I attended a funeral wake last night.\r\n\r\n<em>\u5b9f\u306f\u6628\u65e5\u3001\u3042\u308b\u65b9\u306e\u304a\u901a\u591c\u306b\u53c2\u5217\u3057\u3066\u304d\u307e\u3057\u305f\u3002<\/em>\r\n\r\n \r\n\r\nThe deceased is Mr. Yamamoto Kiyokazu,<br> the president of Japanese traditional roof tile technology conservation committee who holds the nationally recognized selection preservation technology. It means he is a holder of \"National treasure\" in craftsman department. I started weaving because of this project of \"Ancient roof tile Reproduction Project\" for the restoration of the Heijo Palace in Nara city which began in around 2001.\u00a0He is a genuine craftsman who supported my weaving activities. Ramie cloth is needed when people make roof tile in\u00a0the traditional way. I saw many\u00a0media\u00a0treat this big news so some of Japanese might have known his passing away. I started learning about cultural assets and folklore since 2001,<br> and I met him same year. so I learned a lot through talking with him in the project,<br> like history,<br> techniques,<br> tools,<br> preparation,<br> the attitude as a craftsman,<br> the way of thinking,<br> the way of living,<br> sometimes playing... not only the techniques but also philosophy as a craftsman.\r\n\r\nWhen I visited his office sometimes I just listened. Because I'm not his disciple or family not a business partner,<br> not a government people... so it may be easy for him to tweet\u00a0something he wanted to say and worried about. But in recent years,<br> having more opportunities to talk with elderly craftsmen and their families,<br> I feel that the creation of craftsmen 's digital archive is like a \" Shukatsu\/\u7d42\u6d3b\" in Japanese,<br> it means \"Making plans and decisions for the end of your life\".\r\n\r\nCraftsman's work is closely related to their life itself,<br> and is connected many things such as disciple,<br> friends,<br> families,<br> techniques,<br> tools,<br> introduced media,<br> photographs,<br> videos... etc. What we can do is collect these information and record their voice about talking their life,<br> work,<br> family and about the information what they have. To record the paths in their life.\r\n\r\nI feel that this is the aim of making digital archives on craftsmen and engineers. I think that their skills,<br> wisdom,<br> human relations were conveyed in detail to their families or disciples before. Objectively observe and feel what they want me to do,<br> what they need,<br> how I can help... and then just keep doing my best... this is the most important thing to create their archives with appreciation and respectation.
