They were formed in 1976 in Manchester,<br> England by singer Ian Curtis,<br> guitarist\/keyboardist Bernard Sumner,<br> drummer Stephen Morris,<br> and bassist Peter Hook. They began around the same time as many punk bands,<br> but are often considered a seminal \"post-punk\" act,<br> incorporating darker,<br> more introspective themes and more unique harmonic and melodic ideas than their contemporaries.\n\n\n\n###### <center>[Listen to *Disorder* by **Joy Division** here. Everything about it stands out from other UK acts of the time: the guitar uses a lot of arpeggiated lines,<br> instead of just a typical power-chord-punk progression,<br> the bass provides what essentially would normally be a rhythm guitar's harmony parts,<br> and the lyrics are much more poetic and dark.
