They'll go far if they can stay alive. Side note, it's two Catons now, Afrin got conquered by the Turks. Comrade Hakim(who is from Iraq) gives a well informed analysis of it, there are Kurds in Iraq, which are vastly different from the ones in Rojava. titleAnother Look At Rojava
body#
Rojava Gets Yet Again Another Terrible Analysis
![](https://cdn.steemitimages.com/DQmRoVjQwms5au93C8M6GLJfp1eYJ3FEVk5wcJDYdLjgXtZ/image.png) ___
This place needs no real introduction because it is one of the centers of a modern day conflict but it will get one anyway. Although localized to the middle east this conflict managed to draw many volunteers from foreign nations to fight for its cause. It's almost like a modern day Catalonia in that sense. However this parallel is not merely seen in the number of international volunteers but is seen in what this region attempts to do for the future. It has been said to be one of the most progressive states in the middle east and perhaps the world granting rights to all religions, ethnic groups, and women. It has been stated to be one of the newest places for anarchism offering local autonomous governments and erasing the power of the state entirely. However like Catalonia it has often been praised for it goals and starting achievements but the problems and conflicts have often been brushed away. While it is argued that Rojava is one of the most progressive places out there, it can also be argued that it is deserving of criticism and condemnations for its problems. It must not be supported blindly. It needs to be diagnosed and understood properly so as to not allow these deviations to permeate both there and in other movements.
#
The Ideas of the Region

https://cdn.steemitimages.com/DQmWfH6DtFiH8G1Q58ut21nJLvyVqPt6TNh4MgafiD1TADP/image.png
--- ---
The main fighters in the Rojava conflict were the PKK and the YPG. Even though these two militias were formed by different parties and groups they both followed the ideas of one man in particular Abdullah Ocalan. Ocalan was the founder of the PKK, the Kurdistan Workers Party and launched attacks on the Turkish government. He was later captured and imprisoned in Turkey. His early solution to the Kurdish independence problem was to attack turkey and its military in order to gain independence. He has since argued for a peaceful solution to the end of the Kurdish Turkey conflict. It is important to note that Ocalan and the PKK was originally Marxist Leninist however while in prison Ocalan began to read other theorists most notably Murray Book chin. This influenced him greatly and he has adopted something called “Democratic Confederalism”. Essentially it's an implementation of Bookchin’s ideals of democratic pluralism, direct democracy, and ecology. The YPG and PKK revere Ocalan as a hero of the Kurds and implemented his new ideas of Democratic Confederalism. This is where Rojava gains it ideas from. It is set out to be a very Libertarian Socialist region perhaps even Anarchist. This would be the foundation for the Rojava constitution.
#
The Constitution

The Charter of the Social Contract is the official constitution of Northern Democratic Syria (as Rojava has been recently called). The constitution seems to be the most modern age and liberal constitution out there currently. It secures political, gender, and religious rights for the people in Rojava. It makes a point for the right of freedom of speech and expression. Women are seen as equal in the eyes of the law and are offered the same rights as men. The Charter explicitly states that it incorporates the UN Declaration on Human Rights alongside a number of other international declarations on civil liberties and rights of humans. It also stipulates that the main political power comes from the people and the public institutions are elected by popular vote. The constitution seems to make Rojava out to be the direct democratic autonomous region it purports to be but the real question is how does it work in practice?
#
How it Looks so Far

![](https://cdn.steemitimages.com/DQmZ4a8GjWSTTPnddroEp8NTPBAKHZZctkhPftecoAV1QVu/image.png)
--- ---
Let's look at the goals that have been achieved by Rojava. To start off with it must be said that women do have equality within this region. The edict of gender equality and feminism has been greatly implemented. Although it must be stated that the equality is not fully complete. The Feminism of Rojava seems to mainly be centered around the military and the YPG or the women's unit: the YPJ. Women are also somewhat lacking within the political sphere. However this isn't a condemnation but more a place of improvement. This was a similar situation that the EZLN faced after it took power. This seems more of a few transitory problems that will be smoothed out as Rojava progresses.

Another spot of praise is the autonomous regions. The three cantons of the region have within them many different committees, communes and assemblies have been formed to address many social needs of the people such as economic inequality, women's issues, and health care. These groups discuss said problems and are elected directly by these people. These committees then represent the people in the main village and town meetings. This is a promising sign as this is essentially direct democracy at its basis. It is also especially promising considering that there are also workers councils being set up run for and by the workers and that's something so astonishing to see. That workers will have a say in their society and will have a say in their workplace is amazing it’s something only dreamed about and to see it almost achievable is a great step for workers.

Now comes the most controversial part, the problems. To begin with private property still exists within Rojava and is explicitly guaranteed by the constitution. Now the constitution also states that natural resources will be held in common by the people and society but mentions nothing of workers owning the means of production or workers owning their workplace. There also seems to be no guarantee of workers rights within the constitution. All of this is a little frightening. So this really isn't the socialist or communist region that its portrayed to be well at least not yet anyway.

The direct democracy mentioned earlier also has some problems within its existence as well. A parliamentary like organization called the Democratic Self Rule Administration has been created. This essential operates as a classical assembly with traditional parties rather than councils. This is supposed to work as another legislature besides the councils. The councils will be made up of all social groups and those councils will be voted with direct democracy and on the other side is the Democratic Self Rule Administration which will be a parliament. It is unsure if this is temporary or the direction that Rojava will be taking in the future. Another big issue is that any real criticism of Ocalan is not really tolerated. Deviation from his teachings or questioning his ideas are not accepted well and there's a bit of a cult of personality in Rojava. This is also a troubling development in what is supposed to be a truly direct democratic society. Finally it must be clearly stated that Rojava and the YPG aren't creating a revolution. This isn't a national liberation front or guerrilla insurrection, well of course excluding Afrin (which is currently fighting a civil war). Rojava is attempting to be a model which is to then later spread and subvert the current state by using the mediums of the current state. And that's really odd and a bit terrible, If this works out then it will be the first peaceful transition from a state to an almost libertarian socialist democracy. The catch? It will be the first and only peaceful revolution where an autonomous region has subverted the traditional government in a history that is riddled with automatic state repression and destruction. This is the nature of Rojava. It is a bit of an odd place that is so close to having a real change yet strays too far to be anything but the same as the other parts of Kurdistan.
#
The Future?

![](https://cdn.steemitimages.com/DQmQn15YgxDNs2YXD5G7Qzk82QCjLj3qfJMtLCVXQCb8RAF/image.png)
--- ---
I know it sounds like a condemnation of that entire region as a failure but there are promising aspects of this middle eastern experiment. It important to critique the problems of anything that contains problems. To just brush all the problems away as if its not applicable or shouldn't be applied to this particular case is lunacy. There are some real contradictions and failings contained within Rojava and they need to be addressed. However it is also unfair to just condemn the thing all together and to just say away with it all. This is an attempt at something different, as a new way of living and with this of course there will be failings and difficulties that arise. These things should not be seen as the be all end all but rather as problems which will hopefully be fixed as time comes to pass. Rojava is something that should be critiqued but also something that should be supported as it grows it shouldn't be simply abandoned. Everyone forgets that Rome wasn't built in a day. They also seem forget that it was however destroyed in one.

\n\n#
The Ideas of the Region
\n
    https://cdn.steemitimages.com/DQmWfH6DtFiH8G1Q58ut21nJLvyVqPt6TNh4MgafiD1TADP/image.png
\n---\n---\n
The main fighters in the Rojava conflict were the PKK and the YPG. Even though these two militias were formed by different parties and groups they both followed the ideas of one man in particular Abdullah Ocalan. Ocalan was the founder of the PKK, the Kurdistan Workers Party and launched attacks on the Turkish government. He was later captured and imprisoned in Turkey. His early solution to the Kurdish independence problem was to attack turkey and its military in order to gain independence. He has since argued for a peaceful solution to the end of the Kurdish Turkey conflict. titleA Very Short History of The Black Panther Party: Part 1
body# America's most notorious party finally gets a terrible historical summarization ___ ![](https://cdn.steemitimages.com/DQmWMbYgM5oRhz1F6vdQfTHJq1fAbkj1MTEzDcoeoumxXgX/image.png) ###### (First six members of the Black Panthers. Top left to right: Elbert Howard, Huey Newton, Sherwin Forte, and Bobby Seale. Bottom: Reggie Forte and Little Bobby Hutton) --- They're probably one of the most controversial party in American history. The time they existed was one fraught with turbulence, fear, and change. They've been called many names: Terror group, Hate group, Crime syndicate. They've even been called the black KKK which is odd because last time I checked the Black Panthers never harassed white people and white neighborhood with violence and torches. Simply put the slander against this organization is enormous. It's received such slack because it attempted the impossible, it attempted revolutionary change for the better of Americans. Now of course the party is not free from criticisms, mistakes and bad decisions were made on numerous occasions. However it is a party with a lot of reverence and power behind it. It must be diagnosed and understood if we are to learn from both its mistakes and accomplishments. It should also be better understood in order to properly respect the memories of dead and currently imprisoned revolutionaries. ___ # Part 1: Turbulent Times Quickly ignoring that atrociously clichéd title, the times of the 60s and 70s were definitely a dangerous time. In the midst of a disastrous war and a growing peace movement the government also had to contend with a growing counter culture. Essentially people saw that there was glaring inequality in the system they lived in and decided that perhaps something should be done in order to fix these problems. Crazy right? But these movements were growing and causing a lot of turbulence for the establishment. Specifically the Civil Rights movement. Starting in the mid 50s it sought to end segregation and promote better freedom and equality to African Americans. It was immediately met with violence and hatred by both the American Government and the population. Killings, lynching, and riots were pervasive during this time along with ever increasing police brutality. Leaders such as Malcolm X and Martin Luther King Jr were assassinated spurring on more discontent and anger. The stage was certainly set with a lot of violence, oppression, and turbulence and this would be the stage upon which a young Merritt college student from Oakland would walk on. ___ # Part 2: Enter Huey Newton Huey P. Newton was born in Monroe Louisiana in 1942. He was the son of Amelia and Walter Newton. Walter Newton was a sharecropper and a Baptist preacher. The Newtons moved to Oakland California in 1945 as part of the Second Great Migration of African Americans from the south and into northern and western parts of the country. His family was quite poor and moved around frequently in the Bay area of San Francisco. He was arrested numerous times for gun possession and vandalism. He would note in his autobiography Revolutionary Suicide how school never engaged him and in fact he felt as if school had taken away all the enjoyment and wonder of learning. He said that he was never taught anything that involved him and his unique experience and that growing up he was “made to feel ashamed at being black”. He eventually graduated high school in 1959 and some how did this while also not being able to read. He however self taught himself to read and the first book he ever read was The Republic by Plato. He attended Merritt College and pursued an Associates of Arts degree. He continued reading more and more. Various political figures such as Karl Marx , Vladimir Lenin, Che Guevara, Malcolm X and Frantz Fanon. All of the political reading began to make him question his world and the society he lived in. At college he joined the African American Association and then met Bobby Seale. ___ # Part 3: Genesis of the Vanguard Both Bobby Seale and Huey Newton were part of the aforementioned African American Association but both felt that the organization was doing very little to help the people. They had developed a more revolutionary philosophy and while working at a anti-poverty community center they also formed a revolutionary approach to community service. Huey Newton was mainly dissatisfied with how these organizations failed to address police brutality and the economic inequality of African Americans. The solution for Huey Newton was rather simple if the police are going to patrol black neighborhoods then Huey Newton would patrol the police. They started off rather small. They bought Mao’s Little Red Book in bulk and sold copies back to other leftists radicals at a higher price. Using the money acquired they would buy guns and then patrol with the guns. At this exact same time the Lowndes County Freedom Organization was doing arms organizing and used the symbol of a Black Panther. Huey Newton decided to adopt this as their symbol and named his group the Black Panther Party for Self Defense. Their first recruit was sixteen year old Bobby Hutton. This formation set out the basic principles of the organization: community self defense, community service, and community patrolling. ___ # Part 4: Notorious beginnings The party began to patrol the police around all parts of Oakland while armed with guns. The panthers were clever and unlike police officers studied the law so as not to break it and often actively cited the law to police officers when it was violated. By doing this they had gained a small following of supporters. They're numbers started to rise when in 1967 they provided armed escort for Betty Shabazz the widow of Malcolm X who was a speaker at a conference held in his honor. Although the party had a strict self defense policy the image of young African Americans armed and defending their community wasn't well received by the police or the media. But nonetheless the party was growing. The party gained even more notoriety when in April of 1967 Denzil Dowell was shot dead by the police in North Richmond California. The family of Dowell called the Black Panthers when county officials refused to investigate. The Black Panthers held rallies and educated the people of their ideals and beliefs. It resonated with the community and the party gained even more supporters. However this next event would be the most notorious of notorious events in not only Black Panther history but in California history. The power of the Black Panther and their reputation began to spread in California. It frightened the state so much that the California State Assembly Committee on Criminal Procedure schedule to meet in May to discuss the Mulford Act which would make open carrying of public firearms illegal. The Panthers of course protested this and on May 2nd in Sacramento 25 armed Black Panthers protested the capital and some even stormed the assembly itself. However Bobby Seale and 5 other Panthers were arrested and pled guilty to disrupting a legislative session. But now they were widely known. The Panthers had gone from an Oakland centralized California militia to a country wide know Black Power defense group. However the Mulford Act passed anyway. The act passed without any protest from the NRA, which is surprising. You think the NRA a group dedicated to “patriots” and who always want gun rights in order to defend the people from a tyrannical government would go out in force against the Mulford Act. I wonder what made the Black Panthers different, I wonder what Segregated the Black Panthers in some way that made the NRA not want to support them. Even more surprising was that the then Governor of California Ronald Reagan was also in favor of the Act. I also wonder what made such a noted defender of the constitution and rights and human welfare, support such an action. I truly do wonder what made freedom man do such an act, maybe it has something in common with the NRA. But we'll never know. The Panthers were on the prowl gaining members and gaining fame, but such fame would also attract unwanted followers. ___ # Part 5: Early Lessons This start is probably the most important lesson for leftists. Start out small and start local. For all those worried about organizing and trying to make change its good to start small and with some friends. All it takes is just a group of friends to really start a change and to be known within the community. It is also good to have achievable goals. The Black Panthers didn't start out with a mass assault on the government. They identified problems within the community and planned to solve them while in the system. This is the greatest lesson from the Black Panthers to fellow leftists. If leftists are to grow as an organization they must pace themselves with problems they can solve at a grassroots level that will improve the community as it exists not as it will exist. ___

It should also be better understood in order to properly respect the memories of dead and currently imprisoned revolutionaries.\n___\n# Part 1: Turbulent Times\nQuickly ignoring that atrociously clichéd title, the times of the 60s and 70s were definitely a dangerous time. The stage was certainly set with a lot of violence, oppression, and turbulence and this would be the stage upon which a young Merritt college student from Oakland would walk on.\n___\n# Part 2: Enter Huey Newton\nHuey P. At college he joined the African American Association and then met Bobby Seale.\n___\n# Part 3: Genesis of the Vanguard\nBoth Bobby Seale and Huey Newton were part of the aforementioned African American Association but both felt that the organization was doing very little to help the people. This formation set out the basic principles of the organization: community self defense, community service, and community patrolling.\n___\n# Part 4: Notorious beginnings\nThe party began to patrol the police around all parts of Oakland while armed with guns. But nonetheless the party was growing.\n The party gained even more notoriety when in April of 1967 Denzil Dowell was shot dead by the police in North Richmond California. The family of Dowell called the Black Panthers when county officials refused to investigate. The Black Panthers held rallies and educated the people of their ideals and beliefs. It resonated with the community and the party gained even more supporters.\n However this next event would be the most notorious of notorious events in not only Black Panther history but in California history. The Panthers were on the prowl gaining members and gaining fame, but such fame would also attract unwanted followers.\n___\n# Part 5: Early Lessons\nThis start is probably the most important lesson for leftists. The Black Panthers didn't start out with a mass assault on the government. They identified problems within the community and planned to solve them while in the system. This is the greatest lesson from the Black Panthers to fellow leftists. If leftists are to grow as an organization they must pace themselves with problems they can solve at a grassroots level that will improve the community as it exists not as it will exist.\n___",

titleA Very Short History of The Black Panther Party: Part 1
body# America's most notorious finally party gets a terrible historical summarization ___ ![](https://cdn.steemitimages.com/DQmWMbYgM5oRhz1F6vdQfTHJq1fAbkj1MTEzDcoeoumxXgX/image.png) ###### (First six members of the Black Panthers. ___
