Something doesn't seem to land with you,
whether it's the cinematography,
narrative,
characters,
or simply the budget (or lack of).\n\nOne Cut of the Dead is one of those films,
or so it has you feel it is such for around 37 full minutes. It launches itself right into a style that seems blatantly low-budget and rushed,
cheap and weak. A 'found footage' zombie film made by ambitious film students with little experience. Though,
the beauty in this film is that this is purely intentional.\n\nThis is a film that,
for 37 or so minutes,
provides you with a story shot entirely in one long take,
in which filmmakers in Japan are making a zombie film in abandoned areas in the countryside,
just at the same time as a genuine zombie outbreak begins. A comical director appears throughout with a strange enjoyment about the fact that he's getting some great material from this genuine outbreak and seemingly dumb cast and crew attempt to survive but are quickly killed off with no real cares for their status within the film.\n\nWhile the fact that this 37 minute short is filmed entirely in one long take is quite impressive,
the film doesn't establish any context as to why it has this low,
slow and strange quality to it. It presents itself in this serious manner that has you questioning whether you should continue or not,
and certainly rewards those who decide to do so in the end.\n\nOne Cut of the Dead is a film that pays homage to the world of filmmaking itself. It presents a creation to you that seems serious and presents the context much later,
in the latter part of the film's runtime. We are introduced to the characters properly and learn of their ambitions and dedication to creating films -- and the fact that this concept is a result of a studio commissioning a live broadcast of a zombie film that is shot entirely in one take.\n\nThis narrative adds an additional layer to the strange events that we saw prior. Context is eventually given and provided in ways that grant a few laughs once you realise the reasons behind certain weird actions,
say from the director suddenly appearing in a frantic manner and shouting \"ACTION!\" as a character 'runs' from a zombie. We see different perspectives that we never saw before that show how many different people are running around behind the location and camera to ensure things run relatively smoothly,
even when things go horribly wrong and improvisation kicks in.\n\nWe're introduced to this dedicated director and father that reconciles with his filmmaker daughter during the production via their mutual passion for the creativity and fun that goes into making films. It's nothing huge within the narrative,
but essentially a small piece of character development that warms the heart and once again shows us the powerful connections filmmaking brings. This becomes even more evident once we are introduced to actual clips of the one cut take towards the end,
and that the whole point of the film was really to just have some fun and make something creative. The story is just to pad things out a bit and give it an excuse to exist.\n\nThat said,
it isn't a bad thing. It's refreshing to see positive and not-so-serious takes on the world of filmmaking. And it's certainly inspiring to see how people come together to create and take on new challenges that seemingly pop up around every corner.\n",
"json_metadata":" \"app\":\"steempeak\/2.2.2\",
\"format\":\"markdown\",
\"tags\":[\"film\",
\"movies\",
\"creativecoin\",
\"palnet\",
\"filmmaking\",
\"art\",
\"writing\",
\"blog\" ,
\"image\":[\"https:\/\/files.steempeak.com\/file\/steempeak\/namiks\/V6ckb0pK-One20Cut20of20the20Dead.jpg\" " |
