Tri-cities Cancer Rates Say No",
"body":"I'm considering a move to the Tri-Cities area in Washington State,
which is near the [most polluted nuclear site in the western hemisphere (https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Hanford_Site). This is where the US Government made and purified the plutonium they needed during the [Manhattan project (https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Manhattan_Project) to build the nuclear bombs that eventually detonated over Japan. \n\nIts located in south-central Washington:\n\n![hanford.png (https:\/\/steemitimages.com\/DQmZXx6pajvwKT5JXanGj4nBBQkGh8RTpEQDhv7kQpkYogs\/hanford.png)\n\nI've been completely unable to convince my girlfriend that this area is SAFE,
despite the lack of evidence for any serious problems due to the nearby nuclear waste. Sure,
the waste has escaped into the ground,
and some of it gets into the water,
but that doesn't get into the food chain or water supply due to the shear volume of water that flows through the river. \n\nI did visit and found the area pleasant albeit very quiet. The area is growing very quickly,
and it has been called one of the best places to raise a family. Still,
there are many people concerned with the presence of nuclear waste nearby. The easy argument against this,
as someone living in the San Francisco bay area,
is whether the pollution and impending \n'big-one' earthquake along the San Andreas fault are worse than some underground radioactivity. \n\nI've struggled to find any concrete numbers that support either side of the issue. Until today. \n\nI found a table of cancer incidence by county from the state of [Washington's website (https:\/\/www.doh.wa.gov\/DataandStatisticalReports\/DiseasesandChronicConditions\/CancerData). Here is a table of the cancer incidence rates sorted by the # of people per 100,
000 diagnosed. I've highlighted the three counties adjacent to the Hanford site in yellow:\n\n![ (https:\/\/steemitimages.com\/DQmZQ3hWzPAgfJwpTs9v9Ghk5LA14xeAhzXiwo7dvKSUvLj\/image.png)\n\nThe counties near the Hanford site are all literally in the bottom half of cancer incidence rate among all counties in the state. In fact,
Franklin and Benton counties,
which are closest to the site,
are in the lower 1\/3.",
"json_metadata":" \"tags\":[\"life\",
\"travel\",
\"steemit\",
\"blog\",
\"health\" ,
\"image\":[\"https:\/\/steemitimages.com\/DQmZXx6pajvwKT5JXanGj4nBBQkGh8RTpEQDhv7kQpkYogs\/hanford.png\",
\"https:\/\/steemitimages.com\/DQmZQ3hWzPAgfJwpTs9v9Ghk5LA14xeAhzXiwo7dvKSUvLj\/image.png\" ,
\"links\":[\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Hanford_Site\",
\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Manhattan_Project\",
\"https:\/\/www.doh.wa.gov\/DataandStatisticalReports\/DiseasesandChronicConditions\/CancerData\" ,
\"app\":\"steemit\/0.1\",
\"format\":\"markdown\" " | vote | "voter":"drjessemeyer", "author":"drjessemeyer", "permlink":"hanford-site-radiation-tri-cities-cancer-rates-say-no", "weight":10000 |
