Two days just wasn’t long enough to do what we did,
” Reggie said as we sat in the back of a taxi leaving the apartment.

“It certainly has was,
” I agreed “Mission accomplished though.”

“I hope,
” he said. We’d just left the apartment office. We’d just completed canceling the lease and the various utilities online. We knew better to expect the return of any of our MANY deposits. We’d played that game before. We always lost. They ALWAYS found a reason to keep the deposit.

The weekend had been a mad scramble. We had sold everything that we could sell,
including our cars. What we couldn’t sell we had donated to charity. What we couldn’t donate we threw in the dumpster. The money had been used to stock the boat,
and buy some new things for the boat that might come in handy.

Like Ammo. Last stop this morning had been wally-world. We had stocked up on bullets.

Then we’d called a cab. It took us as close to our slip as it could. We paid the driver,
gave him a BIG tip,
walked to the boat,
boarded and left. “What do you think?“ Reggie asked me.

It was cold,
ice on the river cold. I snuggled up against him some,
we were in the wheelhouse. It had a heater so it was fairly warm inside. I still liked to snuggle.

It had snowed that night. Just a dusting but the boat and the crab claw was crystal white.

“That Crab Claw is a work of genius,
” I told him,
and it was. He’d attached flexible solar arrays to it and installed electric wenches for positioning. It was all controlled from behind the wheel.

The Scoota had been designed as a pure power boat. Reggie had modified that somewhat. From the mast he'd hung a modified Crab Claw sail,
also called an Oceanic Lateen. It was a combination sail,
solar collector and a nifty shade too. Even on a cloudy day it produced enough wattage to power the twin electric thrusters. The Power Cat was silent as it moved downriver at just over steerage way. It’s Range was unlimited and the fuel was free. All it needed was the wind and the sun. The Honda outboards were just for backup.

“Are we going anywhere?” Reggie asked me after we had been on the river for a few hours

“What do you mean?” I responded.

“Do we have a destination?” he asked.

“Not particularly,
” I said,
“we’ve avoided being ‘thrown out onto the street’. We’re warm and safe. That’s enough.”

“I agree. That being the case. Let’s drop anchor on the downstream side of an island and just sit a while,
” he said.

So we did. It wasn’t a lot of fun boating in the fog. The solar array was the _full spectrum_ type and worked off UV and Infrared but it was having a hard time charging much. We only use the power when we had too. Mostly we just drifted. We decided it would be best to stop if we could. We found an uninhabited island in the middle of the river a good ways from shore. No _hot spots_ appeared on our infrared vision googles (state of the art,
twenty years ago,
bought on e-bay) so no fire were lit. In this weather a fire would be needed to stay warm on the island. It appeared to be uninhabited. If anyone was going to bother us there they’d have to work for it. We’d most likely see them before they saw us at any rate.

We stayed there a few days,
a week maybe. We didn’t count the time. We ‘settled in’ to the boat. Things were moved,
the electronics were wired and rewired,
until until we got it right,
until we got it the way that we wanted it to be. We’d been somewhat rushed during the initial launch.

THEN,
we began a slow drift down the river in the fog. We used sonar,
radar and our passive night vision goggles (infrared) a LOT. Each night we’d find an island or a sand bar to protect us from drifting river junk. We weren’t in a big hurry,
all we needed to do was to move south and keep ahead of the pack ice.
***
***
##
***To Be Continued***

***

I hope you are enjoying this
[Yarn ( https://classteaching.wordpress.com/2015/05/21/spinning-a-pedagogical-yarn-the-role-of-storytelling-in-the-classroom/)
http://public-domain.zorger.com/samantha-at-the-worlds-fair/three-hobos-in-rags-bums-chat-story-teller-friends-bff-three-of-a-kind.png
.
Perhaps you might also enjoy
[Other Books (https://www.amazon.com/-/e/B00DXISW74)
that I have written.
.
***AND***
.
Follow me @everittdmickey
.
That's my Blog
in which I pontificate on [Technology (http://theemergingfuture.com/speed-technological-advancement.htm),
[Philosophy ( https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Agorism),
[Religion ( https://www.google.com/webhp?sourceid=chrome-instant&ion=1&espv=2&ie=UTF-8#safe=off&q=agnosticism),
[Politics ( https://www.google.com/webhp?sourceid=chrome-instant&ion=1&espv=2&ie=UTF-8#q=anarchism),
[Economics (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Free_market)
and occasionally
***[ShantyBoats ( http://shantyboatliving.com/)***
.
In my Blog I write about,
and hopefully engage my readers in discussions about,
the possible lifestyles that we will encounter after
[TEOTWAWKI (http://tspwiki.com/index.php?title=TEOTWAWKI) happens.
.
It WILL happen,
[one way ( http://offgridsurvival.com/mostlikelyshtfscenarios/) or [another (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Post-scarcity_economy),
probably something in between.
One thing is for sure and for certain though,
the world will NOT remain the same.
.
So Come on Down!
Sit a spell.
I got the Coffee on.

https://storage.googleapis.com/steemimgimgs/2016/10/20/coffeefc1c3.jpg

***

***

The [Hobo Picture (http://public-domain.zorger.com/) is a Public Domain image from
__Samantha at the Worlds Fair__
by Josiah Allen's Wife (Marietta Holley)
Illustrated by
Baron C.
