| title | Mountain Climbing at Obudu Mountain Resort |
| body | <center> </center> During my visit to the Obudu Mountain Resort some weeks back, I had the most incredible experience. One of my most enjoyable activities was mountain climbing. The resort is located on the Obudu Plateau in Cross River State, Nigeria, about 1,600m above sea level. Because of this, there are many surrounding mountains and hills. Mountain climbing was one of the first activities we did after arriving at the resort and the sights were really breathtaking. Some places were so high you could see the clouds passing right beside you. Safe to say this was one of the best experiences of my life and it has definitely left me hungry for more adventure. --- For the best experience view this post on [Liketu](https://liketu.com/@gamsam/mountain-climbing-at-obudu-mountain-resort) |

| body | <div class="text-justify"> <center> Source: [Unplash](https://unsplash.com/photos/LyuO4HcFJfM)</center> Eating disorders are becoming increasingly common in society today. This is a worrying trend, as eating disorders can have serious health implications. There are a number of reasons why eating disorders are becoming more prevalent. One reason is the increased pressure on people to be thin. In our society, there is a lot of emphases placed on appearance, and being thin is often seen as being more attractive. This pressure can lead people to develop eating disorders in an attempt to lose weight. Another reason for the increase in eating disorders is the way that the media portrays thinness. In the media, we often see images of very thin celebrities and models. This can give people the impression that they need to be thin to be successful or happy. The increasing prevalence of eating disorders is a cause for concern. We need to educate people about the dangers of these disorders and provide support for those who are affected by them. The reasons above are an explanation for one of the most common eating disorders out there - Anorexia nervosa. It is the most talked about eating disorder and many people out there think it is the only one. Actually, I used to think so myself until about five years ago in medical school. There are several types of eating disorders, all with different symptoms and severity levels. Anorexia nervosa, bulimia nervosa, and binge-eating disorder are the most common. Anorexia nervosa is characterized by extreme weight loss and a refusal to maintain healthy body weight. People with anorexia may have a distorted view of their body weight and shape, thinking they are overweight even when they are dangerously thin. They may limit the amount of food they eat or exercise excessively to prevent weight gain. Anorexia can be life-threatening if not treated. Bulimia nervosa is similar to anorexia in that people with this disorder also have a distorted view of their body weight and shape. However, instead of restricting food intake, people with bulimia engage in binge eating followed by purging behaviours like self-induced vomiting or excessive exercise. These behaviours can be just as dangerous as anorexia and can lead to electrolyte imbalance, heart problems, and even death. Binge-eating disorder is characterized by frequent episodes of overeating followed by feelings of guilt, shame, and embarrassment. People with binge-eating disorder often eat large amounts of food even when they’re not hungry and feel powerless to stop eating once they start. Binge-eating disorder is the most common eating disorder in the United States. <center> Source: [Unplash](https://unsplash.com/photos/LyuO4HcFJfM)</center> --- ### Bulimia Nervosa Bulimia nervosa is an eating disorder characterized by binge eating followed by compensatory behaviours such as purging. Purging can be done by vomiting, using laxatives, or exercising excessively. Bulimia nervosa is a serious mental illness that can lead to physical complications such as dehydration, electrolyte imbalance, and heart problems. People with bulimia nervosa often have a distorted body image and may see themselves as overweight even when they are not. The disorder typically starts during adolescence or young adulthood and can become a chronic condition. Bulimia nervosa is more common in women than men and usually occurs in people who have a family history of the disorder or other eating disorders. Treatment typically involves a combination of cognitive-behavioural therapy and medication. With treatment, most people with bulimia nervosa are able to recover and live healthy lives. --- The symptoms of bulimia nervosa Bulimia nervosa can lead to serious health complications, including electrolyte imbalances, dehydration, and heart problems. The symptoms of bulimia nervosa include recurrent episodes of binge eating followed by purging. Purging may be done by self-induced vomiting or the use of laxatives, diuretics, or enemas. Binge eating episodes are characterized by eating an unusually large amount of food in a relatively short period of time and feeling out of control during the episode. People with bulimia nervosa often feel disgusted and ashamed of their behaviour and try to keep it a secret. They may feel like they can't control their eating behaviours and that they are powerless to stop. As a result, people with bulimia nervosa often suffer from low self-esteem, depression, anxiety, and social isolation. <center> By Office of Women's Health. Public Domain, [Link](https://commons.wikimedia.org/w/index.php?curid=41220700)</center> --- #### The causes of bulimia nervosa There are a variety of possible causes of bulimia nervosa, including both psychological and environmental factors. Psychological factors that may contribute to bulimia nervosa include low self-esteem, perfectionism, and feelings of inadequacy or insecurity. Bulimia nervosa may also be triggered by stressful life events, such as divorce, job loss, or the death of a loved one. Environmental factors that may contribute to bulimia nervosa include exposure to media images that promote unrealistic body ideals, pressure to be thin from friends or family members, or a history of dieting. --- #### Treatment for bulimia nervosa For someone with an eating disorder, mealtimes can be a battle. Willpower is pitted against hunger, cravings, and sometimes even panic. It's no wonder that people with eating disorders often feel isolated and alone. Fortunately, there are many different types of support available for those struggling with an eating disorder. The treatment for bulimia nervosa typically involves a combination of psychotherapy, medication, and nutritional counselling. Psychotherapy can help people with bulimia nervosa learn how to cope with their disorder (it includes cognitive behavioural therapy and family-based therapy) and medications, such as antidepressants, can also be used to treat bulimia nervosa. 1. Cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT): CBT is a type of psychotherapy that has been shown to be effective in treating bulimia nervosa. CBT can help individuals with bulimia nervosa to develop healthier coping mechanisms and thought patterns. CBT helps people change their negative thinking patterns. This can be helpful for people with eating disorders who tend to have a lot of negative thoughts about themselves and their bodies. 2. Family-based treatment (FBT): FBT is a type of therapy that involves the whole family. It can help families learn how to support their loved one with an eating disorder in a healthy way. 3. Nutritional counselling: Nutritional counselling can be helpful for people with all types of eating disorders including individuals with bulimia nervosa. A registered dietitian can help one develop a healthy relationship with food and one's body. A registered dietitian can work with one to develop a healthy eating plan that meets your individual needs. Nutritional counselling can help one to learn how to make healthy food choices and cope with difficult emotions in a healthy way. 4. Medications: Medication can also be used to treat bulimia nervosa. Selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs) are a type of antidepressant that is often prescribed for individuals with bulimia nervosa. SSRIs can help to reduce the frequency and severity of bingeing and purging episodes. --- In severe cases of Bulimia, inpatient treatment might be required. Inpatient treatment is when someone stays in a hospital or other facility to receive care for their eating disorder. This type of treatment can be very intensive and is usually reserved for people with severe cases of anorexia or bulimia. --- #### Conclusion Bulimia nervosa is a very serious eating disorder that can have devastating consequences on a person's health. If you or someone you know is suffering from bulimia, please seek professional help as soon as possible. With treatment, people with bulimia can recover and lead healthy, happy lives. --- # 𝙍𝙚𝙛𝙚𝙧𝙚𝙣𝙘𝙚𝙨 - "A systematic review of evidence for psychological treatments in eating disorders: 2005-2012". | title | [ESP/ENG] Visita al mayor parque acuático de África Occidental: me convertí en niño por un día - Parte 1 ||| Visiting the Largest Water Park In West Africa: I Became a Child for a Day - Part 1 |
<img src="https://files.peakd.com/file/peakd-hive/gamsam/GlaQEDyu-hr.png" alt="hr.png"> A couple of weeks ago, I decided to become a child again for just a day. I took a trip to Park Vega Waterpark in Agbor Local Government Area of Delta State with a couple of friends to escape the daily stress of the nine-to-five. We just needed a place to unwind and relieve the tension that has accumulated around us at work. The water park is said to be the largest in West Africa and is one of the popular tourist destinations in Delta State. It is a privately owned waterpark and the only international standard waterpark endorsed by the International Association of Amusement Parks and Attractions (IAAPA) and the World Waterparks Association (WWA). The really fun thing about the park is that there are a lot of different attractions, slides and pools. --- We went there on a Saturday as that was the only free time we had together. We left at about 9:30 am in the morning as the opening hours are 10 am - 6 pm and the park was about 45 minutes away as we were just in a neighbouring town. The journey there eventually took about one hour and we arrived at 10:30 am. Transportation for one person cost about 3,000 naira (approximately $4.5). Entry tickets into the park cost 10,000 naira per person (approximately $15). After getting our tickets and heading in, we were provided with lockers to put in our personal belongings, each with a unique combination code. We hit the showers immediately and changed into our swim trunks in the changing rooms. But of course, before that, we took some pictures for the gram. <img src="https://files.peakd.com/file/peakd-hive/gamsam/GlaQEDyu-hr.png" alt="hr.png"> After showering and getting changed into our swimming trunks, the first place we hit was the slides. There were a lot of slides we were actually confused about which one to ride first. --- We decided to go with the Aquatower first as it looked quite interesting and wasn't so high. A lot of them were scared of heights, but I wasn't. So, I had to be the brave one in the group ;). The Aquatower is basically a fun city for children which brings me to my point. It is fitted with 4 gently sloping waterslides, a tipping bucket, bubbler jets, umbrella jets, water guns, water wheels, pipe falls, a net bridge, a net climber etc. There's a lot to do here if you're looking to become a child again. <center> Enjoying the AquaTower </center> --- <center> This was me inside the Aquatower </center> <div class="pull-right"> </div> <div class="pull-left"> </div> --- A continuación, fuimos al tobogán Space Hole. <img src="https://files.peakd.com/file/peakd-hive/gamsam/GlaQEDyu-hr.png" alt="hr.png"> Next, we went to the Space Hole Slide. This waterslide is one of my favourites. It is actually not meant to be used by children and had a minimum height requirement of 120cm as it might be dangerous. And trust me, it was pretty scary. You had to slide down a series of twists and turns before being thrown into a jumbo bowl and then lunged into a pool. This slide is so much fun and it sure got the adrenaline flowing. --- <center> The Space Hole Water Slide behind us - very large!!! </center> --- By this time, we were all already very hungry. We went to the restaurant to order some food - basically chicken and chips, shawarma and fruit juice. --- <center> After devouring our meals </center> --- After eating, I definitely had to rest a little so I just lounged for a little while by the poolside. --- <div class="pull-left"> </div> <div class="pull-right"> </div> <center> Lounging by the pool side </center> --- After resting for a while, it was already past noon and the sun was up and shining fully. It was time for the real thrill. We went to try out the next set of slides. There were 3 slides built into one very high platform but each of the slides was completely different and each gave a unique kind of thrill. <center> Me atop the platform for the freefall slide You can see a whole section of the water park from this point </center> --- <div class="pull-left"> Going down the Freefall Slide </div> El primer tobogán que probé fue el tobogán Freefall. <img src="https://files.peakd.com/file/peakd-hive/gamsam/GlaQEDyu-hr.png" alt="hr.png"> The first slide I tried out was the Freefall Slide. The Freefall slide gives riders a momentary feeling of weightlessness. It is a perfect recipe for those who appreciate adrenaline. I went down this slide multiple times. There's just something absolutely thrilling about coming down on a free fall and not feeling the weight of your body anymore. The stop is also so abrupt as your body hits the water below that feels like coming to a quick halt in a speeding car as the water splashes all over. <hr> I took multiple turns alternating it with the Blackhole Wave Combo Slide. This slide was remarkably fun to experience. It had a steep drop that takes riders up a nearly vertical wall for a moment of weightlessness before they are swish-swashed down to the shutdown lane. You are also supposed to ride this on an air-filled raft and the minimum height requirement is also 120cm. There was also the Multisurf Slide but this was pretty much basic and I didn't enjoy it that much. Jaja. <img src="https://files.peakd.com/file/peakd-hive/gamsam/GlaQEDyu-hr.png" alt="hr.png"> Next up, we hit the pools. The park had different kinds of pools including a large wave pool with actual waves. That's too long to put into this post however and the plenty of pictures will get cluttered. So, watch out for the second part of this post. Haha. --- </div> <center> Written by @gamsam All images used are taken by me and copyright free </center> <img src="https://files.peakd.com/file/peakd-hive/gamsam/GlaQEDyu-hr.png" alt="hr.png"> |

This slide is so much fun and it sure got the adrenaline flowing.\n\n---\n\n<center>\n\nThe Space Hole Water Slide behind us - very large!!!\n</center>\n\n\n---\n\nBy this time, we were all already very hungry. We went to the restaurant to order some food - basically chicken and chips, shawarma and fruit juice.\n\n---\n\n<center>\n\nAfter devouring our meals\n</center>\n\n---\n\nAfter eating, I definitely had to rest a little so I just lounged for a little while by the poolside. \n\n---\n\n<div class=\"pull-left\">\n\n\n</div>\n\n<div class=\"pull-right\">\n\n\n</div>\n\n<center>\n\nLounging by the pool side\n</center>\n\n---\n\nAfter resting for a while, it was already past noon and the sun was up and shining fully. It was time for the real thrill. We went to try out the next set of slides. There were 3 slides built into one very high platform but each of the slides was completely different and each gave a unique kind of thrill. \n\n<center>\n\nMe atop the platform for the freefall slide\n\nYou can see a whole section of the water park from this point\n</center>\n\n---\n\n<div class=\"pull-left\">\n\n\nGoing down the Freefall Slide\n</div>\n\nEl primer tobogán que probé fue el tobogán Freefall. I tried out was the Freefall Slide. The Freefall slide gives riders a momentary feeling of weightlessness. It is a perfect recipe for those who appreciate adrenaline. I went down this slide multiple times. There's just something absolutely thrilling about coming down on a free fall and not feeling the weight of your body anymore. \n\nThe stop is also so abrupt as your body hits the water below that feels like coming to a quick halt in a speeding car as the water splashes all over. \n\n<hr>\n\nI took multiple turns alternating it with the Blackhole Wave Combo Slide. This slide was remarkably fun to experience. It had a steep drop that takes riders up a nearly vertical wall for a moment of weightlessness before they are swish-swashed down to the shutdown lane. You are also supposed to ride this on an air-filled raft and the minimum height requirement is also 120cm.\n\nThere was also the Multisurf Slide but this was pretty much basic and I didn't enjoy it that much.\n\n<center>\n\nGoing down the MultiSurf Slide\n</center>\n\n---\n\nLo siguiente que hicimos fue ir a las piscinas. Jaja.\n\n<img src=\"https://files.peakd.com/file/peakd-hive/gamsam/GlaQEDyu-hr.png\" alt=\"hr.png\">\n\nNext up, we hit the pools. The park had different kinds of pools including a large wave pool with actual waves. That's too long to put into this post however and the plenty of pictures will get cluttered. So, watch out for the second part of this post. Haha.\n\n---\n\n</div>\n\n<center>\n\n \n Written by @gamsam\nAll images used are taken by me and copyright free\n</center>\n\n<img src=\"https://files.peakd.com/file/peakd-hive/gamsam/GlaQEDyu-hr.png\" alt=\"hr.png\">",

| title | Asteroids: Minor Planets or Large Rocky Monsters? |
| body | <div class="text-justify"> By NASA/JPL/JHUAPL. Public Domain, [Link](https://commons.wikimedia.org/w/index.php?curid=45999926) --- <p>In my last post, I wrote about the planets in our solar system. Well, planets are not the only large bodies scattered about our solar systems. Some asteroids are so large they have been classified as planets before. If you want to learn more about asteroids, you've come to the right place. Here, you'll learn about their size, origin, and characteristics. You'll also learn why they're interesting and important. Then, you can use that knowledge to discover more about the universe! And if you're interested in astronomy, you'll learn about their various classifications.</p> --- <h2>About asteroids</h2> <p>Asteroids are irregularly shaped objects that orbit the sun. Some are as large as half a mile across, while others are quite small. They have no atmosphere, and their surfaces have a temperature of about -70 degrees Celsius. They are rich in metals, carbon, and silica. A few of them also have water trapped in their rubble mass. Astronomers believe that these objects may have been created by collisions with Earth. If that is true, then life on Earth began as a result of carbon deposits on asteroids.</p> <p>Many asteroids have moons or smaller companions. 16% of Near-Earth Asteroid Scouts (NEAs) larger than 200 meters in diameter have a companion small enough to survive an impact. Although this isn't the case right now, it doesn't mean that we can't imagine such a scenario.</p> <p>After the first object was discovered in the solar system, astronomers began to study asteroids. Astronomers began observing astronomical objects, and more asteroids were discovered over the next few decades. Astronomers began to give these objects names and permanent designations. Some were named after mythological characters, such as Ceres, which is a star-like object, or Pallas, which is a small asteroid that is less than six meters in diameter.</p> <p>The main belt of asteroids is home to most asteroids. These objects are made primarily of rock and metals, though some are composed of carbon and water. Several are referred to as planetoids, and the dwarf planet Ceres also lives in this belt. Asteroids in this belt are separated by approximately six hundred thousand miles. This distance is sufficient for spacecraft to explore these objects safely.</p> --- <h2>Size</h2> <p>There are four large asteroids in our solar system. These are Ceres, Vesta, Pallas, and Hygiea. These are so large that when they were discovered, they were thought to be planets and not asteroids. They are currently still considered by many schools of thought to be protoplanets (a hypothetical whirling gaseous mass within a giant cloud of gas and dust that rotates around a sun and is believed to give rise to a planet). Vesta (left), with Ceres (centre) and the Moon (right) shown to scale. Moon image: Gregory H. Revera. Ceres image: Justin Cowart. Vesta image: NASA/JPL-Caltech/UCAL/MPS/DLR/IDA - Public Domain, [Link](https://commons.wikimedia.org/w/index.php?curid=71759032) --- Ceres is the largest, at just under 1000 km in diameter. Its spectral properties suggest that it is carbonaceous, and its surface is composed of hydrous silicates. However, it is not known whether it has an atmosphere or not.</p> <p>The central asteroid belt is formed between the orbits of Jupiter and Mars. Thousands of other asteroids have similar sizes and shapes. These are categorized according to their chemical composition and their relative distances from the Sun.</p> <p>There are over 10,000 known asteroids. Many of these are too small to be observed from Earth. Some are so small that they leave blurs on photographic plates. But, they are just as diverse as the planets. Astronomers believe that some asteroids may approach Earth in the next century. A large asteroid would release the equivalent energy of a 20,000-megaton bomb. It would also leave a 13 km crater. In addition, it would throw enough debris into the atmosphere to trigger nuclear winter.</p> <p>Most asteroids are smaller than 20 kilometres, but there are large ones. Ceres, for instance, are almost 1000 km in diameter, while Vesta and Pallas are slightly larger. About 3000 asteroids are larger than 20 km in diameter. This size distribution is thought to be caused by collisional fragmentation within the asteroid belt. Because of this, meteorites that impact Earth often contain traces of collisional fragmentation.</p> Cumulative discoveries of just the near-Earth asteroids known by size, 1980–2022 By Alan B. Chamberlin - Jet Propulsion Laboratory, NASA. Public Domain, [Link](https://commons.wikimedia.org/w/index.php?curid=24306117) --- <h2>Origin</h2> <p>Recent research shows that most asteroids and meteorites have a common origin. In a study published in the July 2018 issue of Nature Astronomy, Dermott and his team found that the majority of asteroids and meteorites derive from ancient minor planets. They also found that at least 15 per cent of asteroids in the inner asteroid belt may trace their origins back to the same group of primordial bodies.</p> <p>The study found that the spectral signatures of asteroids reflect a cold origin. This suggests that asteroids formed much farther out from the Sun than they are today. It also suggests that the materials that formed Earth may have originated far out in space and then been brought in during the early solar system's turbulent history. The study also noted that data from NASA's Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array (ALMA) telescope have revealed ringed structures in protoplanetary disks. These results are considered to be the first direct observations of planetesimal formation.</p> <p>The formation of asteroids is not completely understood. Several theories have been proposed to explain how asteroids were formed. One of these theories is that asteroids were formed from a group of particles that swarmed together in the early solar system. The proto-Jupiter and other bodies in the Jupiter zone acted as aerobraking agents for these planetesimals. This turbulent gas prevented the particles from settling down and condensed. As a result, the particles were stuck together and grew in size. This process would also add fuel to the developing asteroid.</p> --- <h2>Characteristics</h2> <p>Physical characterization of asteroids is a critical part of research in the space sector. Asteroids' characteristics are important for several applications, including Planetary Defence, Resources Prospecting, and Solar System formation modelling. However, most asteroids are poorly understood and there is still a lack of detailed data. This makes it difficult to use a direct experimental approach. To achieve accurate results, a variety of mathematical and physics-based approaches have been employed. For example, in this study, the researchers analysed the various factors that affect the trajectory of an asteroid, including its composition, surface temperature, slope angle, and planetary radiation pressure. They also looked at the influence of the Earth's proximity to asteroids on their trajectory.</p> <p>Most asteroids are rocky bodies, and they vary in size. Some are almost a thousand kilometres across, while others are only a few meters across. The largest asteroids have partially differentiated interiors, like those of planets. However, the vast majority are much smaller. They are believed to be fragments of larger bodies and may have undergone collisions.</p> <p>The large asteroids in the P and T classes have a long rotation period, while the smaller ones have shorter rotation periods. In addition, large asteroids tend to retain all of the debris from collisions, whereas the smaller ones only retain a small amount. This causes them to lose angular momentum and slow down their rotation rate.</p> 42 of the largest objects in the asteroid belt captured by ESO's Very Large Telescope By ESO/M. Kornmesser/Vernazza et al, CC BY 4.0, [Link](https://commons.wikimedia.org/w/index.php?curid=117554246) --- <h2>Rings</h2> <p>Astronomers have discovered rings on asteroids in the solar system, but their origin remains a mystery. Some believe they may have been formed from debris that was thrown off the asteroid Chariklo. Another theory is that the rings were formed when another celestial body collided with the asteroid's moon, breaking it apart.</p> <p>The formation of rings is a complex process, and it is not known what caused them to form. A similar process is thought to have created the moon and other planetary satellites. But whatever the case, the process of creating rings on asteroids is a mystery that must be solved. There are a variety of possible explanations for the formation of asteroids, but in general, ring formation is related to an object's mass.</p> <p>Asteroids can contain a wide variety of debris, but the most likely explanation is a low-speed collision between an asteroid and a small body. The collision could have resulted in a ring system that evolved over millions of years. The shepherding moon may limit future observations, but further analysis will help us understand how the ring system formed and why other small objects might also have them.</p> <p>Researchers who studied asteroid occultation observed that the star behind Chariklo shifted in its orbit. They also noticed that the star was darkened in the sky before and after the asteroid passed. They published this information in 2014, and the asteroid was renamed Chariklo.</p> --- <h2>Explosive Meteors (Bolides)</h2> <p>We are often in the firing line of asteroids and comets, but sometimes our planet is the target. One such event occurred on December 18, 2013, as a giant explosion erupted above the Bering Sea. The explosive growth of asteroids can result from a variety of factors. These explosive meteors are referred to as Bolides. A bolide usually means an exceptionally bright meteor, but the term is subject to more than one definition, according to context. It may refer to any large crater-forming body, or to one that explodes in the earth's atmosphere.</p> Frequency of bolides, small asteroids roughly 1 to 20 meters in diameter impacting Earth's atmosphere By NASA/Planetary Science. Public Domain, [Link](https://commons.wikimedia.org/w/index.php?curid=36772457) --- <p>Asteroids are fun to learn about, space is in general. And even though scientists speculate that a two-kilometre asteroid is unlikely to impact the Earth within the next millennium, even smaller asteroids could still destroy or injure humans. In addition, if an asteroid does strike the Earth in the next million years, it could cause a nuclear winter event.</p> </div> <center> Written by @gamsam All images used are copyright free </center> <img src="https://files.peakd.com/file/peakd-hive/gamsam/GlaQEDyu-hr.png" alt="hr.png"> |
