body![2b10df2fe36d12af70727778a072714dl-m0xd-w1020_h770_q80.jpg](https://cdn.steemitimages.com/DQmTa4NnygcJoHYeuXNpzU8o8pZWpGPNKmztF4RLDihxDVQ/2b10df2fe36d12af70727778a072714dl-m0xd-w1020_h770_q80.jpg) I woke up early in the morning about 3 a.m. Something just didn’t seem right in the house. I lay there awake for a while and then decided to go downstairs to the kitchen to get a glass of water. It had been raining the night before and I could see outside through our sliding glass door that looks out onto the back lawn that it was a little misty or even foggy out. I filled a glass of water from the tap and then sat down at the kitchen table. I was looking outside at the lawn through the sliding glass doors. I could see our big sycamore trees next to the fence and just beyond them, the landscape was barely visible through the fog. That’s when I saw it. That’s when I saw the ghost. The sycamore trees seemed to be moving. Their branches were twisting and they seemed to be forming an image. I wasn’t sure, but it looked like a human face. It was so white that it seemed to glow. It was kind of billowing, too, like seeing a person who was swimming underwater. You can see them, but you can’t really make out the edges. The eyes seemed to be staring straight at me and I could feel the anger in them. It floated there for a moment or two and then I guess it must have sensed that I was looking at it because it turned a little toward me and then… and then… it just dissolved. The sycamore trees began moving again and branches went back totheir original positions. I stood there for what seemed like an hour, just waiting for it to come back. I didn’t even realize that I had been standing. The next morning I was telling my mother about it and she got a strange look on her face. I could tell that the story had got her scared. She said “I never told you this before, because I didn’t want to worry you, but years ago, before you were born, before your father and I got married… I had a sister.” “My sister and I were both in love with the same man. Your father. We argued all the time and fought over him. It was terrible. And finally, when your father proposed to me, my sister couldn’t take it. She went insane.” “We found her the next day. Out by the sycamore trees. She had taken her own life. She had taken an axe and chopped off her own legs. She bled to death out there in the garden. Under the sycamore trees.” “A few days later, we received a letter in the mail. It was addressed to your father…” My mother broke off. Her voice was hoarse and there were tears in her eyes. I was almost speechless as well. She opened one of the kitchen drawers and took out a small envelope. “It was from my sister”, she whispered. My mother handed me the envelope and when I opened it, a small piece of paper fluttered out. It contained a poem, in a handwriting that was disturbed and scrawled. It read: “I remember when You took me for a walk under the sycamore trees The dark trees that blow In the breeze And I’ll always see you And you’ll always see me In the branches that blow In the breeze I’ll see you in the trees. I’ll watch you from the trees.”

titleUncertainty, Expectations and Shocks
bodyThe fact that the future is uncertain makes investment projects sometimes produce disappointing results or even fail totally. As a result, firms spend considerable time trying to predict future trends so that they can, hopefully, invest only in projects that are likely to succeed. ![13828533_l.jpg](https://cdn.steemitimages.com/DQmVyCs6TeA8ice4NSyRvboWUntbQu7k9XTraETG7iZV5wg/13828533_l.jpg) This implies that macroeconomics has to take into account expectations about the future. Expectations are hugely important for two reasons. The more obvious reason involves the effect that changing expectations have on current behavior. If firms grow more pessimistic about the future returns that are likely to come from current investments, they are going to invest less today than they would if they were more optimistic. Expectations therefore have a large effect on economic growth since increased pessimism will lead to less current investment and, subsequently, less future consumption. The less-obvious reason that expectations are so important has to do with what happens when expectations are unmet. Firms are often forced to cope with s hocks — situations in which they were expecting one thing to happen but then something else happened. For instance, consider a situation in which a firm decides to build a highspeed railroad that will shuttle passengers between Washington, D.C., and New York. They do so expecting it to be very popular and make a handsome profit. But if it unexpectedly turns out to be unpopular and loses money, the railroad must figure out how to respond. Should the railroad go out of business completely? Should it attempt to see if it can turn a profit by hauling cargo instead of passengers? Is there a possibility that the venture might succeed if the firm borrows $30 million from a bank to pay for a massive advertising campaign? These sorts of decisions are necessitated by the shock and surprise of having to deal with an unexpected situation. Economies are exposed to both demand shocks and supply shocks. Demand shocks are unexpected changes in the demand for goods and services. Supply shocks are unexpected changes in the supply of goods and services. Please note that the word shock only tells us that something unexpected has happened. It does not tell us whether what has happened is unexpectedly good or unexpectedly bad. To make things more clear, economists use more specific terms. For instance, a positive demand shock refers to a situation in which demand turns out to be higher than expected, while a negative demand shock refers to a situation in which demand turns out to be lower than expected. Economists believe that most short-run fluctuations are the result of demand shocks. Supply shocks do happen in some cases and are very important when they do occur. But we will focus most of our attention in this chapter and subsequent chapters on demand shocks, how they affect the economy, and how government policy may be able to help the economy adjust to them. But why are demand shocks such a big problem? Why would we have to consider calling in the government to help deal with them? And why can’t firms deal with demand shocks on their own? The answer to these questions is that the prices of many goods and services are inflexible (slow to change, or “sticky”) in the short run. As we will explain, this implies that price changes do not quickly equalize the quantities demanded of such goods and services with their respective quantities supplied. Instead, because prices are inflexible, the economy is forced to respond in the short run to demand shocks primarily through changes in output and employment rather than through changes in prices. Wishing you all a beautiful week.

titleAdvantages of Corporations
body![corporations.JPG](https://cdn.steemitimages.com/DQmWUQSESg7Dokoig8xQwkznTj5rxUPwfQNecgqW1mCo84R/corporations.JPG) Certain advantages of the corporate form of business enterprise have catapulted it into a dominant sales and profit position in the United States. The corporation is by far the most effective form of business organization for raising money to finance the expansion of its facilities and capabilities. The corporation employs unique methods of finance—the selling of stocks (equity financing) and bonds (debt financing)—that enable it to pool the financial resources of large numbers of people. A common stock represents a share in the ownership of a corporation. The purchaser of a stock certificate has the right to vote for corporate officers and to share in dividends. If you buy 1000 of the 100,000 shares issued by OutTell, Inc., then you own 1 percent of the company, are entitled to 1 percent of any dividends declared by the board of directors, and control 1 percent of the votes in the annual election of corporate officials. In contrast, a corporate bond does not bestow any corporate ownership on the purchaser. A bond purchaser is simply lending money to a corporation. A bond is an IOU, in acknowledgment of a loan, whereby the corporation promises to pay the holder a fixed amount set forth on the bond at some specified future date and other fixed amounts (interest payments) every year up to the bond’s maturity date. For example, you might purchase a 10-year OutTell bond with a face value of $1000 and a 5 percent rate of interest. This means that in exchange for your $1000, OT promises you a $50 interest payment for each of the next 10 years and then repays your $1000 principal at the end of that period. Financing through sales of stocks and bonds also provides other advantages to those who purchase these corporate securities. An individual investor can spread risks by buying the securities of several corporations. And it is usually easy for holders of corporate securities to sell their holdings. Organized stock exchanges and bond markets simplify the transfer of securities from sellers to buyers. This “ease of sale” increases the willingness of savers to make financial investments in corporate securities. Besides, corporations have easier access to bank credit than do other types of business organizations. Corporations are better risks and are more likely to become profitable clients of banks. Corporations provide limited liability to owners (stockholders), who risk only what they paid for their stock. Their personal assets are not at stake if the corporation defaults on its debts. Creditors can sue the corporation as a legal entity but cannot sue the owners of the corporation as individuals. Because of their ability to attract financial capital, successful corporations can easily expand the scope of their operations and realize the benefits of expansion. For example, they can take advantage of mass-production technologies and division of labor. A corporation can hire specialists in production, accounting, and marketing functions and thus improve efficiency. Unlike sole proprietorships and partnerships, the corporation has a life independent of its owners and its officers. As a legal entity, corporations are immortal. The transfer of corporate ownership through inheritance or sale of stock does not disrupt the continuity of the corporation. Corporations have permanence that lends itself to long-range planning and growth. This permanence and growth explains why virtually all the nation’s largest business enterprises are corporations.

titleUncertainty, Expectations, and Shocks
body![13828533_l.jpg](https://cdn.steemitimages.com/DQmVyCs6TeA8ice4NSyRvboWUntbQu7k9XTraETG7iZV5wg/13828533_l.jpg) The fact that the future is uncertain makes investment projects sometimes produce disappointing results or even fail totally. As a result, firms spend considerable time trying to predict future trends so that they can, hopefully, invest only in projects that are likely to succeed. This implies that macroeconomics has to take into account expectations about the future.

As a result, firms spend considerable time trying to predict future trends so that they can, hopefully, invest only in projects that are likely to succeed. This implies that macroeconomics has to take into account expectations about the future.\nExpectations are hugely important for two reasons.\nThe more obvious reason involves the effect that changing expectations have on current behavior. If firms grow more pessimistic about the future returns that are likely to come from current investments, they are going to invest less today than they would if they were more optimistic. Expectations therefore have a large effect on economic growth since increased pessimism will lead to less current investment and, subsequently, less future consumption. titleI'm Back With My Second Post - My Personal Mission Statement
bodyIndividuals and businesses create missions statements to provide purpose and direction. ... Creating a personal mission statement forces clarity, helps you define purpose, and serves as the foundation for your life goals. My mission is to live with integrity and to make a difference in the lives of others. To fulfill this mission: I have charity: I seek out and love everyone -- each one -- regardless of his situation. I sacrifice: I devote my time, talents, and resources to my mission. I inspire: I teach by example that we are all children of a loving Heavenly Father and that every Goliath can be overcome. I am impactful: What I do makes a difference in the lives of others. These roles take priority in achieving my mission: Husband -- my partner is the most important person in my life. Together we contribute the fruits of harmony, industry, charity, and thrift. Father -- I help my children experience progressively greater joy in their lives. Son/Brother -- I am frequently "there" for support and love. Christian -- God can count on me to keep my covenants and to serve his other children. Neighbor -- The love of Christ is visible through my actions toward others. Change Agent -- I am a catalyst for developing high performance in large organizations. Scholar -- I learn important new things every day. Writing your mission in terms of the important roles in your life gives you balance and harmony. It keeps each role clearly before you. You can review your roles frequently to make sure that you don't get totally absorbed by one role to the exclusion of others that are equally or even more important in your life. After you identify your various roles, then you can think about the Long Term Goals are plans you make that support the principles described in your Mission Statement. These goals should represent areas you want to focus on in the near future. Typically, Long Term Goals take longer than a week to complete, but are most specific than the lifetime goals of your Mission Statement.long-term goals you want to accomplish in each of those roles. We're into the right brain again, using imagination, creativity, conscience, and inspiration. If these goals are the extension of a mission statement based on correct principles, they will be vitally different from the goals people normally set. They will be in harmony with correct principles, with natural laws, which gives you greater power to achieve them. They are not someone else's goals you have absorbed. They are your goals. They reflect your deepest values, your unique talent, your sense of mission. And they grow out of your chosen roles in life. An effective goal focuses primarily on results rather than activity. It identifies where you want to be, and, in the process, helps you determine where you are. It gives you important information on how to get there, and it tells you when you have arrived. It unifies your efforts and energy. It gives meaning and purpose to all you do. And it can finally translate itself into daily activities so that you are proactive, you are in charge of your life, you are making happen each day the things that will enable you to fulfill your personal mission statement. Roles and goals give structure and organized direction to your personal mission. If you don't yet have a personal mission statement, it's a good place to begin. Just identifying the various areas of your life and the two or three important results you feel you should accomplish in each area to move ahead gives you an overall perspective of your life and a sense of direction.

You can review your roles frequently to make sure that you don't get totally absorbed by one role to the exclusion of others that are equally or even more important in your life.\nAfter you identify your various roles, then you can think about the Long Term Goals are plans you make that support the principles described in your Mission Statement. These goals should represent areas you want to focus on in the near future. Typically, Long Term Goals take longer than a week to complete, but are most specific than the lifetime goals of your Mission Statement.long-term goals you want to accomplish in each of those roles.\nWe're into the right brain again, using imagination, creativity, conscience, and inspiration. If these goals are the extension of a mission statement based on correct principles, they will be vitally different from the goals people normally set. They will be in harmony with correct principles, with natural laws, which gives you greater power to achieve them.\nThey are not someone else's goals you have absorbed. They are your goals. They reflect your deepest values, your unique talent, your sense of mission. And they grow out of your chosen roles in life.\nAn effective goal focuses primarily on results rather than activity. It identifies where you want to be, and, in the process, helps you determine where you are. It gives you important information on how to get there, and it tells you when you have arrived. It unifies your efforts and energy. It gives meaning and purpose to all you do. And it can finally translate itself into daily activities so that you are proactive, you are in charge of your life, you are making happen each day the things that will enable you to fulfill your personal mission statement.\nRoles and goals give structure and organized direction to your personal mission. If you don't yet have a personal mission statement, it's a good place to begin. Just identifying the various areas of your life and the two or three important results you feel you should accomplish in each area to move ahead gives you an overall perspective of your life and a sense of direction.",
