I just can't take it anymore!\" \n\nThe screeching sound of Gloria's voice was like a hot wire on my nerves, instantly bringing back unwanted memories of our past marriage. Feeling the instinctive urge to yell back rise in my throat, I pulled the phone away, swallowing my poisonous desire to respond in kind. Only when the line went silent did I dare bring the receiver back up to my face. \n\n\"Gloria, please,\" I finally replied, trying my best to sound calm. \"She can't be all that bad. She's eighteen years old for Christ sake! She's bound to want to live a little.\" \n\nI heard a sharp intake of breath and knew instantly it was the wrong thing to say. For a moment, Gloria sputtered in rage, sounding very much like she was choking on a chicken bone. When she finally became coherent enough to speak, her voice was dripping with venom. \"I swear Hank; it would be just like you to think it okay for a young woman to act like a whore! Honestly, she must be getting this from your side of the family! I certainly never acted like a tramp, eighteen or not!\" \n\nThat was true enough. Gloria had a puritanical streak that would have impressed Mother Teresa. Had I known that before, I never would have married her. By the time I did, our only daughter was thirteen years old.\n\nAs much as I loved Mindy, being subjected to Gloria’s constant bitching proved to be virtually impossible, and I more or less missed the five years of Mindy's life. It had only taken those few minutes on the phone with Gloria to prove she hadn't changed a bit in the years since. \n\nI couldn't begin to imagine how hard it must have been for Mindy! Having Gloria as a mother must have been suffocating for her. After less than five minutes on the phone with my ex-wife, I agreed to let my daughter come and live with me. \n\n*** \n\nMindy pulled up in her Mini the next morning, just as I was leaving for work. I gave her a key and told her to feel free to make herself at home in the guest room. Just seeing her face light up when she saw me, and hearing the happiness in her voice, was all the proof I needed that I had made the right decision. \n\n\"Are you sure you won't need any help?\" I asked, ready to call off from work if she did. \n\n\"No, I'll be okay, daddy! I have most of my clothes packed, and there are only a few other things I need to bring. You go on, and I'll see you tonight! I'll even make you dinner.\" \n\nHearing her the pure joy in her voice put an instant smile on my face. She was so happy and full of life that I couldn’t understand how Gloria could ever think such terrible thoughts about her. Never the less, Gloria’s loss was my gain and part of me thanked God my ex was such an unmitigated birch. \"All right sweetie,\" I replied with a chuckle. \"That sounds great. We'll talk more tonight. Have a good day, and promise me you won't get into another fight with your mother, okay?\" \n\n\"Okay, daddy, I promise. She just makes me so crazy sometimes!\" \n\n\"I know, Mindy. Believe me, I know.\" Waving goodbye, I reluctantly headed off to work. \n\nI couldn't help but look back through the mirror as I drove away, smiling happily as Mindy unloaded a box from her car. From what Gloria told me about her recent behavior, I'd almost expected her to show up, half-dressed, with an inch-thick layer of makeup on! Now that I'd seen her, I had to laugh at myself for ever having believed any of it. \n\nNot that Mindy wasn't a beautiful girl, because nothing could have been further from the truth. At five-foot three, Mindy was both slim and athletic. She possessed the same, lustrous blond hair that first attracted me to her mother. That morning, she had it bundled up in a way that was just wild enough to be cute. Her deep blue eyes sparkled with youth, instantly expressing her every thought. Wide and alive, they complimented her tanned skin and soft features in a way that would have made her age difficult to guess if I hadn't already known. \n\nWhat relieved me most was the fact that she wasn't wearing any noticeable makeup at all. As for the skimpy and inappropriate clothes her mother spoke of, there was no sign. Her faded jeans and yellow cotton pullover did look good on her, but there was certainly nothing at all suggestive in her attire. She seemed every bit the normal, well-adjusted young woman of whom I'd always been proud. \n\nMy worries being dispelled, I grimaced at the things Gloria said about her the night before, and I decided my ex' had finally lost her mind. “How could she treat her own daughter like that?” I silently screamed. “She really is one, crazy-ass bitch!” \n\nI was fuming in anger as those negative thoughts rolled through me, but I took a deep breath and resolved to put them out of my mind. The only thing that mattered was having Mindy back in my life. The last thing I wanted was to let Gloria ruin it for either of us. \"At least Mindy doesn't have to put up with her craziness anymore!\" With those last words spoken aloud, I gave myself a mental pat on the back for being my daughter's hero, and thought no more about it as I hit the freeway on my way to work. \n\n*** \n\nMindy settled in over the next week, and while my work schedule meant we only saw each other in the evening, there was nothing in her behavior to give me pause. The first hint that something might be amiss was how much ready cash she seemed to have on hand. I had already noticed the late model import she was driving, but considering the hefty sum I paid for child support over the years, I'd convinced myself that Gloria must have put at least some of it to good use. What a laugh. This was Gloria I was talking about! I should have known better than to believe that. \n\nThe last time I'd asked, Mindy was waitressing at a local restaurant. As the week wore on, however, she showed no signs of actually having a job. By Thursday night, I was strongly inclined to ask her about it. \n\nEven then, I hesitated. I knew her mother must have been grilling her about every part of her life, and the last thing I wanted to do was to make her feel that nothing had really changed. It wasn't until Friday that I started to see that things were not quite adding up. \n\nWhen I came home that night at six, Mindy had dinner ready, as she had all week. While we ate, she casually asked how my day went. She listened attentively as I rambled on about things in which she couldn't possibly have any interest. She was charming, and I found myself dominating the conversation without ever having a chance to ask her much of anything. Finally, as she began clearing the table, I found the moment I'd been waiting for. \n\n\"So Mindy, what about you? Are you still working over at RJ's Steakhouse? You haven't gone out all week.\" I did my level best to make my interest seem like nothing more than idle curiosity, but by then, I was hearing Gloria's accusations echo through my thoughts, and I was desperate to have Mindy prove her wrong. \n\n\"No, daddy,\" she said with little interest. \"I quit there after graduation. I'm not old enough to serve drinks yet, and I wasn't getting tips as a hostess. Besides, I hate red meat, and the smell was making me sick.\" \n\nMindy picked up my plate and headed for the kitchen as she spoke, leaving me alone before I could pursue it further. Still, she'd only given me a partial answer, and by then, I really felt she was deliberately trying to be vague. When she returned, my tone was a bit more direct. \n\n\"So, are you working now? And what about school? Are you planning your classes for the fall?\" I'm sure I was beginning to sound a bit exasperated, but while I didn't want to pry too much, I felt I had a right to know what her plans were. \n\n\"Yeah, I'm working at the Kensington Plaza. It's just part time, and mostly at night, but I get a share of the tips.\" \n\n\"The Kensington? Isn't that the new casino they opened last year? Suck on them until they begin to fall apart and non longer have any flavor.  Repeat as much as needed. \n\n2.\tTurmeric, Salt and Cayenne Gargle for sore throat and swollen glands.\nThis not-so-tasty, but oh-so-effective remedy is great for preventing a full-blown sore throat or swollen glands, if you are able to catch the soreness in time.  If not, it is also anti-inflammatory and surprisingly soothing when the soreness is high.  Once again this remedy contains all of the necessary properties of being anti-inflammatory, antibacterial, antiviral and expectorant.  Allowing the mixture to penetrate for localized treatment is very powerful as well, and works best if the soreness is more superficial, rather than deep down into the throat. \n\nDirections: Mix 1/2 tsp of turmeric, 1/4 tsp of salt and one pinch of cayenne pepper in 1 cup of warm water.  Stir thoroughly.  Use this as a gargle, as you tilt the head back fully and gargle for 10-20 seconds (or longer) and spit out.  It is recommended to let a small amount trickle down the throat to coat any deeper infectious areas.  Repeat this 3 times in a row and perform every 6 hours or as needed for prevention or treatment of a sore throat or swollen glands. \n\n\n\n\n3. Ginger Juice for nausea.\nAlthough ginger is great for fighting infection, this remedy is specific for the nausea and dull appetite that often accompanies illness.  If you are lucky enough to have a juicer, this is the most powerful way to extract the juice.  However, if you do not have one, you can still utilize this remedy by creating a powerful and potent decoction (see directions below).  Either way, this remedy is sure to penetrate through the dull, heaviness that accumulates in the stomach, increase the digestive force and clear out and toxins in the gut. Whether bacterial or viral by nature, this infusion is quite effective for preventing a illness or treating an already manifested sickness.  A few of its mighty health benefits includes immune boosting, digestion enhancing,anti-inflammatory, antimicrobial, expectorant and febrifuge (reduces fever). It relaxes the muscles and the mind, and is great for any aches that often accompany the flu.  It even is beneficial for coughing, as it also relaxes the respiratory tract which is often constricted and stressed during times of coughing spasms.  Finally adding some essential oils can help promote healing even further. \n\nDirections:  Fill the tub with moderately hot water.  While filling, add 1/3 cup of ginger powder and 1/3 cup of baking soda and mix until fully dissolved.  Relax in this ginger bath for at least 15 minutes or until you break a sweat.  ***If there is respiratory issues add eucalyptus, peppermint and sweet orange essential oils (optional).  If there is fever and flu, add tulsi, sweet orange and rosemary essential oils (optional).\n\n6. Mahasudarshana Churna, the Ayurvedic antibiotic.\nIf you are sick of resorting to antibiotics but need powerful relief, this traditional Ayurvedic formula is the answer.  In fact, it not only fights bacterial infections, but also treats viral, fungal, parasitical and any other microbial infection.  Although extremely bitter and not so pleasant to take, it is well worth it when you are feeling under the weather.  This formula is a natural detoxifier that can be used in any flu, cold, sore throat, nausea, sinus infection and fever.  It is great for both Pitta and Kapha and is a powerful liver tonic.  Just as many of these other remedies, this formula is anti-inflammatory, antimicrobial, expectorant and immune boosting by nature. \n\nDirections:  During sickness take 1/2 tsp in warm water every 3-4 hours.  Once the symptoms have reduced, continue to take the same dosage, but reduce to 2-3 times daily.  Take continuously until 3 days after the final symptoms have ceased to prevent the illness returning.\n\n7. Immaculate Immunity Tincture for cold, flu and fever.\nThis is another bitter tonic, although this formula comes in a powerful herbal extracted tincture form and can be easier to take than the previous recommendation.  This tincture has been formulated to treat any illness from bacterial to viral, whether cold, flu, fever, sore throat, nausea or sinus infection.  For times of extreme sickness, I actually will take both the Mahasudarshana Churna and the Immaculate Immunity tincture, in perfect antimicrobial harmony!\n\nDirections: This formula works best when taken at the first onset of symptoms, before the illness manifests. At this time take 3-5 dropper-“full” (one dropper equals one squeeze) every 3-5 hours for prevention.  During the illness, increase the dosage to 5-7 dropper-full every 2-3 hours.  Once the symptoms have decreased or subsided, it is recommended to continue taking 2-3 dropper-full, 3 times daily for 3-7 days, to prevent any recurrence of the illness.\n\n8.
