And this is to say nothing of the challenges that bananas face under climate change. Yields may drop globally by up to 50 percent by 2050, and it remains unclear how resilient a GM banana might be in that scenario.\n\nThere are ways of growing bananas, and other crops, that support biodiversity and soil health. One example is the agroforestry systems used by many Indigenous groups across Latin America. These systems allow space between plants and grow multiple banana varieties so that disease is far less likely to spread. But the temptation of a shiny technological fix—and short-term profits—frequently mutes the conversations about how such measures could be integrated into larger-scale banana production, or how the products of environmentally conscious growers could be brought to willing consumers abroad.\nOften, genetically modified foods are held up as a necessity to feed an ever-growing world, but what is less discussed is how the ways we grow that food actually exacerbate our problems. Industrial agriculture strips away topsoil, mandating the use of inputs like chemical fertilizers to replace lost nutrients. Growing genetically identical plants close together allows pathogens to spread quickly, decimating entire crops.\nIf bananas are a case study in the future of our food, we should think carefully about the framing of the case for GM crops. If the priority is short-term yields and band-aids against rogue pathogens, then GM is a step in that direction. But if long-term resilience and environmental health are in our sights, it’s worth reconsidering what efforts will get us there. A real solution will require a combination of strategies. For our banana, it is crucial to examine the biosecurity and monoculture methods that allow these diseases to spread so ferociously. Without significant changes, we’re just waiting for the next variant to take us by surprise.",

      "body": "After almost two decades at the corner of NW Market St and Ballard Ave, Matador is reopening at their new location today just down the street at the former Ballard Annex space at 5410 Ballard Ave NW.\nTo celebrate their move, Matador is rolling back happy hour prices to 2004 when they first opened: This weekend only, you’ll be able to get dishes for $3-$4, including their classic piled-high nachos.\n\nThe new location is far bigger than their original spot, with 5,000 square feet of dining space which includes a private events room, outdoor patio, and back bar fashioned into a Mexico City-esque mezcalaria.\nBallard Annex Oyster House closed during the pandemic, and the owners Zak Melang and Nathan Opper decided to move Matador into the bigger space rather than reopening the Annex.\n\n“Our team has put an incredible amount of effort and attention into the entire design of our new Ballard location,” Melang, co-founder of Matador said in a statement about the relocation. “All of our restaurant interiors reflect the craft, heart, soul, and sense of adventure that live inside every good bottle of tequila—and we are taking it a step further in our latest space.       "body": "Since 2018, Nilanshi Patel, from Modasa, Gujarat, India, has held the Guinness World Records title for the longest hair on a teenager. \n\nAt the time, she was 16 years old, and her hair measured 170.5 cm (5 ft 7 in).\n\nLast July, just before her 18th birthday, Nilanshi’s hair was measured for the last time and reached an incredible 200cm (6ft 6.7 inches), securing her the iconic title for the longest hair ever on a teenager as well.\nShe decided to stop having haircuts when she was six following a bad experience at the hairdressers. \n\nShe stuck by her decision for twelve years and previously described her long hair as her \"lucky charm\". \n\nBut after growing her hair for over a decade and earning three Guinness World Records titles, Nilanshi made the decision to cut off her locks.\n\"My hair gave me a lot - because of my hair I am known as the 'real life Rapunzel'... now it’s time to give it something back,\" Nilanshi said. \n\nIt took Nilanshi a while to decide what she was going to do with her hair after she had cut it. She was deliberating between three options; auctioning it off, donating it to charity, or donating it to a museum. \n\nShe discussed the decision with her mother, Kaminiben, who pointed out that that Nilanshi’s story and record-breaking hair was made to inspire people and that displaying her hair in the museum was the right thing to do. \nKaminiben then pledged that, in support, she would donate her own hair to charity, while Nilanshi sent hers to a museum. \n\nOnce Nilanshi had made the decision, the date was set and before she knew it, her hair was being sectioned and tied up ready to be cut. \n\n\"I'm so excited and a little bit nervous because I don't know how I'm looking in the new hairstyle... so let's see what happens, but I hope it's going to be amazing,\" Nilanshi said just before her life-changing haircut. \nBefore the first snip took place, Nilanshi kissed her hair goodbye and crossed her fingers for luck!\n\nIt was a nerve-wracking process for Nilanshi - and an emotional one too, as her hair had been such an iconic part of her identity for so long. \n\nBut after only a few short minutes the initial big cut was complete and Nilanshi went on to get her new, short locks cut and styled.\nOnce the new do was complete, Nilanshi was blindfolded, led to a mirror and had her new look revealed to her. \n\nLuckily, she was over the moon with it. \n\n\"Oh my god it's beautiful! It's amazing - I'm like a little princess!\"\n\nDespite Nilanshi's happy reaction, her mum Kaminiben couldn't help but say that she missed Nilanshi's hair.\nIt must have been strange for Kaminiben, who was used to helping Nilanshi wash, dry and comb her hair once a week - a very time-consuming task.\n\nKaminiben was the one who encouraged Nilanshi to continue to grow her hair and break world records. \n\nHowever, once Kaminiben got used to the drastic change, she said that Nilanshi looked beautiful with her new haircut. \nOnce all Nilanshi's hair had been cut, it was tied up into a bunch that weighed a total of 266 g (9.4 oz).\nNilanshi donated her hair to Ripley's.\n\nOnce it has been shipped from India to the USA it will be on display at Ripley’s Believe it or Not! She was deliberating between three options; auctioning it off, donating it to charity, or donating it to a museum. \n\nShe discussed the decision with her mother, Kaminiben, who pointed out that that Nilanshi’s story and record-breaking hair was made to inspire people and that displaying her hair in the museum was the right thing to do. \nKaminiben then pledged that, in support, she would donate her own hair to charity, while Nilanshi sent hers to a museum. \n\nOnce Nilanshi had made the decision, the date was set and before she knew it, her hair was being sectioned and tied up ready to be cut. \n\n\"I'm so excited and a little bit nervous because I don't know how I'm looking in the new hairstyle... so let's see what happens, but I hope it's going to be amazing,\" Nilanshi said just before her life-changing haircut. \nBefore the first snip took place, Nilanshi kissed her hair goodbye and crossed her fingers for luck!\n\nIt was a nerve-wracking process for Nilanshi - and an emotional one too, as her hair had been such an iconic part of her identity for so long. \n\nBut after only a few short minutes the initial big cut was complete and Nilanshi went on to get her new, short locks cut and styled.\nOnce the new do was complete, Nilanshi was blindfolded, led to a mirror and had her new look revealed to her. \n\nLuckily, she was over the moon with it. \n\n\"Oh my god it's beautiful! It's amazing - I'm like a little princess!\"\n\nDespite Nilanshi's happy reaction, her mum Kaminiben couldn't help but say that she missed Nilanshi's hair.\nIt must have been strange for Kaminiben, who was used to helping Nilanshi wash, dry and comb her hair once a week - a very time-consuming task.\n\nKaminiben was the one who encouraged Nilanshi to continue to grow her hair and break world records. \n\nHowever, once Kaminiben got used to the drastic change, she said that Nilanshi looked beautiful with her new haircut. \nOnce all Nilanshi's hair had been cut, it was tied up into a bunch that weighed a total of 266 g (9.4 oz).\nNilanshi donated her hair to Ripley's.\n\nOnce it has been shipped from India to the USA it will be on display at Ripley’s Believe it or Not!       "body": "Two bills that would make drivers’ lives a little easier at the toll booth and when they need to show a copy of their vehicle registration were approved by the state Assembly Thursday.\n\nOne bill, A 1153, would provide drivers with an electronic receipt when they pay a toll by E-ZPass on the state’s three major toll roads. The other would allow drivers to show a digital copy of their vehicle registration on a smartphone or other device, when asked.\nThe digital registration bill was unanimously approved by a 76-0 Assembly vote Thursday. The E-ZPass bill was approved by a vote 72 in favor and two against.\nThe Assembly passed a similar registration bill in Nov. 2019, which was sent to the state Senate transportation committee in January 2020, but it never progressed from there. This bill now goes to the state Senate.\n\nDrivers have been able to show proof of insurance on their cell phones, instead of using a paper insurance card under a 2015 law.\n\nBut currently, police only accept a paper Motor Vehicle Commission registration document as proof. Under the bill, both paper and electronic registrations would be accepted by authorities. Two other states, Michigan and Tennessee, allow drivers to show a digital proof of vehicle registration.\n\nSimilar to past legislation, by showing a digital registration a driver does not give consent for a police officer or judge to access any other contents on a smartphone, laptop or tablet the device.       "body": "In the future, when I reflect on that much-abused term “teamwork,” I’m not going to think about the 2019 Washington Nationals, the Red Hot Chili Peppers or even Googleplex. I’m going to think about Margaux Riccio and Shaun Sharkey, the couple behind a budding plant-based empire that isn’t trying to change the world (or your diet), only your idea of what a vegetarian meal looks and tastes like.\n\nI think it’s safe to say the pandemic has been a nightmare for almost everyone in the restaurant industry, but for Riccio, the pestilence has been a daily reminder about her condition. She has a rare genetic connective tissue disorder that, in her younger days as a line cook, compelled her to pop ungodly amounts of aspirin to manage the pain. Once she weaned herself off analgesics, Riccio discovered she was severely allergic to dairy products, which might have been a death sentence to a lesser chef, the kind who orders butter, cream and cheese by the pallet. Riccio just changed her approach and kept on cooking: She now re-creates some of her favorite dishes in plant form.\nOf course, some things can’t be changed with a simple shift in philosophy. Riccio’s illness has left her with a compromised immune system, which, for a coronavirus, is like oxygen to a fire. The chef basically went into hiding, forced to work graveyard shifts at Pow Pow, the couple’s first restaurant on H Street NE; or at home in a test kitchen that Sharkey built; or at the new Plant Food Lab on M Street NW, which the pair opened in the middle of the pandemic. The lab, incidentally, is also the temporary home to Riccio and Sharkey’s latest project, the kosher-certified Bubbie’s Plant Burgers and Fizz, which will operate as a takeout before migrating to Adams Morgan next year, with its own dedicated space and an expanded menu.\n“I haven’t seen my staff in a year,” Riccio says during a phone conversation. She doesn’t mean that literally. Riccio has seen her employees over daily Zoom calls, but for months, she hasn’t worked with them in person. This, as you can imagine, is no way to run a kitchen. You can’t taste the food that your cooks prepare, checking for seasoning, texture, flavor, all the components that make or break a chef’s reputation.\n\nEnter Sharkey who, during the pandemic, has served as Riccio’s surrogate palate.\n“I have to give all the credit to Shaun,” Riccio says. “He runs back and forth between both restaurants for me. He will be my taster. He’ll tell me what texture it is. They are both creatives who have managed to carve out space for their particular talents. She’s the chef. He’s the conceptual artist and designer. They’re both self-taught, learning their crafts in kitchens or, in Sharkey’s case, in the far-more-fickle music industry. He is, as his T-shirts announced in a recent Eater DC article, a “Nineties Rap Veteran.” He worked with names such as Eminem and Rick Rubin, and even released an album, “Sharkey’s Machine,” which critics either loved or loathed.\nSharkey has channeled his creative energies into building restaurant concepts, conceiving every last detail, including theme, interior design and the giftlike packaging materials. He was the one who dreamed up Bubbie’s, the vegan burger joint, which debuted as a pop-up in the Rock & Roll Hotel, the now-shuttered venue just down the street from Pow Pow. The way Riccio and Sharkey see it, Bubbie’s is to PLNT Burger what Lucky Buns is to McDonald’s. One is small and produces most everything in-house; the other has large, chainlike ambitions and relies on outside products.\n\nA large part of what makes Bubbie’s successful is that its innovations are born from necessity. Riccio may be a vegan by choice, but she’s also one by a twist of fate. She invents dishes to satisfy her own longings for the food she can no longer eat. She has engineered, often out of thin air, vegan versions of hamburger patties, fried chicken and nuggets, pulled pork, bacon and a variety of cheeses that she sells under the Vertage brand. Her cheeses have also found homes in other restaurants, including Cielo Rojo, Call Your Mother and Andy’s Pizza. Is it any wonder that she sleeps only four hours a night?\nThe burgers at Bubbie’s can be ordered with either the housemade patty or one from Impossible Foods, the same company that designed the meat-free Whopper. The custom patty — fashioned from chickpeas, beets, onions, red peppers and oats, among other ingredients — is a crimson disc that picks up some nice color from the grill. It’s also as soft as roasted squash, but I fear that is, at least in part, due to the fact that I could never manage to sink my teeth into a Bleu Bubb or Single Bubb within a minute or two of their preparation. I suspect these custom patties lose their consistency quick, as they absorb the moisture of their toppings and sauces.\nBut it could be that I just fit Riccio’s profile: Vegans, she says, prefer the housemade patty, because they’re not hung up on whether their burgers resembles the real deal. Flexitarians are hung up on such comparisons and, thus, gravitate to the Impossible patty, its engineered meatiness impervious to its immediate surroundings. I hate being so predictable, but count me as a fan of the Big Bubb, with its towering, twin stack of Impossible patties draped with housemade American cheese, all melty and shot through with Worcestershire sauce to boost its flavor.\nRiccio has developed ingenious recipes for both plant-based chicken and bacon. For the former, the chef discovered that tofu, once frozen, assumes the texture of chicken breasts, down to the slight stringiness of the meat. Her vegan bird, coated in a panko-and-spice blend, does a mean impersonation of fried chicken. I’m particularly fond of the Buffalo Fried Chick’n and the Chick’n Nuggets, which come with sesame ranch and agave mustard dipping sauces.\nThe chef really shows off her chops with breakfast sandwiches. Sandwiched between a grilled English muffin and dressed with a smoky housemade sauce, the burger comes together so completely (despite bacon with the texture of fondant) that you may not even think about its meat-based analog, which is really the whole point of Bubbie’s Plant Burgers.",

      "body": "I've never been a huge fan of banana-heavy desserts (except banana bread) — that is, until I tried these air-fryer caramelized bananas. Created by Lisa Kitahara of Okonomi Kitchen, the recipe is simple to make and tastes exactly like an indulgent dessert (or breakfast!) with only a little bit of added coconut sugar. The finished texture is unreal — soft and caramel-y, almost like a crème brûlée. Basically, as someone who doesn't even like banana pudding, this three-ingredient recipe yields one of the most delicious treats I've ever had.\n\nTo make this recipe, you'll just need bananas, coconut sugar, and lemon juice (seriously, that's it!). And I love that, unlike other desserts, it's easily scalable, since you can make as many or as few bananas as you'd like. Depending on the size of your air-fryer basket, you may want to seek out smaller bananas; luckily, large bananas fit in my Ninja Foodi perfectly.\nWhile you preheat your air fryer, slice the bananas in half from top to bottom and leave the peel on. A cure has not yet been found. “The banana is Ecuador’s second largest export product after raw petroleum and if banana exports would be hit, the impact would be huge,” says Hugo Castro of GinaFruit.\n\nIn Latin America, the TR4 variant of the fusarium disease was first detected in Colombia in 2019 and just a couple of weeks ago in Peru. Ecuador has plantations less than 300 kilometers from the northern Peru region where the fungus was confirmed on April 12. Machala, the capital of El Oro Province and the commercial heart of Ecuador's main banana producing region is just 45 minutes away from the Peruvian border. “It’s now just a matter of only months or a year until Ecuador gets affected by TR4,” said Castro. “Peru is a big trading partner of Ecuador and truckloads of products like onions, rice and potatoes are coming in daily, carrying a lot of soil/dirt with them. These crops are insensitive to TR4 but still can carry the disease with them and spread it to other crops.”\nExtreme measures, no united front\nThe government has taken extreme measures and set up checkpoints at all border crossing points. Every truckload is being checked and the measures include sterilizing containers and trucks as well as putting stricter phytosanitary rules in place for the import of banana plant material. In addition, online conferences are hosted to educate about Fusarium.\n\n“What we do at GinaFruit is a lot of disinfection and putting security measures in place. Also, with our Rainforest and or Global Gap regulations we already follow a lot of protocols,” said Castro. “An example is that we have specific tools and materials for each farm and those don’t leave the farm. We also have truck disinfection systems, as well as biosecurity arcs for people.”\n\nHowever, GinaFruit and most of the banana producers in Ecuador, are surrounded by smaller farms that generally have a lack of information and don’t always know what enters their farm. “The lack of information could be caused by farmers not reading the news or simply not having the economic capacity to put the right protocols in place. Unfortunately, the Ecuador banana industry does not have a united front with producers, exporters and government sitting together and making a plan.”\n\nCoping and living with the threat of Fusarium\nSome countries like Australia and the Philippines have been dealing with the Fusarium TR4 strain already for twenty to thirty years. “They know how to handle it and learned to live with it,” said Castro. “One of the solutions is to share more knowledge and best practices with each other and send our people over there for training and education. Another solution would be to develop a new banana variety that is resistant to Fusarium. However, this can take many years.” he added.",

      "body": "A cow on the loose in a residential street was hit and killed using a police van after officers struggled to bring it under control.\n\nThe cow, which is understood to have escaped from a nearby farm, was spotted wandering around roads in Woodley, Berkshire, on Thursday evening.\n\nA police vehicle was later filmed colliding with the animal.\n\nThames Valley Police said the cow had charged and injured a woman and one of its officers.\n\nA witness told the BBC police hit the cow with a vehicle four times and were \"clearly trying to kill it\".\n\nA force spokesman said the measures it took were necessary to protect the public.\n\nResident Shana Tolsma said she became aware of the loose cow after posts on Facebook and initially considered the incident to be amusing.\n\nShe said the cow later charged at a man at a bus stop and police were seen trying to find a way to box it in and bring it under control.\n\nHowever, Ms Tolsma said she was shocked when she saw officers use a van to ram the \"scared looking\" animal as it walked on Wokingham Road.\n\n\"It was hit four different times,\" she said. \"They were clearly trying to kill it - that's for sure.\n\n\"It wasn't like they were trying to subdue it and return it to the farmer.\"\n\nShe said the sound of the cow \"mooing and crying\" after it was hit was \"horrible\".\n\n\"I literally started crying - the police could have done this in so many different ways and everyone was just in shock,\" she added.\n\nLocal residents posted their shock at the animal's death on social media, with many asking the police to explain their actions.\nHowever, others also commented in support of the officers, with one person posting on a Facebook community page that: \"It was getting ridiculous the slating the police were getting last night and this morning. As a result, this program provides hands-on, individualized assistance to ranchers that can make a meaningful difference to their operations.”\n\nIn 2020, the educational sessions were transitioned to a virtual format, which is being maintained this year, providing the opportunity to expand to a larger geographical region and reach a larger group of producers. The June sessions will provide basic knowledge about mineral nutrition along with tools to help producers successfully monitor mineral consumption and make adjustments to increase consumption.\n\nThe second part during the summer includes the submission of forage and water samples to Ward Laboratories, which has partnered with Extension to provide a discount for participants to get their samples analyzed. Once the Extension personnel receive the results, they will work with the participants to interpret the results and determine what changes could be beneficial to the operation.\n\nThe third component that is critical to the success of the program is ranch visits. This provides an opportunity for the participants to share their specific situation and challenges with the Extension personnel one-on-one to find solutions or simply fine-tune what they have been doing.\n\nThe series concludes with educational sessions in the fall, where all of the information that has been shared during the previous five months is brought together in an applied format.\n\nTo date, the “Mineral Nutrition for the Beef Cow Herd” series has drawn participants from 79 operations, plus 22 industry and Extension personnel from South Dakota, North Dakota, Minnesota, Colorado and Illinois.\n\nThe program is open to beef cattle producers in North Dakota, South Dakota, Montana and Wyoming.
