body![dims.apnews.webp](https://cdn.steemitimages.com/DQmWYVr8ay5WXC1nxZqshARt7gfBcNAJacEcXcmo6NRvSXC/dims.apnews.webp) The average taxpayer is getting a $2,852 refund, $75 more than last year, based on the most recent IRS data. So what should you do with that money? Experts generally advise putting it toward debt and savings, but, for many people, that’s unrealistic. A tax refund is typically the “biggest extra windfall of the year,” said Courtney Alev, consumer financial advocate at Credit Karma. “One thing we do see is a propensity to consider a tax refund something to splurge with. One in four taxpayers see it as free money and plan to spend it on something they would not otherwise,” she said. “While this behavior is completely understandable, given how hard up people are — with the rising cost of living, and high interest rates, the best thing you can do is use it as an opportunity to advance your financial goals.” Emily Garcia, 30, who works in marketing for a medical imaging software company in Toledo, Ohio, said she and her husband, with whom she filed jointly, were refunded about $1,000 and spent the money on patio furniture. “We wanted to dress up the backyard, to make it seem nice, and furniture’s not cheap,” she said. “It was a nice thing to have the refund check to be able to buy what we were looking at.” Though Garcia and her husband bought a house two years ago, which they’re still in the process of paying off, they decided not to put the refund toward their mortgage. ”The debt’s not going anywhere,” said Garcia. “A thousand dollars is not going to make a dent. But it’s a good amount to buy something like furniture.” Megan McClelland, 38, who works as a head high school counselor in Petaluma, California, is spending her refund — just over $1,000 — on travel, such as trips for a bachelorette and a wedding. In October, McClelland had the last of her outstanding student loans cancelled through the Public Service Loan Forgiveness program, and so is debt free for the first time in years. She said that the $500 she had budgeted for her monthly student loan payments is now going into her savings account, so she sees the refund as a chance to spend on “things that I probably otherwise wouldn’t be able to pay for — or that would bring me into debt.” In the past, McClelland said, she would typically have had to work extra shifts, moonlighting at a winery or as a caterer, to take a trip — or put the travel on the credit card. Now she can use the tax refund instead. “The way the tax refund works in my mind is I can use it more for ‘fun money,’” she said. As of late last month, the IRS had processed about 141 million returns and refunded roughly $261 billion to taxpayers, 2.2% more than at that time in 2023. Matt Schulz, chief credit analyst at LendingTree, echoed the idea that paying down debt and contributing to savings are the two most financially sound things to do with a tax refund, though he said people should do both simultaneously, rather than choosing between the two. “If you pay down debt to zero and you don’t have any savings, all that happens is the next time you have an emergency expense — like a flat tire or taking your dog to the vet — that expense just goes back on your credit card and you’re right back in debt,” he said. “If you can build a little bit of savings while you’re paying off loans you can break that cycle of debt so many people find themselves in.” Said Alev: “Life is short, we want to reward ourselves. And we see a diverse set of responses (with tax refunds). Our best tip is to use that refund to get your financial life on track. At the treetop, that’s what we’re seeing and advising.”

A slew of developers think they have the answer: adding programmability to the Bitcoin blockchain. Today, Bitcoin is viewed by many as digital gold — a token you hold for appreciation, but can’t do much else with. While you can use its biggest rival, Ether, to swap coins and earn yield on the Ethereum network, the Bitcoin blockchain lacks the ability to easily support apps via so-called smart-contract functionality that allows for features such as self-executing agreements stored on the blockchain. For years, developers have tried to rectify that intentional design flaw in various ways. They built Bitcoin “Layer 2” networks, such as Lightning, designed to scale Bitcoin for applications like payments. Some have proven to be unreliable, and so-called bridges — software infrastructure to move tokens between networks — have been prone to hacks, making many users hesitant to use them. And many Bitcoiners haven’t been interested in using the tokens for payment, anyway, and are holding them on the long-term bet prices will rise in what’s become known as “hodling.” However, without a fresh catalyst to maintain investor enthusiasm about Bitcoin, the original cryptocurrency has retreated from its all-time high of almost $74,000 set in March. Things have changed recently, though, once Bitcoin Ordinals — a way to create nonfungible tokens by embedding data onto satoshis, as the smallest denomination of Bitcoin is called — began last year. Soon after, an anonymous developer named Domo proposed BRC-20 tokens, which use the same inscriptions mechanism to issue tokens on the Bitcoin blockchain. That, in turn, has sent teams of developers scouring for ways to enable even greater Bitcoin programmability. The Bitcoin community is considering proposals like OP_CAT, which would be a software upgrade to the network itself and make programmability easier to implement. Approaches being worked on include one from a team that Domo is involved with, the Layer 1 Foundation. Another approach, from startup Arch, just raised $7 million in a round led by Multicoin Capital. “It’s a huge unlock for Bitcoin,” said Kyle Samani, co-founder of Multicoin. “It’s really good for users.” Expected to open to all developers as soon as this month, Arch runs an application platform on top of Bitcoin that uses software that will potentially allow apps from the Solana network to be ported onto Bitcoin, Arch Chief Executive Officer Matt Mudano said. Already, about 20 developer teams are building apps for functions such as borrowing and lending against Ordinals, as well as decentralized exchanges and stablecoins, he said. Layer 1 Foundation, meanwhile, is building out a programmable module for the so-called BRC-20 metaprotocol, which is essentially just messages stored in code layered on the Bitcoin blockchain. An indexer can find these messages and run computations in a similar way to smart contracts on Ethereum. Because Bitcoin has much longer block confirmation times than Ethereum - 10 minutes versus 12 seconds currently — that leaves more time to perform computations, “we can actually do more,” said Eril Ezerel, founder of Best in Slot, Ordinals aggregator and explorer. “It’s like chapter two in crypto, Ezerel said. “It’s big. It makes us question how we build things.” While building with metaprotocols is simpler, it’s enough to support most financial applications, he said. Not everyone in the Bitcoin programing community is convinced this is the cryptocurrency’s future. Jeff Garzik, a one-time Bitcoin core developer and co-founder at crypto infrastructure and app builder Bloq, expects Layer 2s will ultimately win out, as using them for transactions will be less expensive than running apps on Bitcoin. “Bitcoin programmability is increasing — by virtue of these new Bitcoin L2s expanding Bitcoin’s reach,” said Garzik, who is working on a fusion of Bitcoin and Ethereum Layer 2. “This simultaneously boosts the Ethereum ecosystem, and also competes freshly with the Ethereum ecosystem.” Even so, the new ventures are betting that this new type of programmability could lead to an influx of decentralized finance apps on Bitcoin. Currently, the total value of tokens locked in the Bitcoin DeFi market is about $1.1 billion, compared with $52.7 billion for Ethereum, according to data tracker DeFi Llama. “Bitcoin’s DeFi ecosystem could grow to the largest in all of crypto,” said Toby Lewis, a founder of OrdinalsBot. “It is possible that the Bitcoin DeFi ecosystem could grow to trillions of dollars of market cap over the next few years, and it appears to be one of the major drivers of growth in crypto this cycle.” And if demand materializes, possibly the next catalyst that Bitcoin investors appear to be waiting on.

Today, Bitcoin is viewed by many as digital gold — a token you hold for appreciation, but can’t do much else with. While you can use its biggest rival, Ether, to swap coins and earn yield on the Ethereum network, the Bitcoin blockchain lacks the ability to easily support apps via so-called smart-contract functionality that allows for features such as self-executing agreements stored on the blockchain.\n\nFor years, developers have tried to rectify that intentional design flaw in various ways. They built Bitcoin “Layer 2” networks, such as Lightning, designed to scale Bitcoin for applications like payments. Some have proven to be unreliable, and so-called bridges — software infrastructure to move tokens between networks — have been prone to hacks, making many users hesitant to use them. A sequel to “Happy Gilmore” is in the works, Netflix announced in a post on X Wednesday, with Adam Sandler reprising his role as the comedy classic’s neurotic titular star. Sandler co-wrote the 1996 film, which sees a failed ice hockey player make the turbulent – often violent – transition to golf phenom in order to save his grandmother’s house from foreclosure. Standing in Gilmore’s way is arch-nemesis Shooter McGavin, played by Christopher McDonald, who in March teased that Sandler was working on a sequel script. “It’s in the works. Fans demand it, dammit!” McDonald said during an interview on an episode of “Audacy’s 92.3 The Fan” radio show, adding that he was “very, very pleased” when he read a first draft Sandler showed him. Julie Bowen, Frances Bay, and Kevin Nealon starred alongside the duo in the original, as well as Carl Weathers, who died aged 76 in February. Weathers played Derick “Chubbs” Peterson, a retired pro who becomes Gilmore’s mentor, and was described by Sandler as “a true great man” in an Instagram post paying tribute to the football player turned actor. “Great dad. Great actor. Great athlete,” Sandler, 57, wrote. “So much fun to be around … Carl will always be known as a true legend.” Among Sandler’s most iconic roles, the slapstick comedy has proven to be a favorite of golf fans and professionals alike, inspiring countless recreations of Gilmore’s unorthodox technique – and even a real-life golfing namesake. “The funny thing is that there are so many non-golfers who would know what the ‘Happy Gilmore swing’ is or they’ve watched the film,” “I think that’s great that it’s got so many people from outside of golf interested. They’ve watched the movie and then they’ll go to the driving range and just try to replicate that iconic golf swing.”

London’s National Gallery has Van Gogh’s “Sunflowers”; “The Starry Night” meanwhile, is held at The Museum of Modern Art in New York, in good company alongside Salvador Dalì’s melting clocks, Andy Warhol’s soup cans and Frida Kahlo’s self-portrait. The Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum in Boston, however, is now more famous for the artwork that is not there, or at least, that is no longer there. On March 18 1990 the museum fell prey to history’s biggest art heist. Thirteen works of art estimated to be worth over half a billion dollars — including three Rembrandts and a Vermeer — were stolen in the middle of the night, while the two security guards sat in the basement bound in duct tape. A new episode of CNN’s “How It Really Happened” airing Sunday 19 May at 9P ET/ PT features an interview with one of those guards: Rick Abath, who gave his only TV interview to CNN in 2013, and who died in February 2024 aged 57. The robbery is a treasure trove of surprising facts and unexpected plot twists. Here are five things that make the Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum, and its famous theft, so interesting. The woman behind the building Isabella Stewart Gardner, the museum’s founder and namesake, is a fascinating character. The daughter and eventual widow of two successful businessmen, Gardner was a philanthropist and art collector who built the museum to house her stash. ![arc-008034-0001.webp](https://cdn.steemitimages.com/DQmbhGYqnf38Uyq4bfdxq5sNLAB1FeJCLtJSGgtNDkSZ4vN/arc-008034-0001.webp) “When she opened the museum in 1903 she mandated that it be free of charge, to gain the appreciation and the attendance of all of Boston,” Stephan Kurkjian, author of “Master Thieves: The Boston Gangsters Who Pulled Off the World’s Greatest Art Heist”, told CNN in the programme. “Her museum, at that point in time, was the largest collection of art by a private individual in America.” Gardner also had links to the fledgling campaign for women’s political rights. The museum displays the photographs and letters of her friend Julia Ward Howe, an organizer of two US suffrage societies, and a print of Ethel Smyth, a composer and close friend of the English Suffragette leader Emmeline Pankhurst. Gardner met Smyth through their mutual friend, the painter John Singer Sargent, whose portrait of Gardener raised eyebrows for the low-cut neckline he gave her. Gardner seemed to enjoy flirting with scandal and gossip: she once arrived at a Boston Symphony Orchestra performance in a hat band emblazoned with the name of her favorite baseball team, Red Sox, and an illustration in a January 1897 edition of the Boston Globe showed her apparently taking one of Boston Zoo’s lions for a walk. Somewhat ironically, when the Mona Lisa was stolen in 1911, Gardner told her museum guards that, if they saw anyone trying to rob them, they should shoot to kill. The art not taken The thieves’ loot is estimated to be worth over half a billion dollars. However, they left the building’s most expensive artifact: “The Rape of Europa” by Titian, which Gardner bought from a London art gallery in 1896, then a record price for an old master painting. ![128458.webp](https://cdn.steemitimages.com/DQmYjv5Wr21BWeJbTbt1pbqWXpNWd9eeSWNwcyLxgu4SkXc/128458.webp) Why commit history’s greatest art heist and leave without the priciest piece in the museum? Well, size may have played a role. The largest artwork taken was Rembrandt’s “Christ in the Storm on the Sea of Galilee,” famous for being Rembrandt’s only seascape and measures roughly 5x4 feet. “The Rape of Europa,” meanwhile, is larger, at nearly 6x7 feet. The Napoleon factor Around 2005, the investigation into the stolen artworks took a detour to the French island of Corsica in the Meditteranean Sea. Two Frenchmen with alleged ties to the Corsican mob were trying to sell two paintings: a Rembrandt and a Vermeer. Former FBI Special Agent Bob Wittman was involved in a sting to try and buy them — but the operation eventually fell apart when the men were arrested for selling art taken from the Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art in Nice instead. ![gettyimages-1372712406.webp](https://cdn.steemitimages.com/DQmSa7wjJYcCqgKPp65e3jEy3jYwVykPfMXw6XQy1QKRfZM/gettyimages-1372712406.webp) A rock’n’roll suspect March 18 1990 was not the first time a Rembrandt had been stolen from a Boston museum. In 1975, career criminal and art thief Myles Connor walked into Boston’s Museum of Fine Arts, and walked out with a Rembrandt tucked into his oversized coat pocket. He was the FBI’s first suspect in the Gardner case, however the walls of federal prison — where he was incarcerated on drugs charges — gave him a pretty solid alibi. ![gettyimages-141320102.webp](https://cdn.steemitimages.com/DQmcUZMjmreX3btUZsWGyBYtSRvmDQ6dCXoCQt8TYucE7Ki/gettyimages-141320102.webp) When he wasn’t lifting famous artworks from their displays, Connor was a musician. It was through gigging that he met Al Dotoli, who worked with stars including Frank Sinatra and Liza Minelli. In 1976 Connor was jailed for a separate art theft committed in Maine. Hoping to use his stolen Rembrandt to leverage a lesser sentence, he needed Dotoli — who was on tour with Dionne Warwick — to turn the painting in to the authorities on his behalf. An invisible thief? One of the stolen artworks, Édouard Manet’s “Chez Tortoni,” was taken from the museum’s Blue Room on the first floor. The painting stands out for two reasons, the first being its frame. The thieves left almost all of the frames behind, cutting some out of the front. “To even leave remnants of the painting(s) behind was savage,” Horan said. “In my mind, it’s sort of like slashing someone’s throat.” ![gettyimages-899505808.webp](https://cdn.steemitimages.com/DQmZKCS42YnbrpT3oQmVXJjxBziQL4KQs91rNVmt2sosJq1/gettyimages-899505808.webp) The “Chez Tortoni” frame was unusual for where it was left, though: not in the room it was stolen from, but in the chair of the security office downstairs. Even more remarkable, not a single motion detector was set off in the Blue Room. Bar investigating the possibility of ghost robbers, investigators wondered if this pointed to the plot being an inside job. “At the FBI we found that about 89% of museum institutional heists are inside jobs,” Wittman said. “That’s how these things get stolen.”

London’s National Gallery has Van Gogh’s “Sunflowers”; “The Starry Night” meanwhile, is held at The Museum of Modern Art in New York, in good company alongside Salvador Dalì’s melting clocks, Andy Warhol’s soup cans and Frida Kahlo’s self-portrait.\n\nThe Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum in Boston, however, is now more famous for the artwork that is not there, or at least, that is no longer there.\n\nOn March 18 1990 the museum fell prey to history’s biggest art heist. Thirteen works of art estimated to be worth over half a billion dollars — including three Rembrandts and a Vermeer — were stolen in the middle of the night, while the two security guards sat in the basement bound in duct tape.\n\nA new episode of CNN’s “How It Really Happened” airing Sunday 19 May at 9P ET/ PT features an interview with one of those guards: Rick Abath, who gave his only TV interview to CNN in 2013, and who died in February 2024 aged 57.\n\nThe robbery is a treasure trove of surprising facts and unexpected plot twists. Here are five things that make the Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum, and its famous theft, so interesting.\n\nThe woman behind the building\nIsabella Stewart Gardner, the museum’s founder and namesake, is a fascinating character. The daughter and eventual widow of two successful businessmen, Gardner was a philanthropist and art collector who built the museum to house her stash.\n\n\n\n![arc-008034-0001.webp](https://cdn.steemitimages.com/DQmbhGYqnf38Uyq4bfdxq5sNLAB1FeJCLtJSGgtNDkSZ4vN/arc-008034-0001.webp)\n\n\n“When she opened the museum in 1903 she mandated that it be free of charge, to gain the appreciation and the attendance of all of Boston,” Stephan Kurkjian, author of “Master Thieves: The Boston Gangsters Who Pulled Off the World’s Greatest Art Heist”, told CNN in the programme. “Her museum, at that point in time, was the largest collection of art by a private individual in America.”\n\nGardner also had links to the fledgling campaign for women’s political rights. The museum displays the photographs and letters of her friend Julia Ward Howe, an organizer of two US suffrage societies, and a print of Ethel Smyth, a composer and close friend of the English Suffragette leader Emmeline Pankhurst.\n\nGardner met Smyth through their mutual friend, the painter John Singer Sargent, whose portrait of Gardener raised eyebrows for the low-cut neckline he gave her.\n\nGardner seemed to enjoy flirting with scandal and gossip: she once arrived at a Boston Symphony Orchestra performance in a hat band emblazoned with the name of her favorite baseball team, Red Sox, and an illustration in a January 1897 edition of the Boston Globe showed her apparently taking one of Boston Zoo’s lions for a walk.\n\nSomewhat ironically, when the Mona Lisa was stolen in 1911, Gardner told her museum guards that, if they saw anyone trying to rob them, they should shoot to kill.\n\nThe art not taken\nThe thieves’ loot is estimated to be worth over half a billion dollars. However, they left the building’s most expensive artifact: “The Rape of Europa” by Titian, which Gardner bought from a London art gallery in 1896, then a record price for an old master painting.\n\n\n![128458.webp](https://cdn.steemitimages.com/DQmYjv5Wr21BWeJbTbt1pbqWXpNWd9eeSWNwcyLxgu4SkXc/128458.webp)\n\n\nWhy commit history’s greatest art heist and leave without the priciest piece in the museum? Well, size may have played a role. The largest artwork taken was Rembrandt’s “Christ in the Storm on the Sea of Galilee,” famous for being Rembrandt’s only seascape and measures roughly 5x4 feet. “The Rape of Europa,” meanwhile, is larger, at nearly 6x7 feet.\n\nThe Napoleon factor\nAround 2005, the investigation into the stolen artworks took a detour to the French island of Corsica in the Meditteranean Sea. Two Frenchmen with alleged ties to the Corsican mob were trying to sell two paintings: a Rembrandt and a Vermeer. Former FBI Special Agent Bob Wittman was involved in a sting to try and buy them — but the operation eventually fell apart when the men were arrested for selling art taken from the Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art in Nice instead.\n\n![gettyimages-1372712406.webp](https://cdn.steemitimages.com/DQmSa7wjJYcCqgKPp65e3jEy3jYwVykPfMXw6XQy1QKRfZM/gettyimages-1372712406.webp)\n\nA rock’n’roll suspect\nMarch 18 1990 was not the first time a Rembrandt had been stolen from a Boston museum. Following the success of its second season, which saw the electrifying “will they, won’t they” love story of Viscount Anthony Bridgerton (Jonathan Bailey) and Kate Sharma (Simone Ashley) – dubbed “Kanthony” by frenzied fans – the spotlight has shifted to two familiar characters poised for their turn in the spotlight: Colin Bridgerton (Luke Newton) and Penelope Featherington (Nicola Coughlan). The two beloved characters are finally taking center stage as the latest installment of the Regency-era romantic drama, and “Polin” shippers have eagerly awaited this moment, having watched Penelope secretly pine for Colin since the series launched in 2020. But with a deviation from the order of events in Julia Quinn’s “Bridgerton” novels, they will finally be getting the resolution they (and we) have been longing for. When we last saw the duo in Season 2, Colin had inadvertently hurt Penelope, when she overheard him telling his gentry friends that he would never court her, creating a rift and setting up the emotional tension for this season. “When you meet them, they’re both putting on masks,” Coughlan told CNN in a recent interview. “They each feel like they need to be other people to survive and to be loved, and to find a match.” The journey from friends to something more The new season begins with Colin returning from a summer of traveling abroad, with a new look and newfound attention from the ladies. Meanwhile, Penelope is determined to find a husband in a desperate attempt to escape her family home, dominated by her scheming mother and newly-married sisters. With this season promising that “even a wallflower can blossom,” Penelope’s resolve comes with a “glow up” of sorts, which rids her of citrus-colored gowns and awkward hair updos in favor of a more mature, sophisticated look. “For her, she’s thinking, ‘I don’t care about romance or love, that doesn’t interest me. I’m going to be practical and find a husband.’ But you realize that she’s done no work on herself. So, the transformation doesn’t fix anything,” Coughlan said. In an unexpected twist, Colin takes on the role of mentor, helping Penelope navigate the world of courtship. And it works, with Penelope soon attracting the attention of Lord Debling (Sam Phillips), a character who doesn’t appear in the books. Almost inevitably, this sparks jealousy in Colin. In the latest trailer, we see him pensively ask his mother, “Is the best foundation for love friendship?” While fans of the series will be screaming “YES” at their TV screens, Coughlan emphasizes the characters must go on a crucial journey of self-love before coming together. them learning to love themselves, as cheesy as that sounds,” Coughlan said cringingly. “But it’s so important. Once they learn to live in who they are, that’s when they really, truly blossom.” Newton chimed in, “They’ve known each other for a really long time, they know each other’s insecurities, and it’s about accepting that person rather than idolizing a version of them that just isn’t real.” As this season’s main love interest, Newton admitted to feeling slight pressure, but said he’s embracing the legacy left by his predecessors (Bailey along with Season 1’s Regé-Jean Page as Simon Basset) while bringing a fresh take on the archetype. “Having sat in this role for the last four years, I felt in a really good place with Colin. He has a lot of traits that the previous male leads didn’t quite have. He’s got this sensitivity and empathy for other characters,” he said. Unlocking their sexual chemistry After working together for the past four years, Coughlan and Newton said that becoming series leads felt exciting and natural. Their strong bond and open communication allowed them to “unlock” their chemistry rather than having to work on it, proving invaluable when filming “Bridgerton’s” famous love scenes. “In the lead up, I was very nervous,” Coughlan admitted. “But then once we got into it, we had so much control over what we were doing. They ended up being really fun and watching them back, I think they’re really beautiful.” What the pair aren’t comfortable with is dishing out dating advice. Both insisted they aren’t qualified to give modern-day advice (asking for a friend), but they believe that ultimately, Colin, Penelope and the rest of us are “just human.” “You can have a crush, but don’t think that they’re the be-all and end-all,” Coughlan instructed. Note taken. “Bridgerton” begins its third season with Part 1 on May 16 and Part 2 on June 13 on Netflix.
