Onward to freedom!</p>\n<p><img src=\"http://i.imgur.com/mVNXWFXl.jpg\" width=\"480\" height=\"640\"/></p>\n<h3>Alex Eaton (Right) and me (Left) at our first Bitcoin Meetup</h3>\n<h3><strong>&nbsp;Why I Joined Steemit&nbsp;</strong></h3>\n<p>It’s been a long time coming, folks. The concept around Steemit that pushed me away at first was when some random commenter on reddit coined it as “the killer of facebook”. I don’t know why but my first instinct when anyone says “x &nbsp;will be the y killer” is to about face and never look back. Here’s my reasoning: when something like Facebook comes around, it isn’t toppled over by something that does the same as Facebook, but by something that does things differently (or better). Take Myspace for example, it ended up losing the race because people realized they wanted the high polish and uniform curation already built into Facebook instead of doing it themselves on Myspace. Facebook didn’t do what Myspace did better, it did something entirely different. Steemit to my pleasant surprise is not like Facebook, it is looking to do something worlds apart in utility. Whereas on Facebook most of the value and business opportunity goes to Facebook’s coffers, Steemit turns the concept of content sharing and curation on its head where the users and creators are the ones benefiting. The fact that Steem is a crypto helps matters further as banks (or gatekeepers as I call them) are not involved, leading to even more value returning to the content creators/curators. Due to what’s mentioned above, I can’t see a concept like Steemit failing anytime soon and it’s why I believe Steemit is here for the long haul. I would be remiss in not diving into this opportunity to become a part of an inclusive platform that immediately gets down to business and spreads value where it is merited (smells like opportunity). I am sure there’s a lot more to Steemit than meets the eye and look forward to learning more about it as I go.&nbsp;</p>\n<h2>&nbsp;B Libre!’s First Steemit Debut: Episode 21.       "body": "I believe part of the issue is the \"pay to play\" situation that's been created and perpetuated by these institutions. These well established companies have deep pockets and therefore the ability to invest in powerful tools/instruments (not to mention the space to store and utilize them) which means if seasoned and budding scientists alike are interested in practicing their craft for some pay, they must do so within these institutions. Obviously, as your post states, these institutions will want a piece of the pie for providing these tools and their facilities. Thus the cycle will continue on until we've figured out a different paradigm for pushing forward science while better rewarding the people doing the work.",
