| body | I think the Celtics were going to have a great season this year whether they made this trade or not. Danny has been desperate to get a superstar onto this roster, and while I preferred trying to draft our own (with the Brookyln pick), Danny obviously preferred the known quantity in Kyrie. Either way excited for the upcoming season. |

| body | Kyrie is a heck of a player, I do agree with you, and while almost all fans would take Kyrie over IT, the general consensus around the NBA about this trade was that the Celtics payed a lot, perhaps a bit too much. Also your point about IT's struggles in the playoffs aren't an opinion, it's a fact, albeit with a very small statistical sample size to back it up. Glad you enjoyed the post. |

It is one thing that people don't take into consideration when complaining about judges, they only get to see the fight from one limited angle, at times they can't see punches landing and so therefore can't in good conscience, score them. |

| title | Manchester United vs Manchester City: The Race for Supremacy |
| body | Five games in and it is only alphabetical order separating the two Manchester clubs, City and United, at the top of the Premier League title. The much-anticipated showdown between Pep Guardiola and Jose Mourinho appears to have dawned at long last. After five assignments, the record is identical: four wins, one draw, sixteen goals scored, two conceded. It is early days, of course, and Chelsea are within one victory of the two Manchester clubs while Tottenham also lie in wait but there is an unmistakable sense that the major players in the title race this season will come from the North West. The squads Both sides are now blessed with a staggering depth of quality in attacking positions. The creative forces such as Henrikh Mkhitaryan and Kevin De Bruyne are glistening early on, while Romelu Lukaku and Sergio Aguero are punishing opponents in brutal fashion. Guardiola was able to introduce Leroy Sane, Bernardo Silva and Ilkay Gundogan from the bench at Watford while Anthony Martial, Ander Herrera and Jesse Lingard influenced the flow of the game for Mourinho as United ran riot late on at Old Trafford. The two teams take their opponents apart in different manners. City want complete dominance and on the days it all comes together, it is truly magnificent – perhaps the highest level of football we have seen in this league since Arsenal's Invincibles. United, meanwhile, are more pragmatic. They are prepared to bide their time before pulling away late on, as they have done against West Ham, Swansea, Leicester and again on Sunday against Everton. The remaining question mark about City is whether their defence will hold out and if Nicolas Otamendi and John Stones can forge a strong partnership. Vincent Kompany, sadly, is back on the treatment table. Over the past week, which has seen City score 15 and concede 0 in three games against Liverpool, Feyenoord and Watford, the pair have been strong, allowing City's opponents a total of five shots on target. |

| title | Canelo vs GGG and The Solution to Judging |
| body | Two impressive specimens finally took to the boxing ring last weekend to determine who currently is the best in boxing. The fight showcased a back and forth exchange of true efficient boxing technique with a side salad of power. A few weeks earlier the promoter of this battle Oscar De La Hoya was perplexed and hurt by the Floyd Mayweather vs Conor McGregor, taking to social media to write “F*** YOU #MayweatherVsMcGregor BOTH OF YOU ARE DISRESPECTING THE SPORT OF BOXING #CaneloGGG Sept 16th,” wrote De La Hoya. _1.jpg) Clearly the Golden boy promoter was rattled not by the fight but by the revenue it was to and did produce. That fight was less than a month before Canelo vs GGG and he knew the spotlight had been snatched away. A lot of fans would have to choose which fight to buy on PPV and with Conor and Floyd being bigger stars it was highly unlikely the Canelo GGG fight was going to match those numbers. The pressure was now on for two of the biggest names to put on a battle for the ages to help save the reputation of boxing. De La Hoya knew it, Canelo and GGG knew it also. The fight was masterful and going in to the 12th and final round the boxing world could hold its head firmly aloft brimming with pride at what these two warriors had produced. When the final bell tolled both combatants raised their arms in celebration as did the people who bought the PPV who could justify the payment. Now it was up to the judges who had dissected every one of those 12 rounds to score the fight using the "10 must system". The most widely used scoring system since the mid-twentieth century is the "10-point must system", so named because a judge "must" award ten points to at least one fighter each round (before deductions for fouls). Most rounds are scored 10-9, with 10 points for the fighter who won the round, and 9 points for the fighter the judge believes lost the round. If a round is judged to be even, it is scored 10-10. For each knockdown in a round, the judge deducts an additional point from the fighter knocked down, resulting in a 10-8 score if there is one knockdown or a 10-7 score if there are two knockdowns. If the referee instructs the judges to deduct a point for a foul, this deduction is applied after the preliminary computation. So, if a fighter wins a round, but is penalized for a foul, the score changes from 10-9 to 9-9. If that same fighter scored a knockdown in the round, the score would change from 10-8 in his favor to 9-8. Adalaide Byrd, who has developed a reputation for debatable scoring, had the Mexican Canelo winning 118-110, a score which baffled most observers and put her at odds with her fellow judges. Judge Dave Moretti scored the bout 115-113 in favour of the still unbeaten Golovkin, while Don Trella scored it 114-114 to create the split decision draw. Yet across the five rounds that Moretti and Trella scored for Golovkin, Byrd awarded each round to Alvarez. The standing ovation the two fighters received had now morphed into boos and jeering. The fight that had saved the sport was now being viewed as a debacle. Why? Because the three human beings at ringside viewed things a little differently. Fights fans and former pros alike wanted Byrds head on a post, some blamed De La Hoya for fixing the fight in favor of his favorite son Canelo and others just scoffed " pfft, typical boxing". No one seems to of mentioned the real issue here....HUMANS. I am not sure if anyone has been watching for the last few thousand years but we are prone to mistakes. Why we still choose people to judge fights is in my opinion ridiculous. Not 2 minutes after the fight a beautifully constructed table by compubox showed punches thrown, landed and more importantly what power punches landed onto their opponent. So, here is an idea, just use these statistics to score the fight instead of judging. In soccer, football, basketball, hockey, baseball, darts, cricket and tiddlywinks their is no judging, it is quite simple, you score the most points you win the game. Now back in the 1100s there was no compubox, no iPhone X and probably no flushing toilets. However, there is now. So lets text each other, lets flush after we go and lets use the technology available to quantify and simplify the fight game so this does not happen again. The viewers at home, the people in the audience and interestingly the fighters themselves would know if they are up or down. Just as you do in every other sport that is non combative. A situation like this would never ever happen again. picture credits boxingscene.com hbo.com thesun.co.uk |

When the final bell tolled both combatants raised their arms in celebration as did the people who bought the PPV who could justify the payment. \n\n\n\nNow it was up to the judges who had dissected every one of those 12 rounds to score the fight using the \"10 must system\". The most widely used scoring system since the mid-twentieth century is the \"10-point must system\", so named because a judge \"must\" award ten points to at least one fighter each round (before deductions for fouls). If that same fighter scored a knockdown in the round, the score would change from 10-8 in his favor to 9-8.\n\nAdalaide Byrd, who has developed a reputation for debatable scoring, had the Mexican Canelo winning 118-110, a score which baffled most observers and put her at odds with her fellow judges.\n\nJudge Dave Moretti scored the bout 115-113 in favour of the still unbeaten Golovkin, while Don Trella scored it 114-114 to create the split decision draw. Yet across the five rounds that Moretti and Trella scored for Golovkin, Byrd awarded each round to Alvarez.\n\n\n\nThe standing ovation the two fighters received had now morphed into boos and jeering. The fight that had saved the sport was now being viewed as a debacle. Why? Because the three human beings at ringside viewed things a little differently. Fights fans and former pros alike wanted Byrds head on a post, some blamed De La Hoya for fixing the fight in favor of his favorite son Canelo and others just scoffed \" pfft, typical boxing\".\n\nNo one seems to of mentioned the real issue here....HUMANS. I am not sure if anyone has been watching for the last few thousand years but we are prone to mistakes. Why we still choose people to judge fights is in my opinion ridiculous. Not 2 minutes after the fight a beautifully constructed table by compubox showed punches thrown, landed and more importantly what power punches landed onto their opponent.\n\n\n So, here is an idea, just use these statistics to score the fight instead of judging. A situation like this would never ever happen again.\n\n\npicture credits\nboxingscene.com\nhbo.com\nthesun.co.uk",

| title | The Ladyboy Killer of Muay Thai |
| body | It has been training as usual for Nong Rose ahead of her fight with golden era legend Kompayak Singmanee. The unlikely duo are set to battle it out for 2.5 million Baht (US$75,300) at Rajadamnern Stadium on Wednesday. Nong Rose made her debut at Rajadamnern Stadium as a transgender in June of this year. With Muay Thai Stadiums' strict rules requiring short hair, no shirts worn during competition, and with women not even being allowed to touch the ring, Nong Rose’s appearance was huge in Thailand. The entire Muay Thai world stopped for a moment, and gasped as the lipstick wearing, hair braided, and sports bra donning Nong Rose entered the ring. Nong Rose had competed at Thailand’s oldest stadium once before – but as a boy. She has identified as being transgendered for as long as she can remember, but didn’t really start to fully embrace her identity until high school. In her debut, back in June, Nong Rose defeated the gamblers’ favourite Sua Yai Chor. Haapayak via points, taking home a 900,000 Baht (US$27,000) side bet. She fought again at Rajadamnern in July, this time against the stadium stable’s Priewpak Sor Jor Vichitpadriew, also winning on points, albeit just marginally. So when it came time again for magic matchmaker OneSongchai to summon up a fight worthy of the headlines, he first called Olympic boxing gold medalist and former Muay Thai fighter, Somjit Jomjorhor. He was offered 300,000 Baht (US$9,000) to fight Nong Rose, but the gold medalist wanted more money. OneSongchai moved on, this time reaching out to notorious hardman, and part time fighter Gong Muangmeen. Gong recently made the headlines by taking on a one-round fight for a five million Baht (US$150,000) side bet at Lumpini Stadium. He also declined the offer. While the money was good, we’re guessing Gong might not have fancied getting beat up by the “Ladyboy with the Mean Knees”. So now former Lumpini champion Kompayak will take his chances against Nong Rose. Originally the fight was set at 114lbs for Nong Rose and 116lbs for Kompayak, but an agreement has since been reached to allow Kompayak to skip the weigh-ins. the 48-year-old Kompayak will be making his return to the ring after a 20-year absence while Nong Rose is very much in her prime. The odds are locked in at 3-2 and on August 2, both teams arrived at Rajadamnern to put deposits on the massive side bets required for the fight. Kompayak’s team has agreed, come fight day, to produce one million Baht (US$30,000), whereas Nong Rose’s team are required to put down 1.5 million Baht (US$45,000). Kompayak is considered to be more skillful and to have a better fight IQ than his opponent – the overwhelming majority are still favouring the youthfulness of Nong Rose. |

Haapayak via points, taking home a 900,000 Baht (US$27,000) side bet. She fought again at Rajadamnern in July, this time against the stadium stable’s Priewpak Sor Jor Vichitpadriew, also winning on points, albeit just marginally.\n\nSo when it came time again for magic matchmaker OneSongchai to summon up a fight worthy of the headlines, he first called Olympic boxing gold medalist and former Muay Thai fighter, Somjit Jomjorhor. He was offered 300,000 Baht (US$9,000) to fight Nong Rose, but the gold medalist wanted more money.\n\nOneSongchai moved on, this time reaching out to notorious hardman, and part time fighter Gong Muangmeen. Gong recently made the headlines by taking on a one-round fight for a five million Baht (US$150,000) side bet at Lumpini Stadium. He also declined the offer. While the money was good, we’re guessing Gong might not have fancied getting beat up by the “Ladyboy with the Mean Knees”.\n\n\n\nSo now former Lumpini champion Kompayak will take his chances against Nong Rose. Originally the fight was set at 114lbs for Nong Rose and 116lbs for Kompayak, but an agreement has since been reached to allow Kompayak to skip the weigh-ins.\nthe 48-year-old Kompayak will be making his return to the ring after a 20-year absence while Nong Rose is very much in her prime.\n\nThe odds are locked in at 3-2 and on August 2, both teams arrived at Rajadamnern to put deposits on the massive side bets required for the fight. Kompayak’s team has agreed, come fight day, to produce one million Baht (US$30,000), whereas Nong Rose’s team are required to put down 1.5 million Baht (US$45,000).\n\nKompayak is considered to be more skillful and to have a better fight IQ than his opponent – the overwhelming majority are still favouring the youthfulness of Nong Rose.\n\n",

| title | THE FIGHT THAT CHANGED HISTORY - American Kickboxing VS Muay Thai |
| body | “The Fight That Changed History” took place during a time period where Muay Thai was still relatively unknown to the west, getting its epic name due to its colossal impact on North American Kickboxing and Muay Thai. At the time of this bout, American Kickboxing was at the height of its popularity, and it was essentially a mix of traditional karate and western boxing. Benny Urquidez, Peter Cunningham, Jean Yves-Theriault, Don Wilson, and Rick Roufus were all some very notable names under these rules, which included modified rules with no low-kicks, clinching, elbows, and knees. Coming from a family rich of martial art roots, Rick Roufus had conquered the American Kickboxing world with an undefeated record. Other American Kickboxing champions had ventured into stylistic fights with modified rules, with Benny Urquidez being the most notable – Japanese Kickboxing rules resembled Muay Thai much more and “The Jet” conquered it. Despite Benny Urquidez’s legendary bouts in Thailand and Japanese Kickboxing, those weren’t bouts televised to a large American audience. Urquidez spoke of it in magazines and interviews, but the effectiveness of low-kicks wasn’t so well understood by most American fighters. This point is best illustrated by how Benny “The Jet” Urquidez was a hero to Rick Roufus — it was during one of Urquidez’s bouts that Rick’s father gave him an identical fight name. Despite this, Rick came in unprepared for low-kicks and for good reason: the rules were announced last minute and to defend low-kicks is an art in itself. Changpuek was born and raised in a small village some 30 km from the town of Prakhonchai, Buriram in northeastern Thailand, one of seven children. A young Changpuek became attracted to Muay Thai from watching local fighters and started training at home alongside his brothers under the tutelage of their father. He had his first fight at 14 and by 18 had left home to join the Kiatsongrit Gym in Bangkok, where he would remain for more than sixteen years. Changpuek fought at the lower weights in his early years spent on the Bangkok circuit, weighing as little as 49 kg (108 lbs) on his Rajadamnern Stadium debut. After fighting for a number of years in Thailand, Changpuek found it increasingly difficult to get fights domestically as his weight (70 kg) was not typical for a Thai where competitive bouts tend to be at the lower weights. As a result, he started to fight abroad. Changpuek Kiatsongrit, whose name translates to “Crazy Elephant,” had never fought above 150 lbs in Thailand. Yet, there he was, going overseas against an opponent who was over 200 lbs! Not only that, but he would have to completely abandon elbow and knee strikes, which he had trained in all his life. The first round was dominated by Roufus. His size and superior punching shattered Changpuek’s jaw and knocked him down twice. Changpuek recovered, and unleashed a barrage of kicks that battered Roufus’s legs to where he was limping around the ring in the fourth round. Kick after kick landed, and the referee stopped the fight in the fourth. Roufus couldn’t even get himself off the ground, giving Changpuek a shocking TKO victory. Rick Roufus’ younger brother, Jeff “Duke” Roufus, dismissed Kiatsongrit in a post-fight interview. He said that it doesn’t take any talent to perform leg kicks, and the rules didn’t allow his brother to win. Yet, most of the rules were in Rick Roufus’ favor. Changpuek couldn’t throw elbows, knees, or clinch without the referee separating them, which is devastating to a smaller fighter. So how did a larger, stronger, faster fighter get dominated in this fashion? How did a Tae Kwon Do black belt get beaten by kicks to the point that he had to be carried out of the ring on a stretcher? Most will point to the rule change, but this is only somewhat true. This logic doesn’t explain why Roufus was inexplicably unable to check Kiatsongrit’s leg kicks during the fight. After all, Roufus was a black belt, and even wore his belt during the fight. How was he unable to defend against such a basic martial arts technique? The obvious but overlooked answer: he trained under Full Contact rules for most of his life. Under these rules, he wasn’t permitted to use leg kicks, so its unlikely that he and his trainer spent a lot of time drilling leg defense in practice. training muay thai in thailand pad work Why didn’t American kickboxing allow kicks to the leg? Some would say that it was attempt to limit injuries, but the truth is that they simply weren’t profitable. During the 1970s and 1980s, boxing was still the king of fight sports and no one wanted to see punching exchanges ended by leg kicks or matches slowed down by clinch fighting. Elbow strikes were considered too violent. Keep in mind that unlike boxing and wrestling, Eastern martial arts still hadn’t found a place in the American sports landscape. The only real exposure the average American had to Eastern martial arts were movies featuring Bruce Lee (Kung Fu), Steven Seagal (Aikido), Chuck Norris (Karate) and Jean-Claude Van Damme (Karate). But their over-the-top violence didn’t translate well in competition. Headbutting, throat punches, or limb-breaking would never be accepted in a civilized society. This is probably why American Karate and Tae Kwon Do tournaments used point fighting, where one had to strike a designated area, fighters would be separated, and the ref would award a point. However, these tournaments also had the problem of being slow, and the average American consumers wouldn’t pay to watch them. The Full Contact format, with its dazzling spinning kicks and combination punching gave young Americans who wanted to compete their chance to shine, while at the same time giving off a safe and marketable appearance to the American public which hadn’t seen much of western kickboxing and certainly hadn’t seen Muay Thai. Fighters such as Benny “The Jet” Urquidez (Karate), Rick and Duke Roufus (Karate/Tae Kwon Do), Don Wilson (Karate), and Dale “Apollo” Cook (Karate/Tae Kwon Do) became the standard-bearers for American kickboxing during the 70s and 80s. Kickboxing had found a small but devoted niche in the U.S. as young men eagerly signed up at their local gyms hoping to follow in the footsteps of their heroes. But the path taken by aspiring American kickboxers in their air-conditioned, well-lit dojos was a far cry from the open air, terribly hot and humid gyms of Thailand-gyms that, arguably, no westerner would actually pay to train in. While Americans stopped using roundhouse kicks, clinch fighting, and elbow strikes—they were illegal in competitions—the Thais were sharpening all of these skills for their competitions. Seeing how different the martial arts upbringing was between Changpuek Kiatsongrit and Duke Rufus, Rufus’s inability to stop Changpuek’s barrage of roundhouse kicks makes more sense. Both men trained for competition, but what sold as “kickboxing” was very different in their respective countries, and on that fateful night in Las Vegas, their differences became painfully clear for Rick Roufus.
