body![pill.jpeg](https://steemitimages.com/DQmbEsrYtne9bcBXKKm68TR3x7xM1rRjLXgKRtH2ve6ooAe/pill.jpeg) A new study has detailed how a compound called EP055 binds to sperm proteins to significantly slow the overall mobility of the sperm without affecting hormones, making EP055 a potential "male pill" without side effects. "Simply put, the compound turns-off the sperm's ability to swim, significantly limiting fertilization capabilities," said lead investigator Michael O'Rand from the University of North Carolina. "This makes EP055 an ideal candidate for non-hormonal male contraception." Currently, condoms and surgical vasectomy are the only safe forms of birth control currently available for men. There are hormonal drugs in clinical trials that target the production of sperm, but these affect the natural hormones in men much like female contraceptives affect hormones in women. During the study, thirty hours following a high-dose intravenous infusion of EP055 in male rhesus macaques, O'Rand and researchers in the Oregon National Primate Research Center at OHSU in Portland, Oregon, found no indication of normal sperm motility. Further, no physical side effects were observed. "At 18 days post-infusion, all macaques showed signs of complete recovery, suggesting that the EP055 compound is indeed reversible," said study co-investigator Mary Zelinski. O'Rand and Zelinski indicate that more work is needed before EP055 becomes available for human use. They and their teams have begun to test a pill form of the compound and will eventually conduct a mating trial of EP055's effectiveness against pregnancy.

body![brad.jpg](https://steemitimages.com/DQmf7Ke86Cz5PXtLjyzGFXbbhD6qNnQUX7tgCHMs9y3kYK8/brad.jpg) Dozens of countries add folic acid to flour to ensure that women receive the vitamin, which reduces the risk of babies being born with spina bifida. However, the United Kingdom has resisted calls to follow suit—and may have done so on the basis of flawed research, The Telegraph reports. Researchers examined a 1998 report that set a safe daily upper limit for folic acid consumption, and noticed that a statistical error had been made. When they reanalyzed the data correctly, the scientists found that there were no differences between people who exceeded the limit or remained within it. Writing today in Public Health Reviews, the researchers say that there is now no scientific reason for an upper limit and call on the United Kingdom and other countries to fortify flour with folic acid to reduce the incidence of spina bifida and related disorders

From our food to beauty rituals, turmeric is one of Ayurveda's most prized spice too. A storehouse of health benefits, consuming turmeric daily may also boost your memory and uplift your mood, says a new study. Curcumin, the principal curcuminoid of turmeric, has been previously been shown to have anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties. Experts have also suggested that one of the possible reasons why senior citizens in India have lower incidences of Alzheimer's disease performance is because of their regular intake of curcumin in turmeric. Their overall cognitive performance is relatively better too. "Exactly how curcumin exerts its effects is not certain, but it may be due to its ability to reduce brain inflammation, which has been linked to both Alzheimer's disease and major depression," said Gary Small, from the University of California, Los Angeles in the US. The study, published in the American Journal of Geriatric Psychiatry, examined 40 adults between the ages of 50 and 90 years who had mild memory complaints. For the study, they were randomly assigned to receive either a placebo or 90 milligrammes of curcumin twice daily for 18 months. The subjects were given standardised cognitive assessments at the start of the study and at six month intervals. The curcumin levels in the blood were monitored at the start of the study and after 18 months. Thirty of the volunteers underwent positron emission tomography, or PET scans, to determine the levels of amyloid and tau in their brains at the start of the study and after 18 months. The findings revealed that people who took curcumin experienced significant improvements in their memory and attention abilities, while the subjects who received placebo did not, Small said. People taking curcumin improved by 28 per cent over the 18 months in their memory tests. There were mild improvements in mood for people taking curcumin. The PET scans of their brain showed significantly less amyloid and tau signals in the amygdala and hypothalamus than those who took placebos. The amygdala and hypothalamus are regions of the brain that control several memory and emotional functions. "These results suggest that taking this relatively safe form of curcumin could provide meaningful cognitive benefits over the years," said Small. Haldi doodh or Turmeric milk is renowned as an age old remedy to to battle infections and strengthen Immunity. Ayurvedic expert Dr. Ashutosh Gautam, suggests five reasons to have the golden drink daily. 1. Having haldi doodh at night is anyway beneficial for health and it induces good sleep. When teamed with turmeric, it also acts as an anti-ageing tonic. 2. Turmeric milk fastens the recovery from an injury. Most people drink haldi doodh after a physical trauma, sickness or surgery to speed up the healing. 3. Turmeric has antiseptic, anti-inflammatory properties, anti-microbial, anti-allergic properties. 4. Having turmeric milk is also beneficial in treating joint and bone issues including arthritis and rheumatoid arthritis. 5. It also helps with fighting skin infections, disorders and allergies.

According to experts from Boston University in Massachusetts, U.S., the negative health effects from air pollution exposure are infertility, metabolic syndrome and polycystic ovary syndrome. The study claims to be the first to show that exposure to air pollution among teenage girls (ages 14-18) is linked to slightly increased chances of menstrual irregularity and longer time to achieve such regularity in high school and early adulthood. Air pollution can also damage your hair. Study author Shruthi Mahalingaiah said, “While exposure to air pollution have been linked to cardiovascular and pulmonary disease, this study suggests that there may be other systems, such as the reproductive endocrine system, which are also affected”. Here are the dangerous health effects of smog. The menstrual cycle is responsive to hormonal regulation and particulate matter of air pollution has demonstrated hormonal activity. The researchers used health and location data gathered in the Nurses’ Health Study 2 plus air pollution exposure metrics from the EPA air quality monitoring system to understand a participants’ exposure during a particular time window. They found exposure to air pollution in during high school was correlated with menstrual cycle irregularity. “Implications on human disease may come through reducing emissions on a global and individual level,” Mahalingaiah added. Smog can also cause skin problems. Did you know the effects of air pollution? The findings appear in the journal Human Reproduction. Here are some diet tips by Rujuta DIwekar to beat the ill effects of smog.

body![qmqqomc0v33fw7r6rp9r.jpg](https://steemitimages.com/DQmeEkb3VSy8RuLfryo3cC146Q5xDYnTrYjJd2hu4hdJWwL/qmqqomc0v33fw7r6rp9r.jpg) An emerging trend among pet owners is the practice of feeding dogs and cats raw meat. This idea is that we should put our domestic cats and dogs on diets that more closely approximate what they might eat in nature. New research from Europe shows the surprising degree to which germs and parasites can be found in commercial raw-meat products—posing potential health risks to both pets and their owners. An article in the Washington Post last year showed that grain-free, all-meat, and raw-food diets are one of the fastest growing sectors of the pet food market. It’s kinda like the Paleo Diet, but for pets. Trouble is, there’s no evidence that raw meat-based diets, or RMBDs, are any healthier than conventional dry or canned pet foods. And as new research published in Vet Record now shows, these diets could pose a threat to both animal and human health. A research team led by Paul Overgaauw at Utrecht University sought to learn if zoonotic bacteria and parasites, that is, bacteria and parasites that can leap between species, might be found in commercial RMBD products, and to what extent. To that end, they analyzed 35 commercial frozen RMBDs from eight different brands, all from the Netherlands. What they found was a bit disturbing. The bacterium E. coli was found in nearly a quarter of the products, and Salmonella in 20 percent of products. Both of these pathogens are dangerous to humans and pets. In addition, the researchers found various Listeria species in 43 percent of the products—bacteria that’s particularly dangerous to pregnant women, newborns, the elderly, and people with weakened immune systems. Four of the products had the Sarcocystis cruzi and Sarcocystis tenella parasites (the former of which is transmissible to humans). And finally, two of the products had Toxoplasma gondii—a brain parasite that’s known to alter the behavior of animals, possibly even humans. The researchers only tested products available in the Netherlands, which is a limitation to the study. These products will vary from country to country, each of which enforces different standards for meat, quality control, and so on. But studies done in other countries have reached similar conclusions (examples here, here, here, and here). People could come into contact with these pathogens by touching the infected pet, handling contaminated pet food and surfaces, or consuming human food that has been cross-contaminated. In addition to having owners educate themselves about the risks and engaging in good personal hygiene practices, the researchers advise that manufacturers include warnings and handling instructions on their products. “Despite the relatively low sample size of frozen products in our study, it is clear that commercial RMBDs may be contaminated with a variety of zoonotic bacterial and parasitic pathogens that may be a possible source of bacterial infections in pet animals and if transmitted pose a risk for human beings,” write the researchers in their study. “Cats and dogs that eat raw meat diets are also more likely to become infected with antibiotic-resistant bacteria than animals on conventional diets, which could pose a serious risk to both animal health and public health.” Jennifer Larsen, a clinical nutritionist at the University of California Veterinary School in Davis who wasn’t involved in the new study, agrees with the authors. “We do not recommend the feeding of raw animal products (meat, egg, bone, etc), and these types of diets are not allowed in the Veterinary Medical Teaching Hospital per our Infectious Disease Control Policy,” she told Gizmodo. “There are risks to both animal and human health as a result of this practice, with no proven benefits. This is backed by previous research that has found similar types of contamination in commercial raw pet diets, so the risks are well documented.” Larsen pointed to policies and position statements regarding this issue from the American Veterinary Medical Association, the California VMA, the Canadian VMA, and the FDA (here, here and here). Larsen is unconvinced by arguments stating that dogs and cats should be given foods that they’re more likely to eat in the wild. “The goals we want for our pets include longevity, usually not reproducing, ideal nutrition and good body condition, and avoidance of trauma and disease,” she said. “We do lots of things to protect them from what would happen in nature, such as starvation, disease, early and often reproduction, trauma from accidents and fights, and very short lifespan. We have the ability to do this thanks to scientific advancements in nutrition, medical therapy, and preventative veterinary care (neutering, vaccines), as well as the use of leashes and fences and moving them indoors.” Importantly—and as Larsen points out—dogs and cats are not “natural.” We created them for our own purposes, using them for hunting partners, companionship, farm work, and so on. “Since they essentially evolved on human garbage and have excelled at this scavenger lifestyle—and most dogs worldwide still live this way—it is not realistic to imagine them as wolves,” said Larsen. “Cats are closer to their undomesticated state, but we still want them to live long lives and not transmit diseases to us when they sleep in our beds and walk on our kitchen countertops!” Debbie Phillips-Donaldson, editor-in-chief of the Petfood Industry/Petfood Forum (a business-to-business publication with an audience of pet food professionals around the world, including people who make and market pet food), says her organization doesn’t advise pet owners on what they should feed their pets, but she did point us to a study by scientists from South Korea who found that “eating homemade raw dog food for more than a year correlated to different microbes thriving in dogs’ intestines compared to the guts of dogs fed store-bought dry kibble.” “I will say this,” Phillips-Donaldson told Gizmodo. “Veterinary and regulatory experts do tend to warn about the risks to humans of feeding raw pet food, so many, if not most, companies offering raw diets take great pains to not only make sure their products are safe but also educate consumers about proper handling practices.” She added that the raw pet food segment is one of the fastest growing, if still small—and despite the concerns. To ensure that our companion animals are safe, Larsen says pet owners should use cooked commercial diets (kibble and canned options are the most popular), or properly balanced, home-cooked diets for people with the money, space, and time resources to do so. “Either option is fine,” she told Gizmodo. Larsen also advised that pet owners use a service run by a board-certified veterinary nutritionist such as BalanceIT.com or contact a nutrition service at a veterinary school.

This idea is that we should put our domestic cats and dogs on diets that more closely approximate what they might eat in nature. New research from Europe shows the surprising degree to which germs and parasites can be found in commercial raw-meat products—posing potential health risks to both pets and their owners.\n\nAn article in the Washington Post last year showed that grain-free, all-meat, and raw-food diets are one of the fastest growing sectors of the pet food market. It’s kinda like the Paleo Diet, but for pets. Trouble is, there’s no evidence that raw meat-based diets, or RMBDs, are any healthier than conventional dry or canned pet foods. And as new research published in Vet Record now shows, these diets could pose a threat to both animal and human health.\n\nA research team led by Paul Overgaauw at Utrecht University sought to learn if zoonotic bacteria and parasites, that is, bacteria and parasites that can leap between species, might be found in commercial RMBD products, and to what extent. To that end, they analyzed 35 commercial frozen RMBDs from eight different brands, all from the Netherlands.\n\nWhat they found was a bit disturbing. The bacterium E. coli was found in nearly a quarter of the products, and Salmonella in 20 percent of products. Both of these pathogens are dangerous to humans and pets. body![unnamed.jpg](https://steemitimages.com/DQmWZSehLtL2sNrZ3apaFsGTSwGzRv9hW9TiQpK1nRgj9ZT/unnamed.jpg) US scientists say they have found a way to prevent between 200‚000 and 800‚000 new HIV infections in SA over the next 20 years. A team at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) has developed a "mini pill box" that stays in the stomach for a week‚ delivering a long-lasting dose of antiretroviral medication. By simulating the dynamics of HIV and patient drug-adherence patterns in SA‚ the MIT team — which published its research in the journal Nature Communications — showed that the invention could reduce therapeutic failures and prevent thousands of new HIV cases. "These slow-release dosage systems perform equal or better than the current daily doses for HIV treatment in preclinical models‚" said MIT gastroenterologist and biomedical engineer Giovanni Traverso. Nonadherence to medication regimens is a major challenge in the fight against HIV‚ and clinical trials have shown that only 30% of patients stick to their dosages. Traverso’s team developed a capsule that unfolds its six arms into a star-shaped structure in the stomach‚ making it too large to pass through the pylorus — the connection between the stomach and the small intestine. At the same time‚ it allows food to continue passing through the digestive system. The capsule contains polymers and other materials to allow drugs to diffuse out slowly over time‚ and each of its six arms can dispense a different drug. The MIT team investigated delivering the antiretrovirals dolutegravir‚ rilpivirine and cabotegravir for HIV prevention among noninfected patients and for viral suppression among those infected. Researchers tested the concentration profiles for each of the doses over time in a pig model‚ and measured the presence of each drug in the bloodstream in the week following ingestion. They are now working to scale up and validate results from preclinical models to translate the potential therapy to human patients.

While there are four strains of influenza circulating around, Sutter Health's Medical Director of Infection Control Dr. Jeffrey Silvers says that being vaccinated is still the best option. "There's a lot of confusing information being provided from multiple news sources that the flu shot has only been 10 percent effective," Silvers said in a statement. "But the data strongly suggests that vaccinated high risk patients are much less likely to be hospitalized," he added. The most predominant strain of influenza is H3N2, which has been getting a lot of attention because it is the most predominant strain. It has accounted for about 70 percent of patients, according to Alta Bates Summit officials. "It's not too late to get the flu shot and everyone six months or older can still get one," Silver said. Additionally, he said it's important to remember that it takes about two weeks for the vaccine to take effect.

Researchers who scoured the medical literature for evidence that calcium and vitamin D pills could help prevent bone fractures came up empty. Their analysis focused on adults older than age 50 who lived on their own (that is, not in a nursing home or other type of residential care facility). Fractures are a serious health concern for this population — previous studies have found that about 40% of women in this age group will wind up with at least one “major osteoporotic fracture” at some point in their lives, and that among adults who break a hip, 20% died within a year of their injury. The researchers, led by Dr. Jia-Guo Zhao of Tianjin Hospital in northeastern China, combed through clinical trials, systematic reviews and other reports published in the last decade, since late 2006. They identified 51,145 people who were included in studies assessing the role of calcium and/or vitamin D in preventing bone fractures. Their findings appear in Tuesday’s edition of the Journal of the American Medical Assn. Among the 14 trials that pitted calcium supplements against either a placebo or no treatment, there was no statistically significant relationship between use of the mineral (in pill form) and the risk of suffering a hip fracture. Nor was there any clear link between calcium supplements and fractures involving the spine or other bones. Even when the researchers accounted for each study participant’s gender, past history of bone fractures, the amount of calcium they consumed in their diets and the dose of the calcium pills they took (if they did), there was still no sign that supplements were helpful. An additional 17 trials examined the role of vitamin D, which helps the body absorb calcium. Once again, they found no statistically significant link between supplement use and hip fracture risk. Ditto for fractures in the spine and elsewhere. Upon drilling down to certain subgroups, they found that for people who started out with at least 20 nanograms of vitamin D per milliliter of blood, adding more vitamin D through supplements was associated with a greater risk of hip fractures. The same was true for people who took high doses of vitamin D supplements just once a year. Finally, there were 13 trials involving people who took a combined calcium-vitamin D supplement. As before, there was no statistically significant link between supplement use and the risk for any kind of fracture or combination of fractures. That held up even when accounting for gender, past fractures, supplement dose, dietary calcium or baseline blood levels of vitamin D. The researchers noted that thousands of people in this final group were participants in the Women’s Health Initiative, a long-term study sponsored by the National Heart, Lung and Blood Institute in the U.S. Earlier reports based on data gathered by the Women’s Health Initiative found that calcium and vitamin D supplements were associated with a lower risk of fractures, but only for women who took hormone therapy after menopause. To get a clearer picture of the direct link (if any) between supplements and fracture risk, Zhao and his colleagues opted not to include data from women on hormone therapy. It’s still possible that calcium and vitamin D supplements are useful for people who live in nursing homes or other residential facilities, the study authors wrote. Such people are more likely to have osteoporosis, due to a combination of poor diet, less sun exposure (which the body needs to synthesize vitamin D) and other factors. But for older adults who live on their own, they wrote, the results are clear: “These findings do not support the routine use of these supplements.”

A baby born in 2016 could expect to live 78.6 years, down from 78.7 in 2015, the National Center for Health Statistics said in its annual mortality report released last week. The change occurred not because older people are dying younger, but because of drug overdose deaths among people aged 25 to 54. And it occurred despite an overall decline in mortality. The death rate for all Americans decreased by 0.6 percent in 2016, but it increased among younger adults. Adults aged 25-34, 35-44 and 45–54 had the highest rates of drug overdose deaths among the 63,600 Americans who died of overdoses that year. Disparities were also seen across gender lines. Life expectancy for American men declined from 76.3 to 76.1 between 2015 and 2016, but stayed the same for women, 81.1. While the changes are slight, they are troubling to public-health officials, who note that America is the only developed nation to experience a decline in life expectancy in recent years. Moreover, it’s the first time since 1963 that life expectancy has decreased in two consecutive years. “Even though 1/10th of a year of decline in life expectancy doesn’t seem like a lot, it actually represents a lot of lives cut short,” said Bob Anderson, chief of the Mortality Statistics Branch of the National Center for Health Statistics.

body![Watch.jpg](https://steemitimages.com/DQmfA1P9etAhdvcNtYoVpHLCoBaBREihjXy85pereu1qEyk/Watch.jpg) LONDON: This Christmas, look out for your pooches before they start munching on festive treats, warn scientists who found that risk of chocolate poisoning in dogs significantly increases over the holiday season. Most people know that chocolate can be poisonous to dogs but may not know why. The toxic ingredient is a caffeine-like stimulant called theobromine that can lead to an upset stomach, a racing heartbeat, dehydration, seizures and in the most severe cases death. In a study published in the journal Vet Record, researchers from the University of Liverpool in the UK have used electronic health records from veterinary practices to analyse cases of chocolate ingestion in dogs. The findings reveal significant seasonal peaks of chocolate ingestion cases across the year, most notably at Christmas and to a lesser extent at Easter - as chocolate becomes more accessible within the home. In most cases the amount of chocolate consumed was quite small, with common festive culprits including selection boxes, chocolate cake, liqueurs, chocolate Santas and advent calendars. "Dogs love a chocolate treat and at Christmas there are plenty about. Sadly dogs can't eat chocolate safely so many of them end up making an unplanned visit to the vet, which can disrupt the celebrations," said Peter-John M Noble, veterinary researcher who led the study. "People should keep festive chocolates away from pets. If chocolate is consumed, owners should talk to their vet as soon as possible, and ideally be prepared to quantify the amount and type of chocolate consumed," Noble said. "Information on the chocolate packaging may help the vet take the best action. While many cases of chocolate-eating are not at toxic levels, where they are, it is better to see the vet quickly," he said. The research, which analysed 386 cases of chocolate ingestion in dogs from 229 UK veterinary practices between 2013 and 2017, also revealed some differences in the seasonal pattern of UK cases compared to other countries. Peaks in similar cases around Valentine's Day and Halloween that have previously been reported in the US and Germany were not found in the UK, which the researchers suggest could be due to different festival priorities. The study also found that chocolate ingestion was significantly less common in older dogs and that no specific breed is more at risk than others. "Big data is allowing us to perform wide scale studies of issues like chocolate exposure. This will help us to understand the influence of age, breed, season and geography on a wide range of different problems," said Noble.

It can lead to a host of other problems, from eczema to cracks and wrinkles. Whatever the reason for the dry skin – it could be hereditary or it could be caused by the cold weather – there are certain you should not do if you have a dry skin. Here are some of them. Take hot, long showers Hot water dries out the natural oils that moisturize the skin. In order to avoid over-drying the skin, taking a warm shower rather than a hot one and not remaining in the shower for long periods of time can help reduce dry skin. Use products with high alcohol content A small amount of alcohol in your products isn’t always a bad thing. However, if a product has high amounts of alcohol, it is very likely that it will dry out your skin. The takeaway here is to make sure to always research the ingredients before buying a new product. Excessive washing and hard scrubbing Washing too often with soap is a sure-fire way to get a chronically dry skin. Dry, irritated skin is much more susceptible to bacterial infection because excessive washing removes the protective layer of your skin. Use harsh facial cleansers It is important for people with dry skin to avoid using harsh cleansers. There are lots of gentle cleansers out there and some of them are even hydrating. Ignore Symptoms Sometimes, dry skin is an indication of a serious condition that requires treatment from a Doctor. Dry skin may be a sign of diabetes and thyroid conditions. Seeking out treatment when dry skin is persistent is important.

body![conjoined-girl-twins.jpg](https://steemitimages.com/DQmPWCcrhcHhSy5K6b4n1bLAtkKFSpWWHAfqDuJdthY1Qxr/conjoined-girl-twins.jpg) While undergoing treatment at the Odisha state government run Sishu Bhawan, the conjoined twins aged around three weeks has died on Wednesday night. It was first informed by Dr. Saroj Satpathy, Superintendent of Sishu Bhawan hospital. He stated that, while undergoing treatment, the conditions of the twins started deteriorated as they had developed acute breathing problem. Following which, on Wednesday, around 12:30 am the twins died. The twins belonged to the couple, Kishore Dutta and Sumitra Dutta of Sharnakula village of Nayagarh district and were born on 1st December. With a single liver and a defective heart, the twins were joined at their chests. On Tuesday they were shifted to the Sishu Bhawan hospital for the treatment. Recently, AIIMS, New Delhi had usefully able to separate conjoined twins Jaga and Kalia and all the costs were taken by the state government. After the shifting of the twins to the premier children’s hospital, the state government had announced that it would bear all the medical expenses of the twin girl. But unfortunately, they have died. State health minister Pratap Jena, who has been personally monitoring the status of Jaga and Kalia said: “It was really unfortunate that the twins did not survive to undergo surgery for their separation.”
