| body |
Hello Steemit community!
你好! Hola! Привет! Olá! こんにちは! Servus! 안녕하세요! Bonjour! Ciao! Cześć! [](https://postimg.org/image/q92oolcet/) I would like to share with you my stories and photos from recent Eurasian journey [ Poland, Belarus, Russia, Mongolia, China, Turkey, Bosnia and Harzegovina, Monenegro and Croatia ] which I finished three weeks ago. At the beginning of July I went on an individual trip through nine countries. Initially idea as and plan looked simple but due to limited time ( 8 weeks ) and distance ( over 15 500 miles / over 25 000km ) and various side issues related with travelling in those particular countries I had started to realize that it will be challenging project. [](https://postimg.org/image/finsb0wlx/) _**Last photo which I have taken before I left north-east of England**_ After termination the rental agreement in north-eastern part of England I had got in to train to Yorkshire where I stopped for one night and then went straight to airport. Homeland was my first stop and due the fact that I've raised in southern Poland I had decided to spend four days on exploring major coastal city - Gdańsk and land of lakes in northern part of the country. [](https://postimg.org/image/t8mwxk93p/) _**Gdańsk - old town**_ [](https://postimg.org/image/6ceof8651/) _**Masurian Lake District**_ After getting an extra strength by spending a time mostly on wandering around old town and later surrounded by nature I had started to prepare myself to journey through place which is on the top of the least visited countries in Europe. Belarus leaded by authoritarian Lukashenko ruling the country for over 23 years is also the only place in Europe which practice death penalty. I must admit that I was anxious and worried a bit but at the same time I kept to be open-minded. Internally I had felt that curiosity was stronger than fear. Approximately 30 km before Polish-Belarusian border I had decided to continue my trip by hitchhiking and something funny happened after driver dropped me off 200 meters from the border. While I was browsing available options and possibilities on my smartphone on how to cross the border and what's interesting in the first Belarusian city, two women had come over to me and asked me if I would like to travel with them because they have a free seat at the back of their car. I willingly agreed and I was a bit surprised that my concerns about what to do next had resolved so easily. First thing which amazed me was calmness and surreal quietness which I haven't seen anywhere before in the cities. Style in architecture is similar like in other post-soviet countries but at the same time I really enjoyed heritage of past centuries visible among others in sacral buildings. Another advantage of Belarus is cleanliness on streets which you can notice on photos below. I have visited most countries in Europe and none of those countries were so clean. I often used to step out from main streets and tourist paths and even them were really in good condition. [](https://postimg.org/image/wz0sf261h/) [](https://postimg.org/image/5r3y7pw5x/) [](https://postimg.org/image/655a7bg9h/) [](https://postimg.org/image/gt9165q8l/) From the other hand quite difficult was for me to switch to Belarusian way of urban planning. I think that like many other people in Western culture I have got used to the thinking that every store, grocery, shop, supermarket or basic fast-food bar can be found in radius of 100-200 meters in every city with population more than 100 000. That came out to be often tricky to reflect even in Minsk which is a capital. After 6 days in western and central part of country I had decided that it is time to move on and travel to Russia. This idea seems to be an easy task however these two countries have an union, known also as a commonwealth which include their own law about freedom of movement, economical trade bonds and strong military cooperation. What did it mean for me? Basically it meant for me that I couldn't choose to cross these border controls which seemed to be most suitable for me at that time. I had to travel almost an extra 300km to triple border control point with Ukraine. Generally there are only two official border control for citizen of countries which are not from Belarus or Russia. One of them is the mentioned above and another one is located on triple border control with Latvia. I could risk and cross the border control in Smolensk but there would be a chance that several kilometers deep into the Russian territory I would had been stopped by custom service without border control stamp in my passport what would be equal with deportation me out of Russia and roughly 100$ of fine in best outcome. After I finally had got out from the capital on the seventh day I had been hitchhiking toward south-eastern direction. Due the fact that I travelled in the van which had been loaded in various local products the journey were passing by quite slow, even slower when we had to stopped in the middle of nowhere to wait for the owner of the shop. [](https://postimg.org/image/jom4d0u8l/) On the late afternoon I had arrived to Gomel and stayed there for the last night in Belarus. I didn't have too much time to explore that place because next day on the early morning I had started to implement quite insane task. I wanted to cover a distance of over 700km in optimistic time of 14 hours to Moscow. Google maps had calculated that by car travel that distance can be done in slightly over 9 hours but considering that hitchhiking is mostly the matter of luck I added extra 5 hours which would also allowed me to have a dinner, amount of time on crossing the border and also time included on waiting for a car driver who would have given me a ride to the destination place. Well... life had verified my plan and I realized that the car traffic in that particular area does not occur too often. I remember that I stopped for the last time somewhere around 15 kilometers from the border to send some postcards and experience how do people live on the cross-border zone countryside. [](https://postimg.org/image/8220bw6xh/) [](https://postimg.org/image/9v4x07s45/) [](https://postimg.org/image/nrhqpudqt/) [](https://postimg.org/image/soqpx7qc5/) It's amazing how people's perception vary in each country if it is about social issues, political views and opinion about neighbor country. It was my twelfth day of travelling and I had already learnt something about cultural differences and views of the people's in other countries about the happiness. At the same time I have also remind myself that as the human beings beyond the concept of borders we are all the same. No matter what's our origin, ethnicity, social status or religious beliefs. As soon as somebody had dropped me off 100 meters before the border I walked toward Belarusian control point where two soldiers ( I assumed so due to their military uniforms ) had stood and controlled people's passports. It was a peculiar experience because I was the only pedestrian there who was heading toward Russia but after a simple procedure everything had been completed properly and I was ready to move on to Russian border control. [](https://postimg.org/image/cvqcuhst1/) [](https://postimg.org/image/uztdf4qhh/) Life in Belarus flows in particular way and for sure there is an uniqueness in that. However during my further travel through this country I've noticed that many people have tendency to be withdrawn towards foreigners. Openness wasn't something common and this was even more observable when your Russian wasn't good enough. However beyond these issues I still have met friendly and fantastic people whom with I had spent a good time. Nothing is black and white and I think that in total I have a nice memories from that place and would come back there one day if a chance come up. What happened after Belarusian border control? That's the beginning of new adventures. Next part of stories from my journey on coming Monday ;) Cheers! |

\n\n[](https://postimg.org/image/8220bw6xh/)\n\n[](https://postimg.org/image/9v4x07s45/)\n\n[](https://postimg.org/image/nrhqpudqt/)\n\n[](https://postimg.org/image/soqpx7qc5/)\n\nIt's amazing how people's perception vary in each country if it is about social issues, political views and opinion about neighbor country.
