When her eyes found him,<br> she was surprised to notice a dark-skinned,<br> older gentleman sitting,<br> half-asleep in a chair near her window. His hair was graying,<br> but he was once quite attractive,<br> she could tell. He wore dark utility attire and something around his neck holding his tribal cloak in place. Living on Irola her whole life,<br> she had seen A'mara before,<br> of course. But why one was in this room with her,<br> she had no idea. <\/font><\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-bottom: 0in; line-height: 100%\"><font face=\"Andalus,<br> serif\">Perhaps alerted to her change in status by changes in the monitor bleeps,<br> he stirred and opened his eyes. \u201cWelcome back,<br> Iyva,<br>\u201d he greeted with a kind voice.<\/font><\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-bottom: 0in; line-height: 100%\">\u201c<font face=\"Andalus,<br> serif\">Who are you? How did you know my name? Why am I here?\u201d she asked.<\/font><\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-bottom: 0in; line-height: 100%\">\u201c<font face=\"Andalus,<br> serif\">Do you not remember your accident?\u201d he asked gently.<\/font><\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-bottom: 0in; line-height: 100%\"><font face=\"Andalus,<br> serif\">Iyva thought for a moment. \u201cI fell down some stairs...\u201d<\/font><\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-bottom: 0in; line-height: 100%\">\u201c<font face=\"Andalus,<br> serif\">Pushed,<br> more like,<br>\u201d the man replied emphatically. \u201cIt was reported as an attempted murder. It nearly worked too.\u201d<\/font><\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-bottom: 0in; line-height: 100%\">\u201c<font face=\"Andalus,<br> serif\">No one pushed me! It was more like...,<br>\u201d she faded away. She did not understand what had happened either. It had always worked before. Could she trust the man sitting in the chair?<\/font><\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-bottom: 0in; line-height: 100%\">\u201c<font face=\"Andalus,<br> serif\">What happened to me?\u201d she asked.<\/font><\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-bottom: 0in; line-height: 100%\">\u201c<font face=\"Andalus,<br> serif\">You fell down the stairs,<br> apparently,<br>\u201d came the echoed reply.<\/font><\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-bottom: 0in; line-height: 100%\">\u201c<font face=\"Andalus,<br> serif\">Beyond that,<br>\u201d she said impatiently.<\/font><\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-bottom: 0in; line-height: 100%\">\u201c<font face=\"Andalus,<br> serif\">You fell through the glass at the bottom of the steps sustaining many severe cuts,<br> broken bones and a severe concussion where you hit your head on the sidewalk with substantial force. For some reason,<br> you did not bleed to death or die of your injuries. It is a miracle that you are alive. You should have died a month ago...\u201d\t<\/font><\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-bottom: 0in; line-height: 100%\">\u201c<font face=\"Andalus,<br> serif\">A month?! How could I have been in hospital for a month? I can't pay for this!\u201d she exclaimed,<br> feeling the panic rise within her.<\/font><\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-bottom: 0in; line-height: 100%\">\u201c<font face=\"Andalus,<br> serif\">I don't want you to worry about money right now,<br>\u201d the man said. \u201cI want you to concentrate on getting better and working out how this thing happened to you. Right now,<br> they're looking for someone to charge with attempted murder. There are fingerprints on the coat that was lying on the stairs which may give the police some clues...\u201d<\/font><\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-bottom: 0in; line-height: 100%\">\u201c<font face=\"Andalus,<br> serif\">He didn't hurt me!\u201d Iyva interrupted. \u201cHe was trying to help!\u201d<\/font><\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-bottom: 0in; line-height: 100%\"><font face=\"Andalus,<br> serif\">The man smiled knowingly. \u201cAnd that's why I'm here. I'm Ja'tel. I told the police that the A'mara would be investigating this case.\u201d<\/font><\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-bottom: 0in; line-height: 100%\">\u201c<font face=\"Andalus,<br> serif\">But why?\u201d she asked. \u201cI don't understand.\u201d<\/font><\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-bottom: 0in; line-height: 100%\">\u201c<font face=\"Andalus,<br> serif\">We decided that a murder investigation was unlikely to yield anything except an innocent person convicted of a crime they didn't commit,<br>\u201d Ja'tel explained further. \u201cThe person you met saved your life. Had he been trying to kill you,<br> all he needed to do was walk away. So,<br> he wasn't trying to kill you. Whatever happened,<br> it was an accident. Furthermore,<br> I lied. The police found no fingerprints on the coat. Your friend took great care to make sure his prints were not there. He even used an apartment which was vacant at the time; we checked. Do you know who you met?\u201d<\/font><\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-bottom: 0in; line-height: 100%\"><font face=\"Andalus,<br> serif\">Iyva shook her head. \u201cI had never seen him before,<br> but he spoke to me with great familiarity. He said he could give me anything I needed. It kinda spooked me a little. When he started to give me the coat,<br> he came close to me. It frightened me. I... I... reacted.\u201d<\/font><\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-bottom: 0in; line-height: 100%\">\u201c<font face=\"Andalus,<br> serif\">What do you mean by that,<br> Iyva?\u201d Ja'tel asked gently. \u201cYou reacted...\u201d<\/font><\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-bottom: 0in; line-height: 100%\">\u201c<font face=\"Andalus,<br> serif\">I don't know what else to call it. But usually,<br> when I react,<br> the other person flies backwards... into a wall or something. But this time,<br> something went wrong...\u201d<\/font><\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-bottom: 0in; line-height: 100%\">\u201c<font face=\"Andalus,<br> serif\">It rebounded?\u201d Ja'tel offered.<\/font><\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-bottom: 0in; line-height: 100%\">\u201c<font face=\"Andalus,<br> serif\">Yes. It requires a very strong connection to the leya to do what he did for you that night. So,<br> your hero is someone unknown to us at present. Because of this fact,<br> we are guarding you until this other person is made known to us.\u201d<\/font><\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-bottom: 0in; line-height: 100%\">\u201c<font face=\"Andalus,<br> serif\">But he saved my life!\u201d Iyva said indignantly. \u201cHow would he be a danger to me?\u201d<\/font><\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-bottom: 0in; line-height: 100%\">\u201c<font face=\"Andalus,<br> serif\">There <b>are<\/b> others who can use the leya,<br>\u201d Ja'tel explained. \u201cBut some do not use it for good.\u201d<\/font><\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-bottom: 0in; line-height: 100%;\">\n\u201c<font face=\"Andalus,<br> serif\">Why would he be interested in me?\u201d<\/font><\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-bottom: 0in; line-height: 100%;\">\n\u201c<font face=\"Andalus,<br> serif\">Because you are very strong in the leya. Another A'mara was here to take watch. Yes,<br> Iyva and Levon would have much to talk about.<\/font><\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-bottom: 0in; line-height: 100%\"><font face=\"Andalus,<br> serif\">Iyva\nwatched as Ja\u2019tel left the room and a teenager about her age came in. She tried to avoid blushing as she noticed that he was handsome and kind-looking. <\/font><\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-bottom: 0in; line-height: 100%\">\u201c<font face=\"Andalus,<br> serif\">Thank you,<br> I take the compliment,<br>\u201d he said as he sat down next to her. <\/font><\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-bottom: 0in; line-height: 100%\">\u201c<font face=\"Andalus,<br> serif\">What?\u201d she asked,<br> confused. <\/font><\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-bottom: 0in; line-height: 100%\">\u201c<font face=\"Andalus,<br> serif\">You were just thinking about your opinion that I\u2019m handsome and kind-looking,<br>\u201d Levon said. \u201cSo,<br> I thank you \u2013 that was very kind of you.\u201d<\/font><\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-bottom: 0in; line-height: 100%\">\u201c<font face=\"Andalus,<br> serif\">But I didn\u2019t say it! How did you know?\u201d Iyva asked blushing bright red. <\/font><\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-bottom: 0in; line-height: 100%\">\u201c<font face=\"Andalus,<br> serif\">Your first lesson in A\u2019mara training,<br>\u201d he explained. \u201cMost A\u2019mara can feel emotions from those around them. Some of us can hear actual thoughts.
