That’s lead to some interesting partnerships, which in turn helped boost Ripple and by extension its transactional protocol, XRP, to become one of the largest cryptocurrencies by market share in early 2018.\n\nIf you want to get some XRP for yourself, you need to know where to go and what to do. You need to know how to buy Ripple. As with our other guides on buying cryptocurrencies like Ethereum, we’ll walk you through the steps you need to take, as well as give you a couple of different options with the pros and cons of each.\n\nStill not quite sure what cryptocurrencies are all about? Here’s our guide to help explain them.\n\nAlthough there are definitely better places to store your cryptocurrency than on an exchange, they still represent the easiest and most automated method of buying and selling them. There are tens of options out there, and popular ones like BitStamp and Kraken remain the easiest to recommend. Ripple Lab’s site has a list of exchanges that support the cryptocurrency, though when making your decision, make sure you choose one that is well established and has insurance should theft or hacks occur.\n\nEach exchange will operate slightly differently, but most will involve several important steps. You’ll need to sign up for and verify an account, which in most cases will require some form of identification for fraud prevention, though it’s often a simple process.\n\nThe next step is to link your bank account or another form of payment method. That can be handled through the exchange dashboard. In the case of some exchanges — BitStamp and Kraken for example — you will then need to deposit some fiat current, like USD, into your account. Once it’s there, you’re ready to buy.\n\nWhat you’re then looking to do is make a new “buy order.” That may involve inputting a certain amount of XRP you want to buy, or a certain amount of USD (or equivalent) you’re willing to spend. Regardless, when you have settled on an amount you’re happy with, you hit the buy button and the money will be deducted from your deposit address and the equivalent XRP will be sent to your account.\n\nSome sites employ additional terminology for transactions which is worth knowing. A “market” buy order will purchase XRP at the best market price, while a “limit” buy order will only make a transaction at a fixed, or better price.\n\nWhichever choice you opt for, you should now be the proud owner of some Ripple cryptocurrency. Unless you plan to sell it again soon, we would recommend transferring it out to a more secure wallet just in case the exchange goes down, or becomes hard to use due to heavy traffic or DDOS attack.\n\nFor those who don’t like the risk of having any currency stored on an exchange for any period of time, or just want more control over the price, direct trades are a better bet. Although peer to peer trades with XRP are no way near as common or as supported as similar trades with bitcoin, there are still some routes you can go down.\n\nThe only established site for trading fiat currency for XRP in a direct manner is Cointal. It supports a variety of payment methods, including Paypal, bank transfers, visa debit and credit cards, and gift cards, among others. To use the service you simply head to its homepage, input the amount of XRP you want, or how much USD you’re willing to spend, and then search for an offer. Relevant trades will be presented to you in list form, and you can filter the results by buy/sell orders, payment method, and local currency.\n\nTo select which trade to go for, you can look at prices, payment options, and seller feedback, to make sure you’re trading with someone reputable. Direct trades do have a little more trust involved than exchange trades, but the upside is that you are far less reliant on the website itself functioning. You will then be taken into a private chat with the seller, whom you can discuss the specifics of your trade. Although it is evident that a lot of currencies gained a lot of value, there are plenty of altcoins which flew under the radar despite their gains. Moreover, a lot of the top 300 cryptocurrencies were created in the year 2017, which is both exciting and worrisome at the same time. Whether or not the year 2018 will yield similar returns has yet to be determined. For now, things are certainly looking up.\n\nA RECAP OF THE YEAR 2017 FOR ALTCOINS\nAlthough we already discussed which currencies noted major gains in 2017, it is evident this list is a lot longer than most people would expect. A lot of things changed in the world of cryptocurrency throughout 2017, and we can expect even more surprises in the year 2018. Recent statistics from Coincall provide a wealth of information well worth looking into, especially when it comes to the performance of cryptocurrency overall, and how new coins are all the rage.\n\nFirst of all, the top gainer in 2017 was none other than Verge. That’s a bit surprising, as most people only started talking about this currency in late 2017 and early 2018. Astonishingly, Verge grew over 1 million percent in value throughout 2017. It certainly makes Bitcoin’s gains pale in comparison, even though people are still on the fence as to whether or not Verge has any real purpose. Its Wraith implementation has been pretty interesting, although it subsequently made the price tank by 25%.\n\nOther currencies which noted massive gains that aren’t exactly mainstream include Hempcoin, Groestl, and a few others. There’s a lot of good money to be made with cryptocurrency, assuming you know which targets to shoot for. Focusing merely on the major cryptocurrencies is the safe approach, but it is evident some of the gambles made by early investors in specific tokens have also paid off. After all, investing US$1 in some of these currencies would have netted you a five-figure return today. It is uncanny how much (dumb) money can be made with these penny coins.\n\nWhat is rather disconcerting is how over half of the top 300 cryptocurrencies did not exist prior to 2017. Most of these currencies are ICO tokens, which were the most popular trend in all of cryptocurrency last year. There are also a fair amount of altcoins, pump-and-dump schemes, and Ponzis to contend with. Whether or not the world needs so many different currencies and tokens will always be subject to debate. After all, most of them don’t serve any real purpose, regardless of their recent price gains.\n\nAs is usually the case, cryptocurrencies outperformed regular stocks by quite a margin. Although 2017 was not a terrible year for stocks – there were multiple opportunities to double your money over the span of the year – cryptocurrencies netted returns of up to 1,740 times one’s initial investment. It almost feels like comparing apples and oranges in this regard, but it’s always worth the effort to see how both sectors compare to one another. This trend in cryptocurrency is not sustainable, though; that much everyone can see.\n\nAt the same time, there are still a lot of currencies with market caps below US$50 million. Although that may seem like a high number, it is relatively small when it comes to cryptocurrency. After all, most ICOs raise that amount of money in a matter of days, and thus it was only normal to have made it the threshold for these rankings. It will be quite interesting to see how all of this plays out in the future, as this money has to keep coming from somewhere.",

These improvements bring Ripple the same transaction throughput as Visa, the world’s largest payments network, and offer a solution to antiquated cross-border payments. Under the current payment system, with banks struggling to handle rising transaction levels, a transaction can take as long as three to five days.\n\nILP and RCL can now work together to create a network connecting all types of value on ledgers. The network meets the demands of the traditional financial world, traditional payments and digital assets.\n\nA representative for Ripple told CCN:\n\nThe feature updates consist of Escrow and Payment Channels. Escrow allows Ripple Consensus Ledger (RCL) to communicate with the Interledger Protocol (ILP) to lock up payments until a determined time. The channel permits a transaction throughput that increases to tens of thousands per second. This time it came from Nassim Nicholas Taleb, an American-Lebanese academic and hedge fund manager, who believes that bitcoin can touch $1,00,000 and there is no way to properly short the bitcoin ‘bubble’. One of the top modern philosophers, Taleb is known for predicting black swan events. He predicted the 2008 crisis, 2016 US presidential election and the outcome of Brexit vote. In his tweet Taleb said, “No, there is NO way to properly short the bitcoin “bubble”. Any strategy that doesn\"t entail options is nonergodic (subjected to blowup). Just as one couldn’t rule out 5K, then 10K, one can\"t rule out 100K.” He tweeted just before the future trading in bitcoin went live last night. Taleb has around 2.28 lakh followers on Twitter. In another tweet, he said, “Note that Bitcoin has a limited number of natural sellers. The entire concept is very concave supply (it costs more and more to extract). The number of producers shrinks with time.” Bitcoin recently surpassed the $19,000 level last week. The e-currency was trading at 22 per cent up at $16,796.16 at around 11.25 am (IST), according to the data available with coingecko.com. The sudden spike in bitcoin prices were witnessed on Monday after first-ever bitcoin future began trading on Sunday, as the increasingly popular virtual currency made its debut on a major US exchange. Cyber security pioneer John McAfee in a tweet earlier said, “Those of you in the old school who believe this is a bubble simply have not understood the new mathematics of the blockchain, or you did not cared enough to try. Bubbles are mathematically impossible in this new paradigm. So are corrections and all else.” Back home, the government is planning to set up a panel to decide on bitcoin policy, ETNow reported on Monday quoting agencies. Meanwhile, the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) had also warned the public of the risks of virtual currencies (VCs). The apex bank last week reiterated its stand that “it has not given any licence or authorisation to any entity or company to operate such schemes or deal with Bitcoin or any VC.” \"In the wake of a significant spurt in the valuation of many VCs and rapid growth in Initial Coin Offerings (ICOs), RBI reiterates the concerns,\" the central bank said in a statement.",
