titleTerrorism and Religion
bodyThe topic opens itself to a labyrinthine web that is too difficult to entangle but I’ll try to take a stab at it. First off, I’m of the opinion that anyone who says that terrorism is undone with religion is, in fact, undone with insouciance about the matter at hand. It is only one factor in the gamut of causes; it is a very vital factor at that but not the most pertinent: POLITICAL TERROR AND TERRORISM ![](https://cdn.steemitimages.com/DQmWmhpuCDcA3ybuJhRaLV7bPp4i3FFxdim3pWPDhy8FRXf/image.png) 93 percent of all terrorist attacks occurred in countries with violent political terror. Less than one percent occurred in countries where there was no political terror. To analyze the link between levels of political terror and terrorism carried out by non-state actors, the GTI was compared to the Political Terror Scale (PTS). The PTS is measured using a 1 to 5 scale, with 1 representing ‘no political imprisonment’ and 5 representing ‘unrestrained political terror waged against the whole of population’. To explore the link between political terror and terrorism IEP has analyzed the location of all terrorist attacks in the Global Terrorism Database (GTD) in which at least one person was killed between 1989 and 2014. The locations of these 44,553 attacks were then compared to the Political Terror Scale. The figure shows that between 1989 and 2015, 93 percent of all terrorist attacks occurred in countries with violent political terror. Less than one percent occurred in countries where there was no political terror as measured by political imprisonment. THE LINK BETWEEN ONGOING CONFLICT & TERRORISM Fifty percent of all terrorist attacks between 1989 and 2014 occurred in countries with internal conflict while 41 percent occurred in countries involved in internationalized conflicts. Terrorism occurs outside of conflict or high levels of political terror only 0.5 percent of the time. But all this does not discount the role religion plays: REGION Terrorism is largely centralized in the Middle East and North Africa (MENA), South Asia and sub-Saharan Africa regions, which together account for 84 percent of attacks and 95 percent of deaths. ![](https://cdn.steemitimages.com/DQmVee7cgJZKkeC7A8xwWEfbsroh2nfPoMeKwQujc4U2S7w/image.png) It seems to be highly localized. ![](https://cdn.steemitimages.com/DQmYCrAZYwEYfdYM3Gd69XNpBLq5JQSvaYLMgykAhYAMaY1/image.png) ![](https://cdn.steemitimages.com/DQmWXem5ndTpJuSF62fp7RKceKqjwQq7mCQWDhbvtwBvmMS/image.png) The number of deaths is also maximum in these localized areas: ![](https://cdn.steemitimages.com/DQmWVorhhGwhxea7rZBmZQBRdqhDZCjHxrUcUHdwfR2B6wT/image.png) DEATHS FROM TERRORISM BY COUNTRY 2015 ![](https://cdn.steemitimages.com/DQmQUC8omvZMfRcBSpSNrZvyAERpSBSiXovGxkwsriSci7h/image.png) EXTREMISM AND ISLAM Extremism is not tied to Islam in its essence, or at least in the light of these polls, I’d like to qualify my assertion. Most Americans are worried about Islamic extremism, and most Muslim Americans share these concerns. ![](https://cdn.steemitimages.com/DQmSNmLpomxr432U5CG4YqePC5Sd2NNoTEXdx7Xv2WHYDBk/image.png) ![](https://cdn.steemitimages.com/DQmZGsg8knYwAoZrprfSMjk691o9E5MWBKo9RXNdxx3Fqgy/image.png) ![](https://cdn.steemitimages.com/DQmX2p9vT97yccprruzYii1g3hzy5ULfJMhSbVcunkkJpiK/image.png) Roughly eight-in-ten U.S. Muslims (84%) say such tactics can rarely (8%) or never (76%) be justified. The share of Muslims who say such tactics can often or sometimes be justified (12%) is similar to the share saying this among the general public (14%). And Muslims are more likely than the public as a whole to say that targeting civilians for political, social or religious causes can never be justified. One can argue that separatist movements are nationalist and not religious in nature. If one scratches the surface, any group clamoring for separatism AND resorting to extremism has roots in religious ideology. However, I also believe that it is only a percentage of people who endorse religious extremism perhaps due to the intolerant environment they were raised in. No one is “born” an extremist, but if they live and breathe in an environment that glorifies extremism, then that becomes their way of life. titlePrivelege
bodyThe spectacle of sky high skyscrapers hoisted deep in the darkness of the night is about as inviting as bemusing. Those towering buildings were figuratively the apotheosis of human civilization, atleast they were in my eyes, eyes with its gazes curtailed to two story buildings, with seepage further ruining the dilapidated ruins. The spectacle waned off with time, but my curious interest sustained through the years. Places divested of dogma, traditions that never arrested individual expression; sure, America was a conundrum, and exciting still. With ambitions stifled in voiceless echoes, the US of A was an idyllic liberator. Naturally, those born in such first world countries seemed more privileged than I ever was, or so was my provincial belief. In India, it is almost a norm for the parents to sustain a child through college, and even save their lifelong earnings for their marriage. For an average Indian, a 16 year old working at McDonald's is rather unseemly, quite incongruous with one’s ideal ambitions. Besides, the student loans in US are ghastly, almost a vicious trap to pay off college; a scourge we Indian are most oblivious of. I write this whilst traveling back to my college (private) which my father paid for, in a air-conditioned coach my sister paid for, after having spent a couple of days with my girlfriend in a room (almost a monthly affair) that my sister rents. Countless bucks I never earned and would never have to pay for. You tell me, how privileged am I? Maybe a little more than a white guy my age in a first world country? Maybe so.

titleThe Gloom and Doom of FIrecrakers
bodyDiwali, the most important of the thousands of festivals celebrated in India, is a festival of lights. It is often marked by resplendent dottings in the sky and countless luminous artful bursts of colors. The deep moorings of religion in a country with a population of 1.3 billion are manifested exorbitantly in its enthralling celebration of festivals. The bursting of firecrackers on the holy festival of Diwali is more of a norm than tradition, something that has swept into the mainstay of the culture and has seemingly obliterated a more subtle underlying message on which the entire festival hinges, "light over darkness". Ironically, the festival of lights has more than a billion people choking in its aftermath. ![[email protected]](https://cdn.steemitimages.com/DQmUwFa3UNLW4i18yJjQdu6m5Ynp6jfzmDU9uMDL1jko5ax/[email protected]) Consider this : 1) Data recorded by monitoring stations show that the levels of toxins that can accumulate in humans, animals, and plants, jump three to four times the average levels of October and November (India). 2) In 2003, Khaiwal Ravindra and his two colleagues at the department of environmental sciences and engineering at Guru Jambeshwar University studied the effect of firecrackers on the air quality of Hisar City in Haryana during Diwali. They found a clear link—the levels of sulfur dioxides increased tenfold while that of nitrogen oxides and particulate matter increased two to three folds. 3) Similar studies have been undertaken by scientists from the Meghnad Saha Institute of Technology in Howrah, All India Institute of Hygiene and Public Sanitation, Kolkata, and Jadavpur University. They too recorded an exponential spike in pollution. 4) The gunpowder used in the roughly 240 million pounds of fireworks bought for Independence Day releases about 50,000 metric tons of carbon dioxide. Based on estimates from the EPA, a forest fire in the continental U.S. produces 18 metric tons of carbon per acre. So the amount of carbon emissions from all Fourth of July fireworks is about equivalent to the amount of carbon produced by a single 2,700-acre wildfire in the continental United States. 5) An NOAA study found that particulates in the air increase by 370 percent around July 4, jumping daily averages by 42 percent. So, it can be established that firecrackers certainly exacerbate an already squalid state of order. But the question is - How much? July 4 fireworks emit the equivalent of 50,000 metric tons of carbon dioxide into the atmosphere. That’s a lot, but it’s still small potatoes in the grand scheme of things — the U.S. emits nearly seven billion tons of CO2 annually. Contrast this with India, we produced about 1.83 billion metric tons of CO2 in 2012. So, it really is a drop in a bucket but, the important but is the rapid surge in pollution in a very short period of time. It is not about the after-effects of smoke after it has wafted up and disseminated in the air but the after-effects it has when it is looming in the atmosphere still. ![](https://cdn.steemitimages.com/DQmdf9EjTrb5nKLDqah3C85Ws2LVWxV3QkhnEyUWHQbQuxd/image.png) The chemicals used in firecrackers : Copper: Irritates the respiratory tract. Cadmium: Leads to anemia by reducing the capacity of blood to carry oxygen. Zinc: Can cause metal fume fever and induces vomiting. Lead: Harms the nervous system. Magnesium: Metal fume fever is caused by Magnesium fumes. Sodium: It is a highly reactive element and caused burns when it is combined with moisture. It isn’t only about the ever-mounting CO2! In the US (population of 327 million) itself, there are about 25 million people with asthma. Scale that to the population of India and you’ll see troubling that is. Besides : 1) There is increasing recognition of the detrimental effect of urban air pollution on human health both in the long- and in the short term. 2) Adults exposed to high levels of ambient air pollution have shown an increased prevalence of a chronic cough, phlegm, and breathlessness. 3) An increased risk of developing respiratory symptoms, asthma, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), allergic rhinitis, lower respiratory tract infections, and lung cancers. A 2007 study by the Meghnad Saha Institute of Technology in Howrah, which was restricted to the Howrah area, revealed an increase in the incidence of cardiovascular mortality and morbidity of 125% and 175%, respectively. There are other studies that concur : 1) In the 2014 study, ‘Potential Impact of Fireworks on Respiratory Health’, in Lung India, a peer-reviewed journal of the Indian Chest Society, Caroline Gouder and Stephen Montefort wrote: “Adults exposed to high levels of ambient air pollution have shown increased prevalence of a chronic cough, phlegm, and breathlessness and are, therefore, at an increased risk of developing respiratory symptoms, asthma, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, allergic rhinitis, lower respiratory tract infections, and lung cancers.” 2) A 2007 study, ‘Recreational Atmospheric Pollution Episodes: Inhalable Metalliferous Particles from Firework Displays’, published in Atmospheric Environment, had found that children were susceptible in particular since their defenses against particulate matter and other gaseous air pollutants were weaker. Also, children engaged in greater physical activities, increasing the intake of polluted air into their lungs. Furthermore, standard noise level set by the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) for the ambient environment is 60 dB during daytime and 50 decibels during night time. Fireworks can be loud and can exceed 140 decibels. Noise at 85 decibels above can damage hearing. Not to mention there hardly is enough area to burst those crackers safely, and when they are often lit without any account for safety. ![](https://cdn.steemitimages.com/DQmYp2EEoacxMyBfAb9sb4qgrus5ZRm6F1TYPrQwhn7SvyC/image.png) Much like it is with smoking in public, the consequences of your actions need not be borne by others.
