      "body": "My maternal grandmother died of old age on the 31st of December. She was the only grandparent I had. Well I had my paternal grandmother too but she was quite horrible. No really, I'm not some self absorbent prick.\n\nAnyhoo, the last happy memory I have of my grandmother is of 13 years ago, at a cousin's wedding. Age had already started to kick in, she had trouble with every physical motion, but her eyes were so kind. She loved us, all of us. No matter how much her own children ignored her, she always had something to give, something to share, something to warm your heart with.\n\nWhy am I sharing this today? Because today I attended a ritual meant to bring her peace. I don't believe any ritual can bring peace after death, when life itself couldn't. Which brings me to the question: Why are people so uncomfortable with the old, frail & dying? Well at least in my country most are.\n\nPerhaps it is to shield themselves, to begin snipping those ties of attachment that whip so hard when they finally snap after years of strain. But can you shield yourself from suffering? The only way to mitigate that is by sharing, not by cornering. She was suffering, yes. Deaf in one ear, multiple bone-related disorders, gradual organ failures and everything old age brings. But is 86 really that big a number? People live longer, happier, healthier lives. More than age, she was suffering of seclusion.\n\nWe left her. Except one of her sons with whom she lived, no one gave her the time she deserved. She raised four kids all on her own(her husband died very early), worked a job, and when she retired, lived and raised her kids off the pension she received. And yet two of her children didn't even visit her during her last month with us. How can you go through so much together and then just abandon someone?\n\nI'm not some saint here. Looking back I don't think I ever thought about her. But I do think about my mother everyday. And hence this incinerating, painful realisation: Even brothers and sisters can casually shrug off responsibilities. Responsibilities catering to someone who made them what they are. I don't know why that happened, I never used to intervene in \"adult\" stuff, but I can't imagine abandoning my own mother. Yes the old get cranky, yes they demand attention and no, that is not the same as a child (read Shakespeare's [The Seven Ages](https://genius.com/William-shakespeare-the-seven-ages-of-man-all-the-worlds-a-stage-annotated)). You can't possibly compare a child to an old person. A child is a blank canvas, the attention it needs is out of curiosity. An old person knows a lot, its need is out of seclusion.\n\nYou can't possibly repay your parents. You can't. What they've done for you, you can't match it bit for bit. Is that why people just accept impending death and let it be? Giving up is a big problem these days. Patience is a virtue indeed.\n\nIt's easier said than done though. Photographs, calls, living with them, I don't know what will work for you. But for your sake, I hope you soon find it. I hope I myself soon find it. \n\nSometimes a gentle hand on your forehead is all you need. I was lucky enough to do that for my grandma, and I hope you too get a chance. Language is just a tool, its what you do that stays.\n\n### Update on 2nd January 2017\nTurns out I bought a FitBit. LOL that is going well.       "body": "So while thinking out loud yesterday, I realised how our languages are so limited in scope. They are nowhere near to the speed of our thoughts, and for a medium of expressing thoughts, that is a very sad limitation.\n\nUntil we have a neural network connecting two or more minds (read Elon Musk's [Neuralink](https://www.techworld.com/data/what-is-neural-lace-3657074)), I've decide to learn as many languages as I can. The idea is to *think* in a different language. While this might or might not change my speed of expression, it just might affect my perception.\n\nIt's bewildering to think that the way our languages are structured, is just one of the infinite ones that could be. We have defined the elements and the rules that govern them. All that we know, is by virtue of our definition of it. Paradoxical much?\n\nBut what about feelings? What happens when we read a beautiful piece of prose/poetry? Research has shown how our emotions affect our physiological development. That is a scary amount of power. And to think that we can feel things by just reading about them, not necessarily experiencing them first hand, adds even more mystery to it: Just how much are our brains wired to the languages we use? And is the process re-writable? I intend to find out.\n\nWith AI rapidly developing languages of its own, which are many times more efficient than ours, we have to ask ourselves: What is going to happen to all these beautiful pieces of text and rules that we have created? Will they be reduced to a mere means of entertainment? Perhaps a toy for the weak minded. But more importantly, would our brains be able to endure something as intense and instantaneous as Neuralink? Would we be able to truly sleep and not filter out the noise?\n\nBut here's where it gets truly interesting. AI develops its logic on probability but it starts with what we make it learn. And the way we *write* AI is influenced by, you guessed it, our languages. We define the elements by projecting our perception (threads, spools, fabric), we structure the code, we imagine the landscape while building these things. Sure the creation might move to a better, more efficient medium but we would be the ones who enabled it.\n\nLanguages worldwide are disappearing at an alarming rate. It's not a question of whether we should save them or not, its the fact that we are losing different schools of thought with time. Despite their glaring limitations, languages are beautiful. Because they define our collective intelligence. While their future might be bleak, there is every reason to celebrate them today, for they are all we have.\n\n### Update on 1st January 2017\nTurns out I could recollect everything correctly. Yay?
