"parent_author":"",
"parent_permlink":"travel",
"author":"azircon",
"permlink":"monument-valley-mitten-buttes",
"title":"Monument Valley: Mitten Buttes",
"body":"I am in [Monument Valley (https:\/\/www.google.com\/maps\/@36.9943194,
-110.1213023,
14z) today,
which is in northernmost Arizona and southernmost Utah,
straddling the state border. Views of Monument Valley defines the quintessential American West. It is this broad open flat,
punctuated by strangely shaped orange colored buttes and rock spires,
that rises from the flat valley floor 700 ft to 850 ft in height. It is a deeply spiritual place for the Navajo people who still lives in the valley,
and it is part of the Monument Valley Navajo Tribal Park. The valley is featured in numerous movies (especially John Wayne westerns) and regularly featured in famous photographs of the American West,
by many professional photographers. Here is my take on a sunset panorama:\n\n[![ (https:\/\/steemitimages.com\/DQmQboXjhRMMGDYW1Nf41y6icVDhm1U4i8sfDgBmEA89Jtf\/Monument_Valley_Sunset.jpg) (https:\/\/steemitimages.com\/DQmQboXjhRMMGDYW1Nf41y6icVDhm1U4i8sfDgBmEA89Jtf\/Monument_Valley_Sunset.jpg)\n\nIn the picture are West and East Mitten Buttes (they look like mittens) also the Merrick Butte to the right. In March and September,
shadow of one of the buttes falls on the Merrick during,
which is featured here. I have kept people in the shot on purpose to the right just to show the crowd gather there almost everyday to catch sunset. The people sort of gives a sense of scale to this place. The dirt road in the foreground is well graded and can be easily drive on a 2WD car. There is a $20 entrance fee to the park that goes towards supporting Navajo Nation.\n\n_Disclaimer: All photographs are my own.
