| title | Blockchain - Transforming Africa |
| body | The Consensus Economy is a pillar in today’s society. Technology plays a role in the development of this economy, especially open-source technologies like the internet, the blockchain, and other distributed ledger technologies. I want to highlight the blockchain as the linchpin for the iteration of this economy. But there’s much to learn and so many ideas to try out. In this world, to propagate ideas requires funding, and how this comes along is through the framework of research. This is especially so in the African perspective where the blockchain technology could provide real world case studies on a massively impactful basis across the spectrum of society. Let me put this into perspective: BitHub Africa, a blockchain accelerator produced a report titled The African Blockchain Report, which is a 136-page rendition of the huge avenues that blockchain creates. Furthermore, the UK Research Council recently granted £3.6 million in blockchain grants to seven projects. The blockchain industry has matured quite well, moving from the already proved financial use case. And herein lies the field of research - so much can be built on the blockchain. On Tuesday, August 1 saw the coming together of the business community in Kenya at Moringa School to explore the ideas floating around with regard to the blockchain technology. Of particular excitement was XinFin's proposal, which is a nonprofit organization that aims to address the infrastructure deficit for governments and institutions via blockchain. Xinfin.org has essentially developed private permissioned blockchain platform over the Ethereum network. The smart contracts have been matched to real world contracts for project financing except for one major change - Xinfin. Xinfin.org has allocated up to 25% of the underpinning blockchain tokens that are available to financiers as a bounty/cashback for financing infrastructure projects. The native token XDC also functions as a real time gross settlement mechanism for the transfer of funds and trades. This bounty or cash back of up to 25% of the tokens motivates financiers to take up financing projects. Drawing from their whitepaper-“When blockchain tokens are created they are defined with the fixed set of supply over the period. Thus it would create a scarcity in the market and resulting in a multifold appreciation of value in almost every blockchain-based token that is launched, due to the urgency shown by its buyers over the limited supply. We believe that the bounty of cash back tokens and its inflation proof nature and potential for increasing in value will let the financiers offer easy terms to finance real world infrastructure projects. Our initial discussion with buyers, suppliers and financiers has given positive feedback to the business model.” The estimated financing requirement to close Africa's infrastructure deficit amounts to USD 93 billion, all the way to the close of 2020. Over the past decade, infrastructure has contributed close to a percentage point to the annual per capita GDP growth. Setting the infrastructure endowment on a positive trajectory could see this figure move to 3 percentage points according to the world bank. Addressing Kenya's infrastructure deficit will require that she spends an annual USD 4 billion within this decade if Kenya’s is to continue to stand out as a hub for economic development in East Africa and the greater African region. This is a remarkable figure and begs the question of what other efficient ways can the state adopt to fill this gap. And this is not to mention the USD 1 trillion global infrastructure deficit per annum. Surmounting the infrastructure bottleneck, XinFin reports would ameliorate the long-term-term economic growth for countries, communities and a wide range of industries, therefore it is a key driver for growth in the long haul. Emerging markets to suffer from the lack of investment in well-designed transport, renewable energy, and social infrastructure, which curtails a lot of the economic development needed. The primary impediment to greater infrastructure investment is not the lack of available financing given abundant funds in world markets and very low long-term interest rates. The problem is inefficiency in systems to match the supply of finance from the private sector with investable projects. The XinFin team has built a blockchain infrastructure suitable for a private distributed network of stakeholders (investors, governments, institutions and suppliers) spread across the world. Kofi Afrikanus, fondly known as the cryptotraveler and the African Community manager for XinFin said, “this is an unprecedented opportunity for the business community to finance critical public infrastructure projects with low cost financing. Interestingly, XinFin's XDC token is among the few without transaction fees. Our platform as a crowdsourcing platform brings together financiers and infrastructure developers like institutions & government and hedge the risking with 25% bounty backed by our XDC tokens. I'm therefore urging the business community here in Kenya to present their proposals for consideration for funds to bridge the infrastructure gap.” This is basically how it works: • Investors use the XinFin platform to convert Fiat currency into XD• The transaction is recorded on an unalterable smart contract system, which runs on ethereum. • The XDC serve as entry credits for investors to fund infrastructure projects. • The money collected is used to pay contractors and service providers who build the toll road. • The entire development uses IoT devices that are linked to a cloud based data server, providing real time updates to the government and investors alike. • Once the road is constructed, people start using it, in return for toll fees. • The toll fee collected is used to repay the investors through a Contracted Bank Account. • Thus, a transparent and unbiased system like this ensures quicker financing of government infrastructure at a cheaper price with repayment assurance for investors. Whilst agriculture is the backbone of our economy, infrastructure would be termed as the hands and legs of the same. Blockchain coming up to provide a solution to this often murky world is a win for the technology. However, truth be told, altering legacy systems has always been the formidable task for the pioneering technology, but the trajectory is always positive. Hopefully, the day will come when there will be decentralised publicly funded infrastructure projects on the blockchain. |

"title": "Blockchain - Transforming Africa",
"body": "The Consensus Economy is a pillar in today’s society. Technology plays a role in the development of this economy, especially open-source technologies like the internet, the blockchain, and other distributed ledger technologies. \n\nI want to highlight the blockchain as the linchpin for the iteration of this economy. But there’s much to learn and so many ideas to try out. In this world, to propagate ideas requires funding, and how this comes along is through the framework of research. \n\nThis is especially so in the African perspective where the blockchain technology could provide real world case studies on a massively impactful basis across the spectrum of society. \n\nLet me put this into perspective:\n\n BitHub Africa, a blockchain accelerator produced a report titled The African Blockchain Report, which is a 136-page rendition of the huge avenues that blockchain creates. \n\nFurthermore, the UK Research Council recently granted £3.6 million in blockchain grants to seven projects. The blockchain industry has matured quite well, moving from the already proved financial use case. And herein lies the field of research - so much can be built on the blockchain.\n\nOn Tuesday, August 1 saw the coming together of the business community in Kenya at Moringa School to explore the ideas floating around with regard to the blockchain technology. \n\nOf particular excitement was XinFin's proposal, which is a nonprofit organization that aims to address the infrastructure deficit for governments and institutions via blockchain. \n\nXinfin.org has essentially developed private permissioned blockchain platform over the Ethereum network. The smart contracts have been matched to real world contracts for project financing except for one major change - Xinfin. Xinfin.org has allocated up to 25% of the underpinning blockchain tokens that are available to financiers as a bounty/cashback for financing infrastructure projects. \n\nThe native token XDC also functions as a real time gross settlement mechanism for the transfer of funds and trades. This bounty or cash back of up to 25% of the tokens motivates financiers to take up financing projects. \n\nDrawing from their whitepaper-“When blockchain tokens are created they are defined with the fixed set of supply over the period. Our initial discussion with buyers, suppliers and financiers has given positive feedback to the business model.”\n\nThe estimated financing requirement to close Africa's infrastructure deficit amounts to USD 93 billion, all the way to the close of 2020. Over the past decade, infrastructure has contributed close to a percentage point to the annual per capita GDP growth. \n\nSetting the infrastructure endowment on a positive trajectory could see this figure move to 3 percentage points according to the world bank. \n\nAddressing Kenya's infrastructure deficit will require that she spends an annual USD 4 billion within this decade if Kenya’s is to continue to stand out as a hub for economic development in East Africa and the greater African region. This is a remarkable figure and begs the question of what other efficient ways can the state adopt to fill this gap. And this is not to mention the USD 1 trillion global infrastructure deficit per annum.\n\nSurmounting the infrastructure bottleneck, XinFin reports would ameliorate the long-term-term economic growth for countries, communities and a wide range of industries, therefore it is a key driver for growth in the long haul. \n\nEmerging markets to suffer from the lack of investment in well-designed transport, renewable energy, and social infrastructure, which curtails a lot of the economic development needed.\n\nThe primary impediment to greater infrastructure investment is not the lack of available financing given abundant funds in world markets and very low long-term interest rates. The problem is inefficiency in systems to match the supply of finance from the private sector with investable projects. \n\nThe XinFin team has built a blockchain infrastructure suitable for a private distributed network of stakeholders (investors, governments, institutions and suppliers) spread across the world. \n\nKofi Afrikanus, fondly known as the cryptotraveler and the African Community manager for XinFin said, “this is an unprecedented opportunity for the business community to finance critical public infrastructure projects with low cost financing. Interestingly, XinFin's XDC token is among the few without transaction fees. Our platform as a crowdsourcing platform brings together financiers and infrastructure developers like institutions & government and hedge the risking with 25% bounty backed by our XDC tokens. I'm therefore urging the business community here in Kenya to present their proposals for consideration for funds to bridge the infrastructure gap.”\n\nThis is basically how it works:\n• Investors use the XinFin platform to convert Fiat currency into XD• The transaction is recorded on an unalterable smart contract system, which runs on ethereum.\n• The XDC serve as entry credits for investors to fund infrastructure projects.\n• The money collected is used to pay contractors and service providers who build the toll road.\n• The entire development uses IoT devices that are linked to a cloud based data server, providing real time updates to the government and investors alike.\n• Once the road is constructed, people start using it, in return for toll fees.\n• The toll fee collected is used to repay the investors through a Contracted Bank Account.\n• Thus, a transparent and unbiased system like this ensures quicker financing of government infrastructure at a cheaper price with repayment assurance for investors.\n\nWhilst agriculture is the backbone of our economy, infrastructure would be termed as the hands and legs of the same. \n\nBlockchain coming up to provide a solution to this often murky world is a win for the technology. However, truth be told, altering legacy systems has always been the formidable task for the pioneering technology, but the trajectory is always positive. \n\nHopefully, the day will come when there will be decentralised publicly funded infrastructure projects on the blockchain.",

| title | Cryptocurrency Rise in Africa |
| body | Crypto-currencies have been nascent in the world and nowhere is this uniquely evident than in Africa, especially when you consider the inefficiencies that have been there in Africa, whether there are payment, political, regulatory or socioeconomic. When Bitcoin-on-the-Blockchain was invented, laying down the path of the cryptocurrency boom that was to be had, it was left to the imagination how far it would go. Where Africa has had historical inefficiencies, it also is at the heart of technological advances, especially with the Kenyan MPESA that presented to the world a system of payment that had been unprecedented. While it was at the control of Safaricom, it, however, opened up the country in a way that set the stage for today, where more than 40% of Kenya's GDP passes through the platform. One can only begin to conceive of ways how crypto-currencies and the technology can rise to the occasion in Emerging markets like Africa, a continent of 1 billion people - 1 billion ways to connect this people. Africa is not left behind in this move towards a cashless ecosystem. The peoples across Africa are using mobile money and other forms of cashless payment to replace the use of paper money. A cashless ecosystem is the norm in many parts of Africa, especially with the continued introduction of mobile money in the last few years. Mobile money has given Africa the ability to leapfrog the world and as such lay the groundwork for integrating this alternative form of digital currency with crypto-currencies. However, cryptocurrency in Africa presents new challenges in this digital currency revolution. Challenges that have led some central banks in the four major countries that Bitcoin and other crypto-currencies have taken flight: like South Africa, Ghana, Nigeria, and Kenya . In November 2015, the government of South Africa introduced a cyber-laundering bill to efficiently regulate electronic and digital transactions in cyberspace. In December 2015, the Central Bank of Kenya issued a warning against using them, a sort of do it at your own risk. In January 2017, the government of Nigeria issued a ban on Bitcoin transactions in an attempt to curtail the activities of Bitcoin exchange operators like NairaEx. We see in Zimbabwe, the government is currently working on a regulatory structure on Bitcoin which it plans to introduce soon. ButMari, an incubated of BitHub Africa is right in the heart of the Zimbabwean economy, which provides a tabula rasa for currency experimentation. Bitcoin is the largest and most widely-used cryptocurrency on the market, but there are other currencies that are growing, such as Ethereum, Dash, Ripple (which sold out to the banks). Digital currency is growing at an increasingly brisk pace. Africa seems to be responding to this global trend in digital currency in various ways. In November 2016, and this makes me proud as an African, Senegal took the step to being one of the first countries in the world to announce the introduction of a blockchain-based national digital currency alongside it’s fiat counterpart, the CFA Franc. This idea of a blockchain-based digital currency is new in Africa and it is being spearheaded by Senegal. I believe very soon it will be necessary for other African governments to follow in kind. Bitcoin, which is popular in Sub-Saharan and East Africa seems to be filling the need to serve underbanked communities and where the cryptocurrency steps in place of sometimes absent currencies. We can see a lot of businesses, especially in Nigeria, that use bitcoin to provide services akin to those of banks, such as offering loans. Companies have emerged that are closing the gap left by money transfer intermediaries and banks, when it comes to cheaper and faster international transfers. International transfers to Africa are the most expensive in the world, amounting to 4 billion dollars a year. Additionally, online and offline businesses also continue to pay huge prices for transferring money abroad or even domestically, as the majority of banks charge between 10-19% on any transfers to, from and within the African continent. The biggest factor that will continue to affect the existence of crypto-currencies is regulation, especially compliance. So we ask, what does the growth in the use of digital currency mean for the African compliance sector? Are we ready for the challenges ahead? Digital currency compliance is still in its infancy, yet, constantly being tasked with global-level demands. The world will not wait for us to sort out our compliance issues before more complex functions are introduced. Africa should not be playing catch up, but be at the forefront of this KRIIs (Key Research and Industry Initiatives). Sheeroh Murega Kiarie is a freelancer who blogs at workonlinekenya.com |

| title | Anyone Feeling Particularly Superstitious ...? |
| body | How superstitious are you, fellow Steemitian? You would think that living in a highly technological world would be enough to get rid of all superstitions. Not really! Where some taboos originated from is an open question. And in other places, questioning the rationale behind a taboo is a taboo and almost blasphemous. Some circles argue that taboos exist probably because they promote morality, advocate spiritual discipline and strengthen peaceful coexistence. Let’s dive deep into the most absurd superstitious taboos observed in the world today. 1. Indonesia If you grew up somewhere where calling on your grandpa goes something like “Grandpa Moses”, banish your old pap’s first name soon as you set out for Indonesia. Unmistakably, this is aimed at respecting your elders; it is a taboo to call elders by their first names. What’s unmistakably absurd, though, is touching someone’s head; it is completely unacceptable here. The head is believed to be the most sacred part of the body. Apparently, the head is out of touch, no pun intended. Speaking of touch, another hilarious taboo is you are not to use your left hand to give or receive something. No one here will accept it, anyways. Also, includes being affectionate in public—just get a room, will you? 2. Kenya. Here’s another awesomely tranquil country, where if you visit or are a native, you might always want to rise and shine before the crack of dawn to hit a track for a healthy dose of jogs. Although rapidly losing grip across the land of Maasai Mara, Kenyans believe that if you set out on a journey early in the morning and on the way meet a woman, you are supposed to return to the house and start your journey afresh. Completely. That involves climbing back to bed, waiting on your alarm to ring again, snoozing it five times like you always do, then cursing it before finally dragging yourself up and pulling off that comical little morning routine you have. And oh, be sure to step out of bed first and foremost only with your right foot, if you want good luck for the rest of the day. Only then can you change your clothes and restart your morning jog or what have you. Apparently, that’d confuse spirits of bad luck since women are (or were, rather) considered a bad omen. Now imagine meeting five women one morning. You might as well sleep in for the rest of the day. 3. China Famous for their heavily curried cuisine, the Chinese have taboos that dictate behavior with regards to food and table manners. Next time you head out to Beijing or Guangzhou or Hangzhou, or just hang out in any Chinatown for a feast, literally keep those chopsticks to yourself. It’s a taboo to point each other with chopsticks and to slash noodles when cooking them. It is believed that the longer the noodles, the longer your life and vice versa. Watch out that the chef doesn’t cut yours in half before you’ve written your will. 4. Vietnam The rule of three applies in Vietnam. Number three is related to deity. It is believed that if you take a photo of three people, the devil will pluck away the one in the middle. Threesome selfies might earn you a dance with El Diablo, apparently. Mortals revere spiritual powers and would avoid anything considered blasphemous for one can be punished for effrontery. Some little things we do turn out to be the craziest things we’ll ever do. And although some are dissipating (thank the heavens), these are just 4 instances of some of the superstitious beliefs around the world. We know your people have a bunch of excesses to boast. Why not share those in the comments section below and have us crack up about it? |
