| body | I've been following Robert Kiyosaki teachings since about 2007 when I first read his book Rich Dad, Poor Dad and that literally was the red pill that would change my life for good! Since then, I've been doing A LOT of changes in my life, started to invest in physical gold and silver, bought my first rental property in Gilbert Arizona in 2013, started a manufacturing business in California that I moved in Reno Nevada in 2017 with sales over 1/2 million per year, invested in more real-estate few years later, bought a business in Arizona for cashflow purpose, looking at getting more real-estate and currently and finally preparing myself to quit my job and move out California! https://youtu.be/vkCXytxwH-M |

| body | As expected (and predicted, and propagandized), China's National People's Congress overwhelmingly passed a constitutional amendment to eliminate presidential term limits, paving the way for President Xi Jinping to stay in power after his second term ends in 2023. The vote was as follows, per the AFP's Joanna Chiu: 2958 in favor, 2 against, 3 abstentions, 1 invalid vote. As we noted previously, Sunday’s move will make Mr. Xi much more powerful than he already was, and will "dampen any remnants of resistance to his rule", said Zhang Baohui, professor of international affairs at Lingnan University in Hong Kong. "Once people know he will serve for who knows how long, it will strengthen his power and motivate everybody to bandwagon with him," said Mr. Zhang. "Any rival will think he will be almighty." In other words, "Dear Leader" has returned. * * * This historic shift was predicted by many since last fall, when Xi refused to appoint a successor as his power would begin to wane in a year or two as he entered what would've been a lame duck period for his presidency - the second half of his second term. At the same party congress, Mr. Xi conspicuously broke with precedent by choosing not to name a pair of much younger officials to the Politburo’s ruling inner circle, the seven-member standing committee, to serve as his heirs-in-waiting. Instead, Mr. Xi chose men — no women — who were closer to his own age or older. Mr. Xi’s strongman style has been compared to that of the Russian president, Vladimir V. Putin. But even Mr. Putin, who has amassed considerable personal power, did not try to erase his country’s constitutional limit on serving more than two consecutive terms as president as he approached that limit in 2008. Instead, he arranged for a close adviser with limited personal influence, Dmitri A. Medvedev, to serve as president for a single term while Mr. Putin held the post of prime minister. Mr. Putin then returned to the presidency in 2012, and is running this year for re-election to another term. Mr. Xi may now have even greater power, and the question will be how he chooses to use it. "Xi Jinping is susceptible to making big mistakes because there are now almost no checks or balances," said Willy Lam, an adjunct professor at the Chinese University of Hong Kong who is the author of a biography of Mr. Xi in 2015. "Essentially, he has become emperor for life." In another Xi-approved break with tradition, Wang Qishan, a close ally of the president's who helped carry out Xi's campaign against corruption and disloyalty in the party, appears set to return to power as vice president. Wang, 69, stepped down from a party position last year because of his age. In kneejerk response, some China commentators had rather harsh words for the dramatic change, with WSJ commentator Li Yuan noting that: "even though this has been talked about for a few years, it still feels like one man’s Pearl Harbor attack on the whole country." And as Axios' Bill Bishop writes, rather ominously, Xi is working to obliterate any boundaries between party and state and to reinsert the Communist Party of China (CPC) into all aspects of China's economy and society - all while ensuring he's the unchallenged embodiment of the CPC. The end result will be Xi's complete dominion over all parts of Chinese government and society. However, GoldMoney's Alasdair Macleod has a slightly different view of this move: The days when China was the cheapest cost-base for labour in manufacturing are over. Manufacturing for export markets is being increasingly mechanised, lowering unit costs and releasing labour for future expansion in other higher-value industries. The Communist party’s plans include the upgrading of infrastructure and the transition of the economy towards serving the growing middle classes. Together with proposals to extend her own industrial revolution into the wider Asian landmass, the full transition will probably take up to twenty years. This is the reason, according to the better-informed China experts, that the National Party Congress currently being held is doing away with the limit on the duration of Xi’s presidency, so that he can complete the plans of which he is the principal architect. It is not, as reported in Western media, only the glory for Xi of being a dictator for life. This year’s NPC, in granting Xi the facility to oversee his plans, fully endorses them and their progress. The move away from depending on cheap exports to America and elsewhere is likely to gain momentum, reducing the relative importance of Trump’s tariffs. Instead, China is creating what amounts to a large free trade area throughout Asia with her partners in the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation. Why should you care about China's seemingly totalitarian shift? Mike Krieger concludes poignantly: The reason is because a major shift in the polices of the second largest economy in the world, populated with over a billion people and run by leadership intent on establishing a far more dominant position on the world scale militarily and politically, will affect everyone. Instead, China is creating what amounts to a large free trade area throughout Asia with her partners in the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation.\n\nWhy should you care about China's seemingly totalitarian shift? Mike Krieger concludes poignantly:\n\nThe reason is because a major shift in the polices of the second largest economy in the world, populated with over a billion people and run by leadership intent on establishing a far more dominant position on the world scale militarily and politically, will affect everyone.\n\n\n\n\nSource: https://www.zerohedge.com/news/2018-03-11/its-official-china-repeals-term-limits-allowing-xi-stay-power-forever",

| body | When you think of the most dangerous, violent cities in the world, do you picture slums in Third World countries with vicious drug cartels or arrogant warlords? Maybe the kind of violence where enemies are decapitated and whole families are murdered seem like things that happen far away in some terrifying, exotic locale. Some of this is true – but FIVE of the world’s most violent cities are right here on the American mainland and another is in an American territory. The list was created by researchers of anti-violence think-tank Seguridad, Justicia Y Paz (Security, Justice, and Peace), who made their rankings based on statistics of homicides per 100,000 residents. The vast majority of the cities on the list were in Central and South America. Interestingly, the violence in Venezuela appears to have dropped in violence this year, but not because it’s suddenly become a mecca of safety. The official situation there has devolved so much that they simply can’t track all the homicides. But back to America We pride ourselves on our first world status and civilized societies, and yet four of our cities ended up on the list of the most dangerous and violent locales on the planet. They are: #13 St. Louis #21 Baltimore #32 San Juan #41 New Orleans #42 Detroit How did these cities make the list? St. Louis, Missouri: Since the Ferguson riots, the entire state of Missouri has seen a sharp increase in violence. This has culminated in the city of St. Louis, which had a 2017 murder rate of 65.83 per hundred thousand people. There are thousands of violent crimes each year in the city, which only has a population of about 320,000 people. Baltimore, Maryland: The city of Baltimore has an astounding murder rate of 55.48 people per hundred thousand. Last year’s murder rate was nearly as high as the year that the riots erupted over the killing of Freddie Gray by city police officers. There’s a murder nearly every day of the year in Baltimore and the police force there is widely considered to be one of the most corrupt – if not the most corrupt – in the nation. San Juan, Puerto Rico: Many will think that San Juan earned its place on the list due to the devastation wrought by two back to back hurricanes, but it was already bad for years before. DHS ties this to drug trafficking. The island territory had begun to see signs of improvement in 2015 after a massive spike in 2011 that brought murders to an all-time high. The homicide numbers didn’t immediately escalate after Hurricane Maria, but as the unrelenting darkness continued, violent crime began to increase until it reached 48.70 murders per hundred thousand residents. New Orleans, Louisiana: Murders in New Orleans, Louisiana fell last year but armed robberies and non-fatal shootings have risen by a whopping 30% since 2010. The city is renowned for its food, music, and festivals, making it a popular destination for tourists. Yet, the 40.10 murders per hundred thousand people rank The Big Easy as more dangerous than some of the most notorious cities in Brazil and Columbia. Detroit, Michigan: Detroit is the fourth American city to be featured on the list of places you’re most likely to be murdered. With a homicide rate of 39.69 per one hundred thousand people, Detroit was the 42 most dangerous city in the world according to these statistics. The city used to be an American hub of industry, but when the automotive manufacturers left, it fell into disrepair and poverty. Residents have a whopping unemployment rate of almost 11%, the population has plummeted, and since it is one of the poorest cities in the nation, perhaps the residents who remain simply can’t afford to get out. For those who are interested in preparedness, the collapse of these cities is something to watch. Note how the increase of violence in many cases ties in with a lack of confidence in local law enforcement officers. A failing economy is another factor, as increased desperation leads to increased crime. What other cities made the list? Here’s the list of the 50 most violent cities in the world in its entirety: Los Cabos, Mexico Caracas, Venezuela Acapulco, Mexico Natal, Brasil Tijuana, Mexico La Paz, Mexico Fortaleza, Brazil Victoria, Mexico Guayana, Mexico Belem, Brazil Vitória da Conquista, Brazil Culicacan, Mexico St. Louis, Missouri, USA Maceio, Brazil Cape Town, South Africa Kingston, Jamaica San Salvador, El Salvador Aracaju, Brazil Feira de Santana, Brazil Juarez, Mexico Baltimore, Maryland, USA Recife, Brazil Maturin, Venezuela Guatemala City, Guatemala Salvador, Brazil San Pedro Sula, Honduras Valencia, Venezuela Cali, Columbia Chihuahua, Mexico João Pessoa, Brazil Obregon, Mexico San Juan, Puerto Rico Barquisimeto, Venezuela Manaus, Brazil Distrito Central, Honduras Tepic, Mexico Palmira, Columbia Reynosa, Mexico Porto Alegre. Brazil Macapa, Brazil New Orleans, Louisiana, USA Detroit, Michican, USA Mazatlán, Mexico Durban, South Africa Campos dos Goytacazes, Brazil Nelson Mandela Bay, South Africa Campina Grande, Brazil Teresina, Brazil Vitoria, Brazil Cúcuta, Colombia Seguridad, Justicia Y Paz blames much of the violence on drug cartel turf wars, economic crises, and violence perpetrated by gangs like MS-13. Do you have any doubt that violence will be abundant when the SHTF? All you need to do is look at this list and study these cities to see how violence escalates when the rule of law collapses, when economies crash and people starve, when police officers go dirty, and when criminal gangs turn into the ruling class. This is just further evidence to support my belief that preppers must be armed. If you are prepping to survive a long-term event, make sure that you plan to survive the escalation of violence, too. | body | One evening in early February, local police rounded up Ernesto Marquez along with hundreds of his fellow Venezuelans in the Colombian border city of Cucuta, drove them to the frontier and ushered them back into the crumbling country they had previously fled. The pushbacks by Cucuta law enforcement are part of a new policy response to long-simmering tensions between local residents and the Venezuelan migrants, who sleep by their hundreds in public places, which have begun to boil over violently. Marquez, a 38-year-old chef, said Venezuela was too dangerous to sleep outside, so he stayed awake all night. In the morning, he walked back into Cucuta, alongside many of those deported the day before. "We were loaded like dogs, like any other load of freight," Marquez said. Once a chef at the Princesa Plaza, an upscale hotel in the Venezuelan city of Maracay, he now sells individual cigarettes to save money for a bus ride to Colombia's capital, Bogota. Marquez's quick return underscores the difficulties the Colombian government has had controlling the influx of Venezuelans, impoverished by hyperinflation and a sinking economy. Migración Colombia reported in February that more than 600,000 Venezuelans have entered the country through official crossings. Estimates of the number of irregular entries differ but may be as many of the legal entrants. "The deportations don't do anything," said Father David Perez of the Catholic diocese of Cucuta, who runs a charity kitchen for Venezuelans at the border. "They send the migrants out and they return through the smuggling paths." The border between Colombia and Venezuela stretches over hundreds of miles through jungle territory controlled by a myriad of armed groups who oversee the hundreds of informal pathways for smuggling Colombian drugs and Venezuelan contraband as well as people. Experts doubt Colombia could impose effective immigration controls in such a lawless zone. "The borders are unstable at the moment due to both the humanitarian situation and to the number of criminal and violent actors," said Ivan Briscoe, Bogota-based Latin America director with the International Crisis Group. "I do not think that Colombia has either the resources or experience to be able to manage a large outflow of migrants on its own." Suggesting a heightened sense of urgency on the government's part, Colombian president Juan Manuel Santos visited Cucuta on February 9th to announce new actions addressing the refugee crisis. Santos suspended registry for Colombian border entry cards and deployed 3,000 military and police personnel to boost border security, noting that Colombia was spending millions of dollars to support the migrants. "Colombia has never lived through a situation like what we have today," Santos said in a televised address before reporters and local authorities gathered to receive him in Cucuta. The same day, Brazil's defense minister, visiting his own country's Venezuelan border, echoed Santos' remarks, deploying the military to the border and ordering the relocation of tens of thousands of migrants from the border zone. On February 12th, Brazil's president, Michel Temer, visited the border city of Boa Vista, where a growing number of Venezuelan refugees are straining local resources. "Obviously it's a reflection of the huge concern in these countries," said Briscoe with the Crisis Group. "It's a complex humanitarian emergency. International support is crucial." Beyond the immediate humanitarian concerns, Colombia faces long-term threats of destabilization as masses of Venezuelans move into the country without proper reception, health care, or social services, Briscoe said. Both Colombia and Brazil will hold presidential elections this year, and neither incumbent will contest them. Temer has said he will not stand, and Santos is limping to the end of a second term, so there is little incentive for a long-term thought-through response to the Venezuelan refugee surge. Santos' measures stopped short of extending more aid to the hundreds of thousands of Venezuelans now stranded in Colombia, or the countless more who are still sure to arrive, according to Ana Teresa Ramos, founder of Asociacion Deredez, which helps displaced people at the border with support from the United Nations Refugee Agency. "It's good that he came, but he didn't do anything to help the Venezuelans," she said of Santos' announcements. She said Colombia should work to provide documentation for the Venezuelans so that they can travel onward in the country, find legal work, and enroll their children in school. And she said Colombia will have to provide those services at no cost, as few Venezuelans are able to pay. Despite the urgency conveyed by Santos and Temer's visits, it is unclear that Venezuela's neighbors will be able to stem the flow of people over the border. Colombia's control of its border zone has weakened in recent years. Coca cultivation in the department surrounding Cucuta increased sharply between 2015 and 2016, from 28,482 acres to 61,358 acres, according to U.N. figures, a sign of the growing presence of groups that run the drug trade. Lawlessness in Venezuela has provided an opportune point of export for Colombian drugs, according to the International Crisis Group, and many illicit goods that would have left Colombia through Panama or the Caribbean coast now cross the border in the opposite direction of the migrants. Armed groups now operate across the border with impunity—an important sign of weak state control. Such is the case with the ELN, an armed group that local magazine SEMANA reported in February were waging attacks in Colombia from bases in Venezuela. People regularly turn up dead on the illicit roads and footpaths that traverse the area. Ramos of Asociacion Deredez said that any tightening of official border control will only push desperate Venezuelans onto illicit routes, by which they'll continue to arrive en masse in Colombia. "All we can hope for is help from the other countries," she said. Source: https://psmag.com/social-justice/colombia-is-not-dealing-with-its-refugee-crisis |

"body": "\n\nOne evening in early February, local police rounded up Ernesto Marquez along with hundreds of his fellow Venezuelans in the Colombian border city of Cucuta, drove them to the frontier and ushered them back into the crumbling country they had previously fled.\n\nThe pushbacks by Cucuta law enforcement are part of a new policy response to long-simmering tensions between local residents and the Venezuelan migrants, who sleep by their hundreds in public places, which have begun to boil over violently.\n\nMarquez, a 38-year-old chef, said Venezuela was too dangerous to sleep outside, so he stayed awake all night. In the morning, he walked back into Cucuta, alongside many of those deported the day before.\n\n\"We were loaded like dogs, like any other load of freight,\" Marquez said. Once a chef at the Princesa Plaza, an upscale hotel in the Venezuelan city of Maracay, he now sells individual cigarettes to save money for a bus ride to Colombia's capital, Bogota.\n\nMarquez's quick return underscores the difficulties the Colombian government has had controlling the influx of Venezuelans, impoverished by hyperinflation and a sinking economy. Migración Colombia reported in February that more than 600,000 Venezuelans have entered the country through official crossings. Estimates of the number of irregular entries differ but may be as many of the legal entrants.\n\n\"The deportations don't do anything,\" said Father David Perez of the Catholic diocese of Cucuta, who runs a charity kitchen for Venezuelans at the border. \"They send the migrants out and they return through the smuggling paths.\"\n\nThe border between Colombia and Venezuela stretches over hundreds of miles through jungle territory controlled by a myriad of armed groups who oversee the hundreds of informal pathways for smuggling Colombian drugs and Venezuelan contraband as well as people. Experts doubt Colombia could impose effective immigration controls in such a lawless zone.\n\n\"The borders are unstable at the moment due to both the humanitarian situation and to the number of criminal and violent actors,\" said Ivan Briscoe, Bogota-based Latin America director with the International Crisis Group. \"I do not think that Colombia has either the resources or experience to be able to manage a large outflow of migrants on its own.\"\n\nSuggesting a heightened sense of urgency on the government's part, Colombian president Juan Manuel Santos visited Cucuta on February 9th to announce new actions addressing the refugee crisis. Santos suspended registry for Colombian border entry cards and deployed 3,000 military and police personnel to boost border security, noting that Colombia was spending millions of dollars to support the migrants.\n\n\"Colombia has never lived through a situation like what we have today,\" Santos said in a televised address before reporters and local authorities gathered to receive him in Cucuta.\n\nThe same day, Brazil's defense minister, visiting his own country's Venezuelan border, echoed Santos' remarks, deploying the military to the border and ordering the relocation of tens of thousands of migrants from the border zone. On February 12th, Brazil's president, Michel Temer, visited the border city of Boa Vista, where a growing number of Venezuelan refugees are straining local resources.\n\n\"Obviously it's a reflection of the huge concern in these countries,\" said Briscoe with the Crisis Group. \"It's a complex humanitarian emergency. International support is crucial.\"\n\nBeyond the immediate humanitarian concerns, Colombia faces long-term threats of destabilization as masses of Venezuelans move into the country without proper reception, health care, or social services, Briscoe said.\n\nBoth Colombia and Brazil will hold presidential elections this year, and neither incumbent will contest them. | body | In a cramped hospital near Colombia's border with Venezuela, migrants fill stretchers bearing the wounds of the deteriorating nation they left behind. An 18-year-old woman rubbed her swollen belly after fleeing with her infant daughter when the wounds from her C-section began to ooze pus. A young man whose femur had torn through his skin in a motorcycle crash needed antibiotics for an infection. An elderly retiree with a swollen foot arrived after taking a 20-hour bus ride from Caracas because doctors there told his family the only treatment they could offer was amputation — without anesthesia or antibiotics. "If you want to sign, sign. But we are not responsible for the life of your father," Teresa Tobar, 36, quoted the doctors in Venezuela as telling her when they handed over the papers to authorize her father's surgery. As Venezuela's economic crisis worsens, rising numbers are fleeing in a burgeoning refugee crisis that is drawing alarm across Latin America. Independent groups estimate that as many as 3 million to 4 million Venezuelans have abandoned their homeland in recent years, with several hundred thousand departing in 2017 alone. Many of those migrants are arriving by foot in Colombia and landing in the Andean nation's emergency rooms with urgent medical conditions that Venezuelan hospitals can no longer treat. According to health officials, Venezuelans made nearly 25,000 visits to Colombian ERs last year, up from just 1,500 in 2015. At hospitals in border cities like Cucuta, patients are packed side by side on stretchers that spill into hallways, not much unlike the deplorable conditions they fled back home. Authorities project that Venezuelan admissions to Colombian hospitals could double in 2018 and say the nation's already overstretched public health system is unprepared to handle the sudden swell. "We are not in a position to assume the cost of the comprehensive care for the migrants arriving," said Julio Saenz, an adviser on migrant affairs to Colombia's Health Ministry. "That's a very big concern." The Venezuelans are fleeing an increasingly authoritarian government that has been unable to halt skyrocketing inflation that renders wages nearly worthless and forces millions to go hungry. In Cucuta, ground zero for an exodus that has spread across Latin America, migrants say their nation's rapidly deteriorating health system is also forcing them to leave as everything from simple antibiotics to critical chemotherapy drugs become hard to find or impossible to afford. "I said to myself, 'I have nowhere else to go,'" recalled Grecia Sabala, a 32-year-old mother who journeyed to Colombia seeking treatment for cervical cancer after doctors in Venezuela were unable to provide chemotherapy and her city's only radiation machine broke. "I'm going to the border to look for a cure." Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro has refused to allow humanitarian aid to enter the struggling nation, denying there is a crisis and contending that permitting international relief could pave the way for foreign intervention. But what little data officials have released indicates Venezuelans are facing mounting health challenges. Cases of infant and maternal mortality have risen sharply and long-eradicated maladies like diphtheria have re-emerged. At least one Venezuelan child has died in Colombia from malnutrition, seeking treatment too late, and officials say many others are arriving dangerously underweight. Health officials are particularly concerned about the spread of infectious diseases. Authorities confirmed numerous cases of malaria, tuberculosis and HIV among Venezuelan migrants last year. "It's increasing the numbers of some illnesses that we had under control," Saenz said. By law, Colombia's hospitals are required to treat any person, local or foreign, who shows up at an emergency room. But many Venezuelans are arriving with chronic conditions like cancer and diabetes that require expensive, continuing care. Health institutions in Colombia are not required to provide those treatments. "We handle the emergency room care, but beyond that there is no more we can do," said Juan Ramirez, director of the Erasmo Meoz Hospital in Cucuta. Cucuta health officials estimate the cost of caring for Venezuelan migrants will climb millions of dollars this year. Most of that cost ends up being funded by cash-strapped local institutions that say they need the help of the central government and international community. Aside from providing health care, border cities are also coping with an array of public safety issues, like a rise in prostitution and groups of men, women and children sleeping on the streets. There is also a widespread perception of worsening crime, though police in Cucuta say the incidents remain relatively isolated. President Juan Manuel Santos is under pressure to declare a social emergency, freeing up additional resources, and the top U.S. Agency for International Development official for Latin America recently visited Cucuta to evaluate how the Trump administration can help its close ally respond to the growing crisis. "At some point, it's going to be unpayable," said Juan Alberto Bitar, head of the health agency overseeing Cucuta. Colombia's health ministry is planning to deploy a half dozen mobile units near the border to treat minor conditions. A Colombia Red Cross medical tent stationed at the foot of the Simon Bolivar International Bridge where about 35,000 Venezuelans enter the country each day — most for short stays to find food or work — already treats several hundred each week. Workers said many of the patients arrive after fainting on the journey because they had nothing to eat. Michel Briceno, the young new mother who fled to Colombia after the incision from her C-section became infected, said she knew she had to leave after learning that several other women at the same hospital in Venezuela had also gotten ill and died. When her pelvis began to swell, she and her husband gathered their toddler son and newborn daughter and boarded a small bus for a 12-hour ride into Colombia with excruciating pain she rated a nine on a scale of 10. Seated on a hospital bed as her infant squirmed beside her, Briceno said she had no doubt about what the outcome might have been if she stayed in Venezuela. "I would have died," she said. | body | Severe violations of the right to health, as well as difficulties accessing food and other basic services, are putting thousands of people’s lives at risk in Venezuela and fueling a regional forced migration crisis, Amnesty International said today on the launch of its digital platform Emergency Exit. “People in Venezuela are fleeing an agonizing situation that has transformed treatable health conditions into matters of life and death. Basic health services have collapsed and finding essential medicine is a constant struggle, leaving thousands with no choice but to seek health care abroad,” said Erika Guevara-Rosas, director of Amnesty International in the Americas. “Inaction is not an option. The international community and the Venezuelan State must start cooperating immediately to defuse this explosive crisis.” Local human rights organizations have said that Venezuela is suffering from an 80% to 90% shortage in medicine supplies; half of the nation’s hospitals are not functioning; and there has been a 50% drop in the number of medical staff at the public centers that provide 90% of health services. The Venezuelan government has denied the existence of food and health crises and rejected offers of aid and cooperation from the international community. Amnesty International calls on the Venezuelan State to work with the international community to ensure that financial and technical resources are available to guarantee timely access to necessary and quality health care for all. Throughout 2018, Amnesty International will publish the stories of people from Venezuela seeking protection in other countries in the Americas, including pregnant women and people with chronic illnesses who left Venezuela in search of essential health care, on the digital platform www.amnistiaonline.org/SalidadeEmergencia Colombian immigration authorities estimate that the number of people from Venezuela in the country rose to 550,000 last year. Colombian health services provided urgent treatment for more than 24,000 Venezuelans in 2017, according to Colombia’s Ministry of Health. Hospitals in the border cities of Maicao and Cúcuta treated two to three times as many patients from Venezuela in 2017 as they did the previous year. Hundreds of pregnant women are among those crossing into Colombia to access necessary health care, which is sorely lacking in Venezuela today. From 2015 to 2016, the last years with official information available, maternal mortality in Venezuela rose by more than 65% while infant mortality increased by more than 30%. “The Venezuelan government cannot keep ignoring this desperate situation. Doing so would condemn the region to one of the worst refugee crises it has ever seen.” Source: https://www.amnesty.org/en/latest/news/2018/03/venezuela-unattended-health-rights-crisis-is-forcing-thousands-to-flee/ |

"body": "Severe violations of the right to health, as well as difficulties accessing food and other basic services, are putting thousands of people’s lives at risk in Venezuela and fueling a regional forced migration crisis, Amnesty International said today on the launch of its digital platform Emergency Exit.\n\n“People in Venezuela are fleeing an agonizing situation that has transformed treatable health conditions into matters of life and death. Basic health services have collapsed and finding essential medicine is a constant struggle, leaving thousands with no choice but to seek health care abroad,” said Erika Guevara-Rosas, director of Amnesty International in the Americas.\n\n“Inaction is not an option. The international community and the Venezuelan State must start cooperating immediately to defuse this explosive crisis.”\n\nLocal human rights organizations have said that Venezuela is suffering from an 80% to 90% shortage in medicine supplies; half of the nation’s hospitals are not functioning; and there has been a 50% drop in the number of medical staff at the public centers that provide 90% of health services.\n\nThe Venezuelan government has denied the existence of food and health crises and rejected offers of aid and cooperation from the international community.\n\n\n\nAmnesty International calls on the Venezuelan State to work with the international community to ensure that financial and technical resources are available to guarantee timely access to necessary and quality health care for all.\n\nThroughout 2018, Amnesty International will publish the stories of people from Venezuela seeking protection in other countries in the Americas, including pregnant women and people with chronic illnesses who left Venezuela in search of essential health care, on the digital platform www.amnistiaonline.org/SalidadeEmergencia\n\nColombian immigration authorities estimate that the number of people from Venezuela in the country rose to 550,000 last year.\n\n\n\nColombian health services provided urgent treatment for more than 24,000 Venezuelans in 2017, according to Colombia’s Ministry of Health. Hospitals in the border cities of Maicao and Cúcuta treated two to three times as many patients from Venezuela in 2017 as they did the previous year.\n\nHundreds of pregnant women are among those crossing into Colombia to access necessary health care, which is sorely lacking in Venezuela today. From 2015 to 2016, the last years with official information available, maternal mortality in Venezuela rose by more than 65% while infant mortality increased by more than 30%.\n\n\n\n“The Venezuelan government cannot keep ignoring this desperate situation. Doing so would condemn the region to one of the worst refugee crises it has ever seen.”\n\nSource: https://www.amnesty.org/en/latest/news/2018/03/venezuela-unattended-health-rights-crisis-is-forcing-thousands-to-flee/",

| body | They live in RVs and drive from one low-wage job to another This article is reprinted by permission from NextAvenue.org. It is part of a partnership between Next Avenue and Chasing the Dream, a public media initiative on poverty and opportunity. In her powerful new book, “Nomadland,” award-winning journalist Jessica Bruder reveals the dark, depressing and sometimes physically painful life of a tribe of men and women in their 50s and 60s who are — as the subtitle says — “surviving America in the twenty-first century.” Not quite homeless, they are “houseless,” living in secondhand RVs, trailers and vans and driving from one location to another to pick up seasonal low-wage jobs, if they can get them, with little or no benefits. The “workamper” jobs range from helping harvest sugar beets to flipping burgers at baseball spring training games to Amazon’s AMZN, +1.74% “CamperForce,” seasonal employees who can walk the equivalent of 15 miles a day during Christmas season pulling items off warehouse shelves and then returning to frigid campgrounds at night. Living on less than $1,000 a month, in certain cases, some have no hot showers. As Bruder writes, these are “people who never imagined being nomads.” Many saw their savings wiped out during the Great Recession or were foreclosure victims and, writes Bruder, “felt they’d spent too long losing a rigged game.” Some were laid off from high-paying professional jobs. Few have chosen this life. Few think they can find a way out of it. They’re downwardly mobile older Americans in mobile homes. During her three years doing research for the book, conducting hundreds of interviews and traversing 15,000 miles, Bruder even tried living the difficult nomad life; she lasted one workweek. I recently interviewed Bruder to learn more about the lives in Nomadland and what the future holds for these people: Next Avenue: How did you come to write “Nomadland?” Jessica Bruder: It grew out of a story I wrote for Harper’s in 2014. I had read a story in Mother Jones and it mentioned a woman working in a warehouse who was living in an RV and said she couldn’t afford to retire. I went ‘Goodness!’ Call me naive, but when I see an RV, I assume it’s owned by one of the last of great pensioners enjoying retirement and going to see the National Parks. I regarded it as a life of luxury and a neat retirement choice. After all, they call them ‘recreational’ vehicles. I started doing some research and learned there was a whole spectrum of thousands of employers hiring people in similar situations — in oil fields, harvesting sugar beets and helping out at amusement parks. These are not easy jobs or the kind typically associated with people in older stages. But nobody had been looking at it in context of the retirement crisis in the wake of the Great Recession. And a lot of the recruiting materials for these jobs made them look like summer camps. Some for Amazon’s CamperForce said if you come, you’ll make friends. It felt so strange to me, so I started talking to RV’ers outside Amazon warehouses in Nevada and Kansas. Some lost their savings; some thought they would retire on the equity in their homes, but their homes dropped in value dramatically, while the cost of traditional housing kept going up. A lot of them were living hand to mouth; it was hard for them to save for tomorrow. What else were the people like who you met in “Nomadland?” The people I met on the road were so creative and resilient and I spent time learning from them. Following them was the most exciting opportunity I’ve ever had. Why do you think so many older people are living and working this way? I think it has been the pretty bad economic times. We saw in the 1980s a shift from pensions to 401(k)s; that was a raw deal for workers. These retirement plans were marketed as an instrument of financial freedom, but they were really transferring risk from the shoulder of the employers to the backs of the workers. I met a lot of older women. The gender wage gap has meant women have lower lifetime earnings than men; they spend more time out of the workforce doing unpaid labor, raising families or caring for parents. Do you have any sense about whether the numbers of people in “Nomadland” are growing and why? Anecdotally. Amazon’s CamperForce says it’s getting more and more applications. And when I track Facebook FB, +1.58% groups of these people, they’re all exploding. There are probably in the tens of thousands of people in Nomadland, and that’s being conservative. Why do Nomads live like this? We live in a culture where if your number didn’t come up, you’re a bad person, you’re lazy, you should be ashamed of yourself. It eats away at people. It makes them more exploitable. What are the challenges they face? I talked to one couple, Barb and Chuck. He had been head of product development at McDonald’s MCD, +1.81% before he retired. He lost his nest egg in the 2008 crash and Barb did, too. One time, Barb and Chuck were standing at the gas station to get $175 worth of gas and the horror hit them that their account had $6 in it. The gas station gentleman said ‘Give me your name and driver’s license and if you write a check, I will wait to cash it.’ He waited two whole weeks before he deposited it. These jobs can be rough physically, right? I know someone in his 70s who walked 15 miles on a concrete floor, sometimes for 10 hours. Your feet can get messed up, you can get repetitive stress injury and a tendon condition. The Nomads talked to me about soaking their feet in salt baths at night and being too tired to go out. When I went to the sugar beet harvest, it was 12 hours a day in the cold, shoveling. Oh my God, my body hurt! And I was 37! Tell me about Amazon’s CamperForce program, which hires thousands of Nomads. It began in 2008, within months after the housing collapse. Amazon contracts with an RV park and pays the CamperForce to do warehouse work loading and packing and order fulfillment. From the outside looking in, you’d say: ‘Why would you want older people doing this? The jobs seem suited to younger bodies.’ But so many times, the recruiters in the published materials talk about the older people’s work ethic and the maturity of the workforce and their ‘life experience,’ which is a code word for ‘Hey, you’re old.’ When it comes to retirement, 60s are the new 50s You write that sometimes the Nomads are exploited. How? I filed a Freedom of Information Act request with the Forest Service and learned that some of their workers aren’t getting paid for all their hours. They weren’t allowed to invoice. Some of the Nomads had to work alongside robots, such as in the Amazon warehouses. How was that? The robots were making them bonkers. This is isolating work and there’s one scene in the book where a robot kept bringing a woman in her 70s the same thing to count. What needs to change to prevent people from having to become Nomads or to help them live better if they are? For one thing, Amazon should pay its workers more and give them better working conditions. It’s laughable that the workers get a 15-minute break when they have to spend it walking to the break room. It’s completely insane. Nomads need a voice, but at the same time, it’s extremely unlikely that they’ll organize for better working conditions because they’re vulnerable and always on the move. | body | Cryptocurrency buyers have endured a tough week as reviews that Japanese regulators are cracking down on native exchanges following a large heist at CoinCheck – an unregistered native alternate – and the SEC is demanding that US-based cryptocurrency exchanges register with the company, despatched digital forex costs reeling, finally pushing bitcoin to a multiweek low on Friday under $9,000. However on this planet of blockchain know-how, the place even crypto skeptics like Jamie Dimon (who now regrets calling BTC a fraud) and Ray Dalio see a promising future, it was actually the perfect of instances. Earlier this week, the city of South Burlington, Vermont grew to become the primary city within the US to file an actual property transaction by registering the deed switch on a blockchain-based system. And in one other triumph, the primary nationwide election to be tracked and verified utilizing blockchain know-how unfolded in Sierra Leone this week. The votes are nonetheless being tallied, however blockchain voting startup Agora is supervising the primary beta take a look at of its vote-monitoring blockchain tech, as Coindesk reported. As voters lined as much as solid votes in what had been a heated marketing campaign between 16 candidates, unbeknownst to them, blockchain voting startup Agora was serving to hold monitor of all of it, and thru its proprietary distributed ledger, offering unprecedented perception into the method. In what, by all accounts, seems to be a world’s first for the rising know-how, Agora used a personal, permissioned blockchain – one impressed by the know-how that backs bitcoin and different cryptocurrencies – to supervise the outcomes of a nationwide election in actual time. It then relayed the info to people entrusted to supervise and confirm the nation’s democratic course of. In fact, the know-how remains to be very rudimentary, and required Agora staff to bodily confirm paper ballots earlier than precisely coming into their content material into the corporate’s blockchain database. The corporate’s tech – which it calls “skipchain” – is what’s often called a “permissioned” blockchain – the place solely a number of the information being entered into the database is seen to the general public (on this case, the names and private data of the voters will stay hidden, whereas the outcomes of the vote and all non-personal related metadata needs to be accessible for all to see). As this text was being accomplished, Agora, a Switzerland-based basis, was within the means of manually counting the votes and logging them on a blockchain. “Voters full their votes on paper ballots after which our staff with neutral observers register them on the blockchain,” defined Lukasiewicz, who formally joined the corporate in January after first becoming a member of as an advisor. Stepping again, although, not solely is that this the primary time blockchain has been carried out in a nationwide election, it is also the primary dwell implementation for Agora’s stack of blockchain companies – what the corporate calls “skipchain” know-how, designed to achieve consensus with every node solely seeing a part of the blockchain. In some respects, Sierra Leone had a number of benefits that made Agora’s beta testing possible. As an illustration, because the finish of its civil conflict in 2002, the nation has performed plenty of largely “free and honest” elections. However this yr’s vote was additionally fraught with problems which can be nonetheless being labored out. A number of episodes of political violence preceded the poll, and already, earlier than the official vote tally has even been launched, two opposition events are expressing “grave issues” in regards to the equity of this yr’s vote, per Africa Information. The Coalition for Change and Nationwide Grand Coalition informed AN that their brokers have been evicted from some polling stations when the counting of votes began… However in its preliminary report, the Financial Neighborhood of West African States, or ECOWAS, famous that whereas the election was largely peaceable, free and honest, there have been some points, together with the heavy presence of safety at polling stations that reportedly intimidated some reporters. "body": "Cryptocurrency buyers have endured a tough week as reviews that Japanese regulators are cracking down on native exchanges following a large heist at CoinCheck – an unregistered native alternate – and the SEC is demanding that US-based cryptocurrency exchanges register with the company, despatched digital forex costs reeling, finally pushing bitcoin to a multiweek low on Friday under $9,000.\n\n\n\nHowever on this planet of blockchain know-how, the place even crypto skeptics like Jamie Dimon (who now regrets calling BTC a fraud) and Ray Dalio see a promising future, it was actually the perfect of instances. Earlier this week, the city of South Burlington, Vermont grew to become the primary city within the US to file an actual property transaction by registering the deed switch on a blockchain-based system.\n\n\n\nAnd in one other triumph, the primary nationwide election to be tracked and verified utilizing blockchain know-how unfolded in Sierra Leone this week. The votes are nonetheless being tallied, however blockchain voting startup Agora is supervising the primary beta take a look at of its vote-monitoring blockchain tech, as Coindesk reported.\n\nAs voters lined as much as solid votes in what had been a heated marketing campaign between 16 candidates, unbeknownst to them, blockchain voting startup Agora was serving to hold monitor of all of it, and thru its proprietary distributed ledger, offering unprecedented perception into the method.\n\nIn what, by all accounts, seems to be a world’s first for the rising know-how, Agora used a personal, permissioned blockchain – one impressed by the know-how that backs bitcoin and different cryptocurrencies – to supervise the outcomes of a nationwide election in actual time. It then relayed the info to people entrusted to supervise and confirm the nation’s democratic course of.\n\nIn fact, the know-how remains to be very rudimentary, and required Agora staff to bodily confirm paper ballots earlier than precisely coming into their content material into the corporate’s blockchain database.\n\nThe corporate’s tech – which it calls “skipchain” – is what’s often called a “permissioned” blockchain – the place solely a number of the information being entered into the database is seen to the general public (on this case, the names and private data of the voters will stay hidden, whereas the outcomes of the vote and all non-personal related metadata needs to be accessible for all to see).\n\nAs this text was being accomplished, Agora, a Switzerland-based basis, was within the means of manually counting the votes and logging them on a blockchain.\n\n“Voters full their votes on paper ballots after which our staff with neutral observers register them on the blockchain,” defined Lukasiewicz, who formally joined the corporate in January after first becoming a member of as an advisor.\n\nStepping again, although, not solely is that this the primary time blockchain has been carried out in a nationwide election, it is also the primary dwell implementation for Agora’s stack of blockchain companies – what the corporate calls “skipchain” know-how, designed to achieve consensus with every node solely seeing a part of the blockchain.\n\nIn some respects, Sierra Leone had a number of benefits that made Agora’s beta testing possible. As an illustration, because the finish of its civil conflict in 2002, the nation has performed plenty of largely “free and honest” elections. However this yr’s vote was additionally fraught with problems which can be nonetheless being labored out. | body | Howdy everyone, I've been putting ideas and words on paper, maybe to write a book, a blog or something else.... I really don't know to be honest. But by looking at others around me, I feel compelled and the needs to help them to process their life somehow differently or with different thinking tools. I'm far to be a writer, in fact I hate it and I'm not good at it, but I think my message will be useful for them... I'm what most people will consider successful in live and I think that I could help other to do the same! So if you could read what I put together and tell me what you think would be very appreciated. It's not the best english and/or composition but I think the idea (or part of it) is there! Chapter 1 - introduction Do you know what handcuffs feel like? Your body's constricted, uncomfortable, and it's difficult to move. Handcuffs are created to make you powerless and easily led. In the corporate world, they're called Golden Handcuffs and they're what keeps you shackled to a job. These cuffs are golden because they usually show-up as attractive, beneficial, and potentially lucrative. But are they really? For a lot of North Americans, it means a good paying jobs, with benefits like health insurances, company stocks, bonuses, pension or retirement plans like the 401K, sick days and two weeks of vacation. It might sound nice and dandy for a young professional like you, who is fresh out of the near decade and half of intensive brainwashing and indoctrination (aka school and/or higher education), but usually, about twenty years later, you might start to realize that you're trapped in something that isn't as nice and dandy as initially imagined. After thinking about it, getting a good job with benefits is all your parents and teachers pushed and told you to do. Usually, at the beginning of their careers, those young professionals are eager to learn the best ways theirs generation could take control, influence their workplace culture and start performing at the highest levels. They want to get noticed, create impact and at the same time discover how to start generating more income and accelerate their advancement within the corporate world by climbing the corporate ladder. Later on, they'll slowly but surely be locking themselves and their future in something that won't fit their needs anymore. To achieve their goals and over the years, they'll be "flipping" jobs like some do with houses, and try to get better positions by accepting bigger and shinier golden handcuffs. They'll slowly be entrenching themselves in what they "currently" think is the best job for them at the moment, without factoring that vision through a "time filter". They'll rush toward that goal heads down for too long just to wakeup in the future and realize that: What the hell happened? They'll be looking at what they want to be from their current position and not from an potential future position where things will definitively be different. They'll forget to reevaluate their destinations and revalidate their goals on a constant basis and along the way. For instance, in the past, people used to move to California to work for tech companies. Now 15 to 20 years later, the same group of people are leaving the state of California faster than ever because for a lot of them, they can't afford the cost of living. They've invested so much of their time and energy to create a life for themselves but the cost of living is currently preventing them to really enjoy their life. So, what they wanted to be and do 15 to 20 years ago might actually not be achievable anymore. If they haven't stay aware of the surrounding because they were wearing the big and large blinders caused by the golden handcuffs then, for sure they won't be able to afford retiring in California either. So, if they haven't planned correctly, they might have trapped themselves in a situation where they can no longer leave the over-prices state of California because they're now in an unstoppable vicious circle. By getting bigger and shinier golden handcuffs, they'll also be wearing bigger and larger blinders, that will prevent them to see and process the world with all the opportunities, life will throw at them. And that, is not even factoring the fact that they might get fired or lose their job! These days, contrarily to 30 or 40 years ago, life is changing, progressing or regressing relatively fast. We forgot that time which is a resource like anything else we consume, cannot be replenished. Our life is directly connected with technology and when technology changes, then our life is also changing but, not always for the best. We aren't noticing it immediately, but either we like it or not, our life and careers are directly linked with the ever changing technology. Something that we enjoy right now, might not be enjoyable in the future. So what would happen then if, 10 to 15 years later, you would suddenly woke up with 2 kids, 1 large mortgage, 2 cars, several bad debts and realize that, you're stuck in a job or in a position that you really hate but can't immediately leave because you've no other sources of income? If you have been wearing the large and wide blinders because you were solely focusing on your golden handcuffs, then you truly positioned yourself between the rock and a hard place. But if you've been trying to stay aware of your life surrounding, and kept your vision up to date then, you might have made some choices and investments that are going to help you to break free from the golden handcuffs, thus changing your life for something better. Well, this is what this book will talk about, which is, keeping yourself aware of your life surrounding by starting early at rethinking your future and by starting to invest time, money and energy early on, to become an entrepreneur and financially free. Then, by doing so, you'll have more aces in your sleeve to help you break free from the golden handcuffs that might enslave you and your family for the worse and in an unpredictable future. Chapter 2 - thinking out of the box The definition of insanity, is, doing the exact same fucking thing over and over again, expecting shit to change. That. Is. Crazy." - Vaas Montenegro Starting to think out of the box at an early age, stage or ASAP, could make all the differences in the world. But in order to get it to work, you've to start doing something different, to get different results. You need to stop doing what everyone else is doing like sheeple because, to be honest, most of the people in the society are sheeple. Some have fallen under the hypnotic spell of the TV talking-heads, "experts", and religious leaders whom they worship as authority figures. Unaccustomed to thinking for themselves, no amount of truth can sway them from their preconceived prejudices and conditioned reactions. They will even deny that which they see with their own eyes. Individuals who have been so conditioned can only parrot opinions that have been implanted in their minds by outside suggestion. In effect, millions of peoples minds have been reduced to the intellectual level of a CD player, spinning an implanted disc designed by outside forces of which the intended target has no awareness. They soon become victims of a psychological affliction known as "the sheeple effect." Those people are doomed to reproduce history and failures that brought down families, careers, life and entire societies for decades or even centuries. The only way to succeed is to look where those sheeple are heading and then, go to the total opposite way! You've to know: what they eat, what they read, what they're watching, what they do and then, just not do any of it! "Sheeplehood" is a necessary sociological survival trait and an inborn instinct. Without it, humans may not have achieved even the smallest steps toward civilization. However, as with most natural phenomena, this tendency can be manipulated and used for harmful purposes. The same sheeple effect that enables the masses of a justly governed society to progress toward positive, constructive ends, can just as readily self-sabotage or self-destruct. Sheeple will not only resist efforts to change their misguided beliefs with all of their mental energy; they will usually attack anyone who dares to question their myths. Sheeple are absolutely terrified at the thought of being labeled as an "extremist", "conspiracy theorist", "racist", or being ostracized for thinking independently. Ironically, the very same sheeple who instinctively ridicule outside of the box "theories", are always the first ones to blindly swallow the most ridiculous theories imaginable when their masters present them. Thinking outside of the box is not just simply a mindset, but also a lifestyle. It’s an art and it’s where your creativity flourishes, where you will excel most because that is when you figure out what you love to do, when you are constantly thinking about how to make it greater than it already is. When you go to sleep and wake up thinking about it, you have found exactly what you are looking for. Since I'm a young kid, I've spent a great deal of time thinking about a lot of ideas, concepts and projects. I could spend hours sit on a couch with a piece of paper and a pencil trying to figure something out "new". Then, my mom would be asking me: "What are you doing? You've been looking at that piece of paper for hours!" I was just thinking about getting something done but, differently! Sometimes, we can get pretty well stuck in our ways. We just go through the motions, doing what we need to but no more. We’re scared to deviate from the set route and make our own paths. When that is happening, this is when we really need to start to pay close attention and be aware of our life surrounding because we're in the process of turning ourselves into a sheeple. In modern society, our basic way of thinking has been stripped from us, we have been fashioned into robots and made to memorize things that we hate so that we can be shaped into the perfect employee. When you really think about it, the world is forcing you into the box. Society fears your individualism and tries to pigeonhole you into conventional, conformist thought so that you are satisfied by your lack of purpose. Becoming a successful entrepreneur is easier if you have a certain skillset which includes passion, drive, and innovativeness. Thinking outside the box is crucial, because there’s nothing new under the sun unless you happen to be an entrepreneur which is something crucial if you ever want to break free from the golden handcuffs! Why compete in the market when you can build your own industry, providing consumers with something they need or want but never had before? The world is looking for pioneers, innovators and people who plan on turning it on its axis. They are looking for people who can think outside of the box because that’s where true legends and leaders are born. Remember that thinking outside of the box gives you an edge over everyone else because you are simply a problem solver. You are looking for voids in this world, approaching things in innovative ways and finding variables to it through your creativity. Thinking outside of the box starts with you and your creativity. It is what separates you from the rest of the crowd. To have the freedom to think on your own as well as having the ability to apply it to what you're working on is worth more than any amount of money in this world. Thinking outside the box is more than just a business cliché. It means approaching problems in new, innovative ways; conceptualizing problems differently; and understanding your position in relation to any particular situation in a way you’d never thought of before. We’re told to “think outside the box” all the time, but how exactly do we do that? First, it's important to get away from all the typical routines in order to foster creativity. The idea of changing it up is a common one amongst successful and creative thinkers. First, you've to change your environment, your space or your immediate surrounding. Take a walk on a new street, go to the gym to a new location, use a different bench at the park or reorganize your working area. That will give you a chance to look and perceive things from a different angle. Secondly, do a lot of brainstorming. Throwing out tons of different ideas, especially ideas that might seem slightly off-the-wall can be a great idea to pick out. Brainstorming helps to open up your thinking so that you aren't stuck in the same old thought patterns. Do not limit yourself when you're brainstorming. This is the time when all ideas are welcome, no matter how silly or unworkable they sound. If you start limiting yourself during this stage of the thinking game, you aren't going to progress very far. You've to aim for quantity, not quality. Also try to include others when you brainstorm. It is a great way to get different visions, angles and perspectives of the same subject really fast. Thirdly, search for random inspiration. You need to trigger your brain to make connections it normally wouldn't make. To do that, look for inspiration that seems entirely unrelated to the problem by looking at random pictures online, shuffle the pages of a random illustrated book, watch a movie that you would normally not want to see, try a new hobby, meet new people, talk to strangers at the bar or study another industry than you are working in. CHAPTER 3 - GET THE MOMENTUM GOING "Just fucking do it! Don't analyze, don't spreadsheet and just focus on the few, not the many and the money will follow." Daniel Pena A fear of taking action is a fear of failure. # |
