I was very glad that I was part for this once in a lifetime event. Featuring the artistic concepts that was inspired by our very own culture and history here in Mindanao. The exhibit was held at SM Ecoland @ Davao City on the month of september. Different artist showcased such marvelous artworks majorly painting. It was a challenge for me since we have to exhibit such huge paintings 8x4ft size to be exact.

Southern sensibilities gathers together some of the most talented artist of and from the region,
who are not afraid to re-imagine and visualize aspects of their customs,
folklores,
and beliefs as we consider as our identity and place in the world.

# Here are the artists

# Joffry Casan
 Identity
Rubbercut print
91x229cm
https://img.esteem.ws/eff8thcykq.jpg
Casan works primarily in the medium of printmaking because "the aesthetics of printing catches my creative attention" he said. For him,
art connects the viewer and the subject matter of the work through narrative. "It is a world",
he says,
"where the depicted subjects have stories to tell more than what the naked eye can see,
stories that are understood and appreciated at a closer look and at a deeper analysis".

# Charles Ligan
The Pictorial History of Sama People
Oil on Canvas
122x224cm (Triptych)
https://img.esteem.ws/2z9nsdfscd.jpg
Ligan presents a triptych with each panel having its own story but joined together by a continuous landscape. The first panel shows the Dinagat seizing woman from tha mansaka and mandaya indigenous groups; the second reveals the killing of the giants through their source of water; the third offers us a view of Sama members doing their welcome dance. Ligan said "The inspiration for this piece is to give the younger generation of the island an information about the group's history".

# Alynnah Macla
 Picturing Relations: A Family Background
Oil paint and graphite on salvaged wood planks
101x179x5cm
https://img.esteem.ws/hfnlki8rfh.jpg
The artistoffers an unconventional support for her work. Instead of canvas,
Macla used salvaged wood planks,
adding texture and history to what could have been just a simple family poetrait. The members of the family have their backs turned on the viewer,
exerting their anomality,
but not their religious identity,
as the women wear hijab. The artist said "I always make use of hijab as a metaphor for the source of power and protection. I want to uphold my identity as a Muslim in a way that people,
rather than finding me oppressed,
appreciate my willingness to conform to my belief and be able to translate that in my art."

# Kent Medenilla (Me 😁 @kennik)
 Moira
Oil on canvas
122x244cm
https://img.esteem.ws/tz4yjo0sx2.jpg
My work is an inquiry into the indigenous people who participate in the Kadayawan Festival. They are represented by two portraits of the same girl lying opposite beside each other: surrounded by red halo,
one has hair down,
with a quiet demeanor; other,
her hair strewn with colorful feathers,
smiles at the viewer. The festivity can be viewed as either something solemn or festive depending on what version of the girl you want to see. The work shows an elaborate transition of how,
what,
and when changes happen in the festival that has become a tourist magnet. Inevitably,
changes will have to happen. The question or concern here is how change is being managed and manipulated is celebrating the festival of Davao.

# Jester Oani
 Kuaman's Resurrection
Acrylic on canvas
122x244cm
https://img.esteem.ws/nio3qk95mp.jpg
The artist shows an epic hero charging from an open sky,
his long,
wild hair streaming in the wind. Seeming to strike with lightning that issues forth from him hands and feet the people on the ground,
he is god-like in proportions and unmistakble for his awesome force. Sitting on a flying hut is a rooster with a rich plumage. "My deep interest and concern about these issues made me realize that my study needs to push through,
continue,
or perpetuate the meaning,
values and tradition of our indigenous people presented in the epic",
says the artist.

# Boylin Poral
The Heroic Resistance of Datu Bago
Oil on canvas
122x244cm
https://img.esteem.ws/13bvye8u9y.jpg
The painter pays homage to "one of the classic figures that contributed to Davao City's history." Together with his men,
Datu Bago is shown commanding a ship,
presumably to fight against invaders. The good weather,
the calm sea,
and the billowing sail belie the confrontation that is about to take place. "A documentation of a historic epic lost in the endless sea of colonial influence uncovers the significance of Datu Bago and bring it to light; the simple exposure of his story to public view can create positive change in the way the Filipino can perceive their own cultural heritage",
Poral said.

# Soon Unlang
 The children of Limokon
Oil on canvas
154x244cm
https://img.esteem.ws/ga09mt8nyg.jpg
His work showcases a woman in her unclothed glory,
her sinuous silhouette seeming to repeat the swirl of clouds above her. Her eyes still closed,
she has just seemingly emerged from an egg,
whose shell is shown bromen behind her. Flush on the right side is another being coming out of a shell. Unlang said that the painting is a contribution "towards the Mandaya community,
that they will be able to know their story".

# Judelyn Villarta
 Bukidnon's Cultural Gathering
Mixed media on canvas
183x183cm
https://img.esteem.ws/qejv7aywqr.jpg
The artist depicts the seven ethno-linguistic groups that participate in the Kaamulan Festival. Gathered and organized on and around a mandala-like composition,
they are shown playing their musical instruments or enacting the movements of their own dances. The artist wants to emphasize the authenticity and cultural importance of the kaamulan festival "where the indigenous people themselves are the ones who perform during the event".

# Ang Kiukok
(1931-2005)

national artist

 Woman
Tempera on paper
50x35cm
https://img.esteem.ws/5bpi6z2y6j.jpg
was a Filipino painter of Chinese descent and was a National Artist for Visual Arts.

And there goes the artists! 😊

I myself never thought i would be part of this event and it surprises me a lot that a art curator would love to see my work being hanged for exhibition purposes.
