This is even more prevalent to kids,
where completely benign things might trigger fear in a child for one reason or another.

When I was little there were a few moments from video games that honestly scared the crap out of me,
though they weren’t necessarily ‘scary’. Let’s take a look at my shame:

# #5 The duck,
I mean dragon from *Adventure*
***
![ (https://steemitimages.com/DQmbGhG3Re6j3LsZPENtoojnagopPS842kCKP5jofqCyo9C/image.png)

Like many Gen-X gamers,
many of us cut our teeth on *Adventure* long before we ever experienced *The Legend of Zelda*. I spent a lot of time wandering around those blocky stages and thankfully my imagination was vivid enough to see that square I was moving around the screen as an actual character exploring a magical kingdom.

The game was pretty calming,
that is,
until the dragon appeared on the screen. I have issues with something chasing me,
so the dragons from *Adventure* always freaked me out when I came across one. If I didn’t have the sword,
I ran like a baby even though I knew that if I couldn’t find the chalice or the sword,
I was gonna get cornered and eaten by the beast.

# #4 Death from *Gauntlet*
***
![ (https://steemitimages.com/DQmeyeHdZRxA9x5XbUoukhyd3r1hrRHhsjH5PhecwyjeH9o/image.png)
Image Source: [The Joy of Sticks (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Wl8nxPBJXKM) on YouTube

Again,
being chased by something scared me as a kid. The arcade game *Gauntlet* was a fantasy adventure where you explore dungeons and destroy countless ghosts,
demons and other inhabitants of the mazes. One in particular though always freaked me out.

Occasionally you would release or encounter Death as you cut a path through these dungeons. You could kill it if you had a screen-clearing magic potion,
but if not you had no way to kill it. You could run,
but it would catch you and suck the life out of you. Again,
being chased by something (especially something I can’t kill) freaked me out when I was a kid.

# #3 Dirk dying in *Dragon’s Lair*
***
![ (https://steemitimages.com/DQmV1E8xTykA5aRkeAT2tkHN2ogcdgZve65Z4RmZ1LE1e6s/image.png)
Image Source: [blackmagicstudios (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2VRGKM-UBvU) on YouTube

*Dragon’s Lair* is an iconic arcade game. In a time when crudely pixelated 2D graphics dominated the arcades,
*Dragon’s Lair* seemed to be a game from far in the future by using actual animation you could control at various points in the action by pressing one of four directions or the action button to give Dirk the correct input required to advance.

Give the wrong input or don’t enter it in time results in a death animation where Dirk turned into a pile of bones. I’m not sure why this got to me,
but I avoided the *Dragon’s Lair* machines whenever I saw them because seeing him shrivel up from a hero into a skeleton tapped into something and just scared me. It even gave me nightmares.

# #2 *Shadowgate* - all of it
***
![ (https://steemitimages.com/DQmfUH4ksgwsNoLMvDSD3HLTYQ6xst73hYisuvmqPevNUhm/image.png)

I was quite a bit older when *Shadowgate* hit the NES console. I was closer to a preteen than a child when I played through it. But the game was eerie from start to finish,
with creepy music,
unsettling environments and creatures that loomed in your path to kill you if you make the wrong move.

Even though the game scared me,
I loved it. Figuring out the puzzles,
what to do with items and how to defeat the monsters in the castle was addictive and fun.

# #1 The Wizard from *Wizard of Wor*
***
![ (https://steemitimages.com/DQmUTzTxXajz6szovF2nMkybYszJtjHHJ81gq7QLvpovSQv/image.png)
Image Source: [the history of computing project (https://www.thocp.net/software/games/golden_age.htm)

I only ever remember seeing this game at the department store my mom took me to where we bought all of our clothes. The store had a small arcade and snack area that had games like *Missile Command* and *Battlezone*. It also had a *Wizard of Wor* machine that really scared the crap out of me.

The game is an early 80’s maze game not unlike many others that were popular at the time,
but what made *Wizard of Wor* stand out was the digitized voices. The cabinet frequently erupted with taunts from the wizard that came across as both robotic and evil,
which have stayed with me to this day. As an adult,
I love the early digitized speech from this game,
but I can also see why it terrified 6-year-old me. The creepy voice combined with the dark,
rhythmic background music made this game genuinely unsettling for me as a kid.

Thank God I never came across a *Sinistar* machine as a child.

Video Source: soldierofwor on YouTube

Seriously,
just listen to this thing.

### What do you think?
